First Look: AMC’s The Walking Dead

AMC has released a batch of images giving us our first look at The Walkers in the network’s adaptation of the Robert Kirkman comic "The Walking Dead". The six-episode first season — written, produced and directed by Frank Darabont — started production this past week in Atlanta, Georgia and premieres October 2010. Check out some more images below (plus a set of animated sketches showing the deterioration into a zombie at this link).

New ThunderCats animated series premiering next year on Cartoon Network
Warner Brothers Animation has begun production on "ThunderCats", an all-new animated series for Cartoon Network. Based on the 1980’s series of the same name, the series will premiere in 2011.

“In addition to being Warner Bros. Animation’s first anime series, ‘ThunderCats’ marks our most ambitious foray yet into fantasy,” said Register. “The realism and dynamic visual style we’ve achieved are sure to thrill viewers, and the cool weapons, vehicles and technology should help the show appeal to a diverse audience.”

Roaring to life through WBA and Studio4°C’s use of the Japanese animated artistry of anime, “ThunderCats” characters Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.

The new “ThunderCats” will appeal to viewers who have loved the characters all their lives as well as young newcomers to the franchise. A sweeping tale combining swords and science and boasting ferocious battles with the highest of stakes, the grand origin story of Prince Lion-O’s ascension to the throne – and of those who would thwart his destiny at any cost – takes on epic dimensions in this sharp new telling. As the forces of good and evil battle each other in the quest for the fabled Stones of Power, Lion-O and his champions learn valuable lessons of loyalty, honor and mortality in every episode.

WBA also released a piece of concept art, which you’ll find below (click to enlarge).

Decision on Heroes TV movie could be made soon
"Heroes" creator Tim Kring told TV Guide that he’ll meet with NBC executives this month to discuss the possibility of ending the recently canceled series with a two or four-hour TV movie. Kring adds that should the network give the go-ahead, the plot will skip ahead a year or two to see the effect of Claire’s revelation at the end of season four:

"There will be a huge cultural and social change in the world," says Kring. "Some [of our characters] will be hiding, some struggling, some basking in the glory."

Claire, who desperately wanted a normal life, will become a reluctant spokesperson for the abnormals. Sylar (Zachary Quinto) will again struggle with his dark side. And Adrian Pasdar will likely return, though not as Nathan, who died.

Despite what would enviably be a long delay between the finale — which aired last February — and the proposed movie, Kring is confident he can get the entire cast back if given a green light: "I’ve spoken with everyone. They’re all eager to participate."

Caprica Renew/Cancel update
Still no official news from Syfy about the second season chances of "Caprica" (whose second half of season one episodes will air this fall), but Airlock Alpha is reporting that renewal chances remain "strong":

"I can’t speak for everyone, or anyone in fact, but I like what I’m seeing," one source at the NBC Universal affiliate told Airlock Alpha, asking not to be identified. "This is the kind of deep, sophisticated program that gets a channel attention, just like what ‘Battlestar’ has done for us in recent years."

Also, Syfy’s senior vice president of Syfy Digital, posted on his Twitter account that a decision on whether or not the show would be renewed for a second season wouldn’t be made until the second half of the first season runs [via Caprica TV]:

Q) @nancyann68 So are you saying that the rumors #Caprica is going to be cancelled/is in trouble are false? :) A) Yes. NOT cancelled.

Q) @foxylucius Has Caprica been renewed? A) We need to run the 2nd half of Season 1 before we get to that point. First steps first ;)

Fans to stage blackout in front of ABC studios in effort to save FlashForward

Meanwhile, fans of the canceled ABC series "FlashForward" plan to gather in front of ABC Network and affiliate offices in New York, L.A., Chicago, Detroit and Atlanta on June 10 to stage a 2:17 blackout [via Variety]:

That’s right.

For two minutes and 17 seconds, fans of the show are going to pretend to be passed out in front of ABC offices.

Just like the two minute and 17 second blackouts on "FlashForward."

Moving forward, executive producer Carlton Cuse re-iterated that he and fellow executive producer Damon Lindelof won’t be doing any sort of sequel or spin-off, but Cuse acknowledges that Disney, being the owner of the franchise, may well revisit it sometime in the future [via sl-LOST]:

"Now that said, we’ve also acknowledged that we’re not the owners of Lost. It is owned by the Walt Disney company and it is an incredibly valuable franchise. Worth billions as opposed to millions of dollars. And we completely understand that the Disney company will choose to continue to make money under the Lost franchise at some future point…"

"There’s no way when you tell a story that you can tie up all the loose ends, there are many creative minds who’ll come stories to ABC and propose to take Lost, using franchise label in the future, and that’s great. The story we wanted to tell was that tv series and that ends in May."

Rumor: ABC rebooting Alias?
With "LOST" now out of the picture, ABC is looking for another show to hold onto that departing audience and according to a report at E! Online, the network is reportedly considering a "reboot" of J.J. Abrams’ spy series "Alias":

Again, it’s only very initial talk at this point, but I’m told that the development folks over at the Alphabet network are considering doing a new version of Alias that would borrow some elements of the original series that starred Jennifer Garner (and Michael Vartan, Victor Garber and some guy named Bradley Cooper who must have slipped into oblivion since). But the series would most likely not include any sort of complex mythological throughline such as the Rambaldi prophecy (a storyline that lost some of the fans).

No deal for Ghost Whisperer at ABC; Officially dead
After CBS canceled "Ghost Whisperer", ABC expressed interest in bringing the show over to their network (ABC Studios is a co-producer). However, the network has passed on the series. Executive producers Ian Sander and Kim Moses released the following statement:

"After five wonderful seasons and over 100 episodes, we are disappointed to announce Ghost Whisperer will not be returning for a sixth season. We’ve had an incredible experience and owe a debt of gratitude to everyone involved. We continue our relationship with ABC Studios and look forward to developing many more successful projects together in the future."

Incredibly excited for Walking Dead on AMC. A great comic, plus Darabont behind it (Shawshank and the underrated and misunderstood The Mist) makes it a can’t miss in my book. As for Heroes, let it die. And I say that as a fan who watched all 4 seasons. This season with Sullivan and the carnival helped it end on a high note. A movie would be a bad idea, and I certainly hate the idea that Pasdar could come back as “someone else” and that Sylar struggles with his dark side (again?- Yawn). Just let it end…

Everyone has to do the blackout!! I will be at abc in ny that day for sure!!!

Just frigging give Peter his old power back. That’s one of the main reasons the show died (aside from major disorganization on what exactly they were doing) but come on, we all want to see an hour long fight between Peter and every villain in the Heroes-verse

THEY CANNOT CANCEL CAPRICA.

I would be damned if they do.

The show needs a bit more conflict in the bsg-world. I think its time we see the revolt against humans a bit more earlier !

Cannot… wait…. for Fringe….

Kill Caprica.

More zombies… I think we’re pretty saturated with vampires and zombies at this point.

thunder… thunder… thunder… thundercats! oooooooooooo!
i used to watch this when i was a kid! I’ll be looking forward to this. :)

You know, I always love reading these articles. You do a really good job with them!

I’ve never really seen “Lost,” but doesn’t it seem a little early to nominate it for a TCA Heritage award?

“M*A*S*H” probably will get it and probably deserves it. But I would like to see “Twin Peaks” win it. It was a pioneering and under-rated show. Like “Flash Forward,” which I’ve also never seen, “Peaks” went off the air with a major cliff-hanger that unfortunately was never resolved. But it’s influence on many of the darker dramas, especially those with blacker comedic elements, owes much to David Lynch and “Twin Peaks.”

The Doctor Who – Adventure game is great for a free piece of software, not perfect but I highly recommend go and download it :)

I really hope that this Doctor who regenarates at the end of this season. This guy really really sucks.

Forget the Alias reboot, just continue the show where it left off by bringing back all the major characters. The Rimbaldi stuff was already all resolved in the finale anyway, with Sloane being trapped underground for life.

It looks like a Lost spinoff will happen sooner rather than later. Probably 2011 or 2012.

Love the Flashforward black-out plans. I hope it works.

I really like the newest who-agree twin peaks was a show way ahead of its time–thundercatsback again-what next–thundar the barbarian with ookla the mok? Kirby Lives-i wish–abc should use abrams to make a trek series–yeh thats the ticket–

11 – I disagree, He’s not Tennant nor any of the others who have gone before, but it still think he brings something worthwhile to the part.
A more vulnerable doctor similar to what we saw from Peter Davison.

Besides i was started to get a bit bored of the Tennant’s portrayal so he’s a refreshing change.

Looking forward to The Walking Dead. Not crazy about the title sounds like Wall-King Dead. Reminds me of Wal-Mart, Burger King. Maybe Zombie World or Zombie Planet. Although the newspaper headline The Dead Walk! from Day of the Dead was brilliant.

Bring on the zombies…I suppose.

In 1968-1978-1985, Zombie movies were cool! They were horrifying and shocking, The latter movies, Dawn Of The Dead and Day of the dead signified what NC-17 rating stood for.

Now the movies are PG, PG-13 and R. A little zombie saturated. I hope that the tv zombies are unique in some way.

I like the idea of new Thundercats, hoping for original actor’s voices.

I’ll be angry if they cancel Jeffster.

I doubt that causing a 2 minutes and 17 second inconvenience will be enough to convince a TV network to change their mind.

idiots- we don’t need another thundercats cartoon, it’s not the 8o’s we can do a live action movie, masters of the universe too!

Is the guy behind the Flashforward blackout Tim Brazeal?

#18. M-BETA

The idea is to stage a blackout in different cities / countries in the same day, June 10.

At the moment we have LA, NY, Chicago, Seattle, Toronto, Detroit, London, Germany , Dublin.

Not to mention the letters & friendship bracelets that are being sent to ABC president Stephen McPherson

http://www.preventtheblackout.com/

Hopefully a lot of fans will get behind the Flashforward “blackout”. After a slow start that show was showing a lot of promise so it would be great to see it renewed even if only got a few episodes like what happened with Jericho.

I’ve always wondered how the “walking dead” can be killed again with shotguns or… If they’re already dead, aren’t they just dead anyway, and therefore could not be killed? Hmmm…

My sister had no idea that the Flashforward was canceled until I told her a few days ago. She has not been happy about it and joined the Save Flashforward campaign on Facebook.

I wouldn’t mind a well-written send off for Heroes, although I think that if they have that ability they certainly missed the chance to use it before the cancellation.

Haven looks OK. Could you put it somewhere on Saturday night. One more weekend with C. Thomas Howell or Traci Lords and I’m gonna throw myself into the nearest black hole. (I said hole, not ‘ho,’ so never mind the Traci Lords joke.)

I just can’t seem to care about Caprica. It seems like such a poorly-acted show (with the wonderful exception of Esai Morales) and a sudsy mess. It needs more of the sharp focus of BSG, or something all its own. Right now, it lumbers to get through each hour.

When is SyFy showing Dr. Who????

“Lion-O, Mumm-Ra, Panthro, Cheetara and others will spring off the screen with realistic cat-like characteristics inconceivable in previous incarnations.” — Images of Lion-O licking his crotch while Mumm-Ra looks on in disgust.

Thanks. That means a lot. :)

“When is SyFy showing Dr. Who????”

They aren’t/won’t. BBC America purchased the U.S. rights and airs the show Saturday’s at 9:00 p.m. We’re three episodes behind BBC (Episode 10 – “Vincent and the Doctor” aired last night in the U.K., while the U.S. saw episode 7 – “Amy’s Choice”).

Can we ever take Thundercats seriously after the Robot Chicken parody? I don’t think so.

All I can say is that those zombies look really scary.

@26

Vincent & the Doctor is teh best episode of the current series so far.
Your in for a treat.

I haven’t been keeping up with the new Doctor Who (I have no television and horrible bandwidth limits…, besides which I didn’t watch other two much either). Didn’t someone mention in a past article post that he reminded them of Tom Baker? So what is Trekmovie community members’ verdict on him? Relative to ‘Doctor Who’ of course… i mean, it would be unfair on any science fiction franchise to compare with Star Trek!

Off topic but does anyone have the link for the video where Picard attacks Kirk and after the credits it shows the Enterprise burning up in the atmosphere as Picard and Data toast? Really wanna see it again but can’t find it.

I agree Vincent & the Doctor is teh best episode of the current series so far. But that might not be a good thing the writting so far for the series has been very poor, I also think that matt smith is getting better but no where near the standard that the BBC programme desevers.

They need a new assistant as Amy is too weak and poorly acted or written I can’t deside which

Oh wow… I used to watch ThunderCats when I was a kid. It was one of my favourite shows. And Studio4°C behind it as the production team? Definitely gonna watch. I’ll have to wait for the DVD/BD though… America is so far away…

@30: I can’t speak for anyone else but I’m very happy with Matt Smith’s performance so far. He really sells the “old man in a young man’s body” very well. He’s actually more like Peter Davsion in that respect, but a lot more off-kilter (like Tom Baker/David Tennant).

I quite like the new Doc Who – Tennants ongoing hamming was getting to the point of irritability saturation. Stories appear a tad weak though… but early days.
I’m glad FlashForward has been dumped- I liked the idea, but the casting of that Fiennes and his awful theatrics was too much to bear.
Lost has finished….good – it just went on for too long….
Heroes became too convoluted and lost its appeal after s01…bye bye
I’m looking forward to the Terra Nova malarky…to be fair it does sound like a fair rip off of Julian May’s series: Saga of the Pliocene Exiles/Intervention/Galactic Milieu…if they have ripped it off they had better do the books justice as they are one of the best Sci-Fi series I have ever read…only time will tell…
Looking very much forward to the second half of Caprica s01- intelligent stuff.
Please take no offence at my statements. I direct them at no-one in particular.
its been a long, miserable and wet Queens Birthday weekend here in Dunedin, NZ. I just needed to vent spleen.

Ma’ aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaam!

Will they ever make a movie of Greg Bear’s Eon??!! Come on people, pick it up and make it!

The Walking Dead sounds like an awesome idea. Zombie movies have gotten cheap but I think an ongoing series could revitalize the genre, that and I’m tired of all of the crappy vampire stuff that’s flooded the market so hopefully this will be something new. As for Thunder Cats, I used to watch the old cartoon and loved it, but it seems these days that remakes of old cartoons are nothing short of insulting to the source material so I doubt this will be any different.

Re: LOST’s future, I’ll want a massive PS3 adventure game to answer all of the many unanswered questions*. (That’ll never happen, but, ooooh if it only would! An epic adventure game, like, 16 hours minimum).

*The unanswered questions:

Concerning LOST, I hope Disney creates a sitcom with Hugo and Ben on the Island. It could be called Still Lost or After Lost or Lost & Found. Hugo is the dumb but lovable guardian of the Island, with Ben as his not-100%-reformed sidekick. There will be laughs galore as Ben falls back into his old ways of trying to take over the Island, and Hugo has to rescue Ben when his evil plans backfire. With Rose and Bernard as the irascible but lovable older neighbors, Cindy as the harried single mom of the wise-cracking pre-teens, and Yogi, the friendly polar bear family pet!
