Comic-Con 2019: ‘Star Trek: Discovery’ Season 3 and ‘Short Treks’ News

Fresh news from Comic-Con:

When the USS Discovery arrives in the future, they are not where they are supposed to be and are in big trouble.

The season premiere was shot in Iceland, not unlike how season one’s premiere went on location to Jordan. Iceland has unique terrain which makes it a favorite region to use for sci-fi productions.

Alex Kurtzman said there are a ton of new characters in season 3: “We are building a future that is complicated… but our focus is always on our characters.”

David Ajala (Manchester Black on Supergirl) has joined the cast for season 3. Deadline was given the first photo of Ajala in costume, and a tiny bit more information. He will play a new character named Cleveland Booker (aka Book).

Smart and capable, Ajala’s Book has a natural charisma and devil-may-care attitude that tends to get him into trouble as often as it gets him out.

2019 season of ‘Short Treks’

Official logo for Star Trek: Short Treks

As we found out last month, there was at least one Short Treks coming with the Enterprise crew. Today during the Discovery section of the Star Trek Universe panel Alex Kurtzman revealed that of the 6 new shorts coming, and three will feature the Pike-era crew of the USS Enterprise! One has Spock and Number One stuck in a turbolift, and is written by Michael Chabon. Another of the shorts set on the Pike-era Enterprise has tribbles and guest star H. Jon Benjamin (Archer, Bob’s Burgers). Another stars Anson Mount as Captain Pike.

Of the remaining three shorts, one will be a teaser of sorts for Star Trek: Picard, showing the backstory that leads into the series. The final 2 shorts are the animated episodes previously announced.

While we may not the plot details of each episode, the titles of all six shorts were released today, they are:

“Ask Not,” “Q&A,” “The Trouble with Edward,” “The Girl Who Made the Stars,” “Ephaim and Dot” and “Children of Mars.”

WHO IS PIKE ADDRESSING AS CAPTAIN

but really love how they are expanding on these short trek stories and that they will be using one to give backstory for Picard. So far, seems like they are doing a nice job weaving all this together as a “universe” of media

Maybe it’s Robert April :D

Lets analyze this to death, shall we :D

It may be someone fans are familiar with because its a legit tease to show that scene and not showing the character. On the one hand, Captain April is even more of an ominous Figure to casual watches than Pike, on the other hand, they used Pike after all.

It cant really be Captain Kirk, the time frame does not add up. I don`t think, they are already at a point where they casually reintroduce him, although they did it with Spock. But not like that. Not in a “throwaway” or “nod to the fans” scene.

There are not much more prominent figures I can think of… maybe Captain Garth. Maybe the original Captain Lorca before he was thrown into the MU. Probably not.

PS: The most sensical for casual watchers of Discovery would indeed be Captain Georgiou… the Disc and the Ent already had a crossover in those tie in novels, didn´t they?

Has to be Kirk. The unis are from the TOS era. Probably the change of command from Pike to Kirk

I don’t think it’s either Kirk or April. I think it’s either the female captain of the ship who discovered the tribbles OR it’s Number One getting promoted.

My hope is the last one. I still want a 1701 spinoff with Peck as Spock, set pre-Kirk. If Mount does not want to return as captain full time, they could very easily have Number One take command while he’s away on some mission.

This could then set him up to be a recurring guest star in said spinoff.

She can’t. The command of the E was April,Pike, and Kirk. Acting captain can work if he’s on a away mission for a long period of time

Picard’s Dog

The woman who was in Alita Battle Angel is playing a Starfleet Captain. You can see it’s obviously a female with the same haircut that he’s addressing when he says good luck out there Captain. Also looks to be in the Enterprise transporter room – she’s probably beaming back to her ship.

You see the Captain first at 1:07 and then the conversation seems to start at 1:19, same transporter room at 1:31 which looks to be the conclusion of their conversation.

Oh damn this sounds like a lot of fun.
But the “nothing ever happens in Star Trek off-screen” canonistas are going to have an aneurism about the Tribble Shirt Trek.

These look delicious! I can’t wait.

I am the only one who is geeking out over the fact that they at least put some of the officers into “The Cage” style uniforms? Like with colored “turtle neck” collars? I really wanted/expected that style for Discovery! They just should have sticked with that and get rid of the over the top gold and bronze applications.

In addition, that transporter room is a close to the original as they probably could pull off while sticking to the over modernized chrome look. Kudos!!!

… and maybe, just maybe. there is a “Cage” style laser pistol at 1:17 with the cylindric barrel?… XD

Apparently so, because even if that’s what they’re intended to be, those high collared uni’s look nothing like the ones from the cage. They look more like the uniforms from Star Trek Beyond.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW WOW YES YES YES YES YES YES YES So excited about the Short Treks! That looks amazing. Pike series now please!

How can you have an episode called Q&A and not have John deLancie cameo?

If you put a gun to my head, i’d wager this is the Picard episode, that takes place shortly before the new series, with Q questioning Picard on what he’s been up to the last 20 years. A simple two-way conversation. A way of recapping everything for the audience while revisiting a fan favorite character, and one that is sure to dazzle the camera with his chemistry with Strewart.

Ensign Spock? That can be interesting.

The Short Treks look great. Just hope the Enterprise ones aren’t “instead of” a more long term show. I’d like a Pike series, mini series, limited series – anything.

I think they really utilize the short treks as testing field for new concepts and shows – which is not only rather smart but also very logical. So, if the “Discoprise” short treks are received well, the chance for a Pike series really rises….

To be honest, I think they’ve likely already decided to go forward with a 1701 series, and these Short Treks are a way of setting up that series, ie: giving background on how Spock joined the crew, the relationship between he and Number One, etc. Not necessary, but a good foundation so the series can just hit the ground running as they say.

Similar to the way the last set of Short Treks helped provide background for elements that came into play in DSC’s second season.

As exciting as these shorts sound, I can only envy those fans stateside where all the content is on the CBSAA service. How is this going to work in the UK? If one of the shorts is a Picard focused prequel, but the others are Discovery linked, could it be that the shorts will be split across streaming services? Star Trek: Short Treks – a programme currently on Netflix in the UK, could end up having one of it’s episodes on a rival streamer – it’s madness. I’m still kind of shocked Amazon Prime got Picard in the UK if I’m honest. It’s not so much an issue of money and paying for two services, but it just seems so messy when the content CBS is putting out is clearly originating from a single unified place.

This is so illogical, for a network that wants to appeal to people all over the world. Sorry for my pals in the UK and EUR.

I guess — ahem — “special measures” for access will be called for.

Ironic they call it CBS All Access ….

Oh, man. I am absolutely giddy. Can’t think of a better word. They look like a lot of fun.

How will this work internationally with Discovery on Netflix and Picard on Amazon?

Ecstatic to know that Pike’s Enterprise will have 3 Short Treks, and that they will reach back in time.

There’s so much ground to fill in, it sounds like they’ll be great fun, and provide a lot to keep us going.

And it sounds as though there is a sincere exploration of something more happening.

Now, if only Space.ca and Crave would get the trailer up….

David Ajala was superb in SyFy’s Nightflyers. Looking forward to seeing him on Discovery.

For those of us not in the USA!!!

Really looking forward to these. However, -Ensign- Spock is wearing the supposedly ‘new uniform’. HMMM.

Yeah, I was about to post the same thing. I think it’s a joke or something.

Wonder if the revised uniform is supposed to be older i.e. closer to Cage or newer. Interesting they are in service concurrent to the Pike uniform.

Also the Captain Pike addresses is clearly the lady who said the tribbles are cute, she has captain rank braids.

Very excited the one with Spock and Number One looks a lot of fun!

Okay. Those looked like lots of fun.

The international rights for these will be interesting. The Enterprise stuff will be considered a spin off of Discovery, so Netflix will likely get first dibs, but if one is based on Picard, then obviously Amazon will want it.

“Ummm. So furry! It tickles.”

I’m sincerely trying to wrap my head around that, especially as the young actor is in a science uniform.

They certainly weren’t she to use a lot of actors in these Short Treks.

Maybe she’s not human? Maybe she is a species that eats tribbles.

She doesn’t look like a glommer, though…

Tribbles in the Pike era Enterprise is PRECISELY why I don’t like prequels.

I believe the tributes will destroy the ship like a horror Comedy Short story

I’m actually shocked how little responses this has gotten so far to know we are getting THREE Pike specific Short Treks and brand new footage at that. I guess if this was released ANY other day this would pretty big news to see the gang back together so quickly again. But its hard to get any bigger than the Borg in the Trek world….but tribbles can stand on their own. ;)

I’m guessing (like many) Q&A is bringing back the one and only Q. PLEASE make it so!!!!!!!

Anyway this all looks and sounds great! It’s pretty excited with all the Trek news today to know we are getting a bunch of Pike stories again. I can’t wait for all of it, from Pike to Seven to the 24th and 32nd century, Short Treks to Lower Decks, its going to be a freakin fun and interesting year for us Star Trek fans!

I did like the reference to Spock shouting when he arrives on the Enterprise. Nice reference to WNMGB where he is shouting on the bridge!

Holy shit, Ethan Peck looks ridiculous as clean shaven Spock. With the longer hair and beard less noticeable, but now… I can’t look at him without thinking that is a teenager cosplaying.

I’m forced to admit, I’m fascinated with these. Not keen on the idea of doing another tribble show. But maybe it will work. Anyway, again none of these will make me fork over my $10 to CBS before the next series starts, however. But I am looking forward to seeing them.
