A welcome unannounced gift appeared on CBS Home Entertainment’s YouTube channel last week in the form of a Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 5 trailer for the remastered Blu-ray edition. After the break we’ve also got the trailer for the imminent releases of the TNG Season 4 set and the single-disc edition of the Season 4/5 cliffhanger Redemption along with full details on the July releases. Plus the Enterprise Season 2 trailer!
While no release date has been given, Season 5 is expected in time for the holidays later this year and CBS quietly put up a sneak peek of what is often considered The Next Generation’s best season.

Season 5 is widely considered the best? I really love it personally, but these days I’m always seeing talk about how much better 3, 4 and 6 are. Just something that took me back a bit. Have I been chilling with the wrong crowd or something?
(For the record, I don’t really have a favorite year; they’re all up-and-down but generally good from 3 onward to me.)
Yeah, I’ve never heard S5 being considered the best. 3 is the best IMO. 5 has a few filler episodes, and I can only think of one or two in 3 (“The Bonding” is awful, for example).
3, 4 & 5 for me.
Obviously different people take different things from each episode. The first time I saw The Bonding, I was still in the early days of remission after 12 months of chemo, and I had 2 small children. This episode so resonated with me that I made sure I had a copy of it so I could watch it with my kids, and attempt to use it as a tool to help them prepare them for the possibility that I wouldn’t always be around for them, no matter how much I wanted to be. Thankfully, both my children are now adults, and by the grace of God, I am still here.

@2 – I personally think 3 and 4 are superior to 5, but they all shine compared to 6 and 7. Those two feel like the worst of Voyager, in the guise of TNG.
The only way s3 would have been better is if they’d spent all of it in the YESTERDAY’S Everse (lighitng on bridge is so much better there!)

This 4:3 aspect ratio was addressed by the CBS crew many times already. The show simply can not be ‘corrected’ for several reasons.

In addition to what I mentioned above, there is really nothing to ‘correct’ about the Next Gen 4:3 aspect ratio, that’s simply the way the show was made back then. It’s not wrong just because we have 16:9 today. :)
Exactly. Was about to say the same. There is nothing to correct. Whether you like the aspect ratio or not it is correct.
I don’t understand why ppl keep complaining about this. When we were dealing with pan&scan years ago… it was because we were missing a portion of the image. We wanted to see the whole thing. Why would we want to go back to missing parts of what was photographed.
Studios should always release in the original aspect ration. How hard is it to zoom in and crop to 16:9 on your TV? The press of a button. MPC and VLC also do this in one mouse click on a computer. In fact I watch a lot of old stuff like this to see detail and then return to the full aspect ratio when I want to see the whole image as photographed. How hard is this?

I blame it on the lack of art education. If people spent a little time in art museums they’d get the concept that art comes in various non-uniform frame sizes – some purposefully with *shudder* black borders in oversized frames.
I’ve often pondered that maybe it’s just the blackness of the border that jars some so, as they are used to the whiteness of the theater screen? Not very hard electronically to make it white like a motion picture screen.
When Disney decided to promote SLEEPING BEAUTY on a television FM radio simulcast in the 50s, they didn’t like the top and bottom blackness introduced, either, in fitting their widescreen onto the aspect ratio of then. They filled the black space with artwork to make it look like taking place in a theater. I mention it because if the Disney artists of then thought it needed to be addressed, maybe there’s more to this phenomenon than I can fathom?
I have relatives that prefer to stretch old TV shows and non 16:9 widescreen movies rather than have black borders. I find the silly putty distortions as repugnant as they do the border.
#8 – Season Six had my two favorite episodes of “TNG” in it – “Relics” and “Tapestry”. ‘Nuff said.
Where’s TrekMovie been? This trailer has been available for 2 weeks now (June 28), whereas the reportedly “missing” breakdowns for the S4 and Redemption releases have been around for nearly 2 months (May 15). Trekmovie is really out of the loop lately…
@6 – I went looking for those on your site and I couldn’t find ’em, I didn’t look far enough back. What really sucks is I’ve explicitly asked the PR rep contact I have and they still have never given copies of the PR to me to post. It had been so long ago that I’d forgotten they were issued quite a while ago.
Oooooh, Michael Dorn sounds bitter in that snippet. Kind of getting the feeling he’s not too hot on Crosby.
I almost want to buy this set just to know how the rest of that interview plays out.
#5 – That’s a nice story. I’m glad the episode worked for you, and you obviously had a personal connection to it. I didn’t. I skip it every time. There are lots of TNG episodes I skip when I rewatch, and about half of DS9.
I still watch every TOS episode, even “And the Children Shall Lead.” Weird, that.
But fortunately for all of us, we have the choice which episodes to love and which to ignore, and all in glorious HD.
I wish they would cut out the narrators attempt at humor. “even Wesley!!”
Plus, how about some music? to make it seem more adventurous?
About half of the cuts work, but the rest kind of fall flat. Normally I wouldn’t say anything, but the trailer for season 3 – with the visual punchline being Data laughing from Deja Q -in addition this Wesley bit leaves me feeling a bit patronized.
I just kind of “briefed” the comments – no Enterprise haters yet?
Fan of the franchise since 1974 and really hoping for that fifth season on NetFlix! (but not holding my breath, or should I?)

You know…Is there any way to do a spinoff with funding from a kickstarter campaign while avoiding lawsuits? We’ve waited way too long for another series. These rights issues suck. Get it going on kick starter! I would so chip in a few hundred bucks and so would millions of fans!
Well, I can see that fan interest in Enterprise continues to hover somewhere between zero and none.
The Howard Stern Show replayed an interview with Jolene Blalock this week. The interview took place in 2002. She was saying that she would never have worked any other Trek series. “Come on, do you think I would want to be on DS9”. She seemed to think that from an actors artistic point of view, that the previous Trek shows were inferior to Enterprise.

Really? I think Season 3 is considered the best, while seasons 4 and 5 are runners up. Remember Season 3 was a shot in the arm after a sleepy start to TNG – new wardrobes, set upgrades, lighting / photography improvements, not too mention amazing eps like “Yesterday’s Enterprise” and “Best of Both Worlds p1.”
Season 5 gave us the dreary season ender “Time’s Arrow” and the I think fans get all gooey about “The Inner Light” (good ep, but over-rated) and suddenly Season 5 is the best season, but it isn’t.

Yes, the US release is not locked. As I recall none of the TNG Blu-ray releases have been region locked.
@33. Yep. Dumb. These TV Movie editions have exclusive featurettes too. Watch them lock the region on this now, when every other Trek Blu ray is playable in the UK. I’ve noticed somebody over at Amazon UK is importing it and will report back. Will probably wait until after others have taken the risk. Thanks though.
