Exclusive: Simon Pegg Told JJ ‘Dont Forget Us’ After Landing Star Wars Job + More From Pegg/Karl Urban Interview

At the official Star Trek Into Darkness junket, TrekMovie.com had a chance to sit down with the two biggest Star Trek fans in the new cast – Karl Urban and Simon Pegg. We talked about Pegg upping his Scottishness, Karl showing McCoy’s warmth, the triumvirate, the future of Star Trek with a possible new director and more.

TrekMovie talks To Urban and Pegg about Into Darkness & next Trek

Here is the exclusive video interview

Highlights

Karl Urban on if he feels McCoy is still part of the ‘big three’ with Kirk and Spock, in this universe

The great thing that JJ has done is every character their moment to shine and that is certainly true in the film. I would argue this is very early on in the formation of the crew as we know and come to love in the original series. And that triumvirate. I know what you are saying – I know what the concern is, and on a forward going basis we have to be vigilant to make sure it is respected.

Simon Pegg on offering [question submitted by Maggie from Washington]

JJ is always up for that – particularly as Karl and I are fans of the original series and have a lot of Star Trek knowledge. Sometimes things come up and you suggest. Often I put forward little Scottishisms just to make sure Scotty’s ethnicity was intact. JJ would grade that on a level of the audiences ability to understand

Karl Urban on McCoy’s irascibleness and his warmth

Yeah I did [up McCoy’s irascibility] this time, but there are quite a few beats where you get to see the warmth within that. Certainly in that third act towards the end…when you get to see how frantically Bones works to do what he does and what it means to him, I think that is a real wonderful side to the character.

Simon Pegg on JJ Abrams directing the next Star Wars and its effect on next Star Trek

One of the first things I did when I found out JJ was taking on Star Wars was to email him and say "hey don’t forget us" as a knee-jerk reaction. I got a lovely email back saying "of course not." JJ is far too committed to this universe to ever let it go…Even if JJ doesn’t direct the next [Star Trek] film – even if he hands it off to what would only be a brilliant director – he would still be involved as a producer. As he was on Mission Impossible Ghost Protocol, which is a Bad Robot production and smacks of JJ and had Brad Bird at the helm, who was an incredible director. I am incredibly excited as it means we might be able to make the film sooner than we thought. If JJ is off doing Star Wars, then we don’t have to wait for him to do Star Wars to do Star Trek. This is my hypothesizing. It might be less than four years. We might get it out for the 50th anniversary, which would be good.

Got my tix for Thursday night. Super excited. Even more so after reading Altmans take on the film as I am a Trek purist but enjoy both worlds. Hope there’s enough of McCoy to keep that green blooded Vulcan in check.

So glad both of these guys were cast. I see it in 6 hours.

For the 50th anniversary film, they just HAVE to recreate the original TOS opening! Imagine the alternate Enterprise circling that red planet and swooooshing by, all to the classic tune… :D

BONES!!!!!!!!!! Great the big three is still a work in progress! 26 more hours!!!

If JJ doesn’t direct Trek 3 / 13 then my choices would be :

1.Brad Bird
2.Duncan Jones
3.Nick Meyer – get him back one last time.
4.Spielberg – the ultimate in payback.
5.Chris Nolan – Take Into Darkness’ Dark Knight inspiration to it’s logical conclusion.

I see Anthony has gone all Mirror Universe on us!

Finally get to see what Anthony looks like! God this movie is gonna be fun I can’t wait.

JJ already tipped his hand: it’ll be Rian Johnson (LOOPER).

I’d go gay for Karl Urban. Yup.

lets have George Lucas for Star Trek 3

Anthony! You are the real deal! :)

Wow, Karl was really diplomatic in that troika question, uh?

Thank you so much for this interview!

I wonder if Pegg’s Scotty gets flustered if someone dares insult the Enterprise.
“Laddie, you can insult me, you can insult my friends, you can even insult my pet tribble. But, never ever insult my ship. Now, are you going to take that back and apologize, or do I need to familiarize you with the back of my hand?”
Would be great. That and, “It is green.” Even if that is recycling, it’s a classic Star Trek reference and one of my favorites.

I am first in line for showing 2 1/2 hours from now. Surfing the net while I wait. We have waited a long time for this. I am betting it is worth it.

Excellent interviews! Love these guys!

I pray JJ forgets them. Maybe if he sticks with Star Wars proper he will stop trying to turn Trek into Star Wars. He said he was never a fan of Trek, and he tried, successfully, I think, to rip its soul out and mutate it into Star Wars. Please forget, JJ.

J.J. has done a wonderful job presenting Star Trek to a new generation. I am of the old generation, running home on Sunday afternoons so as not to miss the show! That was before PVRs and even video recorders! If you missed it on the television, you just missed it altogether. I’m sure that he’ll hand it to someone who is equally up to the challenge!
Nice to hear from the Trek fans on the cast of the new movies, too.

God I wish they’d bring Nick Meyer back

Brad Bird would do it justice I believe.

Sam Mendes. Not sure if he’d be interested in doing an fx heavy movie though, which is a shame because he’s great on characterisation.

I hope you are taking notes, Orci…….. the next movie you simply must give Karl a chance to show what he can do. He has been terribly wasted twice now. A third time would be unforgiveable. How you do it? Well, you can earn your money and come up with that one yourself.

I will add I did enjoy Kirk calling Scotty while Scott and Keenser were enjoying a drink, or three in San Francisco. Pegg plays it very well.
Dare I say it even the writing is ok in that scene! But mostly its the acting that makes it!

Brad Bird is great. But he is developing original properties.

I just thought of Peter Weir. Great director, underutilized, terrific eye, and also a huge fan of Aubrey-Maturin, which is a varient of Kirk-Spock, as demonstrated by his efforts to bring Master and Commander to life.

Seriously, think about it.

@2 I sooo loved Scotty in this. :)

Also, thanks for using my question!!!

In a fangirl cloud of smug and happiness here. :D

Funny, just as with James Doohan before him, to me it becomes increasingly “surprising”, NOT to hear Pegg speak with a Scottish accent. Not so much concerning Karl Urban and McCoy’s southern accent, though – but I guess that’s just due to the fact, that his Scottish accent is indeed a defining characteristic of the character of Scotty, while McCoy’s (i.e. Kelley’s) accent is more of a “it’s just there” kind of thing (moreover being simply DeForest Kelley’s native accent – which on the other hand makes Urban’s ability to make it sound natural stand out as an even greater achievement!)
