Economically, I did a little research and found that the Federation would be a Technocracy, with energy units being measured as the "Federation Credit", or 'currency'.

And since this appears to be a dead topic anyway, I'll keep talking.

The thing about Rodenberry's vision of the future is that it has always been far to niave. I've thrown about the idea of a moneyless society for years now and still can't think of a way in which it could work in a super modern society. The replicator would certainly take commerce in a different direction but a craftsmen would still like to get something for his product. And while a barter system might work, it is far too small a system to cover everything.

Mankind will never evolve past it's emotion and emotion is the cause of all good and evil we are capable of. There will be evil men 400 years from now (assuming the species survives that long). Men will forget history or belive they can do it 'right' where others failed.

And there will always be a military of some sort, even if its name is benign, such as Starfleet. The MACO's exsistance in the 24th or 25th centuries is not far fetched. There will always be a need to fight, whether it's to protect one's home, country, society, or planet. Maybe.

Maybe we can move beyond it, but i doubt it will happen in the next 400 years. Just my thoughts.

@30 Yes, it is plausible. First off, there are billions of beings in this fiction and I am sure at least one of them could have made the switch. Second, since this is Star Trek and money is supposed to mean little, then the switch would have been made because of ideals.

Starfleet is not a military, though it is organized as such and capable of such action but it is mostly space based combat. I for one would rather die with a weapon in my hand and my feet on solid ground than die at my post as a deck hand or electrician or any other job while aboard a starship. As a MACO, you would have had a little more control on how you meet your end. Notice I said 'a little'.

For anyone else who cares (HA!). I can watch every single episode and read every book and find imperfections, things I would fix, improve, get rid of or expand on. That is the nature of imagination. Everyone sees things in a different way. Some of you like Rick Berman and some, like me, despise him. It's all a matter of interpretation and perspective. I can understand a critique. But there are a few 'critiques' here that have used words and tone that would lead most to believe its just hate. But then, I suppose, hate is an opinion as well and just as welcome as love.

Personally I wish Cryptic had used the fiction put forth in the Destiny trilogy. I feel it would have been a much better backdrop for this 'war' game than what they came up with, but I don't think that what they’ve created is bad. They used the movies as a stepping stone, obvious considering that only the films are viewed as canon, with a sprinkle from the books such as the Titan and New Frontier series.

I feel I could have done much better than the creative and design teams at Cryptic. But I have zero doubt that a great many people would say I screwed up and I’m stupid (yeah yeah) so it doesn’t matter the work or the creator, there will always be those who think they can do better.

I've read all 236 Original Series Star Trek novels except for the new one, Inception. I think I'll read this too, but it's not TOS.

@27, 33 and 36:

There is a difference between hating and criticising. There are some here who bash everything which isn't TOS and there are some, like me, who just aren't thrilled of certain Star Trek products like others are. Now, I was to harsh when saying this is 'poorly written fan fiction'. I'll take that back. The writer made a good effort and I salute him in that. With my current experience, I can't repeat what he has done. But it still doesn't appeal to me. I don't hate 'The needs of the many', but I will be on the lookout for something else.

#33 There is NOTHING that will stop the haters, they are worse than Species 8472 or the Borg.

They will find something negative to say no matter what, and 90% of the time they say nothing constructive at all.

On a positive note:

I found the story very interesting, and exciting. It ties the game to the Star Trek universe more for me and makes it even more fun.

It makes me feel like it's all one big Star Trek story (game & the book combined), and that I'm a part of it. I get to take my custom-tailored ship and crew out and try to stop the Undine. Or at least understand them more.......

Bravo to the writers, make some more I can't get enough.
