2014/2015 STAR TREK NOVELS PREVIEW

Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Light Fantastic  (July 2014)
by Jeffrey Lang

Returning to the story begun in the novel Immortal Coil and continuing in the bestselling Cold Equations trilogy, this is the next fascinating chapter in the artificial life of one of Star Trek’s most enduring characters.

He was perhaps the ultimate human achievement: a sentient artificial life-form—self-aware, self-determining, possessing a mind and body far surpassing that of his makers, and imbued with the potential to evolve beyond the scope of his programming. And then Data was destroyed. Four years later, Data’s creator, Noonien Soong, sacrificed his life and resurrected his android son, who in turn revived the positronic brain of his own artificial daughter, Lal. Having resigned his commission, the former Starfleet officer now works to make his way on an alien world, while also coming to grips with the very human notion of wanting versus having a child. But complicating Data’s new life is an unexpected nemesis from years ago on the U.S.S. Enterprise—the holographic master criminal Professor James Moriarty. Long believed to be imprisoned in a memory solid, Moriarty has created a siphon into the "real" world as a being of light and thought. Moriarity wants the solid form that he was once told he
could never have, and seeks to manipulate Data into finding another android body for him to permanently inhabit…even if it means evicting the current owner, and even if that is Data himself.

Star Trek: Seekers 1: Second Nature (August 2014)
by David Mack.

An all-new Star Trek series begins!

A new mission: The late twenty-third century—Starfleet’s golden age of exploration. Desperate to stay one step ahead of its rivals, the Federation sends two starships, the scout Sagittarius and the cruiser Endeavour, to plumb the secrets of the vast region known as the Taurus Reach.

A doomed race: Drawn by mysterious energy readings to a lush green world, the crew of the Sagittarius find the Tomol: a species whose members all commit ritual suicide just as they reach the cusp of adulthood.

An old foe: The crew of the Sagittarius wants to save the Tomol from their cycle of self-destruction, but first they’ll need to save themselves—from the most nefarious Klingon starship commander in history.

Star Trek: Seekers 2: Point of Divergence (September 2014)

The second novel set in The Original Series/Vanguard universe…

The Taurus Reach. Once the conquered realm of a powerful alien species, this region remains largely shrouded in mystery even as it brims with potential for exploration and colonization. The Federation has sent in two of its finest starships on a quest to uncover the secrets it may yet hold…

The Tomol are a primitive civilization occupying a lone island on a remote world. Their culture is an enigma, centered on every member’s commitment to a painful, fiery self-sacrifice upon reaching maturity. But one of their clan has shunned this obligation, triggering a transformation into a new, powerful life form. Answering the distress call of the U.S.S. Sagittarius—which has crashed on the planet following a fierce battle with the Klingons—Captain Atish Khatami and the crew of the Starship Endeavour must now attempt a rescue mission…even as they are locked in battle with the evolving, increasingly malevolent Tomol who, if allowed to escape their home world, pose an imminent threat to the entire galaxy!

More troubling, it appears that several of Voyager’s old adversaries have formed a separate and unlikely pact that is determined to bring down the Confederacy at all costs. Twenty years ago, the deadly daughter of Kodos the Executioner tried to kill Kirk, but she has since been declared sane and rehabilitated. Deep Space 9 is once again becoming an important way station in the Alpha Quadrant for many different people with many different agendas. Uniquely crewed by representatives of different species from both the Khitomer Powers and the Typhon Pact, the Federation science and exploration vessel Athene Donald stops at the station as its final port of call before heading into uncharted territories. The whole project is the brainchild of Dr. Katherine Pulaski, who hopes that science will do what diplomacy alone cannot, and help various powers put aside the tensions of recent years, returning to scientific research and the exploration of space. On DS9, base commander Ro Laren has her hands full with the sudden arrival of a ragtag flotilla of small ships crewed by a group calling themselves the People of the Open Sky. Ro is not keen on handling this first-contact duty, but becomes increasingly intrigued by the People, who are made up of several hitherto unknown species. Describing themselves as
explorers, they are interested in everything about the station. Ro begins to enjoy her assignment, particularly as she takes counsel from the logs of Jean-Luc Picard. Blackmer, however, is more suspicious about these apparently friendly arrivals and monitors their movements around DS9…

They manage to show enough force to keep the alien vessel at bay…but a new danger arises, as their mysterious foes are the Kenisians—a race that used to inhabit this planet

First.

Great stuff to read. I wish they will bring back star fleet academy set in the JJ Verse.

Literary Trek continues to present some highly imaginative plotlines. Once again, might I suggest that Trek novels could be inspiration for other formats of Star Trek, and in addition, that novelists could be involved in the forthcoming movie.

Congratulations, TrekMovie, on this informative article, and on maintaining the recent trend toward such a high quantity of interesting articles. Most impressive.

Yeah, lots of articles lately, not by individuals but by Trekmovie staff. Bet Anthony sold the site. Will be a good year for reading!

Light Fantastic was a fun read. Looking forward to much more Data 2.0 stories.

M’k’n’zy !

I’m way behind in the the various book series, but its great to see this side of Trek living long and prospering. Plus – no JJ-verse. Yay!

Voyager novels are the best. Kirsten Beyer novels are full of good trek, good plots and new ideas.
Jef Lang’ s last novel, the light fantastic ,is a good novel, too . With Data.2 and Lal.2…I’m agree.
And soon, Seekers…space exploration …yoohoo.
Trekkers should read more trek novel and comics…
Movies are not the only thing. And they are not the best, to be sure…

Hehehe, not nu trek novels….original timeline rules

#7 “Hehehe, not nu trek novels….original timeline rules”

That’s ok, nu-trek is there, where it counts, on the silver screen! :)

Wow, those “Seeker” books look like deliberate echos of the James Blish novelizations from Bantam:

8.
Nu Trek : One to die…
After 2016, nothing…Oh, yes, Star Trek novels…Yes, but Original timeline’ s novels only…

Anyone know if Captain Sisko has returned to the regular world?

Also, I know Cmdr. Tucker was brought back in some novels. Was that for good (I still haven’t forgiven Braga and Berman for “killing” him off in the final episode)?

BTW, Star Trek titles can also be pre-ordered at Barnes & Noble..

I read a Trek novel about twice a year. There are so many good books out there but such a short life. I was wondering if Picard and Ro ever had a reunion in the book world.

12-Picard and Ro meet briefly in some of the later DS9 books, and soend more tome together in some of the Typhon Pact stories.

I wonder what the post-The Fall books are going to do when they get up to 2387.

9. John in Canada, eh?

That’s the first thing I noticed as well, love it! Wore out multiple copies of those as a kid in the 70s, terrific reading.

The last crop of TOS books have read like bad fan fiction. Would like to have some JJTrek novels…

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Missing (January 2015)
by Una McCormack

… the frack? Guess I need to read “The Fall,” but I haven’t found the complete series at my local bookstore. Guess it’s Amazon … Frankly I’d rather read about Sisko & co.

15 JimGrant, Ditto. Would love to see some of the adventures of NuEnterprise during the Five-Year Mission, year one only, if it need be so. And speaking of bad fan fiction, some actually made it into the pro market, the books by Sondra Marshak and Myrna Culbreath. Yikes.

Unfortunately I find some Trek novels to be dry reading. Don’t know why. I think the main reason is, the characters don’t EVOLVE, which is one of the prime reaasons for fictional stories, to show the evolution of a character as s/he is influenced by, and takes action with regard to, events.

Why are there no novels set in the new Chris Pine/Kirk universe?
