Surprisingly for the notoriously hard to please masses of the Internet, the announcement that Bryan Fuller, known for his work on Star Trek Deep Space Nine and Star Trek Voyager, will be the new showrunner for Star Trek All Access was met with resounding positivity. Perhaps it is his known track record writing for Trek, or maybe it’s his lifelong fandom of the series.

“My very first experience of ‘Star Trek’ is my oldest brother turning off all the lights in the house and flying his model of a D7 Class Klingon Battle Cruiser through the darkened halls. Before seeing a frame of the television series, the ‘Star Trek’ universe lit my imagination on fire. It is without exaggeration a dream come true to be crafting a brand new iteration of ‘Star Trek’ with fellow franchise alum Alex Kurtzman and boldly going where no ‘Star Trek’ series has gone before.”

Whatever it is, Trekkies are filled with a new hope (to quote the wrong franchise) for the upcoming television series debuting on CBS All Access January 2017.

Fuller has written two episodes of DS9 and 20 episodes of Voyager:

DS9:

  • “The Darkness and the Light” (story)
  • “Empok Nor” (story)

VOY:

  • “The Raven” (teleplay, story with Harry “Doc” Kloor)
  • “Mortal Coil”
  • “Retrospect” (teleplay with Lisa Klink)
  • “Living Witness” (teleplay with Brannon Braga & Joe Menosky)
  • “Drone” (teleplay with Braga & Menosky, story with Kloor)
  • “Gravity” (teleplay with Nick Sagan, story with Jimmy Diggs & Sagan)
  • “Bride of Chaotica!” (teleplay with Michael Taylor, story)
  • “Course: Oblivion” (teleplay with Sagan, story)
  • “Juggernaut” (teleplay with Sagan & Kenneth Biller, story)
  • “Relativity” (teleplay with Sagan & Taylor)
  • “Barge of the Dead” (teleplay, story with Ronald D. Moore)
  • “Alice” (teleplay with Taylor)
  • “One Small Step” (teleplay with Mike Wollaeger, Jessica Scott & Taylor)
  • “Spirit Folk”
  • “Fury” (teleplay with Taylor)
  • “The Haunting of Deck Twelve” (teleplay with Mike Sussman & Biller)
  • “Flesh and Blood” (Part I – teleplay, story with Jack Monaco & Raf Green; Part II – story with Green)
  • “Workforce” (with Biller)
  • “Workforce, Part II” (story with Biller)

What do we know?
Basically nothing. Don’t get us wrong, this announcement is a huge piece of news concerning the new show. But, so far all we can do is speculate on what the content of that show will be. Here are a couple of nuggets that might give us a couple of clues:

1. Which universe?
We cannot say unequivocally which universe (prime, JJ/neu, or other) the new series will be set in. But, one quote did seem to imply that, in the very least, it will be a setting that we haven’t seen before. Does this imply a new universe? An unexplored time period or location in either the prime or neu timelines?

“The creative plan is for the series to introduce new characters and civilizations, existing outside of the mythology charted by previous series and the current movie franchise.”

2. The cast of characters
Of course there have been no cast (or character) announcements yet. But, Bryan Fuller said in a 2013 interview that he would like to see Captain Angela Bassett and First Officer Rosario Dawson on his Star Trek crew.

Will we be graced with the presence of First Officer Rosario Dawson?

And, a special tid bit from the show…
Triumph the insult comic dog takes on Brent Spiner! The best part? Marina Sirtis cracking up in the background at the end!

Ref: casting. Tony Todd mentioned the other day that he’s on a short list for this new series, any ideas about that?

Super interesting, isn’t it? I think he’d be a great choice! The interview was ambiguous, though. Hopefully we will be able to reach someone for official comment. Until then, it’s an exciting rumor! Hat tip to TrekCore for jumping on it!

Trekmovie, I get that headlines are important, but this is your second misleading headline in a row on Fuller. As others pointed out, you last Fuller story headline gave the impression the Bryan was talking about his five favorite Trek episodes (“Bryan Fuller’s Top 5 Trek Episodes”) — which actually, was a story on your opinion of his episodes. Now, this story’s headline gives the impression you are interviewing Fuller (“Meet Bryan Fuller”) — when it’s another story about you at Trekmovie analyzing him.

just saying…

It was not my intent to deceive. This episode is a breakdown of what we know about Bryan and what that means for the new Trek series. We wanted to get to know him by dissecting his relationship to Trek and his endeavors since then. I take any blame for being misleading.

That sounds fine — a misunderstanding. Thanks!

Just a note, that quote about “outside of the mythology” was *not* a quote from the press release – but added to the report by the author of the Variety article.

That’s a great point. I think Variety took some liberty with that phrase. I’m cautiously optimistic that this will be in the Prime Universe based on comments in the official press release about Fuller’s “encyclopedic” understanding of the Trek canon.
