I actually said back in 2009 I was willing to pay extra per season if it helped get these on blu-ray. Now here they are asking for the price of other shows on blu-ray? Its a lot less than I said I was willing to pay. So I don’t care if I end up paying more now than I would have. Besides the more money they get, the more chance we have of getting DS9, and Voyager released and Enterprise is already coming out.

Nice theory, but like I said, I picked up TOS all three seasons Blu-Ray for $82 three weeks ago, and Red Dead Ryan can buy it right now for $8 more than that.
A trio of Ron Moore commentaries is even more than I had hoped for. This is a no brainer purchase for me. I don’t spend a lot of money, so splurging once every few months on Trek is fine by me. The extras on S1 and S2 were both excellent and this looks to be even more packed.
Are you kidding me? The special features from the stand-alone Best of Both Worlds disc aren’t included in the S3 Blu set? What, $130 isn’t enough for these guys?

$2.30 per episode is hardly being ripped off, MJ! What you are talking about is owning the entire series — seven seasons worth — for below wholesale price (i.e. less than $20 per season). That’s just completely unrealistic… and doesn’t show much common sense either.
Show me another series on Blu-ray with more than 1,100 minutes of content per season that costs less than $20.
“Fringe” comes close, but then again, it wasn’t sitting in a salt mine in Pennsylvania for a quarter century in tens of thousands of individual pieces! It’s a contemporary show on network TV which sold a ton of advertisements every week for the last 5 years. And they had HD masters ready to go!

You will almost always be able to purchase media cheaper months and years later, then original releases (unless something is completely out of print). That’s hardly news or surprising.
Many of DVD and blu-rays can be lowered to under $5/ DVD, $9/ bluray and still deliver a very small profit for a studio. Most studios would never bother for just that small amount of profit. But since they charge more for the initial year, and make a lot larger amount, they can live with making far less later. It’s like the difference between first run releases and the dollar release for the theatre. Movie studios would never, ever be able to survive off of the very tiny fraction they would earn just off of the dollar run of movies. But of course, by the time they enter that portion of a run, the films have already generated 99% of their revenue, so its no big deal. Same basic principal.
Of course the TOS and TNG remasters are a fairly special bred for television releases, in that they are vastly more expensive to produce then a normal tv releases.
When Game of Thrones releases their ten episodes season, the show was already mastered for HD, it’s already been edited, all post production work was already done, ect. The cost is primarily the cost of printing and making the disc. That isn’t the case here at all. Not in the slightest.
And as for the cost being high its all subjective, after all there are fans who can remember paying 29.99 for just two episodes, for VHS quality, meaning we were paying $390 a season. Paying for that content plus a lot of extras and at a quality level vastly superior, seems like a good deal to me.
@17. You are ignoring the triple-dipping though. The studios have already made tons on the VHS, Laserdisk, and DVD’s for this series. And in the 1080P remastering, they will make millions more dollars separate from the blu-rays through online movie delivery and future formats. In this big scheme of things, the production cost of remastering is pretty minor, and doesn’t really determine the price. The price is based on what the market will bear, and in this CBS knows the same suckers who bought the VHS, DVD’s etc, will pay $70 per season for this in their initial run. For a couple years down the road, they will lower the price significantly — and again, this is pretty much unrelated to the production cost of the blu-rays.
Anybody who tell themselves they need to pay the high price to support getting other Trek series to Blu-Ray just doesn’t understand how this all works They are well-meaning suckers who money is easily taken out of their pockets by CBS.
And why am I getting such grief here on my relatively minor opinions on this topic? Well its because people don’t want to learn that they have been ripped off, and so it is easier to reject my arguments than admit that uncomfortable truth.
I am not stopping anyone though from triple-dipping here and paying $70 for the latest incarnation of TNG. It’s a free country — go for it!

Lest we not forget, the prices for S1 and S2 dropped from the MSRP that was that high down to $60-65 (through Amazon themselves, not a seller) by the date of release. Season 3 will be no different. The BOBW standalone will likely drop to the same rate the sampler disc in 2011 did…I picked it up on its street date at Wal-Mart without a discount for $14.99.

First of all, that’s a UK import with VAT taken off for sale in the US. When it first came out in the UK, it was £97.07 or $153.33. Multiply that by 2.4 to reach the number of minutes TNG has, that’s $368. That’s roughly $2 per episode.
Second of all, “Heroes” was a primetime network show, supported by tons of advertising revenue with 1080p masters ready to go for Blu-ray. Remember that “Heroes” wasn’t sitting in tens of thousands of pieces in a salt mine in Pennsylvania for a quarter century like TNG.
Even in its waning third season, “Heroes” was averaging $4.3 million in ad revenue per telecast — $108 million for the season. By the time they were ready to debut the season on Blu-ray a mere five months later, NBC was swimming in cash. They could afford to set the price at around $50 when it first came out, but it’s taken several years for it to come down to below $20.
TNG on Blu-ray is scheduled to be completed in August of 2014, so you’ll have to wait until then to get your hands on a complete series set. But you’re deluding yourself if you think you’ll be able to buy it right away for less than $140. You’d probably have to wait until 2017-2020 until it drops anywhere close to that. As Bill pointed out earlier, the complete TNG series DVD set from five years ago is still $250.
And I still fail to see how $2.30 per episode is a rip off. Compare that to the “Heroes” numbers at the top. $2.30 per episode is a rip off right at release for TNG, but $2 per episode years later for a “Heroes” complete series set isn’t?
Not sure why the difference in cost between Canada and US, US and Canadian Dollar have been at parity for a while now.
Not that it matters, I don’t buy these types of things, especially at these prices.

The Best of Both Worlds should have been TNG’s first feature film instead of the mediocre Generations.
They really need to do a CGI-altered version of The Best of Both Worlds, and all other TNG Borg episodes, to alter the Borg appearance and ship internal design, to match what the altered look later on was, and which premiered, and not just as an ‘upgrade’, but as a retroactive redesign, as evidenced by Picard flashbacks to Locutus, in Star Trek: First Contact.
I will be getting Best of Both Worlds on Blu-Rey. Can’t wait to see it.

“Heroes” is a poor example. The show is notorious for jumping the shark after the first season and limping along until it was finally put out of its misery. It is not a franchise, and I am willing to bet a fair amount of consumers are not willing to buy it at any price, hence the deep discount to entice the few who will. It is the law of supply and demand.

Why is season 3 near double S1 and S2? Was this the plan….get you hooked at the start then bump up the price to catch up? It’s a bit much CBS and Amazon. Maybe another $20 for few more episodes from S2 but DOUBLE!
