VW Germany Teases Shatner & Nimoy Star Trek-themed ‘#vwfuture’ campaign

Last Friday, the VW Germany Facebook page posted the following Star Trek-themed image, with the message "We greet our fans on Earth – and also on the planet Vulcan. #vwfuture."

On Saturday they followed it up with another Star Trek-themed image and the message "The answer from the Vulcans didn’t take long. Welcome to the #vwfuture!"

And then yesterday VW Germany posted a 30 second video featuring people trying to do the Vulcan salute, Star Trek music and glimpses of William Shatner and Leonard Nimoy (wearing v-neck sweaters matching their original command gold and science blue Star Trek uniforms). The video hints there will be more on October 3rd.

And if it wasn’t clear enough, earlier today Volkswagen Germany posted this image with the Starfleet logo and the message "There are innovative technoogoes not only in space and in the future. It’s already on Earth. Stay tuned! #vwfuture"

TrekMovie is told that the planned "vwfuture" campaign is currently limited to Germany, but could expand to the rest of Europe and the US.

Not Nimoy’s first time with VW

Fans may remember that back in 2008 Leonard Nimoy did a commercial for VW USA for their campaign promoting the new Beetle. Watch that below.

And last year Nimoy teamed up with the new Spock Zacnhary Quinto for a very popular viral web ad for Audi (a subsidiary of the Volkswagen Group).

At least the marketing people at VW know how to do a proper Vulcan salute!

(For the “V”, not the “W”.) ;)

This is cool…for the last couple of years, I’ve collected yellowish and blue V-neck sweaters (no red ones though) to wear them exactly like Nimoy and Shatner in that spot with a black tee or shirt under them…TOS uniform style… Now, we’re going full circle :)

perhaps the guy from badassdigest got his ‘rumor’ about trek 3 from this and was trying to be funny

That’s it—they’re both gonna be in the next movie.

This combined with Orci’s non-denial, woe is me, I just can’t win comment is confirmation.

Shatner and Nimoy, together again, on the big screen, in 2016.

@4. Cygnus-X1

I hope so.

The longer commercial with Zach and Leonard is awesome — everything’s there, and more. The neck pinch near the end was a complete surprise, LOL! Bravo, everyone, on this one. It’s a keeper.

Just hoping…
Will know in May 2016.

Shatner does seem to be thinner in that first pic… Just sayin’

This is ALL fun. Volkswagen is great. When I was a kid, I really thought the fumbled Kirk salute was a proper response to the vulcan salute done by Spock on the protective barrier in engineering in TWOK. They seemed to fit together. Now, seeing Wolkswagen treating it like it is… wow. They’ve just validated all my “silly” boyhood dreams. Big stuff, guys.. big stuff :)

A few old, beloved, and genuinely charming faces would be so great for the 50th. Make it so, Orci :) Thank you.

Can’t say I’m completely against seeing Shat and Nimoy together again on the bridge of the Enterprise. And this seems to add a bit more credibility to the rumor.

But can we be clear now? The reboot universe was never about totally breaking free from the old canon, as was claimed with the 2009 movie. For better or worse, it’s a way to celebrate (and yes, cash in) on TOS nostalgia. Khan in the last one. Old Kirk… maybe… in the next one…? Sure looks that way.

This makes this Trekkie (and Touareg owner) smile…

@10 (Vultan): Actually, it was, as in “new timeline, new stories” without sacrificing elements from the previous timeline that could be “revamped”. Problem is that fans tend to want the same things that they are comfortable with, hence the inclusion of Khan in STiD. Unfortunately, it also backfired.

@12 Sure it backfired – into a critically acclaimed box office smash.

Star Trek Lives

I submit that the return of Shatner and Nimoy is all but reinforced with this. Further, since SW is featuring the return of Ford, Hamill, and Fisher it follows that Trek would follow suit with the original Kirk and Spock for one last adventure.

I foresee:

Picard retrieves Kirk from the nexus in search of Nimoy Spock to return him to his proper timeline. End movie with Spock and Kirk flanked by aged Takei, Nichols, and Koenig as a homage to the first Star Trek III!

Further, since SW is featuring the return of Ford, Hamill, and Fisher it follows that Trek would follow suit with the original Kirk and Spock for one last adventure.

Yes! Son of Sarek, Yes! How could I have missed this?

This is true.

This, not really. There was no significant fan demand for Khan to be in the second movie. In fact, prior to the leak about it, there was no significant discussion of it that I can remember—not at this site, anyway.

Could this be a precursor to the marketing behind the new movie, 50th anniversary and Shatners role in the new movie. Or does VW simply have some crazy new tech that no other car company has? Some crazy car, 100% electric, with multiple regenerative qualities, unlimited range, never have to charge it. Would be nice to give a big middle finger to the oil companies.

@1. Alt-Spock. No doubt. For too often people make the salute and keep the thumb in or fold it down. THE THUMB HAS TO POINT OUTWARD!

@4. Cygnus-X1. Don’t you just love Orci’s non-denial and non-conformation regarding such things.

Watching ‘This Side of Paradise” as I type this. “Would you like to see just how fast I can put you in a hospital” – Leonard McCoy.

A reality tv show, with all of the Trek actors filmed like this would be sooooooo interesting.

:)

I’m glad to hear that Mr. Nimoy’s health is good enough to allow him to participate in things like this.

That Audi commercial was so much fun. I’m glad they found a way to let the old man win, even though his car wasn’t up to snuff. :-)

Re: The Challenge add that is,,

How far we’ve come when 2 Jewish men can do a commercial for a company started by the order of Adolf…

Not a sarcastic dig, I’m actually pleased by the progress.

Very Cool!!!

I love Trek, & I love Volkswagens. Awesome mash up!!! I’mm in nirvana – lol
