Interesting. How many of us noticed that, in ST:II - The Wrath of Khan, James Horner's incidental music used when Khan was in the process of "marooning" Kirk & Co. on the dead moon on which Carol Marcus had tested the device, and leading up to Kirk yelling "KHAN!!!" into the commuicator, was almost identical (an homage to?) the same downward "bending" of eerie tones such as when the Talosians were introduced, or something really spooky or weird was being introduced in an episode of TOS? Go back to that scene in TWOK and listen, then go back to any number of episodes of TOS and listen for that same basic REALLY EERIE THEME music. As you'd watch the television, that kind of music almost mades one want to raise their feet off the floor from in front of the couch....

Giacchino's idea to possibly incorporate similar themes from TOS into the next Trek movie sounds okay to me: he's already stated he would do that if (--IF--) it fit and made sense in a particular scene. He didn't "promise" he'll do that; he only aluded to the awesome potential that using pre-existing, recognizable themes might stir emotions in viewers of such a scene, including himself. I'm okay with that.

Just wanted to say how disappointed I was with Giacchino's eventual score for the Trek reboot.

He's done some great stuff, and this while it turned out a serviceable enough score, it was far from memorable compared to how I'd hope it would end up.

The music that WAS memorable as far as this reboot was concerned, turned out to be the awesome 'Freedom Fighters' track by 'Two Steps From Hell' that was used in the 3rd trailer! Imagine if THAT had been incorporated as the theme to this movie instead, and referenced throughout....

Anyway, I know Giacchino is capable of much, much more....but sure hope he ends up integrating some of the dramatic TOS cues to bring a bit of nostalgic fun to the sequel's soundtrack this time around.

I think Giacchino is a fine composer. Star Trek (2009) was OK but not his best work. Some of his video game scores were far more powerful. It was JJ's movie and he reined Michael in for what ever reasons and its cost the film some of its emotional underpinning's. The score for UP was just remarkable. He can do better and hopefully the next Star Trek Film will let him pull out all the stops.

When it comes to the movies, one thing all 11 excelled at was music. Even Star Trek V's biggest haters usually acknowledge that the music score was one of the high points of the movie. Jerry Goldsmith will always be my favorite. He always seemed to capture the most positive elements of Star Trek in his music. He always did great music for his movies. Planet of the Apes, Poltergeist, Logan's Run, Alien. He pretty much could take any challenge that came his way, from drama, horror, sci-fi, action.

Revised from post 62:
He did say he focused on the character approach, and what supports the story is the thing that was most important to him and JJ in writing score.

See how tired I am, I revised and messed up the wrong previous post.

That as a film composer you must love film, and your job is to support and tell the story.

Revised:
He basically said the same as above, that J.J. and him thought that the score should just focus on the two characters, the formation of these two guys becoming friends, their relationship.
