Karl Urban Ready For ‘Fun & Play’ On Star Trek Sequel at ‘End Of The Year’

Like his fellow Star Trek co-stars, Karl Urban doesn’t seem to know much about the 2012 sequel, but appears ready to get back to play, talking about how much fun he expects to have and his faith in the creative team in a new interview. Excerpts below.

Urban ready to ‘play’ for Star Trek sequel

While promoting his new movie Priest, Urban talked to NBC about his next big project:

I’m going to start working on a new Star Trek film towards the end of the year. You know – when JJ [Abrams] is ready. When he says, ‘Let’s come and play.’

However, Urban was not able to provide any details on the Star Trek sequel or insight on if Abrams will be returning as the director noting…

I guess nobody knows….I literally do not know anything. I haven’t ready any of the scripts – and I’m fine with that. Yeah, just tell me when and where and I’ll be there. I’m just really looking forward to getting back with the guys and having fun, because we had so much fun making the first one. And I have no doubt that Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and JJ will do their very best to make sure that they make the next one even better than the first.

Urban did give a shout out to his fellow Trek fans, saying:

The great thing that I love about Star Trek is that it has such a dedicated fan following. And it’s certainly wonderful to be a part of something that’s so well appreciated.

Right back at ya, Karl.

To catch Urban playing the vampire villain "Black Hat," see Priest, opening this weekend. Here is a clip with Karl.

Love having a Trek fan as one of the cast, and Urban’s ‘McCoy’ was incredible. Can’t wait to see him reprise it in the next film.

Hmmmmm … “such a dedicated fan following”, of course! … LOL …

Karl Urban makes us so excited always! … “September or November”… “at the end of the year”… ++LOL

:-) :-)

Urban’s The Real McCoy.

(Not a dig at the original Mc).

The casting for ST 2009 was brilliant.

Yay! Hopefully he’ll have a bigger role in the upcoming movie!! He was great!

Also. Am I the only one that’s excited to see Priest?

I hope it is earlier rather than later, but November is OK. It is still within the time frame for completion of the filming aspect of the sequel. Karl has October booked, as any good keen Kiwi rugby fan should. I want to see lots of pics of him at the Eden Stadium, Auckland, come October, watching the World Cup Rugby finals and so would many of his other fans as well. Go Karl!

#5 – Keachick- …

As much as I understand his “passion for rugby”… I prefer to see Karl Urban filming Trek 2 in October … sorry … but my fingers are crossed! LOL

:-) ;-)

#3,i love that! :) Karl Urban is awesome! He really filled the boots as McCoy in Trek09,and i hope they give him a bigger role in Trek12!!

Love Karl for the great job he did as Bones…

yes, more mccoy, please! …mccoy always gets short-changed–the healer is as important as the warrior (or should be), if not more so.

If I still had my copy of Karin Blair’s Meaning in Star Trek, I’d send it to Orci & company..as I recall it had a good explanation of the symbolism behind the triumvirate.

End of the year? I’m really beginning to doubt Star Trek 2.0 is going to be in theaters on it’s announced release date.

Amazing Spider-Man is almost wrapped. The Avengers has started shooting. And they both are supposed to arrive around the same time at ST ’12.

I hope they didn’t take all this time and then have to rush a movie to theaters.

More McCoy!!

More McCoy would be brilliant :):) Karl Urban did a brilliant job

Karl Urban is awsome. The only reason I’m watching priest is because he’s in it :)

@9 “End of the year?”

You are using selective quotation here. He said, “towards the end of the year, which could mean anytime from October on, not “the end of the year,” which would imply December.

Karl Urban really nailed it as McCoy. He channelled DeForrest Kelley perfectly! I’d like to see more of him as part of the absolutely essential Kirk-Spock-McCoy trio.

The next movie’s posters should have Kirk (Chris Pine), Spock (Zachary Quinto) and Dr. McCoy (Urban) featured prominently. I know that Uhura was included with Kirk and Spock last time, and that’s fine, but McCoy has to be there as well. He represents the passionate side of Kirk, while Spock represents the logic and intellect.

I like how Shatner defends how he never gives the Vulcan salute, which he may or may not be able to do — “My character doesn’t do it.” These other guys, from both casts, should keep that in mind.

#14,Red Dead Ryan,Amen to that!! I would leave right now at 6:15 a.m. and go buy a poster like that!!

J.J. Abrams, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman need to surpass Star Trek (2009) and rectify the mistakes that they made because as much as it was a tremendous film, I was still privately disappointed because it could have easily have been so much better. The Orion Syndicate as the villains, larger all-star cast as well as many cameos including by William Shatner and Lady Gaga, more planets, larger space battles with more starships, bringing back and give more screentime to Chris Hemsworth, Jennifer Morrison, Rachel Nichols, Winona Ryder and Diora Baird, Kirk having better fighting skills and several human love interests played by Hollywood’s most beautiful young actresses, no cut scenes and the Jerry Goldsmith theme music from the Star Trek Insurrection end credits as well as the album version of ‘Where My Heart Will Take Me’ used at the end.

The best thing about the new Trek movies is the casting. Urban is by far the best. He really is Deforest Kelley without doing a parody.

Karl was great as McCoy. Just in case Mr. Orci happens by the thread, let me say again just this little thing….remember Bones isn’t ALWAYS cranky, he had that southern gentleman thing going at times, and could always have a quiet supportive little talk with Kirk when he felt the Captain needed it.
I’m sure Karl has the range to pull all that off quite well, let’s see a little more depth to our favorite space doctor.

I really hoping we hear something at Comic Con about the movie. 68 days from today….there has to be.

#17. Yeesh, you want to direct it don’t you?

Hands-down, the best rendition of any of the original cast.

He nailed it.

Can’t wait to see Urban reprise Mr. Kelley’s role.

I swear, I could almost feel the approval from beyond. :)

Karl is one of those actors, I really root for having a good long fruitful career. Great actor and a great guy. :)

He is literally the only one who could play McCoy’s part after DeForest Kelley. Bravo, Urban!

Karl was perfect for Bones- I hope to see his career flourish, and it seems it is!

Bob Orci, we need more McCoy! I don’t care if it hurts the teenage girl demographic if you have to feature less of the Spock-Uhura romance. I usually agree with McCoy’s big heart even if he’s not right at the moment. McCoy always gets the best lines or sets up the best lines. Check out some of them below.

From Star Trek: The Motion Picture

“Why is any object we don’t understand always called “a thing”?”
(In one line, he captures the idea of tolerance.)

Wrath of Khan:

McCoy: Where are we going?
Kirk: Where they went.
McCoy: Suppose they went *nowhere*?
Kirk: Then this will be your big chance to get away from it all.

The Search for Spock:

“That green-blooded son of a bitch! It’s his revenge for all the arguments he lost.”

And Karl Urban was fantastic as McCoy. How about a good old Kirk-Spock-McCoy away mission? Yeah, bring on the troika.

26. Agreed! But, actually, the teenage girl demographic (and female demographic in general) LOVES Karl Urban’s McCoy. believe me, I have heard it from the horse’s mouth. :)

as awesome as Urban’s, Mccoy was (dont get me wrong it was phenomenal, i could just tast the mint-julip when he talked) Quinto’s, Spock, was 2.1345 light years ahead it. Quinto WAS Nimoy, it was almost like Leonard mind-melded that performance into zachary’s head. !!!!!! It was spooky how spock-y Quinto’s spock was !!!!! a fascinating visual re-incarnation, as well

was that dedicated or divided? :P nah by and large the fan-base is dedicated – 45 years on and through the highs and the lows we’re all still here discussing Star Trek’s latest incarnation and thats gotta be worth something!

Saw Priest in 3D today. I really wasn’t expecting much but was pleasantly surprised. There’s some good action and some nice visuals, the 3D gives a good sense of depth most of the time and Karl Urban is actually quite good despite not having too much screen time; with his western themed garb and vampire canines he’s definitely one of the more interesting cinematic characters to come along recently.

He’s definitely a versatile actor who can play good or bad guys (even in the same movie) and I’m looking forward to seeing him reprise McCoy again, just give him a proper sickbay to work in and appropriate billing alongside Pine and Quinto. Kirk, Spock and McCoy were the classic TOS triumverate, not Kirk, Spock and Uhura.

I was quoting Karl himself. He mentioned filming in either September or November and I gave some background as to why he may not be there in October. It all depends on how much he does in the sequel as to how long he needs to be in the studio. Like everyone here, I am hoping to see a bit more of Urban/McCoy than previously, or at the very least, as much as what we saw in Trek 09.

Paramount hopes to have the (bulk of?) the filming done by January 2012, because they want Chris Pine available to do the next Jack Ryan movie early next year. Just have to wait and see what happens.

To Paramount and Bad Robot – the Star Trek Sequel is the PRIORITY!!!
(Allow “my captain” some genuine down time. Be good to him!)

Zachary Quinto has a very appealing personality, very good actor…
I am waiting in anticipation for Star trek 2!:)
