Universal scraps Guillermo del Toro’s At The Mountains of Madness

Bad news for fans hoping to see Guillermo del Toro’s take on H.P. Lovecraft’s "At the Mountains of Madness". Universal Studios has opted not to greenlight the $150M 3D project. According to The New Yorker, the studio cited "concerns over the film’s budget and likely R rating". Del Toro withdrew from the negotiations this past Monday, "Madness has gone dark. The ‘R’ did us in.":

“Madness,” as he imagined it, would not be particularly gory, but he insisted that he needed the artistic freedom “to make it really, really uncomfortable and nasty.”

With all the work that has gone into the film for pre-production, del Toro may present it to another studio.

Diane Lane cast as Martha Kent in Superman movie + Manganiello talks about not landing lead role

Diane Lane will play Martha Kent in the new "Superman" movie from director Zack Snyder and producer Christopher Nolan, Warner Brothers has announced:

“This was a very important piece of casting for me because Martha Kent is the woman whose values helped shape the man we know as Superman. We are thrilled to have Diane in the role because she can convey the wisdom and the wonder of a woman whose son has powers beyond her imagination.”

Lane will star with Henry Cavill who was recently announced as the new Clark Kent/Superman. Speaking of Superman, "True Blood" star Joe Manganiello revealed to Access Hollywood that he never made it to the screen test phase for the part because they couldn’t work around his TV schedule [via Moviehole]:

"At the end of the day they wanted me to screen test and they actually asked for my measurements for the suit and everything … their shoot date switched and it would have taken up 11 weeks out of my True Blood schedule. … At the end of the day, we couldn’t get the schedule to work so that I could go off and screen test. So, regrettably, I never go to screen test, I never got to put the suit on."

The new "Superman" movie is scheduled to hit theaters in December 2012.

Ryan Reynolds explains CG Green Lantern suit

Ryan Reynolds defended the use of CG to create the "Green Lantern" suit, shooting down criticisms that have been leveled at the decision to go that route in the Martin Campbell-directed project [via Empire]:

"It has to be virtual rather than spandex…This is a suit from an alien planet. It’s not The Dark Knight – I don’t put the suit on and my voice drops several octaves…The suit is powered specifically on his will, his emotion, his creativity and his imagination. I love that. Everything Hal creates are images from his childhood…Or things fuelled specifically from his own mind."

"Green Lantern" is scheduled to hit conventional and 3D theaters on June 17, 2011.

From Ronon to Conan.

I have to say I’m a tad worried about the new Conan. Even the original 80s movie steered far enough from the source material – and this is supposed to be a remake of said movie?

What’s wrong with genuine R. E. Howard’ Conan stories? Muscular men, undressed women, mischievous wizards, ancient gods, bloody sacrifices. Man, I want to see “The Tower of the Elephant” or “Queen of the Black Coast” as a feature film!

Gawd, I hope they get the next Superman movie right! Screw Luthor or Zod, bring in Brainiac!

Knowing the Hollywood suits, they’ll f*ck it up, as usual!

WTF is up with the smurfs?

Way to go, Universal, about sh@t-canning del Toro’s Lovecraft film. How far can these studio heads go up their studio a$$e$?

Please god if there is another Tron sequel let there be more of the character ‘Tron’

@6. It was very odd how they had BB (and he looks fantastic) but, if I’m remembering correctly, he was never shown as Tron without that stupid helmet on. Did they blow the deaging budget on Bridges?

Yeah, Conan canon has so much material to draw from. Just adapt the original stories. Nuff said.

i have never known of a single movie i want to see less than smurfs. don’t get me wrong, the cartoon is great. but superimposing unrealistic cg cartoon characters onto images of the real world does not a movie make.

I agree james—however i still liked the tron sequel a lot n would luv to see more—i preordered the deluxe light up id disc blu ray package–so the inhumans movie is next huh–another klassic jack kirby/stan lee creation—those 1st 100 issues of the ff comic had so many creative concepts, stories still mining those nuggets–n again kirbys family probably gits nothin—how can deatly hollows part deux be so popular when its not even released yet—must be part 1 huh hehheh–

Probably sold me a ticket to Prometheus (or whatver Alien V is gonna be called)… and of course Superman. Also Holmes. Not so much into Conan, and not really into a teenie-fied Spiderman. Bit twice by bad Hulk movies. Not gonna go to a third one. (The second one played in the dentists’ office, and it still felt like I overpaid.) CGI is not a movie. CGI is a tool. K?

Stuff I’ve been wrong about: I predicted Hugo Waring’s career was over after Matrix. (Thought he’d never be able to appear in a film without someone thinking of Agent Smith.) WRONG, me.

Smurfs? Lord help me. I have a 3 year old. Maybe this storm will pass before he’s able to bend me around his finger and drag me to kiddie flicks. Help me, Pixar. You’re my only hope.

“Harry Potter and the Deatlhy Hallows Part 2” will get its world premiere on July 7, 2011 at London’s Leicester Square theaters… [THR]

… In related news, “Harry Potter and the Deatlhy Hallows Part 2” is now the highest grossing ‘Harry Potter’ movie in international markets. The film has grossed more than $657.24M in overseas markets. [BOM]

WOW! THAT’S A NEAT TRICK!

Dang no Mountains of Madness! I hope Del Torro shops it to another studeo. I would love to see that brought to the big screen.

“Roberto Downey Jr.” Made my day!!;)

Seen Battle L.A last night. Loved it. I highly recommend it. Looking forward to a of great movies. I’m most looking forward to Cowboys and Aliens and Harry Potter and The Green Lanteren.

BTW, the new Sherlock Holmes is called Game of Shadows, Game of Thrones is a whole different thing altogether

@2

I hope Conan is good. Paul, I’m with you. Why are we re-making Arnold’s version? I thought they were doing something real this time! I somehow feel no one’s gotten it right. Conan was stoic and didn’t have to snarl all the time. Has anyone in Hollywood read the R.H. Howard books? My 4 yr old was sitting on my lap as I watched the teaser trailer and asked why that he had breasts like a girl. That’s the least of my worries about it.

Quick thing. The last of the movie bites says director Simon Pegg instead of director Edgar Wright.

Super-8 has my vote.

Something new- looks like an actual story, with actual characters, with actual feeling and actual emotions… not some re-hashed, re-mashed, re-booted, re-done, re-worked, re-envisioned, re-imagined, re-engineered prequel, sequel bit of nonsense because studio execs are afraid to stray from the dead-certain buck. And sweet Lord, Star Wars in 3D? Beating. A. Dead. Horse.

I’ll give Dylan Dog a try as well. Routh got the short end of the Superman stick- a Superman movie without enough Superman. And nice to see ‘Jimmy’ along as a different kind of loyal sidekick!

Come on now, Disney, just announce the TRON: Legacy sequel already and get it over with, the suspense is KILLING me! NOT! But seriously, please announce a sequel, I loved the first TRON movie, and TRON: Legacy was great too! I’d be ecstatic if a another TRON movie was made. I did see a trailer for the TRON TV series (the animated one), but I have to say I’m not exactly impressed with the character animation. I’ve seen MUCH better (in the form of The Clone Wars on Cartoon network, which I watch regularly), and think that perhaps the character animation could have been done better (if not similar to The Clone Wars animation) than it already is. I’ll still try to watch the series anyway. Besides, its got one of my favorite actors in it, so I hear: Bruce Boxleitner (or am I wrong about this?).

Dylan Dog looks like great fun.

#19
agree completely

Christ on a bike, how many sequels, prequels, re-makes, reboots, re-imaginings… are there??? Can no-one do anything original these days?

At least Super-8 looks like being something original and promising. And I resile my previous whinge concerning Star Trek sequels and reboots (maybe)… oh, and Prometheus, which could be awesome.
Ah, yes, and the Flight of the Pheonix remake is remarkably good.

In fact I’m going to row back, all the way to the boat house….

“Conan The Barbarian” looks incredibly stupid. Pass.

“Source Code” might very well be this year’s “Inception”. Duncan Jones did a great job with “Moon”, so “Source Code” will be a must see for me.

“Cars 2” is also a must see. I enjoyed the first “Cars”. Thought that movie got unfairly criticized.

Still looking forward to “Thor”. 2012 is going to be awesome too, with “Star Trek 2”, “The Avengers”, and “The Dark Knight Rises”. Still thinking “The Amazing Spider-Man” is going to stink. Not sure about “Prometheus”. After the first two “Alien” movies, the whole franchise was run into the ground.

As for “Star Wars” in 3D, good luck to George Lucas trying to get suckers….errr…, I mean……ahem!… people to pay $20 to see Jar Jar Binks and Jake Lloyd up front in their faces!

The better approach would have just to have released the original trilogy. Let the kids see the classics the way it was meant to be seen….on the big screen, like in 1997, when I was just 16. It was awesome to finally see “Star Wars” on the silver screen.

#11

I had to go back and reread what was said and rewatch the clip but there was nothing said about a third Hulk movie, just the Hulk’s part in the Avengers.

I am looking forward to the Avengers, Super 8, Green Lantern, Captain America and even Thor even though I am not a big Thor fan. Of course I am looking forward to Superman but hey I even liked Superman Returns. I can understand some problems people had with it like Superman coming across as a stalker but some other problems I cannot understand such as the dead beat dad thing. You have know you have a kid before you are a dead beat dad and he did not know he even had a kid until the last of the movie.

Every close up shot of Hemsworth as Thor leaves me doubting the movie. How can I put this? He looks…..unintelligent. Someone with a room temperature IQ. A dim bulb. All muscle, no brain. It’s pretty sad when they make Thor the God of Thunder look stupid.

I recommend two films playing now for sci-fi fans. The Adjustment Bureau is based on a Phillip K. Dick short story. Starring Matt Damon and Emily Blunt, it”s a charming romance. The chemistry between Damon and Blunt is wonderful.

At times, I trust critics to help me decide what films to watch since I can’t watch them all. “Red Riding Hood” sounded terrible and the bad reviews will lead me to wait for it on cable. However, the critics were wrong when it comes to “Battle: Los Angeles.” Yes, I am against pound in your seats action but Batlle ‘s action makes sense since it’s about a platoon trapped behind alien controlled territory. I liked this movie. It was exciting. There’s one scene I defy you not to cry. And unlike G.I. Joe, the action felt real.

Speaking of G.I. J Joe, sorry to hear the lovely Rachel Nichols (Alias) won’t be in the sequel. She played Orion girl Gaila in Star Trek (2009). If it’s any consolation, G.I. Joe was awful. Hopefully she’ll find a better film to star in.

although, i’ll always wish JJ & Spielberg success (thanks to all they’ve contributed to the genre), from this trailer i’d have to presume that one needs to be eight years of age to be fascinated by Super 8.

of course, it’s so tough to glean useful information from Hollywood-promotional campaigns. so i hope it will be more impressive then it appears.

I know that from reading forums, I’ll be one of many Superman fans that WON’T be going to see next year’s film due to Christopher Nolan’s arrogant refusal to acknowledge the majority of fan polls that put Tom Welling a country mile ahead of anyone else as the actor they wanted to play Superman. Tom officially WILL be Superman at the end of Smallville. Hopefully Nolan’s refusal to cast Tom in the role will see his movie AND his reputation crash and burn.

Tom Welling is this generation’s Superman.

#28

I don’t know if it has been reported here, but Nolan hasn’t been attached to the Superman project since Dec:

http://screenrant.com/christoper-nolan-superman-batman-dark-knight-rises-mikee-90198/

It’s Snyder’s show now.

Super has a better costume than Spiderman. That’s just sad.

Another Sherlock Holmes?
dang this is the first I’ve heard about it

Also the Super 8 poster looks trippy. I like it.

& a whole movie on Puss in Boots is just wicked :)

does anyone else think that dwayne johnson would have been the obvious choice to play conan?

phantom menace back in theaters?? LOL! good god george lucas just can’t make enough money off of that franchise. i hope the turnout reflects the quality of those films since everyone knows how bad they are this time around.

Thor looks good in French. Hopefully it translates well. May be I’ll go deaf by the time Conan is released. Sure to be an improvement.

Thor looks wrong.

I’d be astonished if there’s ever a prequel to Blade Runner. Wouldn’t it basically be set before now?

It’ll be interesting what genre Simon Pegg & Nick Frost spoof with their third film together. Paul seems to rule out Sci Fi. Superheroes perhaps?

That poster for Dylan Dog makes me hurt even more over his losing the role in the next Superman movie.

Jason Momoa was way sexier in dreds and a beard in SG Atlantis. But I don’t suppose they’re making new Conan movies for us ladies anyway.

Hey, I’m gonna be one of those suckers in the seat at the 3-D Phantom Menace. I loved the cinematography the first time around, AND the Darth Maul battle sequences.

Conan will last ’bout five minutes in the theaters…

And I’ve predicted this before…The Avengers will end up like the recent proposed Justice League movie and will never see an inch of film. RDJ will probably pull out of it at the last minute like he’s getting ready to do for the third IronMan…IMO

Great article & updates, all usual. Thank you, Rosario!

Dear George Lucas,

I don’t care if it’s 5D on a holodeck, I’m not paying (or accepting) any amount of money to see the first and worst of your crummy sequels ever again.

Thanks,
Lukas

#28 How can Tom Welling be “this generation’s Superman” when not every Superman fan watches Smallville? I love Superman, but Smallville has always struck me as a Superman soap opera that has nothing to do with anything that happens in the comics ever. Clark in his teen years had nothing to do with Lois Lane, Lex Luthor, Braniac, Doomsday, or a host of other crap that show has tried to pull off.

Good to hear they are not remaking the original Blade Runner.

I would be very nervous about a remake of such an iconic film.

A sequel or prequel can stand or fall on its own–and be ignored if necessary.

Glad they are leaving the original to stand.

I can safely say George Lucas will never, ever see one more red penny from me for anything regarding Star Wars, especially ANOTHER re-release of the SAME films.

My hope of finally seeing a decent-looking ‘HULK’ face has been dashed. Again. I wanted a completely ‘frankenstein-ish’ transformation with short hair and a prominent brow. I don’t mind Mark Ruffalo taking over the Banner role…but I don’t want his features to end up the same as his alter ego’s. The HULK, he ‘aint!

That voiceover for the CONAN trailer is like a bad 70’s parody!

Also, can’t believe that Universal (the original ‘monster’ studio) have passed on the Del toro ‘Mountains of Madness’ Lovecraft project at this stage in it’s development… It was near the top of my most looked-forward to movies! :(

I sure hope that Del toro and Cameron can find a way to interest another studio. Boo to Universal for not wanting an ‘R’ rated version. It’s just not worth doing any other way than that!

#41 – Yes. Let them blow it with the sequel. The original shall stand unscathed.
That Spider-Man looks more like Ultraman.
Yay Cleveland! Something to look forward to while stuck here.

This isn’t the first time that every single upcoming project has looked awful, and it won’t be the last. You almost find yourself wishing that the funding would be pulled on this lot. Bad Reboot City.

Lucas has lost his mind!! There’s no way in hell I’d watch Phantom Menace again!!!! Bamboo shoots under the fingernails would be more enjoyable!! Pass.

I am SOOO tired of that “20% of our brain” myth being perpetuated by every movie ever. We use ALL of out brain!

Leave RoboCop alone!
