GENRE TV NEWS

LOST producers talk "Candidates" and the "Sideways" world

"LOST"
executive producer Carlton Cuse told TV Guide that "the concept of the candidates is really central to the final season of the show.":

"Jacob is dead so that leaves a significant problem for the people on the island. Who is destined to be the person who is protecting this place?"

"One of the big questions of this show is: Why were these people brought to this island?" Lindelof adds. "At least now we have some sense — if Jacob is responsible for bringing them there — that it has something to do with the fact that he’s been observing them for quite some time. We now have information that he had this lighthouse, that he was able to see these people, look into their lives. For some reason, he chose them. We’ll find out what that reason is in the coming weeks."

The same goes for the "Sideways" world.  Fans shouldn’t cast aside what we’re seeing — and will continue to see — from the Sideways characters:

"People are saying [they] don’t need these stories and all we can say is they’re absolutely 100 percent necessary to tell the story of Lost, and hopefully by the end of the season it will be more obvious as to why," producer Adam Horowitz said.

On the casting side, three more characters have been confirmed as coming back to the show.  Ian Somerhalder, who played Boone, revealed that he plans to shoot one more appearance as Sideways Boone before the end of the show.  Somerhalder wouldn’t reveal which episode he’ll appear in though, only saying that it’s "in the works." Also returning to the show will be Sonya Walger (Penny).  The "FlashForward" actress revealed that she has shot an episode and will be back for at least one more.  And rounding out the casting news, Michael Ausiello of EW has confirmed the rumor that Rousseau is returning. Here are a few "bites" to round out this week’s "LOST" news along with the latest images and videos.

FlashForward: First details on James Callis’ character
Jessika Borsicsky, "FlashForward" executive producer and one of the show’s new showrunners, was interviewed on the show’s set and offered some details about the season’s remaining episodes, including answers to some outstanding questions:

…Borsiczky promised answers to many questions, starting with whether FBI Agent Demetri Noh (John Cho) will die as predicted. "The first date we have to deal with when we get back, though, is the March 15th date, when Demetri’s found out he’s going to be murdered," she said.

Borsicsky also says that by the end of the season we’ll discover whether everyone’s future has happened and who is behind the blackout (including the identity of Suspect Zero):

Does the future come true? "The really exciting thing is that by the end of the season we will find out whether everyone’s future has happened. Have they been able to avert it, did they try and avert it and by the act of averting it make it happen?" Borsiczky said.

Who’s behind it? "It’s going to be all laid out. And I have to say, we’re in the middle of working on that episode, and it’s so much fun just to get to finally tie up those things from the pilot…

"We’re going to find out who the man or woman [who was] awake in the stands was on the day of the blackout."

But the question to "what" caused the blackout will be ongoing:

"There are some bigger questions to the show that will be ongoing. But we’re going to get a lot more information about the cause of the blackout," she added.

The first 20 minutes of the show’s two-hour return episode "Revelation Zero" was screened at PaleyFest 2010 this past Thursday.  You can find a summary of the screening at SCI FI Wire. Meanwhile, TV Overmind interviewed cast member Sonya Walger got the first details about James Callis’ character (who is called Gabriel McDow):

“Olivia meets this strange character who seems to know an enormous amount about her future, and is very definitive about what he knows…and the reason he knows so much about Olivia’s future is that it turns out he has had multiple flash-forwards. So he becomes integral to her believing and subscribing to the idea that there is an alternative, that there was another path that she might have gone on. He also becomes of huge importance to the FBI investigation.” Walger said.

In casting news, "Family Guy" / "American Dad" / "The Cleveland Show" creator Seth MacFarlane will reprise his role as an FBI agent before the end of the season.  His role in the pilot was just a cameo with a few lines, and MacFarlane doesn’t expect anything grander in his next appearance.  Rapper/Producer Timbaland will also make a brief cameo in an upcoming episode.  "FlashForward" returns this Thursday, March 18th with the two-part episode "Revelation Zero" from 8:00-10:00, but don’t forget about the special recap episode "What Did You See?" that will air on Tuesday, March 16th at 8:00.  ABC has also issued a press release for episode 13 called "Blowback" which airs on March 25th (click here to read the release).

New showrunner Scott Rosenbaum talks V + two episode titles revealed
When "V" returns March 30th, eight episodes will remain for the season.  New showrunner Scott Rosenbaum was interviewed by the LA Times and offered some details about what to expect for the rest of the season, starting with the very first episode back:

Every single episode of the show now, starting with Episode 4, there will be three or four huge, oh-my-God, wow … I-didn’t-see-that-coming [moments].

You’ll learn more about the Vs anatomically in my first episode back than you did in the first four episodes and get an understanding of how they work, why they’re different. Everything is like that. The plan, why they’re here. We’re really going to dive into that kind of stuff. … That first episode coming back, just in Acts 5 and 6, there’s four huge reveals, just in two acts of that show alone.

And Rosenbaum says the revelations will continue through the end of the season, including Val’s pregnancy (and others):

One of the things that’s going to be really fun is Val’s pregnancy. … Without saying what exactly is inside her, there’s an accelerated gestation period. … We’re going to see signs and hints of what this baby really is, and then, ultimately, the baby will be born. I think the pregnancy story is a really fun story and weird and twisted but also very grounded and emotional. … And there will be multiple pregnancies. … Val will not be the only one who’s pregnant.

A nod to the original series in the form of a rodent:

You’re going to see Anna’s true colors, her true faith so to speak, sort of as a nod to the original series. You’ll see rodent desire. We definitely do a nod to that, and then I think we top it. We trump it by one, all in the same episode.

And we’ll get introduced to a V soldier–those we’ve seen thus far are essentially worker Vs:

You’ll find out a lot of interesting things about the Vs. We’re going to introduce what a V soldier is. … All the Vs that you’ve seen are essentially worker Vs. So, we’re going to introduce what a V soldier is and the threat of them. We will meet John May [Michael Trucco]. I’m hoping that you will be shocked and surprised about the relationship between John May and Ryan and the Fifth Column. We came up with a pretty interesting spin on that.

In other news, ABC has finally revealed the title for episode five (Welcome to the War"–read the description here) and we’ve also learned that the sixth episode of the season will be called "Pound of Flesh" (airing April 6th).  That episode will be screened during the first day of WonderCon 2010 (see related story further down).

Being Human creators developing new superhero series called Orhpans
"Being Human"
creator Toby Whithouse and producer Matthew Bouch are teaming for a six-part superhero drama for BBC1 called "Orphans". [via SFX.co.uk]

The hour-long episodes will follow a “disparate” group of superheroes who live in a world that appears like our own but is gradually revealed to be quite different. The aim, apparently, is to create a show that does for superheroes, what Being Human did for werewolves and vampires.

Matthew Bouch told Broadcast magazine: “In the process of doing Being Human we discovered our sensibilities were very similar. They are very unorthodox in a way, certainly in the combinations of genres that we use. We needed to set up on our own so that we could enjoy that freedom and the spoils of our labour.”

WonderCon 2010 screenings: V; Fringe; Human Target; Happy Town and Doctor Who
"WonderCon 2010"
will feature screenings for "V", "Fringe", "Human Target", "Happy Town" and "Doctor Who".

SCI-FI RATINGS (Based on final national numbers unless otherwise noted) [@TravisYanan]

"Know Thy Enemy", the sixth episode of Syfy’s "Caprica", drew 1.15 million viewers and a 0.5 A18-49 rating last week.  Make no mistake these are still very low numbers, but it’s worth noting that after hitting a series low two episodes ago, "Caprica" has bounced back about 18% in viewers and has matched its series high in A18-49 rating. The six-episode average declined slightly to 1.23M viewers and a 0.4 A18-49 rating.  [@TravisYanan]

After a solid opening to the season, Syfy’s "Ghost Hunters" drew 2.21M viewers and a 1.0 A18-49 rating in week two.  The show was flat in A18-49 rating and down just 8% in total viewers from the week prior. [@TravisYanan]

The February 27th episode of "Legend of the Seeker" bounced up a tad to 2.23M viewers after hitting a season low the week prior (2.11M). Season two is averaging 2.41M viewers through 13 episodes. [TV by the Numbers]

1. "Check the Circuit!" - March 14, 2010

I hope Smallville can convince Michael Rosenbaum to come back. Supes needs his Lex.

2. Naver Drol - March 14, 2010

Is it just me or are none of the embeded YouTube videos working? The SyFy channel embeded video is there… the rest show as broken.

3. Craig - March 14, 2010

Lovin that SGU trailer. Looks awesome!!!!

4. Craig - March 14, 2010

@ #2 Its just you, try restarting your browser.

5. Darkwing - March 14, 2010

what the hell is the audio? I load the page and then there’s this dialogue about a cat being let out of the bag and about getting into sam?

6. Darkwing - March 14, 2010

oh wait, I think I figured it out

7. ManBearPig - March 14, 2010

@3 Craig

I concur. I can’t wait for SGU!

8. Harry Ballz - March 14, 2010

Erica Durance hasn’t signed a contract for Season 10 of Smallville??

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA………………(wipes tear)……oh, sorry…………….Durance is holding out for more money?? Why??

If she leaves the show, the only line she’ll have to memorize for her next job are……”do you want fries with that burger?”

Some people with NO talent don’t know when they’ve got it GOOD!

9. Adam E - March 14, 2010

@2. Naver Drol

Embedded YouTube videos never work for me on this site – I just clink the link to YouTube’s site

I wonder if it has to do with the browser? I use IE.

10. MC1 Doug - March 14, 2010

#2: They videos never work for me either.

11. Lou - March 14, 2010

Perry coming back to Smallville? Michael McKean was AWESOME as Perry White and personally, I think he’s LOOOOONG overdue for a reappearance.

12. The First Son of Krypton - March 14, 2010

The SGU trailer was great – I may have to start watching again… hmm…

“How do we get people watchign SGU again? Lets make it more like SG-1, full of action and not BOOOORRRING dialogue and pointless returns to Earth via the silly stupid plot device stones”

As for Smallville, they must of assumed Zod would be the final villain of the series but now they’ve been renewed, the only logically step would be to have Lex make an appearance, blaze of glory like, and Clark to fly off in his suit (which, I can finally accept we will only see about 5 – 10 seconds of)

13. Cap'n - March 14, 2010

Inside tip – Tony Todd (Worf’s brother Kurn in TNG, Grown up Jake Sisko in DS9, & a Hirogen in Voyager) is currently working on a secretive NBC pilot called, “The Event.”

14. Alf, in pog form - March 15, 2010

Mmmmmm….that SGU trailer makes it looks like the coming episodes might be un-boring, unlike the earlier episodes which were very un-un-boring.

15. CarlG - March 15, 2010

SGU really isn’t doing it for me. Stargate and DarkerAndEdgier go together like tiramisu and sauerkraut.

16. Nemesis4909 - March 15, 2010

Are those air dates right? Smallville airs on a Friday and March 29th isn’t a Friday.

17. captain_neill - March 15, 2010

Haven’t seen V yet, starts in April in UK

From what I read is Val the Robin Maxwell on the new V? Robin Maxwell gave birth to a half alien child whose growth was accelerated and became the Starchild.

18. Jeff - March 15, 2010

Loving the new ‘V’! All except for the Visitors being called the “V’s”. ‘V’ is for victory and a symbol of the Resistance in the original show. It just does not seem proper to use that symbol to describe them. I hope that at some point (once the Resistance begins to form) it will become their symbol.

19. Eclectrek - March 15, 2010

Lord help us! I hope SGU didn’t just “Baltar” Dr. Rush as in the original BSG!

20. captain_neill - March 15, 2010

18

They use the Vs to describe the Vistors in the new version? Dang

The V was the mark of the Resistance, is the new V any good.

I loved the original mini series and the Final Battle but the TV series was quite silly. But you got to love jane badler as Diana.

21. DeBeckster - March 15, 2010

I’m looking forward on the new V to see, “Heeeere mousy mousy mousy.”

22. JIM - March 15, 2010

this one is good too:

23. Eli - March 15, 2010

Arrghh I shouldn’t have watched that teaser for the next new “Fringe”

Now I want it back even more!!!

God it’s such a great show!!!

24. Lore - March 15, 2010

Season 10 of Smallville will make Erica Durance’s 7th season on the show. #8 Harry Ballz makes it his business to trash this actress on this site every time she is mentioned. This is a smear campaign that should be addressed and stopped.

25. Cafe 5 - March 15, 2010

It would take an enormous revamping of SGU to make it watchable. Something new and completely different won’t bring back all the viewers that were chased off because of the previous dreck fopped off on us by the producers as entertainment. My grandfather use to say you could sprinkle powered sugar on road apples to to make them seem more appealing, but you still wouldn’t want to consume them.

26. davidfuchs - March 15, 2010

#25

That’s what the trailer looks like, at the very least. Less “ZOMG DRAMAZ” and more blow stuff up. Frankly, if they went to a more SG1-style format, I’d be happy, because there was nothing wrong with that formula and as long as the actors are good they can still spin it and take it in different directions.

Judging by the difference between the S1 trailer and S1.5, there’s a lot more sci-fi elements and action, which I think are welcome. Only “Time” last season really seemed on par with other good sci-fi shows, hopefully the rest of the season will change my opinion.

27. Kent Butabi - March 15, 2010

# 23, I am not attempting to join any smear campaign but honestly I cannot stand her acting or the way her character is written. What the heck was that dancing in the wedding dress moment a few episodes back? I’m so glad my wife didn’t walk in and see me watching that or I’d probably have to stop watching out of embarrassment.

28. Kent Butabi - March 15, 2010

meant # 24, sorry.

29. LordEdzo - March 15, 2010

The storytelling on “Caprica” seems to be all over the place. For example, several early episodes focused on Sam Adama teaching Willie Adama to be a badass Tauron, but this has gone away, as if it never existed. Then there was Sam’s ridiculous kidnapping of Amanda Greystone, which seemed to shake her up a little, but then was completely forgotten. And Joseph Adama has suffered the most: In the pilot, he was truly badass, but the series has crippled him with each passing episode, and he’s become such a complete *wuss* that he can’t even chase down the kid who said Tamara was still alive, and last week featured him stumbling through the v-world like a blind man. I want to see the badass Joseph Adama as he was described in BSG. I don’t know what the frell I’m watching in “Caprica.”

And I wish they would just shut up and start mass-producing Cylons, which should be the *real* stars of this show.

So many storylines are competing for attention that I can’t keep them straight, let alone remember them all. The petulant “Zoe inside the Cylon” has been dragged out for so long that I don’t care about her anymore. We need a better explanation for her silence than the reason given a couple of weeks ago: “I’ve decided not to make my presence known” or some such drenn.

I’m really looking forward to “SGU” returning in a few weeks when “Caprica” goes on hiatus. And unless the second half “Caprica’s” first season totally blows me away, then I can’t imagine ever wanting or needing to purchase the DVDs. The show is less than mediocre compared with BSG.

30. thebiggfrogg - March 15, 2010

@2 Unless, you are like me and in China. Then it is you and a few million other people. Grrr.

31. thebiggfrogg - March 15, 2010

I see some of your points on continuity, but as for Joe Adama. Uh, being a ‘wuss’ is a consistent continuity point. Lose half your family and see how ‘badass’ you are. A little depression and withdrawal makes sense. As for the other bit: You take any 40 something guy and have him chase a teen and see who gets who and who gets away (unless a tazer is involved) ; )

There is ‘badass’ and then there is ‘badass at 40′ or (50, 50, et.al. )

I’m still on board with Caprica despite a few of the issues mentioned. I think it is a worthy successor (precessor?) to BSG.

32. Cap'n - March 16, 2010

@7. ManBearPig

You’re just a myth – you don’t really exist

33. Harry Ballz - March 16, 2010

Oh, I don’t know…..I’ve known a few ManBearPigs in my time!

34. engle - March 20, 2010
