George Takei To Be Inducted Into California Hall of Fame July 26, 2011

by TrekMovie.com Staff , Filed under: Celebrity, TOS , trackback

Star Trek’s original Sulu George Takei is headed to the hall of fame – the California Hall of Fame to be specific. Takei will join luminaries such as James Cameron, Levi Strauss and Betty White. The actor has also just started rehearsals for his new play Allegiance.

Takei headed to California Hall of Fame

News of Takei being inducted into the California Hall of Fame was revealed by the man himself today via Twitter:

The California Hall of Fame is part of the Museum of California in Sacramento. Last year’s inductees included director James Cameron, former governor Edmund "Pat" Brown, and Facebook’s Mark Zuckerberg.

Congrats to George!

Takei in NYC for Allegiance

While George is being honored in California, the actor is actually now in New York. He has just started rehearsals for his new play Allegiance. More details at the official facebook page.

Sheesh, as a CA taxpayer, as broke as our state is, I hope I am not funding this?

2. Buzz Cagney - July 26, 2011

As a British tax payer I also hope you aren’t funding this, MJ!
Beside’s, there must be more famous people in CA?! It does rather seem to be scraping the bottom of the barrel.
Can I say scraping the bottom of the barrel in a thread about Takei? It sounds just a little like a double entendre!

3. Harry Ballz - July 26, 2011

YAWN!

4. chrisfawkes.com - July 26, 2011

Good for him.

5. Keachick (rose pinenut) - July 27, 2011

Oh dear.

6. SPOCKBOY - July 27, 2011

George is awesome. Good for him.

7. Basement Blogger - July 27, 2011

Congratulations George.

8. captain_neill - July 27, 2011

Congratulations to geroge on this honour

9. Silvereyes - July 27, 2011

Isn’t it typical of the man though, that he would announce the news himself? Sounds as desperate as always. Shame.

10. rogue_alice - July 27, 2011

Oh everybody, give him a break. At that age I’d be touting everything I accomplished. Geez, it’s not like he has the ego of Shatner.

11. Anthony Thompson - July 27, 2011

Congrats George! You are a truly nice and classy guy; this is well-deserved.

12. chrisfawkes.com - July 27, 2011

Some know Shatner has a big ego because they read it in a magazine somewhere.

13. Joe No - July 27, 2011

Wow, completely undeserved.

14. dep1701 - July 27, 2011

Sick of reading all the hate spewed at this man who has been nothing but supportive, giving and gracious to the fans over the decades. Okay, yes, he’s been on an anti-Shatner rant for a while, and yes it gets tiresome, but have the fans forgotten the joy ALL the actors who participated in this show brought to all of us ? Let’s also remember that George was also very active in Califronia politics, so I’d say his award IS well deserved.

I think some of the folks here need to take their own advice to Takei and stop spewing the bile. You’d think that many of the people here were related to Shatner the way they jump to his defense anytime one of the supporting players has anything bad to say about him. I like Shatner fine, but I don’t feel the need to deend his honor or attack other people when they don’t care for him.

BTW: add to the list of people who have publicly stated they didn’t enjoy working with the Shat;
Yvonne Craig,
Gary Lockwood,
William Windom,
Paul Winfield,
Barry Morse ( and believe me, he was far more vocal about it than George Takei ever was ).

Perhaps some of you haters would like to go over to their websites, blogs, or in a couple of cases, graves, and piss on them too for expressing their opinions in public when asked.

BTW congrats George.

15. Buzz Cagney - July 27, 2011

I don’t give a rats ass what George Tacky thinks of Shat- I know thats mostly just jealousy anyway. The reason I don’t much care for him is that he has a massively inflated opinion of his place in Trek. Nothing more, nothing less.
And he can’t act for toffee.

16. Red Dead Ryan - July 27, 2011

George Takei wouldn’t even had a career in Hollywood if it wasn’t for William Shatner, whose performance as Kirk really drove the show. Takei was lucky to ride on his coattails, and should be very grateful.

And outside of Trek, what exactly has Takei done to deserve a spot in the California Hall Of Fame?

Also, very few people outside of Trek fandom really know or actually care about who he is.

I don’t know much about the former governor, but I do know that both Mark Zuckerberg and James Cameron have accomplished a lot more than Takei has.

17. The Starfleet Veteran - July 27, 2011

George Takei has more talent and has done more in his career than any of you, so y’all Takei haters need to shut your mouths.

18. The Starfleet Veteran - July 27, 2011

PS #14 – That was great.

19. Red Dead Ryan - July 27, 2011

#17.

Look, just because someone starred as a SECONDARY character on a hit tv show (”Star Trek”) shouldn’t mean they should qualify for any type of Hall of Fame. His body of work is just too small, especially in comparison to William Shatner and even Leonard Nimoy.

20. Desstruxion - July 27, 2011

Shatner made Star Trek what it is. Everyone else was just along for the ride. They should all be grateful that they got to share a stage with him. His ego is deserved.

21. I'm Dead Jim - July 27, 2011

George Takei has his flaws but doesn’t deserve the hate being spewed here. Disgusting.

Live and let live!

Congrats, Mr. Takei!

22. CmdrR - July 27, 2011

Nicely done, sir. Congratulations.

23. DS9 IN PRIME TIME - July 27, 2011

Sounds great if I ever make it to that museum ill stop in and take a look.

24. Shatoupee - July 27, 2011

Congrats to George Takei. An excellent, well-deserved selection. Ignore the oddball haters, George!

25. MJ - July 27, 2011

@24. Why is it that someone who just happens to think that George is not one of the greatest Californian’s ever a hater?

I live in California, and I can tell you this — when people here talk of greatness in this state, Takei is not in the discussion.

26. MJ - July 27, 2011

@17 “George Takei has more talent and has done more in his career than any of you, so y’all Takei haters need to shut your mouths.”

I live in CA. No, you are not going to silence me. He is not considered a great Californian here in the public discussion — deal with it!

27. Phil - July 27, 2011

Another stupid waste of taxpayers dollars. Why the hell does CA need a hall of fame?

28. Phil - July 27, 2011

So, without looking it up, does anyone know where the CA hall of shame…excuse me, fame is? Who’s in it, beside the three celeb’s listed on this thread?

Does anyone care?

29. BringBackKirkPrime - July 27, 2011

Way to go George! Well deserved. Also, for your fans, they are finally working on completing the Star Trek fan film you did back in the 1980s with Stan Woo directing and co starring James Shigeta. So cool to see you play Sulu again, and about 25 years in the past. Here’s a link with info:

30. MJ - July 27, 2011

Actually, as big a star and as important a person that Takei now is, I would not be surprised if George decided to nominate the State of California to be inducted to the “George Takei Hall of Fame!”

31. Keachick (rose pinenut) - July 28, 2011

#30 LOL

32. Shatoupee - July 30, 2011

A tad of homophobia or racism here, methinks. George has done much for Japanese-Americans and gays in this country.

33. Sebastian S. - July 30, 2011

Way to go, George!

He’s done SO MUCH for LA’s Nissei community. He’s donated a lot of money (as well as his ST:6 uniform) to the Nissei museum. He’s also been a strong activist in local politics (not just gay rights, but also mass transit; he was a very vocal proponent for the LA subway system).

I think it’s great, and deserved. May he live long and prosper! ;-)

34. red dead ryan - July 30, 2011

#32.

WHAT?! NO WAY! Nobody’s being racist or homophobic here. We’re just stating why we disagree with Takei’s induction into the California Hall Of Fame!

Yah well the way some of you are acting it sounds like you hate george-i think his talent, career and love of us fans, his many political pro people positions, his courage for coming out of the closet, his reflections regarding the japanese american camps, his caring and yes his acting talent all make him worthy of being inducted into the cal. hall of fame-lately he was excellent in a recurring role in heroes, was funny in a recent big bang theory, great in commercials–hes had quite a career–at the 40th ann. vegas con five years ago we met him, and grace lee whitney n walter koenig at a breakfast, only george let us take his pix with us, and laughed n told us a funny story about being capt sulu after we asked-he was funny and very giving–others barely even said hi-later at thebpix taking session he told us in his very gregarious voice i remember you we had breakfast together hello again—koenig said nothin to us,nichellewas gracious n polite n shatner also said nothin to us in the 10 seconds we had posing with a pix for him–so george was genuinely caring n warm while some other stars not so much–we will always like george takei -congrats to him he deserves whatever accolades he gets and i dont think it is desperate sounding at all for him to let his fans know about it–

37. MJ - August 1, 2011

@36. I put him in the same category as Shatner, except that Takei is not as talented an actor. Both are legends in their own minds, and there personalities and hubris really irritate me. And again, ask people across California for lists of great Californians throughout history, and Takei is not going to make the Top 500.
