Paramount Promotes “Star Trek 2” At Licensing Expo – But Just Working Title

As we reported recently Paramount and CBS are in New York this week at the Licensing Expo to cut deals on their various properties, including the upcoming Star Trek sequel. A new promotional image for Paramount is being shown at the Licensing Expo which touts "Star Trek 2," but that doesn’t mean Paramount has already settled on the name.

"Star Trek 2" at Licensing Expo – just a working title

Here is a set of promo title treatments being shown by Paramount at the licensing expo (via MovieWeb).

One thing that stands out is "Star Trek 2" for the Star Trek sequel. However, TrekMovie has confirmed with Paramount that this is just a working title. As we have been reporting, there still isn’t a final script approved for the film or a confirmed director, so it is still too early for the film to have an official title. For now "Star Trek 2" is just industry shorthand. In the past both JJ Abrams and Roberto Orci have stated that in the end "Star Trek 2" wouldn’t be an option because there already is a "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan."

As far back as June 2009, Abrams acknowledged that his second Star Trek film would not have a number, saying at a press conference in Mexico

JJ Abrams: [The sequel title] would have a subtitle instead of a number

Here is what Bob Orci wrote on the TrekMovie comments in April of this year:

BobOrci: Damon [Lindelof] might have a title, but we’re not sure.

Can’t just be STAR TREK: INSERT FANCY WORD HERE.

Can’t be STAR TREK 2, or II, or TOO

Very tricky.

Any ideas?

Trek fans will just have to get used to "Star Trek 2" being used to discuss the film until a title is agreed upon.

But what to call it?

Of course I have been arguing that the final title for "Star Trek 2" does not even have to have "Star Trek" in it. Like with all the James Bond films and the last and next Batman films, you can ensure people know it is a Star Trek film via the associated branding (logo, etc). And you can use some kind of evocative title, like say "Prime Directive." As Bob Orci indicated, coming up with a title for the film is just one of the things they are dealing with for the sequel.

Focus on getting the script finished first, worry about a title latter.
whether it says it on screen or not, to me this is Star Trek XII.
I know that it wont be officially called that, but to me its Star Trek XII

Star Trek something something still on track for 2012, sweet

Do what they did with The Dark Knight….. make a great film without Star Trek in the title.

Star Trek: TWO

I’m still smarting that they didn’t call the Jellyfish the USS SPOCK’S TIME SHIP.

Star Trek – Mudds Women against Orion Slave Girls

Agree with #3

The Dark Captain Kirk

#3 The Dark Knight — this is another name for Batman. Another example is ‘The Caped Cruisador’. It’s be much harder to pull off something like this, trekwise… any suggestions? I honestly can’t think of anything people will instantly recognise as the trek, unless they call it ‘The Klingons Return’ or something

Star Trek: Year One

I prefer they keep the words Star Trek in the title, nothing to be ashamed of, it worked in the 2009 release. Star Trek Klingons Strike or something would be just fine.

Star Trek Rising

I think another poster mentioned, Star Trek: New Worlds, alluding to the fact that the Vulcans have a new home and the crew explores new worlds.

“Star Trek Returns” would be perfect! :-)

Or, even better, “The Star Trek Strikes Back”!

The most important words on the title will be STAR TREK. Everything else is icing.

also this is the new alternate reality reboot part 2

Star Trek Wars

#16

I agree!

Dont call it Star Trek 2 and DON’T drop Star Trek from the title.

Continue with the TNG movie style. Star Trek: Title

Star Trek 12. So Very Tired…

I think I like

Star Trek Returns and Star Trek New Worlds the most.

I think Star Trek 2 is cool, no need to come up with a weird subtitle which a lot of people aren’t gonna be happy with. It’s the sequel to the start of a whole new series, so it makes sense to me. Plus, Star Trek 2 is not exactly the same as Star Trek II :)

how about use the same title as the last one:

Star Trek

I don’t think that it matters that “This isn’t your father’s Star Trek.” There already is a Star Trek II. To me, Star Trek (something something) makes the most sense.

There are two Trek monikers that have more recognition than “Star Trek” which could be used for the title:

1 – Enterprise Unfortunately, this has been used, and badly.
2 – James T. Kirk More non-trekkers remember that name more than the show’s name itself.

Honorable Mention:
3 – James R. Kirk It IS an alternate universe after all :)

People will still call it Star Trek 2 even after it’s given a subtitle. It’s faster to say and more convenient to type. Just like people refer to the TNG movies by their number.

star trek – in the eye of the mirror

Star Trek: Something Something Something Dark Side

STAR TREK:
WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE

Star Trek : TOO – Just deal with it fanbois –

;-)

Star Trek: Fractions

or

Star Trek: Fraction

To Explore Strange, New Worlds…

-or-

To Boldly Go…

-or-

Where No One Has Gone Before…

Use a dash instead of a colon.

The problem with a title is that it should encompass the story, but Star Trek should be epic, and finding a title worthy is almost impossible. Less is more.

So, I say…

Star Trek 2

Many of the potential viewers weren’t even alive in 1982, and those of us who were aren’t going to mistake the two.

I don’t have a problem with Star Trek 2. The Wrath of Khan was just that…Star Trek 2: the Wrath of Khan. STar trek 2, without anything else, stands alone just fine and immediately defines itself as a sequel to Star Trek.

Truth be told…I’m not at all convinced that The Wrath of Khan should have ever been called Star Trek 2, as it is hardly a sequel to TMP.

35. In the first prints, it wasn’t. It was Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. As I only saw it once in the theater, I can’t confirm whether the number was added during the theatrical run or when it went to home video, but at the press screening in Miami, no II.

Star Trek: Another Generation.
Star Trek: Operation Vulcanization.

STAR TREK: The Vulcans Strike Back

Hmmmmm…. Sounds familiar, but I can’t quite place it….

They’re remaking Footloose?
Man oh man… talk about running out of ideas…

I’m down with Star Trek: Something Something. There really isn’t anything other than “Enterprise” which is brand recognizable. Quotes, species, the names Kirk and Spock, but otherwise there isn’t an alternate name (like Dark Knight, etc.) that works for the whole kit and caboodle. Besides, this is another installment of a franchise that they’re proud of. It’s what they’re selling. They should definitely keep the name.

Besides…the last time they took Trek out of the title, they put it back in later because they decided it was a mistake.

However, no to Star Trek: Something Something Dark Side. ;)

Star Trek Ascension

(perfect for Klingon theme)

“Star Trek II: The Rise Of The Klingons”

“The Klingon Empire Strikes Back”

It worked for James Cameron, it can work for you:

STAR TREKS

39 – The Footloose remake has been on the docket for a while…Zac Efron was booked for it and then declined. I thought they killed the project, but apparently not.

I’m thinking no “Star Trek” at all… people know the brand so well, we know the typeface we know the imagery, I’m convinced the mainstream audience recognises it because its so strong you don’t need the prefix “Star Trek” and instead go with something ‘of the franchise’.

“Warp Speed”

“Boldly Go”

Night of the Living Trekkies.

…or simply “Kirk & Spock”, you could animate the title in the trailer the first and last letters of S tar tre K… fade and swap places revealing the K and S.

Star Trekkin.

Star Trek. The search for more money.
No. Space Balls would have taken that one.
Star Trek. Lens Flares.
No. Already done.

How about this:

STAR TREK
The Romulans Strike Back
