JJ Abrams: ‘Very Close’ To Announcing Star Trek Sequel News + ‘Open’ To Star Trek TV Series

TrekMovie is back to our regular programming and we start off with an update from Trek’s head honcho himself JJ Abrams who has a brief update on the Star Trek sequel (it’s close) and even possible Trek on TV (he’s open to it). Find out more below.

Abrams: Very close to talking concretely about Star Trek sequel + open to Trek TV

Speaking to NBC, Star Trek sequel producer (and possible director) JJ Abrams gave a brief update on progress:

I’m excited. We’re working hard. We’re very close and I hope to have something to talk about concretely soon. I do feel like if ‘Trek’ happens as we hope that it will, it will be a fun return to that group of people, because it’s an amazing group.

Abrams also talked about the idea of being involved in a possible Star Trek TV series saying:

"I don’t know,” he muses, appearing to give the notion thought for the very first time. “It’s never really come up, frankly, but depending on what that would sort of be and how it would be done I’d be open to the idea of it. Right now we’re just sort of focusing on making a movie that’s worth people’s time."

For now JJ Abrams Bad Robot productions is contracted with Warner Brothers to develop TV series (including the upcoming Persons of Interest on CBS and Alcatraz on FOX) so it is unclear if he would be able to also work with CBS to develop any possible Trek on TV. In the past other members of Trek’s "supreme court" have talked about Trek as well. Damon Lindelof recently said he wouldn’t be interested because while he enjoys working in pre-developed franchises for film (like Star Trek and Alien), he is only interested in doing original work for television. However, the writing/producing team of Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman (who have a TV development deal with FOX) have told TrekMovie they would be interested in creating and executive producing a possible Star Trek live-action TV series, however they wouldn’t be interested in being show-runners on a day to day basis. And of course Orci and Kurtzman have already started to look into the possibility of doing a Star Trek animated series set in the new movie universe (although that is only in the earliest of discussions at this point).

New Star Trek TV show?

There have been some reports in the media about a possible new Star Trek TV series in development. TrekMovie will have an update on this proposed project, but bear in mind that there are no reports of discussions about such a project at CBS, who are the ultimate deciders on when (or if) Star Trek returns to TV. TrekMovie will have more on this in a future update so stay tuned.

First for once?

How many times has this been reported?

Oh yeah, looking forward to that update Anthony. I’ve been reporting it on a few sites myself. I recommend a very cautious approach since there’s always going to be such a slim chance any television project really takes off but it’s certainly worth reading about!

From the Terran Empire News Service this is a Special Report.

J.J Abrams is close to deciding on weather or not he will Direct the next Star Trek Movie. More as it unfolds.

Your Kidding me. Star Trek on TV has never come up. Really!!!!
No way. It has had to come up. I know someone here at Trek Movie had to have brought up that we crazy fans would love to have a new Trek TV Series. Lol.

Welcome back Anthony. Hope you had a great vacation on Risa.

Aww man. I was hoping all this delay in updates to trekmovie.com was because Anthony was compiling information regarding the Star Trek: The Next Generation Remastered BluRay set so the announcement would be a trekmovie.com exclusive.

I’m still crossing my fingers!

How about a TREK anthology where old casts/actors can return for brief periods of time + new crew too!?!

P-L-E-A-S-E put Star Trek back on TV. Maybe put it on Showtime if a network won’t pick it up

Made the NY Post this morning

Let me get this….

” I do feel like if ‘Trek’ happens as we hope that it will,….”

** IF **??

We’ve gone from “script in December,” to “70-page outline in March,” to “no firm script in July,” to absolutely nothing in August…..

I’m not sure I WANT that next announcement.

Sorry, but my patience has just about worn out.

We need a new tv series and / or anime !!

#13 – Like I said before, if it’s ever anime, Oshii has to direct. :)

@ 13. Q2

Not “or” but “and!” I need a new live action star trek tv series badly, an animated series alone would not satisfy me the same. I have not seen much anime but I love the two Appleseed movies and Vexile.

Star Trek: Titan I would like to not prequal there a campaign thats running at the moment on facebook called Star Trek: Titan Tv Series show them your support 2,168 have already.

This is just so dorky. We know that JJ Abrams and co. are “very close”. They have been for a while now.

Just have to laugh in case I start crying…

RDR – are you getting this?…:)

Hey JJ check out the Copy righted work of Theodore Moser great idea, changes have been made it is even better than what was copy righted back in 2001!

Promise me you’ll lose the stupid lens flares and get a real engineering set and I will LET you make a new star trek series. Otherwise forget it. Same thing goes for the movie.

Weather it’s a cartoon, a movie, TV show or mini series. I would like some quality writing. It’d be nice to see more of the new universe. I doubt we’d see Chris Pine and everyone cross into TV. We’ll see what happens.

I still think Paramount doesn’t want to oversaturate Trek like they did the last time and we wont see a new Trek TV series until after the new movie series is done. I could be wrong on that. Then Paramount will see how much money it makes them and if that would justify a new Trek TV series going foward. A new Trek TV series today or a few years from now would cost probably $2 to $3 Million an episode? Unless it was all done with green screen? Or would green screen still be expensive?

These headlines need a little work…

Has JJ spoken in endless ‘ifs’ for previous projects? Is it just his cautious style, or is something going on here?

I can’t picture Titan ever getting picked up, but I’ve been wrong before. I’m a little surprised that people are interested in a Riker/Troi series. But, then again, I was never a fan of Riker. Frakes seems like a decent guy, but Riker – don’t love him. Haven’t both characters kind of run their course?

Me, I like Trek in movie form, as long as it’s good. Unless they can blow me away with a brilliant adult series, I’m not too interested. Heck, about 1/2 of the time I was disappointed after watching a new TNG episode, it was a little better with DS9 (which was nearly always entertaining, even when silly) and by Voyager I was disappointed pretty much all the time (and my standards as to what was decent Trek had fallen considerably by then). By Voyager and Enterprise (at least early Enterprise) so many of the stories felt completely unnecessary, like there was no reason to tell them other than the need to fill a timeslot and keep the franchise going.

Wow! He’s even a little bit closer to maybe telling us something sometime soon!

Getting “close” to an announcement on the new Trek movie is like getting “close” to an orgasm. It’s just not all that great in the end.

You must have faith that the universe will unfold as it should…

Bob, please make a tv live action show set in the new Star Trek timeline! What do you say??

Any new TV series would probably have to be on HBO/Movietime or at the very least STARZ because of finances. In all probability it won’t be the movie cast and characters, too expensive and I don’t think any of them want to be tied down in a series. No matter, half the so-called fans will hate it half of the other half won’t watch it and the rest will criticize it to death causing it to be cancelled and them they will all clamor for movies. Trekkie – just round them up and shoot them!

I say if Paramount decides to do another Trek TV series set it on the Enterprise F or G. Have a Great Grandson of Kirk’s commanding it.

I don’t see how a proposed show would land on anything other than a CBS-related network. That includes Showtime and no other premium networks, doesn’t it?

@25. “You must have faith that the universe will unfold as it should…”

You do realize that quote was from a scene where Spock didn’t give Valeris the proper reassurance she was seeking.

#25 Of course, you are right. However, the words “should”, “would” and “could” all have slightly different meanings and connotations.

#20 I have read other people saying that actors like Chris Pine would not do television. Why not? He has already appeared as a guest actor on shows like ER, CSI:Miami and the Guardian in the past. After all, it is all (paid) work and all three mediums – TV, movies and live theatre – can stretch an actor’s capabilities, given the right script and direction.

#24 Michael – I assume that you are a guy. I have always got the impression that the problem most guys have is that it does not happen often enough!

25

George Michael couldn’t have said it better. :)

25: I’m trying…..but to paraphrase some hair band or another “give me something to believe in.”

#30 Keachick — Yes I am a guy. But I don’t entirely understand what you said. You say that guys don’t have enough of the O? Or that they give way too much of the almost O?

We definitely don’t have enough of the Star Trek.

I’m ever so slowly getting past caring.

#25 or is that how you think it should unfold? I’m honestly losing interest Mr O. You really do have to get a wiggle on.

Good God!! I’ve heard ‘very close’ alot it seems like!! Ah me,I’ll wait for ya JJ;even till the cows comes home! And #25,Bob,I have the faith,it just comes and goes sometimes! I can’t wait for Aurora to see this, talk about being excied!! :)

Let’s get this straight: Anthony has been gone for almost a week, and the first article he puts up is one we’ve seen a dozen previous times this year?

And J.J Abrams just likes to say a lot of words without telling us anything.
It’s been several interviews about nothing.

He can create his own sitcom in the vein of “Seinfeld” and call it “Abrams” with characters based on Bob, Alex and Damon!

#17.

If they’ve been “very close” for some time now, how come the movie has been delayed? Why has filming been pushed back to January of next year at the earliest?

#25.

Sometimes the universe unfolds later than expected, or not at all……

Just sayin’!

But I’ll keep the faith going till summer 2013!

Like I said elsewhere, this is all starting to sound like the noises from the Brian Singer camp about that “Superman Returns” sequel…

Then the studio decided to go another way.

I still think the best bet for a Star Trek TV series is a “Tales of Star Fleet” anthology – get BIG actors and GOOD writers to do episodes with different crews on different ships in different time periods, even different universes now… where ANYTHING can happen.

A rotating set of standard uniforms and ship sets would keep it fairly cost effective and name actors who would never do a series would LOVE to be a Captain for an episode.

But instead, if we do get a TV series, here is my prediction: They will again go FURTHER into the future, disconnecting even more from the audience, and getting tangled up in the 20+ years of continuity from every series since TOS, which NO ONE outside of fandom cares about.

Interesting that Mr. Orci compares this particular movie project to the “universe,” which took… billions of years to create….

…unfolding very, very slowly….like an under-cooked omelette.

Just get on with it………

eggs is eggs

You can’t make an omelette without breaking some eggs!

#r41 or some nice cheese.

This new proposed TV show that’s going around the net stinks! I hope someone can pull it off.

A new series would be nice. I don’t care where they set it..well okay, I kinda do, but I’d still just like to see some Trek back on TV.

So looking forward to see what they do in the next movie :D

#42.

Just not blue cheese! It’ll stink and make us all feel blue. And not in an Andorian way either!

#12

Yeah I noticed that to. Kind of an odd choice of words IMO. But could be reading more into that than there is.

Oh… He has said would be “soon” before… and we’re still waiting …………………… waiting…………………………………….LOL

:-) :-)

Oh my God!! BOB ORCI Has Said something. Yes!!! The Universe is Indeed GOOD!!!!!.

Don’t Worry. We Love you Bob Orci.

#25- boborci … sounds so profound ……………………………………..still waiting!

Hi …. great to see you here again!
