Sci-Fi TV Friday: New Genre Shows + Doctor Who, Once Upon a Time, Walking Dead, Lost, Jericho + more

It’s been a long hiatus, but Sci-Fi TV is back with a look at the latest in sci-fi and genre television, including Doctor Who and first looks at Arrow, Wizards vs. Aliens and J.J. Abrams’ new show Revolution. All that plus much more, including news on a possible Jericho return and the latest images and video previews.

GENRE TV NEWS – 2012/2013 Network TV Season: New, Renewed & Canceled

Here’s a quick breakdown of what genre TV shows have been renewed, canceled and what’s new for the upcoming 2012/2013 Broadcast TV season. Please note that this year’s network upfronts take place starting next week. Having said that, here’s the current "early" look at what’s in store for the 2012/2013 TV season:

NBC

Returning: NBC’s "Grimm" has performed pretty well on Friday night’s and has been picked up for a second season.

Ending: The network canceled freshman drama "Awake", while "Chuck" went off the air earlier this year after its fifth and final season.

New: At the moment, we know that NBC currently has two new genre shows planned for next season; the Jekyll & Hyde-like medical drama "Do No Harm" and the J.J. Abrams-produced drama "Revolution":

Cast:  Alana De La Garza; Michael Esper; Mousa Kraish; Phylicia Rashad; Ruta Gedmintas; Steven Pasquale

Drama about a brilliant neurosurgeon who wrestles with his dangerous alter-ego that threatens to wreak havoc on his personal and professional life.

Cast: Giancarlo Esposito; Andrea Roth; Anna Lise Phillips; Billy Burke; David Lyons; Graham Rogers; J.D. Pardo; Maria Howell; Tim Guinee; Tracy Spiradakos; Zak Orth

Our entire way of life depends on electricity. So what would happen if it just stopped working? Well, one day, like a switch turned off, the world is suddenly thrust back into the dark ages. Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible. And without any modern technology, who can tell us why? Now, 15 years later, life is back to what it once was long before the industrial revolution: families living in quiet cul-de-sacs, and when the sun goes down lanterns and candles are lit. Life is slower and sweeter. Or is it? On the fringes of small farming communities, danger lurks. And a young woman’s life is dramatically changed when a local militia arrives and kills her father, who mysteriously – and unbeknownst to her – had something to do with the blackout. This brutal encounter sets her and two unlikely companions off on a daring coming-of-age journey to find answers about the past in the hopes of reclaiming the future. From director Jon Favreau ("Iron Man," "Iron Man 2") and the fertile imaginations of J.J. Abrams ("Lost," "Person of Interest") and Eric Kripke ("Supernatural"), comes a surprising "what if" action-adventure series, where an unlikely hero will lead the world out of the dark. Literally. The series stars Billy Burke ("The Twilight Saga"), Tracy Spiridakos ("Being Human"), Anna Lise Phillips ("Terra Nova"), Zak Orth ("Rome + Juliet), Graham Rogers ("Memphis Beat"), J.D. Pardo ("A Cinderella Story"), Giancarlo Esposito ("Breaking Bad"), David Lyons ("The Cape"), Maria Howell ("The Blind Side"), Tim Guinee ("Iron Man") and Andrea Roth ("Rescue Me"). Kripke, Abrams, Favreau and Bryan Burk ("Lost," "Star Trek") serve as executive producers. "Revolution" is produced by Bonanza Productions Inc. in association with Bad Robot Productions, Kripke Enterprises and Warner Bros. Television. The pilot was directed by Favreau.

FOX

Returning: FOX picked up "Fringe" earlier this week for its fifth and final season (a 13-episode pickup) and more recently announced that the Kiefer Sutherland drama "Touch" has been renewed for a second season.

Ending: FOX canceled both of their high-profile projects "Alcatraz" and "Terra Nova" after lower than expected ratings.

New: At the moment, it doesn’t look like FOX has any new genre programming on their slate for the next season at the moment

ABC

Returning: ABC renewed the hit Sunday night fairy tale drama "Once Upon a Time" for a second season. The show is this TV season’s top-rated freshman drama (more about "Once Upon a Time" below).

Ending: ABC canceled "The River" after just one season on the air.

New: At the moment, it looks like ABC has at least one new genre project on their 2012/2013 schedule, "666 Park Avenue".

  • "666 Park Avenue"

Cast: Vanessa Williams; Terry O’Quinn; Rachael Taylor; Dave Annable; Erik Palladino; Helena Mattsson; Mercedes Masohn; Robert Buckley; Samantha Jade Logan

If you could make one wish, what would it be? And what would you do to get it? At 666 Park Avenue, all of your dreams and burning desires can come true: wealth, sex, love, power, even revenge. But just be careful what you wish for, because the price you pay… could be your soul. Welcome to The Drake, the premiere apartment building on Manhattan’s Upper East Side. Owned by the mysterious Gavin Doran (Terry O’Quinn – Lost) and his sexy wife Olivia (Vanessa Williams – Desperate Housewives), The Drake is home to dozens of residents who are unaware they’re living in the dark embrace of supernatural forces. They think their dreams are all coming true, only to find they’ve been lured into making, what feels like, a deal with the Devil. When a young Mid-western couple – Jane Van Veen (Rachael Taylor – Charlie’s Angels, Grey’s Anatomy) and Henry Martin (Dave Annable – Brothers & Sisters) – is hired to manage The Drake, they soon discover that evil, obsession, and manipulation has a home. Allow yourself to be seduced by 666 PARK AVENUE, and unravel the mysteries of this devilish new drama from Alloy Entertainment (Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries, Pretty Little Liars) and executive producers David Wilcox (Fringe, Life on Mars), Leslie Morgenstein (Gossip Girl, The Vampire Diaries) and Gina Girolamo (The Secret Circle, The Lying Game).

CBS

Returning: CBS renewed the J.J. Abrams-produced drama "Person of Interest" for a second season

New: At the moment, it doesn’t look like CBS has any new genre projects currently planned for next season.

The CW

Returning: The CW has renewed three of its genre shows: "Supernatural" (Season eight); "The Vampire Diaries" (Season four) and "Nikita" (season three).

Ending: Meanwhile, "The Secret Circle" and "Ringer" have both been canceled after just one season on the air.

New: It looks like The CW currently has two genre projects planned for next season:"Arrow" and "Beauty and the Beast".

  • "Arrow"

Cast: Stephen Amell; Colin Donnell; Colin Salmon; David Ramsey; Jamey Sheridan; Katie Cassidy; Paul Blackthorne; Susanna Thompson; Willa Holland

After a violent shipwreck, billionaire playboy Oliver Queen was missing and presumed dead for five years before being discovered alive on a remote island in the Pacific. When he returns home to Starling City, his devoted mother Moira, much-beloved sister Thea, and best friend Tommy welcome him home, but they sense Oliver has been changed by his ordeal on the island. While Oliver hides the truth about the man he’s become, he desperately wants to make amends for the actions he took as the boy he was. Most particularly, he seeks reconciliation with his former girlfriend, Laurel Lance. As Oliver reconnects with those closest to him, he secretly creates the persona of Arrow – a vigilante – to right the wrongs of his family, fight the ills of society, and restore Starling City to its former glory. By day, Oliver plays the role of a wealthy, carefree and careless philanderer he used to be – flanked by his devoted chauffeur/bodyguard, John Diggle – while carefully concealing the secret identity he turns to under cover of darkness. However, Laurel’s father, Detective Quentin Lance, is determined to arrest the vigilante operating in his city. Meanwhile, Oliver’s own mother, Moira, knows much more about the deadly shipwreck than she has let on – and is more ruthless than he could ever imagine.

  • "Beauty and the Beast"

Cast: Kristin Kreuk; Brian White; Nicole Gale Anderson; Max Brown; Jay Ryan, Nina Lisandrello; Austin Basis.

Detective Catherine Chandler is a smart, no-nonsense homicide detective. When she was a teenager, Catherine witnessed the murder of her mother at the hands of two gunmen. Catherine would have been killed too, but someone – or something – saved her. No one has ever believed her, but she knows it wasn’t an animal that attacked the assassins…it was human. Years have passed, and Catherine is a strong, confident, capable police officer, working alongside her equally talented partner, Tess. While investigating a murder, Catherine discovers a clue that leads her to a handsome doctor named Vincent Keller, who was reportedly killed by enemy fire while serving in Afghanistan in 2002. Catherine learns that Vincent is actually still alive and that it was he who saved her many years before. For mysterious reasons that have forced him to live outside of traditional society, Vincent has been in hiding for the past 10 years to guard his secret – when he is enraged, he becomes a terrifying beast, unable to control his super-strength and heightened senses. Catherine agrees to protect his identity in return for any insight he may have into her mother’s murder. Thus begins a complex relationship between Catherine and Vincent, who are powerfully drawn to each other yet understand that their connection is extremely dangerous for both of them.

Check back next week for a more detailed look at what’s new next season, including on the cable networks.

Damon Lindelof thinks Lost could return one day

Although it’s been off the air since 2010, but "Lost" co-creator (and current "Star Trek" writer/produce) Damon Lindelof still thinks ABC could bring the show back one day…he just won’t be involved with it [via Variety]:

"It’s been two years (since the series wrapped) and we told the story we wanted to tell…I do feel like the world has not seen the end of ‘Lost,’ but I’m not going to have any involvement," he said.

Lindelof added that he would be ok if someone else decided to revisit the series.

Report: Netflix considering bringing back Jericho

Speaking of shows returning, could "Jericho" be brought back from the dead yet again? According to TVGuide, Netflix has approached CBS about reviving the short-lived drama which went off the air in 2008:

Repeats of Jericho remain popular on Netflix’s on-demand service, even four years after the show’s cancellation. Insiders say Netflix execs would love to emulate the revival of Fox’s Arrested Development, which is expected to return on Netflix with new episodes in 2013, seven years after the show ended its run.

Talks are still in preliminary stages, and insiders warn that it’s too soon to celebrate, as there are still many hurdles to overcome before a deal is struck. Making it financially viable for both Netflix and CBS may be the biggest challenge of them all.

Interestingly, TV Guide notes that CBS boss Leslie Moonves may have hinted at a return back in February when while at an investor conference revealed the network was in discussions with Netflix about possibly doing a show together…now it’s believed he was in fact referring to "Jericho".

Jennifer Morrison teases Once Upon a Time season finale + previews

Top-rated drama "Once Upon a Time" concludes its first season on Sunday with the episode "A Land Without Magic" and producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz teased the "game-changing" finale in an interview with EW. Here are some excerpts:

KITSIS: What we’re trying to do with some of this fairy tale stuff in the finale is kind of twofold, which is fill in a few of the blanks that we set up in the pilot this year, but also hopefully surprise you with something new about that story that you didn’t know.

HOROWITZ: If last week really focused on Snow White’s side of the story, this week will focus a lot on Prince Charming’s side of the story.

KITSIS: We don’t want to anticipate what the audience is going to think or how they’re going to take it, but we can speak to how we as writers have approached it and what it’s done for us, and for us, it is a big game-changing kind of thing in terms of how we approach the show.

Check out the rest of the interview here. Star Jennifer Morrison also teased the "game-changing" finale, telling TV Guide: It’s so massive and so game-changing…I mean that in the best way. I read the season finale and went, ‘Oh my God! What is going to happen?!’," Morrison said, while adding that the storytelling and characters will remain the same, but that "thematically, there is going to be such a drastic shift that it will be a whole new adventure". "A Land Without Magic" airs Sunday night at 8PM ET on ABC.

The Walking Dead begins production on season 3

"The Walking Dead" began production on its third season this past Monday, and comic creator and executive producer Robert Kirkman sat down with AMC to discuss the upcoming season. Here are some excerpts from their Q&A:

Q: With the evil Governor in the picture, does that mean the humans are the bigger threat this season?

A: The plan was always to evolve naturally into a place where the zombies essentially become a manageable threat. You know the rules. You know how to deal with them. To a certain extent they become something to not really be scared of unless you mess up. Humans, however, do not follow any rules and will always do something that surprises you and are capable of doing things far worse than trying to eat you…We’re definitely going to be seeing a lot of horrible things.

Q: This season has got so many exciting story lines…

A: When you think about The Walking Dead comic series, you think about oh, the stuff they with did the Governor, the stuff they did with the prison and Woodbury and Michonne. And that’s really a lot of the stuff that people remember the story for and that’s stuff we haven’t even gotten to in the TV show yet. So as much as people love the show, and as high as the ratings are, and as cool as the show is, I feel like we haven’t even gotten to the good stuff yet. This season is absolutely going to blow people away.

After 6-episode and 13-episode first and second seasons, respectively, "The Walking Dead’s" upcoming third season will run 16 episodes. For his part, Kirkman is just fine with that: "I think the more the better, and I think it’s a lot of fun. We are going to get to tell bigger stories, and tell more stories, and get into the characters a lot more." Check out the rest of the Q&A here.

First Look: BBC’s Wizards vs. Aliens from Russell T. Davies

Steven Moffat discusses new Doctor Who companion Jenna-Louise Coleman

As previously reported, current "Doctor Who" companion Amy (Karen Gillan) will be leaving the Doctor this season, and BBC announced that actress Jenna-Louise Coleman (pictured above) will be arriving as the new companion during the Christmas special. Showrunner Steven Moffat teased Coleman’s arrival on the show in an interview with Doctor Who Magazine, explaining what will be different and what makes a "good" companion [via Blastr]:

"I’ll answer you in the show about how it’s going to be different. But because it is going to be different. It’s going to be a shock, I think. In terms of the companions all being ‘the same’—that’s not as phony or artistically crap a thing to say as it sounds.

"What is the base group of people who would run away with the Doctor? They’re all going to be a bit mad. A bit dislocated. Not happy with where they are. Are they yearning for outer space? They’re going to be people who feel like they can take on the Doctor, who’s quite an intimidating sort of person. So, they’re going to be feisty—they’re going to be all those things. He sort of defines the people who are going to travel with him. The distinction comes very much from the various actors and actresses. So, you know, they’re the ones who create the differences between them. But you are always going to have the same sort of person, just because it’s the same man choosing them, and it"s the same person being chosen."

"Doctor Who" season 7 will premiere this fall, airing 5 episodes plus the Christmas special and then return in early 2013 with eight more episodes. You can keep up with the latest season 7 information here.

Sci-Fi TV Friday? Oooooh, gimmeee!!

Daleks are cool

wow, Sci-Fi TV News is BACK, thanks a lot Anthony & Rosario.

Hopefully Sci-FI Movies News will be next.

Hooray. Welcome back Rosario. Wait a minute. CBS is thinking about bringing back Jericho but not Star Trek. Family Guy and Futurama come back. But no Star Trek?

Yay!! It’s back. I had kinda forgotten about these articles. What about sci-fi movie?

Correction: Nikita is returning for season 3, not 4. Although, they did get a 22 episode order, so it seems like a season 4 renewal next year is likely.

Bloody hell, two of my favorite shows got axed today, Awake & The River.

I truly hate it when networks make dumb decisions like these. The British are doing it a lot better by having shorter season/series & a clear idea where the show is going.

4. Trek is far, far more expensive to produce than Jericho, Family Guy, or Futurama. I liked Jericho in the first half-season it was on TV, then CBS took it off the air for something like three months and when it finally came back to low viewership, they were baffled about the results. This is the same network that has Star Trek locked up in a box as far as TV is concerned, so don’t hold your breath waiting for Trek to return to TV. If it doesn’t have guns, sex jokes, forensic medicine, or any combination thereof, it won’t get on the air on CBS.

#7

Yeah, but both Awake and The River had British season lengths (btwn 8 – 12 episodes), so I don’t think the blame can be laid there. In the case of The River, I think the problem was they had a setup they didn’t know what to do with. Plus, there really were no likable characters.

Anybody around here, think that an internet campaign to bring Trek back to TV, might have any effect on the powers to be at CBS ?

I have serious doubts, but who know ?

Anthony, enough with that horrid Revolution cast photo…I had seafood and beer tonight, and looking at the photo is not helping my unsettled stomach at all.

@11. MJ

lol, somehow I can’t bring myself to like Revolution, specially after reading the show outline.

@9. sean – May 11, 2012

“#7 Yeah, but both Awake and The River had British season lengths (btwn 8 – 12 episodes), so I don’t think the blame can be laid there. In the case of The River, I think the problem was they had a setup they didn’t know what to do with. Plus, there really were no likable characters.”

My problem is that the networks aren’t giving these show enough time to grow & bring in more audiences. They all looking for another hit, like Lost or 24.

It is specially bad for Sci-Fi shows which by its nature doesn’t reach the mainstream audiences in the same manner as police or medical shows.

Perhaps future genre series should head to the cables, like AMC or HBO where they may get better chances.

#10

Why not? Campaigns do [occasionally] work.
Where do I sign?

Hate to see Awake go; it was intriguing and involving and fun and my bet is that a lot of stuff is going to be left hanging, but I plan to stick it out anyway.
It probably is too good for broadcast TV and probably too expensive for cable, although 2.2 million viewers would be drooled over by some cable networks like HBO or Showtime….

@13. Vultan – May 11, 2012

“#10
Why not? Campaigns do [occasionally] work.
Where do I sign?”

If there are enough people here who wish to see Trek back on TV, then we can start having discussion on how to pull this off.

I joined couple of these campaigns, specially on Facebook & none of it were successful, except Jericho.

Perhaps, to resist the networks is futile!

Sadly Trek won’t be back for a while I think. Don’t think networks want to take the risk with a show that expensive.

Looking forward to Arrow, the New 52 really got me into Green Arrow (though I’m not happy about the new artist). Revolution I’m not sure about. Alcatraz I watched three episodes then lost interest.

Anyone know whatever happened w/ George Lucas’ Star Wars series, not Clone Wars but the one set between Eps. 3 & 4? Haven’t heard if he changed his mind on it or not.

The premise of Revolution sounds rather similar to a trilogy of books I read as a kid that was also a children’s tv series, The Changes by Peter Dickinson. Probaby not in print any more but they were very good stories.

If Jericho returns, I’m gonna freak out over excitement. the second “season” was too short and didn’t really close anything storywise, since the end of the season was hinting at the beginning of a Second US Civil War.

Just working my way through the stuff overhead…cover up your zombieness, with concealer mousse, lol…

Only just about to see the second series of The Walking Dead on UK terrestrial tv myself, looking forward to it very much indeed.

*averts eyes from spoilers*

Doctor Who: I was quite relieved there were no daleks or cybermen last series, too much of the Khan factor about it for me…

Will seriously miss Karen Gillan & Arthur Darvill when they leave though. Two of the best companions ever and great chemistry with Matt Smith as well.

7. Ahmed – one fact about British TV is that it really doesn’t have the same financial resources as the US networks, so I guess less has to be more. But necessity often breeds ingenuity.

Yay SciFi Friday is back!
Thank You very much, it’s one of the best features on this site.
Looking forward to regular updates.

Bummed about Awake’s cancellation. Another great series bites the dust to early. Anybody knows if it will end with a cliffhanger or resolve the realities (which one(s) are real, which aren’t etc) and other open questions?

Generally it’s not looking good for SciFi series it seems.

Will certainly check out Continuum though.

What is it with these zombie shows keeping the zombies alive like real people? Zombies are rotting, undead ex-humans, no matter how they got that way. Left on their own they will fall apart; the cold makes them freeze (no blood circulation!) and the heat makes them rot faster.

If you can stay alive for a couple of weeks after the outbreak, it’s all going to resolve itself.

I had 3 appointment TV series, Awake, Missing and Fringe. 13 weeks into next season, ! will have but one when AMC deigns to air a couple of new episodes of Walking Dead. I don’t understand why cable does it so much differently than TIC, TAC, TOE and Fox…

Check this out, I can’t stop giggling!!

Entertainment Weekly ran a piece about how CGI has made TV cheaper to produce. It cited Pan Am and the fantasy piece Once Upon a Time. Just watched Fringe which relies heavily on CGI.

Let’s just hope that the video game and movie do well. That might get Les Moonves to move. Or maybe they should cast his wife, Julie Chen in any new Star Trek series. ;-)

Well, my long record of picking winners — Alcatraz, The River — continues unblemished.

Futurama!

And Sherlock on PBS. I’ll have to hunt that down.

Lots of good stuff in there. I’ll have to reread it.

Revolution could be good. Might have to watch. Hope that’s not the kiss of death. ;-)

27. First season of Sherlock is on Netflix, first ep of season 2 is still online at PBS.org and second this Sunday night and repeated during the next week a few times.

10 – No, I don’t think a petition or Internet movement would get Trek back on TV any sooner. Do you really think the CBS folks don’t know we’re out here, wanting more Trek on TV?

Seriously, write-in campaigns rarely work, and they’re most useful for letting a network or production company know there’s an audience when the ratings aren’t showing that audience. But nowadays, networks know all about the audience because WE ARE CONSTANTLY TELLING THEM.

The Internet is filled with petitions and write-in campaigns, and plenty of them have been about bringing Trek back to TV. It will happen when the powers that be decide it’s a money-making move.

But they know we’re out here. They know we want Trek. There’s not a single CBS executive with power over Trek’s future who doesn’t already know that Trekkies want more Trek.

Do you think anyone needs Cheech & Chong to say, “We like pot” before the message gets out? Imagine Cheech & Chong debating something like this:
Cheech: Hey, we gotta do something, man! We oughta write the Prez a letter to tell him we want marijuana to be legal.
Chong: I think he already knows, man…

CBS already knows, man…they know Trekkies want more Trek. A petition would just waste time: Save it for a useful day.

Hey Thank’s Rosario for bringing back Scifi Friday. Allready knew about Supernatural being renewed and I am very happy with that. Some of these new show’s look promising.
Do no Harm and Revalution look’s like they can be pretty good. I actually did like to show Jericho. Hope they can work that out.
But what about Star Trek on T.V

Seafood and beer….an explosive combination!

Don’t want to be MJ right now….. :-)

Rosario:

Welcome back!

You forgot to mention just how jaw-droppingly awesome “Game of Thrones” is, and that they were green-lit for season 3 last month (April 10th)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Game_of_Thrones_%28season_3%29

A: where the frack you been?

B: revolution poster is damn awful horrible pop-poster cheesiness!

Anyone else have flashbacks to the Terra Nova poster?

Not so much Fringe, more like *cringe!*

Glad you’re back with something interesting Rosario

Looks like you forgot to add that the Cartoon Network renewed The Clone Wars, lol. Oh well, I knew that two weeks ago anyway, lol!

Shame about Alcatraz
Clearly the Fringe people were prepared to not come back, they pretty much wrapped it up, I wonder if the next season will take place largely in the watchers future

First trailer for the new show, “Revolution”,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JwfCRAtkYEI

Watch when it get to the 3:51 mark !!

Not really excited now about this new series from Abrams.

Thanks for bringing my attention to the show, Continuum. I hope it airs in the states!

Revolution is simply…. STUPID.
.
“Planes fall from the sky, hospitals shut down, and communication is impossible.
.
Planes would still glide. The Gimli Glider proves even a 767 can be flown. Nothing would “fall”, as that would imply forward momentum magically disappeared. That isn’t a removal of electricity, it’s a violation of Newton’s First Law.
.
Hospitals shut down? Even though hospitals go back to the Roman era? There were hospitals before electricity.
.
Communication impossible? Did the printing press magically get forgotten, too? What are these people, stupid?
.
Not even going to mention the stupidity of having a room filled with gazillions of candles. They can produce candles, but they can’t produce gunpowder?
.
This thing is so stupid, it’s sucking all the intelligence out of the room. But of course, it figures NBCUniversal would promote something this idiotic. That the description they provide actually doesn’t know the difference between the Industrial Revolution and the electrification of industry in the early to mid 1900’s…. geesh. Then again, considering how woeful education in history is in the United States… I’m not surprised.

Arrow sounds like the new “Birds of Prey”. Not a compliment.
