BREAKING: 9-Minute Star Trek Into Darkness Preview To Debut in IMAX 3D with Hobbit Movie

We have all been waiting for news on the first look at JJ Abrams Star Trek Into Darkness. And this afternoon Paramount announced that a 9-minute extended preview of the movie will premiere  on IMAX 3D on December 14th. More details below. [UPDATED]

Extended Preview Of Star Trek Into Darkness Showing With Hobbit

Paramount has confirmed with TrekMovie that an extended preview of JJ Abrams 2013 feature Star Trek Into Darkness will be shown exclusively with IMAX 3D showings of The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which premieres on December 14th. This preview is similar to how the first 7 minutes of Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Rises was shown ahead of IMAX screenings of Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol (which was produced by JJ Abrams, small world). Just like with that preview, you will have to go to the theaters to catch this first glimpse of the movie as TrekMovie has also confirmed the preview will not be shown online.

press release

WORLD PREMIERE EXTENDED PREVIEW OF J. J. ABRAMS’ "STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS" TO DEBUT IN IMAX 3D ON DECEMBER 14th

THE FIRST 9-MINUTES FROM THE ANTICIPATED SEQUEL WILL BE RELEASED EXCLUSIVELY IN DIGITAL IMAX 3D THEATRES WORLDWIDE

HOLLYWOOD, CA (November 14, 2012) – Paramount Pictures will release the first 9-minutes from J.J. Abrams’ eagerly-awaited “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” exclusively in IMAX 3D months prior to the film’s official release in May 2013. This first-look at the movie will play in approximately 500 digital IMAX 3D theatres beginning December 14th.

“STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS,” the sequel to Abrams’ 2009 hit film that redefined the Star Trek universe for a new generation, marks the first time exclusive footage has played in IMAX 3D and only the third time a first-look will be released in IMAX.

“Our longtime partners J.J. Abrams, Bryan Burk and the Bad Robot team have really hit it out of the park – the footage is absolutely incredible," said Greg Foster, Chairman and President, IMAX Filmed Entertainment. “Their use of the IMAX® Camera and canvas is sure to impress current and future Star Trek fans alike, and we’re thrilled to once again work with our friends at Paramount Pictures to offer this extended ‘first look’ at this highly anticipated summer blockbuster.”

To further the IMAX experience, “STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” used IMAX cameras to capture several sequences. Exclusively in IMAX theaters, sequences filmed with the extremely high-resolution cameras will expand to fill more of the screen with unprecedented crispness and clarity, putting moviegoers right into the explosive action and vast scope of the film.

“STAR TREK INTO DARKNESS” is written by Damon Lindelof, Alex Kurtzman & Roberto Orci and directed by J.J. Abrams. Abrams is producing with Bryan Burk through Bad Robot Productions, along with Lindelof, Kurtzman and Orci.

TrekMovie will be following up this announcement with more details as we learn them.

Fantastic news! Cannot wait

YES!!! Can’t wait!!!

;-) :-)

What movie will feature it???

on my birthday = )

4 weeks away until this footage it will be all over the web! At last, now when is the TRAILER?

Ok so what about a regular teaser trailer? Why just IMAX?

@galemazuma The only IMAX 3D movie that comes out on Dec. 14 is “The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey”…

WOOOHOOOOO!!!!!!!!

I just want a simple little trailer. Pleaaaase.

WOOOOOOOOOOHOOOO!!!! Yeah baby!

I was about to post this. Just read it on IGN.com! Great job Trekmovie

I’ve absolutely no idea how or where I’ll be able to see it… BUT nevertheless, that’s exciting news!

Sounds good…. looking forward to it.

Are people SERIOUSLY bitching that they’re not getting a teaser trailer yet when we’re getting the first 9 MINUTES?!

Some people are never satisfied. Sad, really.

I however CANNOT be more excited!

…..What?

So soon ???

:))

whew! bout time

Will I have to take the family to an IMAX movie we might not care to see, simply in hopes of catching the first 9 minutes of STID? Not sure what else is debuting on that date. Maybe it will be obvious which flick to pick.

In any case, I’m not complaining. The first nine minutes! Wow, this is a new and exciting concept. I just hope that with this 9 minutes and the trailers, there will be a lot of movie left to see and some surprises yet to be had when we finally settle in for the whole experience.

So is this like paired with another movie, or do we buy tickets to go see a 9 minute preview?

Sweet! I knew we’d be getting news before January. Just a matter of patience. But I won’t be going to see it… don’t want to see anything before the movie comes out. But this is great news for everyone that wants to see a lot!

I’m going to guess that it will be shown before The Hobbit.

It HAS to be with ‘The Hobbit’. My interest in this film has suddenly increased enormously!

so…is it free? is it attached to a film?

@17 Hopefully like #7 said, it’ll be attached to The Hobbit…and I’m sure you’ll enjoy that!

I wonder if the villain is named in the first 9 minutes?

You green-blooded inhuman hobgoblin! You scooped me!

What about the UK?

*takes his trusty HD camera with him on Dec 14*

Yes, it’s with The Hobbit!! See link @ 21

Anthony…can you confirm The Hobbit attachment?

Hopefully those of us without IMAX won’t have to wait too much longer…

KHAAAAAAANNNNN!

Or GARRRYYYYY SEVENNNNNN!

@31, that’s the only major motion picture being released that weekend. For obvious reasons.

Question.

Is this the first time we have seen “Star trek Into Darkness” as the official title? Anywhere?

@28, As far as I’m aware, if the 9 minutes is attached to the same “reel” as The Hobbit, this will also be the case for IMAX theatres in the UK(and worldwide) playing The Hobbit :)

Brilliant news

Everyone. Please try and remember that Trek is way bigger than IMAX.

Looking forward to it, if I can find an IMAX that will be showing it. I wonder if there will be a movie playing after the first nine minutes. The Hobbit opens up on that day. And it’s in IMAX. Yeah, I know those are two different studios but maybe both studios and IMAX have worked something out.

The Hobbit!?

Really!?

Oops, just refreshed the page. Thanks Anthony. It will play before The Hobbit. And tickets for that IMAX showing will be gone fast. Must find out if it will play here at the IMAX theaters in Cincinnnati.

BEST BIRTHDAY PRESENT EVER I AM IN TEARS

HAPPY LEONARD NIMOY DAY, ALL

I wish I lived closer than 3 hours from the nearest IMAX theater…

Maybe we’ll get a teaser/trailer for those of us not living in the Big City ™?

Based on the way Nolan did it for the Dark Knight movies….does anyone know how long the preview will stay attached?

I mean…if i go on saturday….or sunday….will the preview still be attached?

Hmm interesting. I didn’t like when they did this for Dark Knight. It ruined the reveal of Joker for the movie because I’d seen it several times by the time it came out.

I guess we’ll see what happens, I’ll probably watch it anyway =)

Does this mean a trailer will be out before hand then? It seems dumb to release footage before the trailer hits =P

Sweet! Got my tics already. Im now more excited about 9 minutes than i am about 2HRS40 MIN? They give us a little Cumberbatch or i’ll be a total Cumberbitch (couldnt help it).

Wish it was RPX- we have a brand-new RPX theater, and its screen is bigger than the “IMAX”.

Cool. I already purchased my tickets for the Hobbit over the weekend.

BUT….I hope there’s at least a standard trailer for all non-IMAX showings as well. Just promoting the movie on the 500 IMAX screens will not get as many eyeballs on it.

Is it only on 3D? I’d prefer IMAX 2d, if that option is available
