Today Patrick Stewart turned 68, and he is still going strong. TNG’s Picard recently finished his Tony-nominated Broadway run in Macbeth and is now preparing for Hamlet where he will play Claudius across from David Tennent (Doctor Who) as Hamlet. This weekend Hallmark stores are having their annual Keepsake Ornament premiere parties, and Star Trek is invited. Available now are two of the three Trek themed ornaments for 2008 (a third will be available this October). Scott Bakula has joined the cast of the new TNT drama Men of a Certain Age, which will be his first time as a TV series regular since the cancellation of Star Trek Enterprise in 2005. Bakula will play Terry, a handsome, intelligent but struggling-to-make-it actor, opposite Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Andre Braugher (Homicide: Life on the Street).
Robert Picardo spent seven years as the holographic Doctor on Star Trek Voyager. According Nichelle Nichols, the original Uhura, there was talk about her getting a cameo role in the new Star Trek movie. Nichols, who has previously spoken enthusiastically about visiting the movie set and meeting both the new Uhura (Zoe Saldana) and director JJ Abrams, made this new revaluation Saturday at the Supernova Pop Culture Expo in Perth Australia.
Exit Patrick Stewart and enter Kate Mulgrew, look out New York another Star Trek captain is headed to Broadway. Today it was announced that Kate Mulgrew (Voyager – Capt. Janeway) has been cast in the Broadway revival of Equus which starts its 22 week run in September. Mulgrew is the first American cast for the US run, joining Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter series) and Richard Griffiths (History Boys) who are reprising their roles from the London run of the play.

Since TrekMovie first reported the abrupt demise of FedCon USA last weekend, there has been much debated and discussed during the postmortem. Although the failure of FedCon USA unfortunate, it is worth highlighting how the actors who showed up, especially Star Trek Enterprise’s John Billingsley (along with his wife Bonita), went above and beyond to make the best of a bad situation. As such, we’re going to do a quick review and summary on each of four recent Trek comics: the second "Assignment Earth", then the third "New Frontier", the second "Enterprise Experiment", and closing it all out with the final issue in the "Intelligence Gathering" series.
Today was the first day for California to issue marriage licenses for same-sex couples and George Takei, along with his partner Brad Altman, were literally the first in line to pick one up for their September wedding. This week there is a lot of new project news coming from producers who have worked on Trek. Star Trek director/producer JJ Abrams has bought the rights to make a movie about a ‘mysterious’ apartment. Voyager writer/producer Kenneth Biller has signed on to be the showrunner on a new fantasy TV series with Enterprise writer/producer Mike Sussman in talks to help out. And TNG/DS9 writer/producer Hans Beimler’s new show premiered last night.
The new issue of the official Star Trek Magazine has an extensive interview with Star Trek co-writers and exec. producers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman. The pair talk about their fandom, favorite Trek books and more, but of particular interest was a discussion on why they chose to do a movie in the pre TOS era and also a bit on the Shat.
On Sunday night both of Trek’s most famous captains could be seen on TV award shows. Stewart was a nominee at the live broadcast on CBS of the Tony Awards (he lost…awww), and William Shatner was seen presenting an award at a taped broadcast of the TV Land Land Awards (um…on TV Land).
