I suppose the only way Paul will hear is when Cornelius and Zira take back a copy of the script with them to 1973.

He had to appeal to the mainstream which meant having to make sacrifices.

Do I like the film? Yes I do

Do I agree with all the changes JJ Abrams made? Hell no

I understand why it had to change, I'm not niave. But the changes he made would be the changes that I would not have changed.

#56 No one has to like the changes J.J and co. made, but people should try to understand why they were made. No one has to like the movie, but everyone must accept the fact that for Star Trek to survive a shake-up of the status quo is needed every now and then. Its naive to think that even a fictional thing like Star Trek should remain the same forever. Change is neccessary, even if it isn't always desired. A fresh take was needed to ensure not just the survival of the franchise, but for it to thrive as well as it can.

#49: "Yea I hated Romulus being destroyed."

In fairness, though, it had become the sad planet of the shoulderpad aliens, so probably best to put them out of their misery :(

#50: "Regurgitate the same cake? Uhuh. That’s all we did."

Such modesty. Not _all,_ no :)

You make some fair points but does that mean that all fans must like all the changes?

I like the film but I do hate some of the changes

I saw this movie 3 times in the theater, bought the DVD and am the proud owner of the new Enterprise toy. Though I have some issues, I'm on board! I'm definitely planning multiple theater viewings of the sequel in 2012. IMAX, please!

I think some people are hesitant to embrace new ideas because they had gotten used to the status quo. "Star Trek" '09 is different from what came before in that it shook things up, some dramatic, like the new timeline, destruction of Prime Romulus and alternate Vulcan. New canon has been created. But some people like to cling to old canon like its the bible. The beauty of what Bob and Alex did was going back to a classic device (time travel) and using that to both save "old" canon and create a fresh timeline. Sure, Prime Romulus was destroyed, but a sacrifice had to be made in order to rejuvenate an ailing franchise. Change may be scary, but it is also neccessary.

I think that most people who complain about this movie forget that it is about the characters. Bob, Alex and J.J truly understand the characters better than most people give them credit for. And some people complain about the story. Unfortunately, there is only so much these talented writers can put into two hours. The establishment of the new timeline and how the classic characters meet in it take up a large portion of the pie. While the story has problems in some places, overall it works pretty well.
But that is what sequels are for. To improve on the strengths and fix the weaknesses of the first film. To that, I say to Bob I plan on seeing the sequel at least ten times at the theatre.
