This year comic book publisher IDW is going zombie crazy with a big crossover event called "Infestation", which includes two Star Trek: Infestation comics for February. We have some preview images of issue 1 below, plus some exclusive comments from IDW on the future of Star Trek with the publisher.
Preview of Star Trek: Infestation #1
In February IDW releases the two issues of Star Trek: Infestation, part of their zombie crossover event with standalone Infestation comics and other issues tied to Transformers, GI Joe and Ghostbusters. The Star Trek Infestation comics are written by Scott and David Tipton with art by Casey Maloney. Here is the synopses for issue 1:
The first-ever event in IDW Publishing’s history crosses over into the Star Trek universe with this two-part, bi-weekly series! A routine visit to a colony world takes a horrifying turn when Admiral Kirk, Mr. Spock and Dr. McCoy find themselves surrounded by hordes of the undead! Spinning out of the pages of last month’s INFESTATION, this series takes the crew of the Enterprise into a dark and deadly new direction!

IDW promises more Star Trek for 2011
After “Star Trek: Khan Ruling in Hell #4” (released next week), the two issues of “Star Trek Infestation” in February are IDW’s only confirmed Star Trek comics for 2011. The publisher has recently announced their solicitations for March 2011 and besides a trade paperback collection of last year’s “Star Trek: Captain’s Log”, there are no new Star Trek titles. That means that March 2011 will be the first month without any Star Trek comic titles since IDW started publishing Trek back in January 2007.
TrekMovie checked in with IDW’s Marketing Director Anna Maria White who assured us that regardless of there being no Trek titles in March, the company remains committed to Star Trek. In an email White stated:
IDW is not moving away from Star Trek. We’ve included it in our company-wide event, INFESTATION, and are working on some big things to start in the spring. There are several Star Trek books in the works.
White also confirmed that within the "several Star Trek books", IDW is planning comics in both the traditional "prime" Star Trek universe and the new movie universe. TrekMovie will continue to update on any new titles coming from IDW.

@1: Couldn’t agree more. Seems like a (very bad) way to fill a void of new Trek material. I wish CBS/Paramount would put all that creative energy into a new TV series in addition to a once-every-few-years movie. I’m just sayin’…

# 5 a Star Trek Christmas special wouldnt be too bad after all it works for Doctor Who. By the way if IDW is going to cross over Star Trek with anything it should be Doctor Who after all they do have the rights to both. Imagine the two longest running sci-fi franchises in history of tv coming together in my mind that would be awsome.

I do wonder how the zombies are supposed to be a threat in the 23rd century of Trek… with the weaponry all being capable of total bodily disintergration. Hell total bodily disintergration over sweeping areas, not just targeted on individual.
Enterprise crewmembers vs zombies = short fight, I would have thought.
Not a zombie fan myself, but as long as the story is done well, it should make for an interesting read.

At this point break out the TOS Phaser rifles, and just sweep them all them zombies on vaporize.

OMG! Sounds like a Voyager After School Special. I dare say zombies could have helped that one.
I’m actually all for it and I’m a diehard star trek fan. It is an intriguing plot. From what I saw on previews of the Ghostbusters infestation, those proton packs don’t exactly vaporize them either and they can do as much damage as the phaser. It’s a new take that uses the TOS crew which in the 60s was about fun and exploring, with tense situations.
Plus its a breath of fresh air. I’m all for keep Trek the way it was, but I like the new Trek too. All in all an interesting story keeps one interested and satsified.
I love zombies – Left 4 Dead, 28 Days Later, The Walking Dead, but zombies in Star Trek? NO.
What’s with all the fascination over zombies these days? I don’t get it.

there was a fanzine that ran for 6 issues back in the mid 80s that explored a Trek-Who story. “The Enterprise and the Doctor” I think.
I only bought the two issues that showed how to build a Reliant from the AMT ERTL Enterprise A and mount it and light it.
I never did it, but damn I miss all my old fanzines.

Not really into the whole zombie thing, but I’ll probably have a look…love how they’re using the Gold Key Star Trek logo!
You see one Zombie you have seen them all. Now they want to re invent Zombies into Trek. In that one the solution is simple. Lock Torpedoes onto the Planet and Fire. Zombies taken care of. End of Story.
I’m okay with the Zombie thing for a brief stint like this, but really Trek has already had them in the form of the Borg or those toxified Vulcans in the expanse.
I thought we were going where no man has gone before.

This is by far the most exciting missing chapter of the saga.
With all the hype about the nx refit in the ships of the line calendar this year, I’d like to see the ship & crew in action again.
We know many fans want to see a Kelvin TV series, so why not fill the void with a series about it?
And finally, if we’re going to do some Trek mash ups, can we talk to Dark Horse & do some that fans have been anticipating for years like:
Klingons vs. Predator
TOS vs. Aliens

I love these IDW Trek comics, in particular the TOS ones.

I too am all for an Enterprise season 5 comic. They can also have an ‘episode’ where Sam Beckett leaps into Jonathan Archer to prevent the atrocius events depicted in ‘These are the voyages.’ That would be a crossover event worth buying! ;)

Wow there really are no original ideas left period. Zombies and Star Trek .. again.
As for Season 5 Enterprise or USS Kelvin tv show not going to happen as long as Les Monves runs Viacom/CBS/Paramount. Les hates Sci-Fi and therefore isn’t interested in developing any new Star Trek tv series. The only reason there was a ST2009 movie was because the studio wanted to see if they could still make money on Trek. If the next Abrams Trek movie bombs at the box office, there probably won’t be anymore Trek movies ever.
Besides a Kelvin tv show would be extremely boring. Nothing major is going to happen to the main characters (Captain, George Kirk, Kirk’s wife, USS Kelvin), getting killed off, until that fateful encounter with the Narada in 2233. Any contrived situation placing the Captain, Kirk, Kirk’s wife or the Kelvin in peril would be a ‘yeah right .. like they are going to kill them off’ LOL.

That fanzine was “Enterprise” by James van Hise. I have issue 2. Notably there is a William Rotsler interview in it. He was a sexploitation director / SF fan / Star Trek novelist who happened to coin the name Nyota for Uhura’s first name in star trek biographies.
There’s usually a copy on ebay.
Zombies and Star Trek, not the biggest fan, but it is cool it’s set in the TMP era. I always thought the security armor was a good idea, it’s too bad it never went past the TOS movies.
Security armor = good idea, but what is the point of the football helmets. This was brought up in the commentary for Star Trek 6 I think, but it bears repeating.

How is it that no one sees opportunities for a Star Trek/Shaun of the Dead crossover here? Someone has a bottle of very, very, very old Scotch whiskey just waiting to be broken out.
The concept is interesting. I think its cool when someone does something different and who is to say that the writers of trek never thought of a similar idea. Of course in Star Trek it always ends with some scientific rationale to explain the phenomenon. I see all the negative comments and I am shaking my head like come on, its a comic book. Star Trek has its purists and they are the reason why the franchise had some many issues. I mean I am almost embaraced to be a fan sometimes when I hear the comments. Its entertainment. Its not real life. I am adding it to my list at the shop. its going to be interesting.. I love Trek and I like where JJ is taking it. Berman almost killed it. It needs a shot in the arm. This is going to be interesting.
Security armor won’t be of much use when a phaser is set on disintegrate.
But perhaps the thing generates a personal deflector screen.
