New Mortal Kombat Viral Video Features Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade [UPDATED]

Today a mysterious new shot film tied into the Mortal Kombat video game franchise was released. Titled "Mortal Kombat Rebirth", it isn’t clear if this is related to a new video game, or to a possible Mortal Kombat film. One thing is clear, the video features former Voyager Borg Babe Jeri Ryan as a famous MK character. [UPDATE: Ryan Tweets About Video]

Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade in Mortal Combat viral video

This new video showed up today (in HD) on a YouTube Channel titled "Mortal Kombat Rebrith".

"Mortal Kombat" is a series of popular video games spanning back to 1992. The latest game ("Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe") was released in 2008 for PS3 and XBox 360, with Mortal Kombat 9 currently in development. In the nineties there were two MK feature films, a live action TV show and an animated TV series. A new feature film is also reportedly in development. The above video features classic Mortal Kombat characters, including Jax, Baraka, and Reptile. Jeri Ryan is playing the MK’s first female character Sonya Blade.

What isn’t clear is what this new video is for. Speculation is focusing on it probably being linked to the next game, but possibly for a movie. As gaming site Kotaku notes:

Last we heard, Warner Bros. was looking to reboot the film franchise. If this is the fruit of that effort, we approve wholeheartedly.
More likely this could be a live-action trailer for the next game. Either way, we approve.

UPDATE: Ryan says it is a proof to sell film to WB

On Tuesday night Jeri Ryan sent out a few tweets via (@JeriLRyan) about Mortal Kombat:

It's not a game trailer. Actually was made for the director to sell WB on his vision for a reimagined MK film.
I did it as a favor to a friend. No idea yet what WB's reaction to it was. And I'm not sure how you can contact WB…
to push them to make it. But you guys are resourceful…! ;-)

Thanks to Jason King for the tip

I for one would enjoy seeing Jeri Ryan perform Sonya’s flip-upside-down-leg-grab attack.

AWESOMENESS!!!!

Michael Jai White is such a badass.

Another reboot? Phew, that lets the writers off the hook to come up with NEW ideas!

Another face for the spank bank!

There’s potential in there. I’ve always liked the first one so I’ll give it a try.

Wouldn’t be too bad if they hadn’t already killed off Johnny Cage…again. :P

Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade is awesome though.

The first MK movie was a great videogame to movie adaptation. Now the second, a load of horse sh**!

I’m really thinking this reboot has some great potential – and the early cast seems to speak to that potential!

I’ll admit, not too bad a video backstory for a mindless fighter game.

Better than the 90’s films.

Jeri Ryan confirmed on Twitter this is a campaign to launch a new movie:

OUTSTANDING!! Finish Them!!!

I also liked the first movie, Heroic,Corny, Over the top!
Yes, Johnny cage died in the 2nd movie. At that point I lost all faith in the rest of the film. Another peeve I had is that characters from MK3 made an appearance. I was hoping they would match the movies with the games.

Thank God MK4 never made it to the big screen. Looking foreward to MK-Reboot!

I’m sold! Loved every second of it!

MK came out in ’92! My God where has the time gone?

This was very high quality trailer, I can see this film grossing between 100mil and 300mil. I am very impressed, the shot quality reminds me that of the Dark Knight and or Watchman, dark, and not cheesy.

Just heard on the news, yesterday, that Jeri Ryan’s new tv show (now called “Body of Truth”) has been picked up by the network (ABC?), and is being shot entirely here, in RI. This is a pretty big deal for RI, since the state is in dire straits. Anyway, I’ll be keeping an eye out for Jeri and Dana Delaney… although I’m sure they are being kept hidden in some hermetically sealed jar, somewhere.

I’m really impressed with this “trailer”. I’m not a big Mortal Kombat fan, but if they made a movie based on what I just saw, I would definitely want to see it.

Why do they always have to Kill Johnny Cage…

Gotta correct myself: Ryan’s new show is called “Body of Proof,” not “Truth.” It’s either my car radio or my hearing…

To be honest, I prefer this version of Mortal Kombat over the previous versions.

I would love to see how they’d tackle Raiden, as well as explain Sub-Zero. Maybe they could keep it ‘real’ but allude to the mythology behind it. I mean, we already saw Baraca and his retractable blades, so there’s gonna be some suspension of disbelief.

I approve – WB go for it

Wow, could have a warning for graphic content, I was eating and saw the guy snacking on a human head and after that the nude lady on the table cut open. Almost lost my meal.

Otherwise this video looks great. Keep everything as is and make the movie.

At first I was furious to what they did with the MK universe in this video (SMB and DOOM movies, anyone?), then I cooled down and figured as long as it’s a great movie, then I’m all for it.

ok, i’m sold on the idea… it’ll have to be NC17 to be uber however (and does any studio have the balls for that? nope)

I’m sure I’m going to gripe about all the ways the movie disregards the plot of the games. I’m also sure it will be better than the previous films. I think the TV series (Mortal Kombat Conquest) is still at the top in terms of blending sticking close to the plot of the games and still being interesting in its own right.

I’ve only played the game a couple times (not enough to know there was acually a storyline or backround to characters) and was never really into it, but seriously, if that was a movie it would be horrifically intense (thats a good thing).

Too bad its not a trailer……

#14…in Jeri’s case, itd be a Borg alcove instead of a hermetically-sealed jar;)

Uh, re: the digital image. First rule of combat: lead with your t*ts! Something tells me you charge into combat that way and you’ll end up t*ts up.

Great, another “excuse article” for this website to show photos of large chested women. I am not impressed.

No where does it say that its a reboot. People need to stop jumping to conclusions. Its a movie based on the video game — it doesn’t mean its a “reboot” of the original films.

“This video has been removed by the user”… interesting. Why would they take it down? It was awesome.
