peggmi3It looks like Simon Pegg, Star Trek’s new Scotty, is going to appear in another JJ Abrams produced movie. According to a new report, Pegg is in talks to to appear in Mission: Impossible IV, reprising his role from Mission: Impossible III.

More Pegg for MI:V

Tonight Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog is reporting that Simon Pegg is in talks to to appear in Mission: Impossible: IV. Pegg joined the franchise for the 2006 film Mission: Impossible: III, which was directed by JJ Abrams, and written by Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. His wise-cracking tech geek Benji Dunn earned Pegg high marks and added comic relief to the spy action blockbuster. Pegg’s work in MI3 likely led to him being cast as Scotty in JJ Abrams 2009 Star Trek movie. Here is a clip of Pegg from MI3:

The fourth Mission brings back Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt, who is co-producing with JJ Abrams. Brad Bird (The Incredibles) is directing and production is expected to start this fall, with a release planned for December 16, 2011.

Any scene Pegg has with Tom Cruise, he can “phone it in” and still look good!

Cruise is a hopeless actor!

2. Phaser Guy - July 19, 2010

The big question is will Ving Rhames be back?

3. Simon - July 19, 2010

#1 – I would like 1/1000th of his success being “helpless”.

Tom Cruise is a hugely successful actor and film star, with charisma and charm that is recognised worldwide. Yes, his weirdness off-screen has caused problems and Paramount blamed his behaviour for badly damaging the success of Mission: Impossible 3 last time, but he was superb in the film. Since we’re unlikely to get an Alias movie, these films will do nicely!! What would Alias be without Marshall?

. . . I mean what would M:I:IV be without Benji? ;)

Brad Bird directing a big-budget live-action type thing? Huzzah!

… and it’s a franchise cutout starring Tom Cruise? **gloom**

I guess time will tell.

The big question is will there be a plot this time and not just a fireworks show.

I thought MI:III was easily the best of the three movies, balancing the team-based spy work (Vatican, breaking into the Shanghai office) with the first genuine and believable character pieces. It was everything a sequel to the first two needed to be whilst simultaneously harking back to the original series far more than the first two films.

Hey, don’t get me wrong, I thought Mission Impossible III was a good movie, but only because it was so well crafted it didn’t matter that Cruise played the lead! It was a good flick IN SPITE of him! It would have been a GREAT film WITHOUT him!

I think it was easily Cruise’s finest acting since Eyes Wide Shut. He came close to going a bit over the top in one or two scenes, but ultimately I think the emotionality really came across, much more so than in the first two films.

Fine work from Cruise I think, and you needed the Ethan character to anchor the film. Cruise has his own style, and a different actor would have totally altered the final product (for better or worse). I enjoy the film a lot, and a lot of that is because of Cruise. Whether someone else would have done better is a moot point.

He plays the role great, I am def happy if he comes back..

Tom Cruise was good in the MI films. The only movies featuring him that I liked. “Jerry Maguire” was annoying and overrated, with Cruise trying to be funny but ended up being loud and obnoxious. “Far And Away” sucked, only good part was Colm Meaney. “Minority Report” was a good movie, but Tom Cruise was miscast. “Top Gun” is an overrated movie and Tom Cruise just wasn’t believable in it. “War Of The Worlds” could have been a classic, but the “acting” of Tom Cruise and Dakota Fanning ruined it.

It looks like Tom Cruise may have a much smaller role in the next “Mission Impossible” or may not even be in it if the rumors are to be believed.

12. Roger - July 19, 2010

Oh god another MI movie. Pass!

13. Shadowcat - July 19, 2010

MI 3 was the best of the Mission Impossible films. That being said, I am not a big Tom Cruise fan. I hope Simon does reprise his role as Benji. I thought he did a great job.

14. nuKirk - July 20, 2010

#11–those same rumors have Austin Nichols of One Tree Hill replacing Cruise…

15. skyjedi - July 20, 2010

I would only watch this if they recast Ethan Hunt.
