Today is the birthday of Star Trek: Enterprise’s Dr. Phlox. John Billingsley turns 51 today and TrekMovie would like to wish him a big happy birthday. We also check in to see what John has been up to recently.

On Star Trek: Enterprise John Billingsley’s Denobulan Dr. Phlox brought both an interesting alien perspective on humanity along with a good dose of comic relief, as can be seen from this clip.
Billingsley stays busy
Before joining Enterprise, Billingsley had a successful career as a character actor and he has continued to do since the crew of the NX-01 went off the air in 2005. He has done many guest roles, including recurring or regular roles on Prison Break, The Nine, 24, and True Blood. He appeared for the second time in the CW 90210 just this week. He has also appeared in a number of feature films, including the big disaster movie 2012. Billingsley will also appear in three upcoming indie movies: Sironia, Trade of Innocents, and Red Line.

I loved the optimism of Phlox. The menagerie of weird creatures he kept in sickbay. Always came up unconvential treatments, from leeches to worms. Could so easily have been ENT’s Neelix but he was so much more. All the best, John.

One of my favorite doctors, no doubt you inspired Dr, Leonard McCoy, my other favorite healer. With either one I know I would be in good hands,. which reminds me, doctor, I have this pain in my left elbow….
As an Original Series fan, I never watched much of the later incarnations – I found the stories dull and the acting flat.
While I mostly felt the same about Enterprise as a show, I thought Billingsley’s Dr. Phlox was just great, and entirely because of Bilingsley. I get so tired of modern actors with no sense of drama just sleepwalking their way through lines. Billingsley has a great “stage” presence and ability to hold your attention. Too bad he was the Dr on a sinking ship, while Crusher, Troi, Pulaski and so many TNG characters were able to coast boringly along for so many years.

I’ve seen dozens of things with John Billingsley in and I can just say this. He is a truly brilliant actor! From the weird and wonderful Doctor Phlox through the creepy and sadistic killer on Cold Case to an alcohollic guy on New Scrubs. This man is a true treasure.

Billingsly performed the role brilliantly & it was very well written unlike previous characters of this type such as Neelix or Quark who were protrayed as comic to the point of ineptitude.
He was brilliant & highly skilled, yet weird enough to demonstarte the challenges of alien cultures working together in close quarters.

I agree about Neelix. But Quark was a well-rounded character who had his serious moments. He was much more than just comic fodder.
The worlds needs more people like Doctor Phlox.
