We have another update and some rumors to deal with for Free Enterprise 2, the sequel to the 1998 Star Trek-themed cult-comedy starring William Shatner. All indications are that this film is happening and now actress Alicia Witt has let it slip that she is in the film as well. There is also a rumor that the film will include cameos from Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart and JJ Abrams. Robert Meyer Burnett responds to TrekMovie about that below.
Alicia Witt confirms Free Enterprise 2 role
In our last Free Enterprise 2 update, we reported that Old Spice commercial actor Isaiah Mustafa revealed he would start working on Free Enterprise 2 this week (making him the second actor to confirm a role following William Shatner who recently said he will be shooting for Free Enterprise 2 in July). Our last article also noted that Dollhouse actress Eliza Dushku "randomly" sent out a tweet about Free Enterprise last week. Shortly after that article went live, actress Alicia Witt, sent out a tweet stating "So has anyone seen the movie Free Enterprise? Just, y’know, totally random question." (which, tellingly , was soon re-tweeted by Dushku). Witt, who had her acting debut in 1984 at nine years old playing little Alia in David Lynch’s Dune , has most recently been seen in recurring roles for Friday Night Lights and Law & Order: Criminal Intent. And when you go to Alicia’s official site and check her acting resume it lists "Free Enterprise 2 – Dir. Robert Meyer Burnett" as her next project. So Witt joins Shatner and Mustafa as the third actor to confirm a role in the film, with Dushku a possible fourth.

Abrams, Nimoy and Stewart too? – Unlikely
After TrekMovie ran our last article, Slashfilm reported the same news about Shatner and Mustafa, but they also added this bit at the end.
I’ve also been told by an anonymous tipper that Leonard Nimoy, Patrick Stewart, and JJ Abrams have been written into the script. No word on if any of these actors/directors will be in the actual movie playing themselves.
The addition of such Star Trek heavyweights into the film would be huge news of course. Back in 2005, Free Enterprise director/co-writer Robert Meyer Burnett did say that that the original draft of the sequel had Nimoy in it, however Nimoy has since retired from acting. TrekMovie asked Free Enterprise director Robert Meyer Burnett for a reaction to the Slashfilm rumor and his reply via text was:

Burnett will still not confirm or deny any of the other reports related to Free Enterprise 2, but TrekMovie will continue to keep an eye on the situation.

I would really love to see Nimoy in the next movie. In addition by repeating an occasional request in hopes the “Supreme Court” reads this page, I would still really love to see Bill Murray in it, as well.

She’s cute –I don’t know why they didn’t keep her on “Law and Oder: Criminal Intent”.
11 – I got the distinct impression that all of her lines were re-recorded in post (by her, I’m sure). They sounded too odd to have been the on-set delivery.
21 – I said much the same when she was on L&O:CI. She can definitely fill out a sweater. (*swoon*)
22 – I would’ve preferred her to having Julianne Nicholson come back. Her character just didn’t have as much personality as Witt’s Detective Falacci.
Blockbuster doesn’t carry Free Enterprise in store, sadly enough. However BB has it on there website so you should be able to get it through their direct access program if you aren’t an online member. Netflix has it as a DVD by mail only option right now. Amazon is currently listing it for sale at sub $10 new right now.

Alicia Witt is a great addition–i remember reading bout her when dune came out-she was quite the prodigy child reading and musically talented at the age of 3 in fact her life almost sounded like the role she was playing in dune–and yes any trek scifi media fans who havent seen free enterprise–highly recommended–they got a lotta mail saying that their lives were just like the main characters—u need to know alot bout fantasy,scifi,trek,comics to get a lot of the references–make sure ya know yer logans run too haha–shat is great in it spoofing himself–this is a very original movie–its great a sequel is being made–

So….We got all these celebrities “confirmed” (sorta) for the sequel…but what about Eric McCormack and Rafer Weigel as Mark and Robert? Or Phil LaMarr? I can see the appeal of celebs to push a film into the limelight, but the original actors were the soul of the original. I sure hope their back.

That’s the little girl from Dune? That was 25 years ago. There must be a more recent version. Maybe it is her. Wow.
And yes….yay verily….everyone go see this who hasn’t. A classic. I reach it, I really do.
I could see Eric McCormack reprising his role, since he was willing to do the commentary on the DVD re-release of of the movie ( but remember, for him “…a little Shatner goes a long way…” ). Weigel, I’m not so sure about. Was surprised to hear his name and see him doing some sort of sports anchor gig on CNN a couple of Saturdays ago. don’t know if it’s a regular gig for him, as I don’t watch sports or sports news …

Free Enterprise was a charming if somewhat awkward movie. I watched it again recently and was surprised how well it’s held up. But a sequel 11 years later? It seems pretty clear that the success of JJ’s Star Trek opened the door for this. Not sure it’s necessary, and if they don’t get Rafer and Eric back…yeesh.
