The video game publisher Gameforge is eliminating 100 jobs and restructuring their company, which has affected several of their projects and could result in the cancellation of the Star Trek: Infinite Space video game. Details over the jump.
Gameforge says unless a co-publisher can be found for Star Trek: Infinite Space, they may be forced to stop development on it:
"Through a more efficient organizational structure, we can optimize our use of resources and great potential for further growth increase. This will strengthen our long term position in the dynamic market for online games."

You do realize that if a company can’t make money, they go out of business and everybody loses their jobs right? You also realize online games sometimes take years to develop before the company makes any money? You also realize that if a company is tight on money, they have to cut costs to survive, right?
Companies are in business to make money and if they can’t do that, they don’t stay in business wrong. In general, companies don’t like to fire people. That’s why when an economy is doing really well, there tends to be a lot of waste in big companies– they can afford to not fire inefficient employees because they are making great profits. But when economies are bad, and companies make less money, they have to let go of people to keep those who stay working.
In general, unless the company is unionized or has a seniority based employment system– hard working employees keep their jobs. Performance based. If someone is let go, and is worth their salt, they will be able to find a new job easier than those who are not. Those who don’t work hard, don’t deserve to be felt sorry for.
That sounds good, until you notice that it’s always the staff and line workers who get the shaft, and not the management. It’s like how all jobs seem to get offshored to places with lower wages, except for management jobs, even though managers could be hired for cheaper in, say, Japan or Europe. Funny how that works.
One factor in the lack of market value for new Trek products and whatever is being dragged down by the locked in time Kirk & Spock trend that’s taken over the franchise.
When you focus on just revolving around the original cast, you limit and stagnate your boundries.
Such as Paramount has decided to take that route. Star Trek will never grow as long as we are reliving Kirk and Kahn.

With STO going free-to-play, it kinda makes sense to cancel this game. Why have two F2P Star Trek games going at the same time?

*Claps* totally predictable. Logic states a two games in a market decidely with only the room for 1, will ensure the lesser quality game will die, for the needs of the other.
This is aggravating. Nothing will ever beat the disappointment of cancelling “The Secret of Vulcan Fury”, but this is also disappointing.
Ah, the good ol’ Activision days when there were many Trek games out at once…then again, there were also 2 television series and a movie or two to go along with it…

Told ya not to put your hopes in Gameforge. It’s the very same company that bought a MMORPG Saga of Ryzom only to run it into the ground several months later. Didn’t expect anything good from them.

PS: Just because Montalban and Del Toro are both hispanic doesn’t mean they’ll be playing the same INDIAN character.
On topic: I would be VERY disappointed if this title was canceled. There isn’t much out there right now as far as TREK games go. I hope nothing happens to the one being developed by Digital Extremes.

Deep Space Nine gets the shaft again! I was looking forward to this. Yeah, free-to-play means it wasn’t going to be a masterpiece, but anything set in the Deep Space Nine universe is at least worth a gander.

The verbiage in the official statement is meandering and vague. And if everybody is laying off, who will be left to buy? So what can really increase? Not growth, not in the end…
