San Diego Comic-con kicks off this week. With the next Star Trek movie two years away and still in scripting, we don’t expect to have any formal presentation from Paramount, however there are tons of Star Trek-related panels and booths to check out. TrekMovie has compiled an all-inclusive list of every Trek related item on the agenda for this year’s big con – get it all below.
This weekend composer Michael Giacchino brings his “Star Trek Live in Concert” screenings of Star Trek and Star Trek Into Darkness with a full orchestra to the USA, performing with the Houston Symphony. Next weekend he does it again at San Diego Comic Con and then moves on to Philadelphia at the end of the month and more cities after that. More details below.
Over the weekend Simon Pegg made a somewhat rare con appearance at Fantasycon in Utah. The new Scotty actor talked about a number of things during his panel, including working on the Star Trek movies. Watch highlights from his talk below.
UPDATE: We’ve got another new photo of Chris Doohan as Scotty! Check it out. TrekMovie is excited to bring you the title of the upcoming Star Trek Continues episode, “Fairest of Them All” and exclusive shots of the cast in Mirror Universe uniform. The new episode, written by James Kerwin & Vic Mignogna and directed by James Kerwin, will take place in the mirror universe. The story picks up where The Original Series episode “Mirror, Mirror” left off and tells the story of what happened to the mirror landing party after returning to the I.S.S. Enterprise. The episode is set to release June 15 at Supanova in Sydney, Australia, and will be available on Vimeo and YouTube the same day worldwide. Also lookout for a behind the scenes documentary dedicated to the making of “Fairest of Them All”. We are also thrilled to announce a TrekMovie.com special event. Kicking off the big Creation convention in Las Vegas, this July 31st (Thursday night — Friday morning) TrekMovie.com presents a FREE midnight screening of “Fairest of Them All” with a Q&A session with cast and crew after the show, including Vic Mignogna (Kirk), Chris Doohan (Scotty), Asia DeMarcos (Marlena), Kipleigh Brown (Smith), plus James Kerwin and several members of the crew, and a special appearance by Michael Dorn! Geek Nation Tours has been delighting traveling nerds on their Trek-themed tour from Hollywood, through a plethora of Trek filming locations in the California desert, and culminating in Las Vegas just in time for the annual Creation Convention held every August. Larry “Dr. Trek” Nemecek, the noted Star Trek guru, consultant, interviewer, producer and author of the Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion and Star Trek: Stellar Cartography, will be there as always to guide fans through the tour and impart his encyclopedic knowledge of all things Trek (both in front of and behind the scenes). This year, Vegas-bound fans unable to join in on the full tour can get a taste of the adventure by booking a one-day tour to the site of Captain James T. Kirk’s heroic death on Veridian III (Star Trek Generations), which is located in the majestic Valley of Fire State Park 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas. The trip is taking bookings now but is selling out fast with only 7 of the 12 seats still up for grabs.
It is with a heavy heart that I report the passing of Thomas Deishley, known to Trek fans as General Motog from Star Trek: The Experience in Las Vegas. Deishley was found dead in his home in Las Vegas from an apparent gun shot wound. He was found during a welfare check after friends reported that they had not been able to get a hold of him for several days. Police say there was evidence of a break-in. Friend of Deishley and Star Trek: The Experience historian Vernon Wilmer recently posted a video tribute to Tom. Click more to see it, but have your tissues ready.
Imagine this scenario: A massive ship rests in its dock as the crew prepares for departure. Orders are given and acknowledged. A course is laid. Whistles echo through the decks. Dock lines fall to the side, and the ship clears the last mooring. What happens next? Is this a warship cutting through ocean waves headed for the Mediterranean? Or is this a starship disappearing in a warp speed flash of light headed for strange new worlds? Their missions may be entirely different but similarities between today’s military and Star Trek’s Starfleet remain evident. On the program of Creation Entertainment’s Star Trek Convention Las Vegas last month, a panel of veterans presented and discussed military aspects of Star Trek and similarities between Starfleet and the armed forces.
It took two separate panels to accommodate the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine 20th Anniversary Reunion at Creation Entertainment’s Las Vegas convention August 11. Creation assembled a nearly complete cast of 16 DS9 main cast members for the commemorative event. And in between panels, when writer-producer Ira Steven Behr walked on stage with the cast, the scene brought hundreds of camera flashes in Rio Resort and Casino’s main theater. You don’t have to be a die-hard DS9 fan to appreciate these increasingly rare convention reunion moments. Fans, actors — even sideline observers can’t help but get a little choked up. Who knows when, where or if an ensemble like this will be on the same stage together again?
Amid chants of “USA! USA!” and with a surprise entrance by Terry Farrell (Jadzia Dax on Star Trek: Deep Space 9), Star Trek Las Vegas fans Saturday night recaptured the Guinness World Record for most Star Trek costumes in one location for the USA. They did it with plenty of time and a few Trekkies left to spare.
Star Trek Las Vegas is coming up fast! Do you remember your first Star Trek Convention? If you were like me (a convention newbie in 2011), for your first convention you wanted just three things: to see everything, do everything and know everything. In an attempt to be the most prepared as possible for my first convention, I searched the Internet for any advice or tips I could find for Trek convention-goers. Some of you may remember asking the same questions: Do I need to wear a Starfleet uniform? Do I need to dress up as a Klingon? Do I need to learn the Klingon language? Do I need to eat gagh, drink blood wine and participate in mating rituals? (Okay, maybe not the last one.) Well, this blog post is NOT an attempt to answer those questions, but I can offer a few tips to those who are new to the convention. And these tips may be useful to those of you who are ‘con veterans’ but are new to next week’s event, which runs August 8-11.
Thousands of Star Trek fans will be convening in Las Vegas in August again, to listen to celebrity panels, bid on memorabilia, attend planetary science discussions, stand in lines for autographs and photo ops, and debate the merits of the latest Star Trek motion picture. And again this year, they will attempt to break a Guinness World Record for most people dressed in Star Trek costumes at one location. Hit the jump to learn more about the record attempt and its history.
At the Berlin Star Trek Into Darkness premiere the celebrities spent most of their time taking pictures, being interviewed for the live webcast and talking to the big national TV press. But a few took a moment to stop by TrekMovie.com’s spot to just say before being whisked away by the PR people. See the video below for JJ and stars sending a greeting to TrekMovie readers.
Last night we reported on footage from Star Trek Into Darkness from CinemaCon 2013 in Las Vegas. We now have video of Damon Lindelof, Chris Pine, Alice Eve, Zachary Quinto and John Cho talking about the movie before they showed the footage. Watch that below plus some interview clips with the group.
Tonight in London Paramount partnered up with the WWF to participate in their "Earth Hour" event with a special Star Trek Into Darkness lightshow featuring the Starfleet Logo hovering and rotating in the London night sky. See pictures and video from London below. [UPDATE: Official Paramount Event Video Added]
Another weekend and another convention with a Star Trek: The Next Generation cast reunion (or mini-reunion). Over this last weekend four TNG stars (Brent Spiner, LeVar Burton, Michael Dorn and Denise Crosby) held a panel at the MegaCon in Orlando, FL. The whole panel is available online. Watch it below.
Last night Star Trek: The Next Generation stars Patrick Stewart, Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden reunited on stage at Toronto Comic-Con. Highlights of the event can be seen online including Stewart and Burton kissing and Frakes and Stewart trading impressions of each other’s TNG characters. Watch the highlights below.
William Shatner is getting ready to take his Shatner’s World Tour into 2013 and in a new interview promoting his next stop (in Aurora, IL) Bill gave some more details on his upcoming Star Trek: TNG documentary and he also paid a compliment to Star Trek Into Darkness director JJ Abrams (while at the same offering what might be seen as some combination of advice and a critique as well).
Following the success of their 2012 Hollywood to Vegas tour, Geek Nation Tours has announced the August 2013 edition of their Trekkie tour that follows Trek sites around Hollywood and LA area and beyond into Nevada — with some special guests along the way – and ending at the annual Creation Star Trek convention in Las Vegas. Geek Nation has once again teamed up with Larry “Dr. Star Trek” Nemecek, who will be leading the tour group. Get more details below and an exclusive photo from the 2012 tour.
Once again residents of Portlandia have a chance to spend their weekends in a park and watch live Star Trek. This year Atomic Arts is taking their "Journey to Babel." Watch a video report below.
On Friday at the Vegas con fans got a great mix with very interesting behind the scenes panels with writer/producer Ira Steven Behr and producer/director David Livingston, along with fun celebrity panels, including a joint panel with the Enterprise pair of Dominic Keating and Connor Trinneer, plus Diana Muldaur, and a giant panel of guest stars from various Star Trek series. See below for more details and photos.
