Video Game Set In Star Trek Movie Universe Coming In 2012

Star Trek is finally returning to the world of video games. This morning Paramount announced they are developing a new game for PC, Xbox 360® and PlayStation®3, based on the 2009 Star Trek movie. The story for the game is being developed in collaboration with Star Trek writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. Details below.

"Star Trek" video game coming in 2012

This morning Paramount Digital Entertainment announced they developing a new video game titled "Star Trek" for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC in 2012. The game, due in 2012, promises an original story and "unprecedented co-op experience," with players taking on the roles of Kirk and Spock.

The new Star Trek game features an original stand alone story which "continues the adventure" of the 2009 Star Trek movie. According tot he release the game is "filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock must work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy." The story is being developed by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczyk, in collaboration with the writer/producers of the new Star Trek films, Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman.

President of Paramount Digital Entertainment Tom Lesinski states:

Star Trek challenges the boundaries of co-op gameplay with a galactic adventure that gamers and fans have never experienced. Working closely with the Star Trek filmmaking team throughout development, the game is sure to deliver AAA production values, a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise. This will be the definitive Star Trek gaming experience.

The game is under development by acclaimed Ontario-based developers Digital Extremes (Bioshock 2, Unreal Tournament, Dark Sector, The Darkness II), working closely with Bad Robot, K/O Paper Products and Damon Lindelof and published by Paramount Digital Entertainment through a license with CBS Consumer Products.

Star Trek will be available in stores 2012.

First (Full) Star Trek Video Game Since 2007

This newly announced game is actually not the first video game based on the JJ Abrams Star Trek movie – that would be Star Trek DAC which came out in 2009. However, that game was a low-cost downloadable simple shoot em up style game with no actual storyline. The last full-fledged video game for Star Trek was Star Trek: Conquest in 2007 for Wii and PS2. That game came from Star Trek’s brief stint with Bethesda Softworks, who released four other Star Trek games for various platforms in 2006, but none of which really took off. Before that (not counting TDK’s one-off PS2/XBox game Star Trek Shattered Universe in 2004) you have to go back to 2003 with Star Trek: Elite Force II (Windows and Mac), which ended Activision’s 4-year relationship with Star Trek, producing a number of games.

Star Trek’s return to the world of Star Trek gaming is very exciting news. TrekMovie will be providing regular updates on the “Star Trek” video game. Paramount is promising to show off the game at E3 next week and TrekMovie will be there so look for a report next Thursday or Friday.

BRING IT!!!!!!!!!!!

:))

Co-Op Star Trek, playing as Kirk & Spock. Count me in!

I hope they’ll use the original actors’ voices in it.

@Sunfell: If by ‘original’ you mean Shatner and Nimoy, then you sir, are a troll.

GREAT! :-) :-)

It’d be great to finally get a good Trek game. Really no excuse for one not to exist.

Based on Star Trek XI? Eh, don’t care…

I want an action-RPG set on DS9, after season 7, with the original actors and writers, and the game to be like KOTOR/Mass Effect.

This is great!

@Steve There were a few, like the Elite Force games, The Fallen, or Bridge Commander…

I would most love to have this Game. Can’t wait to get it.

new Star Trek Videogame = YES

The way I understand it it’s just Kirk/Spock, so no Bones, Scotty and Co?

TAKE MY MONEY I WANT IT!

zperk is a troll

“filled with action-packed combat as Kirk and Spock must work together to stop a legendary enemy race bent on conquering the galaxy.”

Sigh. Why is this franchise even called “Star Trek” anymore, when there’s no actual trekking going on?

ZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZ

@12 I second that!

Money-grab. Surprised it didn’t come out much sooner.

– “The story is being developed by BAFTA award winner and God of War writer, Marianne Krawczy”

Hmm. God of War. Wasn’t that about an angry demi-god who slaughters countless lives, murders his wife and daughter and treats women like mini-games? With a resume like that, he fits JJ’s Star Trek perfectly! I cannot wait to hear what non-role Uhura will play. At least Elite Force let me play a female Munro.

– “a wide variety of gameplay and all the action you would expect from the hit franchise.”

And by “the hit franchise”, we mean Halo with Spock wielding a Covenant Plasma RIfle, and Mass Effect with Kirk using the overblown “cover” mechanic….. while on the set of Danny Boyle’s Sunshine.

@ 17

Paramount is slow as usual.

Sooooo….Perhaps a little time has elapsed, (talking about canon-time), for these characters between ST09 and ST12….

for as many times as i’ve complained here that the alt timeline would make for a great next gen video game for the consoles and not just for the pc, this announcement just made my day! mass effect 3 and trek in 2012? my 360 will constantly be on!

Yes!!! Now I can use my PS3 for more than “Rock Band” and Blu-Ray. I’m so getting this!

I’m actually looking forward to this game. Hopefully, if this one sells well, then we can expect more quality games from Paramount Digital Entertainment and the Star Trek license can finally get out of that mantra of having too few quality video games. Hopefully there will be space combat as well as on-foot action as well. And, don’t forget the voices. Hopefully, they can persuade Zachary Quinto and Chris Pine (and maybe the whole cast) to do the voices of their characters from the movie. This game also feel like this is a tie-in to the next movie, which is due to come out next summer. So, if the movie does well and the game does well, we can expect 2012 to be a huge year for Star Trek.

I’ll buy five copies just to support this thing!!

Maybe they’ll include ship battles as well. Anyways I am looking forward to this, but I am hesitant. I remember when it was announced back in 2005 that new Star Trek games were being released, I was giddy. When the games DID get released, I was pretty upset. I’m hoping they do this one right.

Wes I second that :):)

It’s about time! I’m getting bored with STO and the Bethesda releases were abysmal (Legacy was ok, would’ve made a better movie). I wish Activision had more Trek releases. Those games were awesome. Anyway, I hope the rest of the crew at least gets featured if Kirk and Spock are playable. Can’t wait! Gonna pre-order! What a great way to kick off the TrekXII season.

Hmmm, could be cool, but we’ll see.

And what the heck, why does Spock have a Halo Plasma Rifle in the pic? haha

I’m surprised there wasn’t a major game tied to the release of the 2009 movie. This ought to help stir up the franchise for non-trekkies who haven’t gotten into things yet.

uh, if b’orci is involved,
and it comes out in 2012,
and tie-ins are everything,
they wouldn’t be stupid enough to tip the plot hat of the next film on this, would they?
bob?

i mean, why are kurtzman and orci involved? is that normal for gaming? have film scribes work on a game?

Hope it has plenty of lens flare!

Love the whole idea! Sign me up!

Meh, this looks like It could be fun if it is done right, then again, any game is fun when done right (Unless you happen to be based on a certain Spielberg movie about a certain Extra Terrestrial haha). But I think I will wait for the guys working on Star Trek: Excalibur to release their project. It looks to be much better, and it’s free. And, with all the great mods available for games such as Bridge Commander and the Armada series, I have enough gaming entertainment to hold me over. Though if the reviews of this are good, I may find in my heart to pick it up.

Looks cool. Been a long time coming since we got to play a video game as Kirk and Spock. Can’t wait! Coop games are lot of fun anyways.

@14 – you hit the nail on the head. The vast majority of Star Trek games are simply shoot-em-ups, and have very little to do with the exploration and diplomacy that was such a huge part of the television series.

Here’s for holding out for Lego Star Trek: The Video Game.

#1,Aurore,that goes for both of us! And #32,Jim,if J.J. had anything to do with it,I’m sure it will!! :)

I would love a Lego Star Trek game based on all 11 movies etc :):)

Finger crossed for a good game, Star Trek deserves one. I hope the cast will provide the voices too.

I’d love for Bioware to get ahold of the Trek license and do to Trek what they did for Star Wars. Knights of the Old Republic was one of the best products to feature the name Star Wars (I will go so far as to say that the first game was better then the prequel trilogy all together). I think they could make a killer Star Trek RPG!

I’ll be all over this when it comes out, just hope it’s better than the usual movie tie in crap.

I have PS3 and would love a star trek game. However i’ll only get it if its got good reviews and is resonably priced! I shall not be paying £30+ for any game! I would love to see a STAR TREK LEGO GAME as well – I’d get that!

When can we pre-order?

I’m gonna go right ahead and surmise that since this gameprobably takes place post-JJ-verse movie, that the sequel doesn’t start immediately after the end of the last one. Even though this game has nothing to do with the flick currently being written. “Enter the Matrix” was not a great game but it was neat how they weaved the continuity of it into the films. Let’s hope this does the same.

Good. Me likey.

28, thanks for noticing that. I was thinking the same xact thing. Someone must have pulled an Elaine and thought they “invented it” when they didn’t.

“all the action you would expect from the hit franchise”

You must mean the JJ-verse franchise, Mr. Lesinski, – a franchise that consists of a single movie hitherto. The gameplay and action I expect from the Star Trek franchise was *perfectly* embodied in the games Star Trek: 25th Anniversary, Judgement Rights and Final Unity, thank you very much. I take it you won’t be resurrecting the ‘Vulcan Glory’ project any time soon.

*I meant ‘Vulcan Fury’

A lot of hate here for a game that hasn’t been released yet and has one image thus far. Haters gonna hate!

I will look forward to this one!
