Great Links: Zach Quinto in Xbox One Ad + Picardo Tweets + NSFWorf + Victoria’s Trek Secret + Ode to Spot Art + More October 26, 2013

by Kayla Iacovino , Filed under: Great Links , trackback

The great thing about the internet is that there’s always more new stuff to see, laugh at, or be disgusted by. This week’s Great Links brings you some of the best Trek stuff floating around the interwebs this week. Read Robert Picardo’s tweets (with pics of his Trek co-stars), a comic that redefines the meaning of NSFW, see Victoria’s Secret’s new line of Trek-inspired tops, and buy your very own sleeveless Trekkie innuendo tee shirt.

New Xbox One: Invitation Ad features Zachary Quinto as Spock
The latest from Xbox One is an ad that shows you how the latest gaming system combines games, movies, sports, and friends. We’re partial to the girl who’s jamming to Star Trek Into Darkness, with a personal invitation from Mr. Spock.

Thanks @robertmclaws for the link!

Picardo Tweets w/Trek co-stars
Robert Picardo is a blast to follow on Twitter. Recently, he posted some photos of him with other Trek celebs to try and garner up some more followers. He tweeted, “I have discovered if I tweet a photo with a Trek actor, I get another 100 followers. This should be good for 200?”

By the way, Robert Picardo is slated to co-star in a new production of 12 Angry Men live at the Pasadena Playhouse. There’s even a 20% discount for Trekkies! See the flyer below:

This new Savage Chickens comic strip redefines the term NSFW.

ThinkGeek Selling Exclusive Star Trek TNG Data Poster: Ode to Spot
Check out this awesome new poster on sale exclusively at ThinkGeek. It’s an ode to an ode to a cat. The poster is 18″x24″ and sells for $14.99.

Victoria’s Trek Secret
Reddit user /u/DestructorKitten posted this gem on /r/StarTrek, saying, “Apparently Victorias Secret thinks Star Trek is *in* this season. I came home last night and the new VS catalogue was in my mailbox. As I flipped through it, I stumbled on this. Is it just me, or is this TNG?” It’s not just you, DestructorKitten. It’s not just you. (although, we’d argue this is more DS9, but whatever)

Sleeveless Star Trek Sexual Innuendo Tee of the Day
Over on Geekologie, we stumbled on this interesting new product. If someone buys this and posts a picture of themselves wearing it, I will not only repost it, but you will be my personal hero. Bonus points for an oversized, skewed baseball hat and big sunglasses. Surely a bargain at only $27 from Look Human.

1. CmdrR - October 26, 2013

Big Worf-whistle at Marina and to the Victoria’s Starfleet ladies.

Thanks, Kayla!!

ps – I could get so spoiled seeing this feature every week!!

2. ObsessiveStarTrekFan - October 26, 2013

Ha! I love Picardo’s Dr Who T-shirt. …and I love Spock/Quinto’s eyebrow raise ;-)

Thanks for posting these items, Kayla.

3. Marja - October 26, 2013

Loved the NSFW … LOL!

4. crazydaystrom - October 26, 2013

Cool stuff Kayla, thanks.
Do you, or anyone for that matter, know if Quinto performed for that commercial or if that was some kind of manip? These days it’s so easy to ‘put anyone any where’.

5. Hat Rick - October 26, 2013

Yay! Two stories by Kayla in a row! Plus, great story.

I hope the next story is a bit more science-y.

But it’s still great!

The Data painting reminds me of Future Data from “All Good Things.”

6. Norm - October 26, 2013

A friend of mine has a black sweater with a Trek-like top (albeit in purple, a non-canon color). She, erm, fills it rather nicely, and is well aware of the effect it has on me.

7. Toonloon - October 26, 2013

X Box One – for white dudes. And one white chick who likes Netflix.

8. LizardGirl - October 26, 2013

Hnnn…still don’t want a XBOX One…

9. Jack - October 26, 2013

7. Indeed. The TV/commercial/film world gets whiter every day. Kudos to Sleepy Hollow for a bit more diversity. Revolution is still pretty damned white (Adam Beach’s guest spot aside).

2. That was no eyebrow raise.

10. fiall - October 26, 2013

you can order here the star trek sweat shirt here:

also in blue btw ^^

11. Harry Ballz - October 26, 2013

Quinto will prove to have quite the career.

Whenever he’s short of cash, all he has to do is slap “the ears” on! KA-CHING!

It’s always nice to have options in life!

12. Marja - October 26, 2013

I figured out why Spock looks so odd.

Quinto’s wearing a wig and has his significant dark brows covered by some sort of brow mask.

He may want a freebie X-box but not enough to do the whole haircut/brows thing! ;-D

13. ObsessiveStarTrekFan - October 26, 2013

Assuming the XBOX ONE commercial was filmed recently, it makes sense that Quinto would not be dramatically altering his actual appearance while The Glass Menagerie is still playing.

14. Harry Ballz - October 26, 2013

yeah, picture it….Comic Con 2047….Quinto, squeezing into his male girdle (called a “Shatner”), makes a guest appearance for some quatloos. As he slaps the Vulcan wig on his head and waddles out on stage he mutters, “it’s showtime!”

15. Victor Hugo - October 26, 2013

This X-box commercial is superb!

Not buying of couse, i still have my PS2, my PS3 and my PSP, i´m well served :)

16. ObsessiveStarTrekFan - October 26, 2013

@13. Harry Ballz – October 26, 2013

How inapproriate of me ;-) When I read your scene I was immediately transported to Galaxy Quest…

17. Harry Ballz - October 26, 2013

Good to hear, OSTF! That is basically what I was going for.

18. Mike C. - October 26, 2013

I’d love to see Erica Durance in a T’Pol outfit + that Victoria’s Secret getup!!

19. Gowron8472 - October 26, 2013

Cool. Robert. Picardy has the same shirt as me. Now I feel special.

20. Harry Ballz - October 26, 2013

@17 Mike C.

Aw, now you’re just trying to bait me!

I mean, c’mon, how would a horse ever fit into one of those outfits?

21. DJT - October 26, 2013

1) The NSFWorf cartoon had me rollllling. “This cartoon has no honor”. eF’ing classic.

2) Data painting. Must have.

3) TNG ladies …muuuy caliente.

4) Vulcan on the streets Klingon in the sheets AWESOME.

22. Buzz Cagney - October 27, 2013

I’m with Picardo regarding Stargate. I found it to be far more enjoyable than any contemporary Trek show. Maybe that makes me not very bright but enthusiastic like a child. I can live with that over overly ambitious and po-faced like some of the later Trek’s were.

23. Marja - October 27, 2013

12, OSTF, Of course he wouldn’t. He’s getting rave reviews along with other members of the ensemble. Wish I could go to NYC right now!

Basically, I was just trying to figure out why he didn’t look quite … exactly … right.

18 Ballzy, LOL! [Waggles eyebrows] “Yesterday I shot a horse in my Victoria’s Secret top. How she got in there I’ll never know”

24. Marja - October 27, 2013

Y’know, it’s interesting that Quinto won’t do the Vulcan hand salute a la Nimoy when greeting fans, but will don the ST regalia to be in an Xbox commercial

25. Mike C. - October 27, 2013

@ 18 Harry Ballz

Sorry. Had to do it. SMALLVILLE is on my cable On Demand service and I was watching an episode when I read this article.

What were they thinking?!?

26. Gary 8.5 - October 27, 2013

Speaking of Quinto,
He is the executive producerof the new Robert Redford film,
All Is Lost .
Redford , lost at sea by himself.
That is the movie and it is a good one .
Check it out!

27. Gary 8.5 - October 27, 2013

5.I echo that thought.
I miss Science Saturday so much.

28. Charla - October 27, 2013

Great collection of articles, Kayla!!

29. Harry Ballz - October 27, 2013

@21 Marja

Ah, a fellow Groucho Marx fan! LOVE IT!

30. Plum - October 27, 2013

From the article; “DestructorKitten. It’s not just you. (although, we’d argue this is more DS9, but whatever)”.

I thought so too. *brain snaps* Sexy young girl?!? oh yea! ;p

31. cd - October 27, 2013

Marina and Jonathan are both looking in pretty good shape. I know it is extremely wishful thinking to think that maybe they are preparing for a Star Trek Titan series…

But I can hope, can’t I?

32. PEB - October 28, 2013

@24 because he has trouble doing it. His hand was glued at the end of Trek09 when he had to do it with Nimoy. He is the last one out of the new crew to disrespect the fans. Trust me.

33. THX-1138 - October 28, 2013

Kayla, thanks for this. I love Great Links. With Pancakes.

Seriously, though, your article was like a trip to the good old days here at Trekmovie.

34. Marja - October 28, 2013

32 PEB Quinto can execute a perfect Vulcan salute with his LEFT hand. I have no idea why they made him use his right hand in STXI.

35. Keachick - October 28, 2013

A lot of people have trouble doing the Vulcan LLAP hand gesture. It is likely easier for those who start doing it when they are quite young than it is for someone older.

Leonard Nimoy recounts how he first saw that hand gesture being made when he was a boy with his parents worshipping at a synagogue. Apparently that gesture, made by rabbis at a certain part of one of the Judaist religious rites(?), is not supposed to be seen, but the young Leonard peaked and began copying the hand gesture in secret.

William Shatner, also brought up within the Orthodox Jew (Judaist) religion, apparently never peaked. He has never been able to do those hand movements successfully. Then again, he was playing a human captain who had little, if anything, to do with Vulcans in his formative years, so it sort of makes sense that this character might have difficulty making the correct hand gesture. The fact that he tried to do it is what counts.

The irony comes with the new actors. It seems that Zachary Quinto, who plays the vulcan (LLAP hand gesture) Spock has a lot of difficulty doing that gesture, whereas the actor playing the human Kirk seems to have little difficulty doing that hand gesture. Chris Pine has often been seen giving that hand gesture. Both actors are of a similar age (Zach about three years older) and would have quite possibly been aware of Kirk, Spock etc and the Vulcan LLAP sign… maybe it comes down to learning how to develop and manipulate muscles in the hand/fingers at an early age through learning to play a musical instrument, like a guitar.

*One of CP’s hobbies is playing the guitar…I have no idea about ZQ…

36. Keachick - October 28, 2013

The book sounds absolutely fascinating. It does seem to support my own understanding of how often things played out in those days of the 1960s. It is interesting to note that GR got a boot for telling a (fictional) story dealing with racism in the military (ref. The Lieutenant).

I suspect that, in terms of sociological history, the late 1960’s/early 1970’s, are quite significant, as well as interesting.

37. Keachick - October 28, 2013

Zachary Quinto is left-handed. That makes sense now. I can do the sign with both hands, but it is much easier to do with my right hand, because I am right handed.

38. Keachick - October 28, 2013

My post at #36 belongs on the other thread…oops

39. Mad Mann - October 28, 2013

I Can do the LLAP sign with both hand AND both feet! What now?

Anyway, that XBox ad is mighty cool, any reference to Star Trek is fantastic. We need more!

40. Harry Ballz - October 28, 2013

live long and spread ’em!

41. Son of Jello - October 29, 2013

Re red writing So if my comment is approved, Does that mean Trek movie endorses my opinion?

42. ObsessiveStarTrekFan - October 29, 2013

I agree the LLAP gesture is easier to learn when you are young. I taught myself to do it with both hands when I was 12. My husband, who was not a trekkie growing up (and would deny being one now), can’t really manage it at all. Both my sons could do it before they could handle a knife and fork properly. They were perhaps a little developmentally delayed when it came to handling cutlery…

43. ObsessiveStarTrekFan - October 29, 2013

…oh, and to answer Keachick’s query: I believe Quinto plays the banjo.

44. MrChristian1982 - October 29, 2013

You may be hot, but you’ll never be Marina Sirtis with pigtails hot.

45. Keachick - October 29, 2013

OT – I found this out because there is an unsubstantiated rumour going around that Chris Pine is supposed to be dating this model –

This is just disgusting and pathetic and she does not appear to be doing herself or womankind in general any favours by doing this. I was once a size 10 and doctors told me I was a bit skinny. I wasn’t dieting or anything.

Some females can be so effin’ stupid and big business proving itself to be as corrupt and exploitative as ever…No wonder it’s all big Ka-ching ka-ching for the psychotherapists, personal trainers, “dieticians”…UGH!!!

46. windelkin - October 29, 2013

Awesome stuff, Kayla! Glad you’re still around. Keep it up!

47. conor - October 30, 2013

get the star ship enterprise of game consoles the ps4 not xbox one

48. Basement Blogger - October 30, 2013

Thanks Kayla, and please write some more science articles.

Here’s something I saw on TV the other night. It’s a cool GE ad using the set of the Enterprise. John Cho reprises his Sulu and the pre-Data guy also reprises his role. Forgive me, bald guy. Anyway, here’s the TV ad.

49. Jim Nightshade - October 30, 2013

Great stuff…Dont know if anybodys seen this but Chris Pine and Alice Eve are in Paul McCartneys latest video called Queenie Eye from his NEW album…Its an awesome song….tons of other stars in the video too

Also watch the Making of this video because both Pine and Eve comment on McCartneys legacy….and Paul doesnt like how tall Chris is haha

McCartneys new album is awesome….Best reviewed album in a long time…this one song is very addictive….if you want to get the album get the deluxe version at Target with extra songs and a target only dvd interview bonus disc showing highlights of his Out There tour this year..I got to see him in july at seattles safeco field sold out crowd of 47,000 plus during an encore Nirvana joined Paul for thier song and several beatles classics…

Lemme know if you guys like this

50. Keachick - October 31, 2013

Love it…but I still can’t make what Chris said that Paul said was a line out of “A Hard Days Night”… Chris and Paul look great – fanboys together…:) (Paul being a trekkie fanboy and Chris obviously a Paul McCartney (Beatles) fanboy). The use of “fanboy” here is meant in the nicest and neatest possible way.

I did not realize when I first watched the song video that that was Alice Eve on the piano. She is so attractive and sexy.

This video is so different from much that is around now. It goes back to basics and is enchanting. Song ain’t too bad either…:)

51. Jim Nightshade - October 31, 2013

I agree keachick….no twerking just a great song with everybody grooving to it…..I love how they mentioned how paul and the beatles changed so many lives…..and continue to…..and the history that was at that studio and even the switchboard…..what magic was made then efx done easily now we’re pure originality and incredible artistry……then…..I’d take any mccartney music over most of what passes for music today…

52. Keachick - October 31, 2013

#51 – Funnily enough, I think it may be many of younger generation who may prefer a lot of the music from the late 60’s/early 70’s era. There was so much good music be composed then…gosh, I am showing my age… but when something is good, it is good, it is good…

You know what happened to me after watching the second video. I have had parts of three McCartney songs running around in my head – Queenie Eye, A Hard Days Night and Love Me Do. I have not heard the last two Beatle songs for years and yet the mere mention of A Hard Days Night brings the melody (if not the lyrics) flooding into my memory – damn that man, Sir Paul McCartney – he could write some wickedly good melodies…:)

I recently heard the theme song to the Bond movie, Live and Let Die. It was a Paul McCartney and Wings song – so intense and original sounding. Blew me away the first time I heard it, still does!

53. Jim Nightshade - November 1, 2013

yep i wonder if chris pine ever thought he would be hanging around with paul…trek made that happen for him…id like to hear how paul likes trek…and whats great at the mccartney concert there were kids to 80 somethings all loving paul n the beatles music….new generations finding the magic….howard stern recently interviewed mccartney…hes a big fan…he mentioned helter skelter was the first heavy metal music years before led zep….the beatles innovated like no other group….love live and let die..look up the stern video paul has a story bout how fast he wrote that….n how the bond producers didnt want wings to perform it..paul said if im writing it im performing it..guessnwho won…if u ever go to a macca show that song always has fireworks..they were cool in seattle…
