Sheldon’s Spock disappointment in Big Bang 100th episode

In The Big Bang Theory’s 100th episode "The Recombination Hypothesis" the main focus is how Leonard and Penny may get back together. However Sheldon has his own subplot, focusing on how his order for some Star Trek merchandise has gone wrong. According to a tipster, Sheldon orders a Star Trek Spock life-size cutout, but when it arrives he is not happy. Sheldon was expecting it to be a cutout of the Leonard Nimoy Spock, but he gets Zachary Quinto’s Spock instead. Apparently Sheldon isn’t a fan, exclaiming "Zachary Quinto!? Live long, and suck it!" Sheldon’s disappointment factors into a later scene, when he tries to accept the new Spock.

The 100th episode of The Big Bang Theory airs Thursday, Jan. 19 (8:00 – 8:31 PM, ET/PT) on CBS.

1. Christopher Roberts - January 13, 2012

Cool, first!

A situation made funnier by a guest appearance by the real deal perhaps?

2. Disinvited - January 13, 2012

All I can think to ask is “If you have the man’s DNA, what need has one with a cardboard cutout?

3. JOel1245 - January 13, 2012

Touche Disinvited. Touche! lol

4. Balok - January 13, 2012

Ah yeah, like all episodes of BBT, I’m sure this one will also underwhelm.

5. Dee - lvs moon' surface - January 13, 2012

OMG… I WANT to see it… ZACHARY QUINTO?… Okay Sheldon, accept it now!!!!…. :-) :-)

6. trekgirl20 - January 13, 2012

I need that cutout! :D and that’s going to be hilarious to watch on BBT next week :P

7. DavidJ - January 13, 2012

Sad to say, but I used to own a ton of those cutouts.

8. AJ - January 13, 2012

That sounds extremely funny.

9. Craiger - January 13, 2012

They should have Quinto guest star on that episode. Imagine Sheldon meeting with him and arguing about Spock. LOL.

10. Gordon Ramsey's knife - January 13, 2012

Oh this will be great…that show is the best reason to watch TV

11. Celeste - January 13, 2012

Hey, if Shelly doesnt want it, I’ll take it!

12. Pilotfred - January 13, 2012

WOw 100 already
I love this prgrame and it still feels
Be so cool to have both spocks in the episode

13. Mike;_B - January 13, 2012

#2,…… That would be correct if he had Quinto’s DNA, which he does not. He has Leonard Nimoy’s!

14. Trekboi - January 13, 2012

Love the trek Jokes, Nimoy said in a talk that they had talked about a role but there was a money issue, probably they didn’t offer enough for him to come out of retirement (again)

15. Charla - January 13, 2012

I have that cut out! :D

16. Oddness - January 13, 2012

Be funny if ZQ Spock visits him in a vision (nap) or dream sequence… all fully suited and Spock makeup etc.
I’m sure whatever they do will be fun…its a great show

17. scifib5st - January 13, 2012

Oh Shelly, you did not read the order?
Perhaps Nimoy is the buildlings owner? Or he could take it to the comic book store and trade it for two Datas!

18. Phil - January 13, 2012

ZQ should be the delivery guy…..

19. Ted C - January 13, 2012

Oh here I thought for the 100th episode they were going to finally make it funny. I guess I was wrong.

20. Ted C - January 13, 2012

@ #8 It does?

21. Spock/Uhura Fan - January 13, 2012

All I can say is if he doesn’t want new Spock, give him to me. I’ll take him!!! :-) He’s like Campbell’s soup: Mmm mmm good. :-D

22. Lt. BAILEY - January 13, 2012

This is a great show, sadly we got into it a little late. But thanks to my wonderful wife, she got me 4 seasons of TBBT on DVD for Christmas…I am a very lucky man indeed.

These guys are a hoot to watch and honestly, we all know people who are like them. Some of us were even like them growing as kids.

23. Spock/Uhura Fan - January 13, 2012

@#11 Celeste

Oh, hey, I see you have the same idea. :-)

24. I'm Dead Jim! - January 13, 2012

Oh here I thought for the 100th episode they were going to run out of hilarious Star Trek references. I guess I was wrong.

Looking forward to this episode!

25. Trekker5 - January 13, 2012

I love ZQ’s Spock!! Accept it Sheldon:This. Is. The. New. Spock! :) This will be a great episode, can’t wait to see what happens!! :)

26. Dr. Cheis - January 13, 2012

I’d be annoyed too.

27. Lieutenant - January 13, 2012

Woah! A Zachary Quinto Spock cutout? Where can I get one?! :)

28. P Technobabble - January 13, 2012

Can’t get enough of this show. No matter how many times I see it, I laugh.

29. Let Them Eat Plomeek Soup - January 13, 2012

How did I think that “Star Trek Subplot” meant that they would have ST12 spoilers in TBBT?

I think too much.

Sheldon, accept it. Accept it now.

30. I am not Herbert - January 13, 2012

“Zachary Quinto!?”

“Live long, and suck it!”

31. NeonGlo - January 13, 2012

I got emailed on this article because I often bring that cutout to our Star Trek club meetings. What, BBT guys didn’t watch Heroes? I can’t believe it. Anyway, I still want one of SHELDON in Spock gear (as he appeared in an early episode) to complete my collection.

32. NeonGlo - January 13, 2012

And all you guys who are being snide about ZQ as Spock; check out – 3000 fangirls (yes, they know he’s gay) disagree with you!

33. Hat Rick - January 14, 2012

Sheldon kinda looks like he could be Spock’s younger half-human brother, if Spock had one. Sort of has Spockian mannerisms, too.

Just noticed.

34. ripleyaeryn - January 14, 2012

I hope there’ll be more Trek guests on Big Bang Theory like Scott Bakula! Loved Wil Wheaton, George Takei and Brent Spiner on it!

35. CmdrR - January 14, 2012

I smile everytime I pass a storage company in my neighborhood that has the lifesize Kirk and Spock “guarding” people’s junk. I think the TOS phaser would scare away crooks more than the p’choo p’choo whirley-nozzle toy they use in the JJverse.

36. Barb - January 14, 2012

The Big Bang Theory needs to visit the set of a Star Trek Fan Film.

37. - January 14, 2012

I have a friend who put all of his Star Trek figurines and collectables on ebay the day after seeing the movie The 40 Year Old Virgin.

38. Sunfell - January 14, 2012

I would LOVE to see Zach and/or Leonard pop in to that show. Zach finally learned about “Rock, Paper, Lizard, Scissors, Spock” from a Russian fan on his tour for “Margin Call”. He said that he’s going to have to watch that show.

And.. I need to get the Quinto-Spock cutout.

39. Brett Campbell - January 14, 2012

36 – Did you mean that the other way around?

40. Plum - January 14, 2012

Remember, Sheldon thinks ‘ST:V The Final Frontier’ was the best of the series! I know, I know… ;p

41. kirk's girdle - January 14, 2012

Sheldon also trashed ST:TMP and of course, Leonard and Sheldon both hated Nemesis, even though they had excellent seats.

42. WillH85 - January 14, 2012

So glad my girlfriend got me into this show. Even greater is watching it and getting all of the Trekkie and nerd jokes that she doesn’t even catch.

43. Disinvited - January 14, 2012

#13. Re: “…That would be correct if he had Quinto’s DNA,…”

Non sequitur.

“Sheldon was expecting it to be a cutout of the Leonard Nimoy Spock…” – Anthony Pascale

44. Odkin - January 14, 2012

The best part about Cardboard Cutout Quinto is that it is embued with the same level of acting charisma as the real article. It’s like he’s in the room with you!

45. Odkin - January 14, 2012

@40 – No, Sheldon never said ST:V was the best.

He simply said ST:V had specific faults in acting, writing and directing, while TMP was a failure on EVERY level.

A pretty accurate assessment, actually.

However, I think he said ST IV was better than TWOK, which is of course, blasphemy.

46. Disinvited - January 14, 2012

“Sheldon was expecting it to be a cutout of the Leonard Nimoy Spock…”

47. Aussie Ian - January 14, 2012

Maybe you guys are all missing the obvious. On Big Bang Theory, the “A” story often has a direct tie-in to the “B” story. Running along side Sheldon’s dismay is the fact that Leonard needs help to get his relationship back on board with Penny …………….

Who better to advise him on how to get “The ladies” than the greatest lover of the Galaxy Captain James T Kirk?

My money is on a guest appearance by William Shatner, who unlike Mr Nimoy will NEVER retire, to turn up and make a comment on which actor he truly thinks of as Spock and to tell Leonard to grow a pair and go get Penny back!

No offense to Mr Quinto, but as amazing as his Spock performance was in JJ’s film, it would truly have to be an original cast member rocking up for something as big as their 100th episode.

48. Ms. Spock - January 14, 2012

I want one of these!

49. NCM - January 14, 2012

I have what Sheldon thought he ordered.

50. SquashAndApples - January 14, 2012

Sorry, not even the temptation of Star Trek subplot will get me to watch TBBT. I’m sure Trekmovie will come through with a summary to spare me the aggravation. :)

51. Marja M - January 15, 2012

@ #38 – And Quinto WON, that smarty-pants, because he kept throwing “Rock”! I laughed so hard.

I love BBT and will definitely watch the episode — unlike some of you I think the show is hilarious and I love every nerdish reference, especially those concerning Trek in all its forms.

I LOVE ZACHARY QUINTO’s Spock! [And I’ve loved Leonard Nimoy’s Spock in TOS for 40+ years, so there.]

Quinto and Nimoy rock

52. snoopytrek - January 15, 2012

ok..i used to be dvr’d…well, back then it was…every episode off every local or cable station reruns of Frasier, then Wil and Grace, catching up with them not until bout the third seasons or so then having to wait for syndication to play catch up..same with TBBT..didnt watch until the third season hit CBS. Then by the fourth, the series hit syndication from the local peachtree channel here to TBS. Now, im blowing up the DVR again and on demand!

“look, Leonard, Sheldon’s hugging me!”
“Hoooward, is that youuuu?” “Yes, ma! Who else would it be?”
“Slum Dog Millionaire..that was about me.”
“That’s my spot.”
” I’m not insane! My mother had me tested! ”
“You’re not done with her, are you?” “Our babies will be smart and beautiful.” “Not to mention imaginary.”
“Hello, besty.” getting carried away…

What the hell, one more…

53. captain_neill - January 16, 2012

Do the guys on Big Bang Theory not like the Abrams movie or just Sheldon?

Nimoy is still Spock to me as well but I enjoy Quinto’s performance in the role. But guess I am one who will always love the originals even though I can appreciate the new actors.

Although at times looking back on Trek XI I think Zoe Saldana did turn Uhura into a bit of a bitch in some places.

54. Keachick - rose pinenut - January 16, 2012

I don’t think that Zoe turned Uhura into a bitch. I think it is more to do with style and way of delivering lines. Zoe Saldana comes from a different background from Nichelle Nichols, I think, and of course, a different generation, as did all the new cast. Unfortunately, Zoe comes off as being a little rougher around the edges – her voice is naturally sharper in tone than Nichelle’s softer, mellower but also more “rounded out” (if that’s the right word) voice. I am not sure if Zoe Saldana was perhaps the best actress to play the part of Lt Uhura, but she’s OK.

Hopefully, she might be able to tone back the sharpness and with the right script be more like the original Lt Uhura. That doesn’t mean she can’t be Spock’s friend and lover.

55. KevinA Melbourne Australia - January 17, 2012

Live long and suck it!

That works on so many levels. LOL!

56. Starfleet's Finest - January 19, 2012
