Reading Rainbow Kickstarter funding with Trek alumni June 13, 2014

by Matt Wright , Filed under: Celebrity,Trek on TV,Web , comments closed

As we reported a couple of weeks ago LeVar Burton had started a Kickstarter fund to bring back beloved children’s show Reading Rainbow. It made their first goal of funding within a day, but the need for funding isn’t over, in an update this week Burton announced that he has enlisted Trek alumni to help him read stories, there will be exclusive Reading Rainbow Live! events for Kickstarter  pledges.

Reading Rainbow Live! is a series of one-time-only events where I’m inviting you to bring your child and join us for a few hours. My friends and I will read from a few children’s books. We’ll all watch a classic episode of Reading Rainbow together, and everyone will go home with some special goodies. And afterward, there will also be a smaller Meet & Greet reception where a small number of families can join us to take photos, sign autographs and talk!

The first performance will feature the “Men of Star Trek,” which include: Jonathan Frakes, Brent Spiner, Michael Dorn, and Robert Picardo. The second performance is themed as the “Women of Star Trek,” with Marina Sirtis and Gates McFadden, Jeri Ryan and Kate Mulgrew appearing. There are also two special solo performances planned, one with William Shatner and one with Patrick Stewart. All of the live readings will be Los Angeles, except for Patrick Stewart’s, which will be held in New York City.

Read on for the full details.

Sorry, Netflix & CBS Not in Talks To Produce New Show June 10, 2014

by Brian Drew , Filed under: CBS/Paramount,Rumor,Trek on TV , comments closed

A new story is making the rounds claiming that, while at Phoenix Comicon this past weekend,  author Larry Nemecek (Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion, Star Trek Stellar Cartography) revealed that Netflix and CBS are “in talks” regarding a new Star Trek series.  The story made a big splash, since it’s not so crazy to think that Netflix, who has hit it big with recent original shows Orange is the New Black and House of Cards, would look to Star Trek, one of its top performers in streaming TV, for a new series. In a blog post on his web site, Nemecek refutes the story:

…this non-bylined writer known only as “Starfleet Intelligence” is too wrapped up in tossing around jazzy phrases of TheBizSpeak in this post, and has the situation blown up way too big —though it makes a nice screaming headline…it’s in Netflix’s interest to be casting about for new shows—including those from known franchises. I understand Star Trek is one of them—especially as Trek’s 737 hours of “reruns” performs as a top draw ON Netflix. As I understand it, there have been overtures.  But none taken. So far.

It is a bittersweet ending, going out on a high note, but it’s sad to think that this is the last TV series of the entire franchise, canceled after only four seasons. What we have in this final season is generally very good, we are treated to excellent multi-part story arcs about the Eugenics Wars, Vulcans, Andorians, Orions, and Klingons (oh my!) plus the mirror universe is revisited one last time. Read on for the review of the excellent Season 4 Blu-ray set.

Happy Birthday. Surely, the best of times. March 26, 2014

by Brian Drew , Filed under: Celebrity,Nimoy,Shatner,This Week In Trek,TOS,Trek Franchise , comments closed

It is the beginning of spring here in the Western Hemisphere, which means it’s time to celebrate the birthdays of Trek royalty.

Today is the 83rd birthday of Spock Prime himself, Leonard Nimoy. Mr. Nimoy, who recently disclosed that he has a smoking-related illness called COPD isn’t letting anything slow him down. It was announced recently that he will be hosting two special “space-themed” performances by the Boston Pops in May, featuring music from many science fiction classics, including, of course, Star Trek. More information, including ticket prices, can be found at The Boston Pops website.

Mr. Nimoy took to Twitter to mark the day and to thank everyone for their good wishes:

IDW to publish new ongoing TOS title from John Byrne March 10, 2014

by Brian Drew , Filed under: Comics,TOS , comments closed

This spring, IDW Publishing will launch a new, bi-monthly TOS comic, and TrekMovie has the details.
Last December, IDW released Star Trek Annual 2013, a “photonovel”-style story from legendary comic book writer/artist John Byrne, set during The Original Series and a sequel to “Where No Man Has Gone Before”.   Taking stills from the series, Byrne utilized digital technology to place the characters in a brand new story:

What John does on these photonovel stories is nothing short of amazing,” said Chris Ryall, IDW’s Chief Creative Office/Editor-in-Chief. “He’s moved far beyond photo-manipulation and montage to constructing his own set pieces, uniforms, and characters. Much more than just comic stories, these tales are the closest thing to Original Series-era ‘lost episodes’ that the world will ever see.
