Great movie!
Yaeyah!! That movie was awesome! Posted reviews on new sticky article (post 157 & 195).
@2 LG, I really agreed with yr review on the latest thread. And Karen, in the first thread, around #66, had some stunning things to say about the death scene.
I sure am tired of some people saying how dumb and lemming-like we who like the new Trek are. I’m a long-time fan of ST and I like the new Trek – does that make me stupid?
No – because Orci and Kurtzman write very well about characters and flesh them out in very little screen time.
Wonder where the previous Chat thread went to …?
@3. Marja: it vanished into what we call a Into Darkness Hole. One of countless plot holes floating around the galaxy left by STID ;p
@3 Marja
I’ll have to try to find that other thread (still scratching my head over where that went). I read your comment on the newest thread and concur with you!
Not speaking of those who have honest critiques and concerns, but of those who are very negative just to be spiteful- they try to get their words in first because they know they’ll catch some heat in the end. So they’re trying to set the inital tone of the conversation first, hoping that people will kind of dog pile on top of that (if that makes any sense!). That’s what I think, anyway.
Also, some are just dog-determined to hate this movie AND the direction behind it. Even before seeing it, some of them hated it. So really what can you do…? *pulls out hidden bat’leth*
@5. LizardGirl:
Most were and still are determined to love it and the direction behind it before seeing it and still after that, no matter how big their confusion and complaints are.
Even after a key writer had to come on here to explain everything and what actually happened in the film ha ha ha.
So what’s your point?
Look’s like Live Chat has gone into Transwarp.
OK, new contest. A ride in Harry Mudd’s confiscated ship from that mining incident last month… to whoever can tell me where in the movie we saw Del J. Trame (BND) honored…
Now, shall we begin?
CmdrR. I did not see it. But. Did you see it. I will be seeing Star Trek Again tomorrow. So I will look for it once again.
Ok. Let’s have some real fun.
Insert Joke about Harry and Ericka Durance here.
Ok. Who has the first Harry and Ericka Durance Joke.
http://www.aintitcool.com/node/62468
Makes some very sound points. I guess I’ve just given up hoping that big box franchise movies will be more than calculation based on box office receipts of the past. But that IS how movies get made. JJ is a businessman. Again, though, I think the movie did its job. It was a fun night in the theater and a pretty strong indicator that ST IIIJ is on the way.
@10
Harry: “Hey, did you hear about how Erica Durance got a mudpack done on her face? It improved her looks for a few days, then the mudpack fell off!”
Erica: “That is NOT funny!”
Well I saw it. I thought it was just as good as the first one.
Harry how about this Erica Durance should have played Carol Marcus.
However, now I can see why JJ likes secrecy about his movies.
STID $35 Million so far.

@15. Yep, shaping up to be a disappointing opening now. A bittersweet victory for those of us who warned that WOK 2.0 might be a mistake…
The webcomic Cloud Five by Tim Harrison (no relation to John) :) weighs in on the new film in a 3-part series this week. Here’s part 2:
http://cloudfivecomic.com/comic/102-quality-counts
The previous strip friskily harkens back to DS9 geekdom, and Part 3 shows the characters at an Into Darkness screening.
Phil, they are contracted to do three right? Do they get paid anyway if they don’t do a third one? If they don’t do a third one then the TV series is off and Trek is put to bed for a long time right? I wonder if JJ will be so focused on SW they will forget about doing a third? Or they would want a third one because of 50th Anniversary and the new SW movie?
@ Mitchell
Well, my point was addressed to Marja, specificaly, who said she was tired of others grouping people who like STID as dumb and immature movie-goers. So if you took something a little too personal from my comment, I do (not) apologize. Lolz
@19. Bad Robot has a ‘first look’ contract with Paramount, which was extended through 2015. Basically, JJ has the right of first refusal for anything Paramount wants to do. Paramount’s Trek deal was for three pictures, but I suspect Paramount holds the option on whether to proceed or not. So, no pay if the third installment is not made.
A story floating around about why JJ did the about face on Star Wars was that he was trying to corral the TV, merchandising, and movie rights, and failed. Without that level of control, he then decided SW was a better direction to move.
At this point the ball is in Paramount’s court. JJ has said he’ll produce a third movie if Paramount wants one. Given where this weeks numbers are coming in at, the question will be does Paramount want another one of the box office for STID isn’t any different then Trek09? Suddenly, the foreign box office is looming large in the decision making process….
Oh so JJ wanted the Trek TV rights? I guess JJ was interested in doing a Trek TV series?
Victory dance. Time to gloat.
Yep, not very Star Trek but considering the abuse I took, I think I’m allowed. Plus it’s the Wrath of Bernie. You know what Khan said. ” Revenge is like a Gyro. It’s best served with yogurt sauce. ”
First, here’s what I got wrong about STID. Peter Weller would be Paxton from Enterprise. That was a guess. But without too much in the spoilers area, here’s here’w what I got right.
.
1. Figured out Peter Weller’s role in the movie. It deals with unleashing a villain. (My blog December 5, 2011; Filter may delete multiple links so I’m posting the dates on my blog.)
2. Alice Eve is Carol Marcus. (Not a spoiler; reported on this website. I deduced that on July 15, 2012. My blog.)
3. And the big one. If you’ve read Chat and other threads, you know what I’m talking about. Who is John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch) ? Correctly deduced that from the evidence. . Took a lot of heat for that one from Jack, Dmduncan, Montreal Paul (where are you?) and Dean-O who called me an idiot. Yes, I get warned not to go over to the threads but I’m used to being called names.
W. Bush says he’s the Decider. Call me the Deducer. I got three out of four. That’s a .750 batting average. Just call me Sherlock. :-)
This review isn’t good for STID.
http://collider.com/star-trek-into-darkness-review/
It looks to me that we will have to wait until the third movie, if they do one before we see a new Trek TV series.
^ Forgot to add their are spoilers in that review.
Anyone know what would Paramount need to see in box office to make it be a success and make the third one. I think it cost $190 Million right? If it just made its money back would that be considered a success?
23. Basement Blogger – May 18, 2013
“Victory dance. Time to gloat.”
______
This is not the right place to gloat, Bernie.
Here is the place to do it right!
http://trekmovie.com/2013/05/17/sticky-into-darkness-open-weekend-thread/
Take note ; this is how you do it!
:))
Hey Sherlock. I Mean Blogger. Good Job.
Inalso Thought that he would be Khan. Now I was not nearly as Vocal about it unlike someone here I know. Lol
I think that and have said this. Khan shuld not be used in this movie. Should have waited for the 3rd one with a bit of a teaser on the 2nd one. But Alas. What can we do.
12. Harry Ballz – May 18, 2013
@10
Harry: “Hey, did you hear about how Erica Durance got a mudpack done on her face? It improved her looks for a few days, then the mudpack fell off!”
Erica: “That is NOT funny!”
Hey Harry. Next movie you get to see is.
Ericka Durance. Into her Darkness.
Sound’s like a Horror Movie.
Looks like we could be seeing Ant Man and Dr. Strange and The Hulk in Marvels Phase 3.
http://movies.yahoo.com/news/hulk-ant-man-doctor-strange-focus-marvels-phase-181220775.html
24 – I could refute some of those points, but not all. The biggest problem is that they grabbed TWOK wholesale and reshot it. On the other hand, it can hardly be claimed that THAT has never happened before in the hallowed halls of Hollywood. The movie is an actioner. It will live or die based on that, and that’s JJ’s gambit.
This is not TOS. It’s a money gamble, and a damned high-stakes one at that. It really depends on what the mass audience thinks. And we should know that very soon.
If it matters… My gut really enjoyed the film. I even felt more comfortable with this one than with ’09. It’s my brain that took a pounding. I can’t think for 2 seconds without starting to feel like STID cheated me.
Again, let’s see with the masses do with their $11.50 ($14.50 for 3D).
Movie sucked. Total lazy and obiously unoriginal.
Bonus nit-pic:
Pine’s reading of “Space, the final frontier…” sounded like he was reading the back of a tube of toothpaste. No sense of awe or excitement. No reverb, either. That woulda helped. It was Bakula-flat.
Double bonus nit-pic:
Big balls in space closing credits, again. If we’re whipping around the galaxy, could you not have thrown in a pulsar, black hole, groovy amoeba, The Fessarius, Space Station K-7. something?
And since I’m on a roll… So, McCoy has delivered Gorn babies? Really? So, scratch off Arena, along with Balance of Terror, and The Trouble with Tribbles, as things we’re not gonna get to in this alt-verse. Oh, and since the E can land, you can wipe out The Naked Time and Court Martial.
@20. LizardGirl:
you missed the point. Completely.
@34. CmdrR:
those things were already wiped out. Unless come up with another valid reason (lame excuse) to “re-imagine” them.
I just had a horrible thought…. What if they decided to reboot the whole series?!!
Here is a worse one guys.
What if the next movie was about.
Spock’s Brain.
CmdR, the Gorn are vicious enemy’s in the Star Trek video game. They said the game is canon. How could McCoy do that?
JJ: Canon? Bwahahahahahahahaha!
OK, I’ve been kvetching enough about the dumb things.
Now, a short list of things they got right in STID:
-Casting. Both Cumberbatch and Pine are wonderful.
The Atrium: The E’s new three-level Prado Deck (or whatever) is eye-dazzling.
-Alice Eve’s voice: Hey, the rest of her ain’t chopped liver, either. But, regardless of what Bibi did with the character, Alice has a wonderfully saucy, Aussie lilt to her voice. Glad they kept it.
-More face time for the E. There are more establishing shots for our favorite starship than there were in ’09, though they never slow the action.
-Mudd mention. OK, they never say Mudd, but his ship is there. Non fans won’t care, but it’s the right way to do it. If we want to see Mudd’s Women or I, Mudd, this easter egg doesn’t get in the way.
-Hats: Just because I want to see the poor fanboys sweat their cohones off at DragonCon in Atlanta this September. The HQ uni’s are nice, but look hella hot.
I also thought I heard a SW Tie Fighter sound during the chase scene with the Mudd’s ship and the Klingon ship. Also saw the NX-01 model in Admiral Marcus’ office.
@37 Mike
Or ‘THe lights of Zetar’. That is my most hated….
Still writing theseis.. Still not seen the film.
Or combine The Lights of Zetar and Spock’s Brain.
@36. Reg:
“I just had a horrible thought…. What if they decided to reboot the whole series?!!”
I actually think that’s the best thing for the series. but Paramount isn’t smart enough to do it correctly. Which is sad because that is how Star Trek becomes “Big League” and starts competing with the billion dollar franchise’s. And it could do so without sacrificing any of the Core Trek elements they are running away from now. Which is a mistake.
Anybody have any thoughts on the look of the Klingons in STID?
Were they supposed descendants of Klingon Augments who didn’t die?
Or…was their look simply a lack of attention to detail?

@ 27
Aurore,
Was already there to congoratulate fellow tortured Trekmovie regulars. MJ, Red Dead Ryan and myself took a ton of abuse but not from you. Now to find Montreal Paul and Dean-O. As John Harrison would say, “I have come back to have my Gyro with yogurt sauce ” or did he say something about revenge?
@ 28
Emperor Mike,
I always said it’s a bad idea to bring back that guy. Shhh. We can’t say he who must not be named or was that Valdemort? Anyway we’ve been there and done that. But I also said if they make a great Star Trek movie, then I will be happy even if they bring back Valdemort.
@ Mr. Wong.
“…and myself took a ton of abuse but not from you.”
_________
As Jeffrey Jacob Abrams would say…” Not true”.
I called you an “evilllllllllllll sexist “, once!
:))
@ 49
Aurore,
Did you? Did I discuss Alice Eve’s underwear somewhere? :-)
“Did you? Did I discuss Alice Eve’s underwear somewhere? :-)”
__________
That’s enough!
You sexist, misogynist pig!
:))
Mentioning Alice Eve’s Starfleet underoos makes one a “live” sexist.
She proves I have a pulse!
Star Trek leads box office but falls short of the $100 million expected. What does this mean for a third one? Even with this I still would think Paramount would want a third one to go up against the new SW movie? Or could a new Trek movie even beat a new SW movie?
http://collider.com/star-trek-weekend-box-office/
Could be worse, Aurore.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/05/17/berlusconi-bunga-bunga-nun-stripper_n_3292359.html
Bunga, bunga!
Haven’t seen it yet…still trying to muster up enough enthusiasm to actually get my a** in the car and drive to the theater. Did anybody look at the credits? Was Del’s name in them? I think I remember that supposedly there was not going to be a character mentioned by his name in the movie, but in the credits it would say his name.
Craiger — I do wonder whether Paramount will try to sneak down the amount it spends on ST IIIJ.
Honestly don’t know how to properly ask this, but does anyone else wonder whether we’d have seen more young butts in seats had Paramount come out with the STID toys a month ago instead of a month from now?
Star Trek 2009 is about to start on FX again.
Being in the ‘not Khan’ camp, I’m prepared to eat crow, but I expect to share the meal. I also said that if the production team when the Khan route, it was going to have to be a stellar effort on their part to keep the movie from descending into parody or fan service, and that if they failed the box office would suffer. Turns out I was right – if there is a plus side to this weekends numbers is that the foreign numbers may end up saving the day. That begs the huge question, why???
I suspect that a good chunk of the foreign market isn’t familiar with the WOK, so what came across as nerdish fan service to the domestic audience is fresh to them.
I think it’s going to be a struggle to hit 250MM domestically this time out. If the foreign box office keeps pace, it won’t be a disaster, but they won’t get a 190MM budget next time out….
Okay, I’ve not seen the movie yet, but I need to know, did Cumberbatch die?
Benadict Cumberbatch is very much alive.
The musician he played in the movie, Sammy Khan, not so much.
@60. Thanks. Apparently Kirk really didn’t die, either. Amazing things, those midichlorians. Well, it will be an interesting week, waiting to see of FF6 beats STID like a 20 dollar hooker or not….
@ 55
Hello Spockanella!
I’ve seen the movie twice. The second time I was looking for Del’s name. Sorry, could not find it. Del’s still in our hearts.
Go see Star Trek Into Darkness. I loved the movie. That’s coming from someone who merely liked the 2009 film.
@ 53
Craiger,
Star Wars VII is slated to come out in 2015. Star Trek III: The Search for More Money, ( I keeeed. I keeeeeed.) will likely come out in 2016 for the fiftieth anniversary. Well it better. A delay like last time could kill the box office. Batman is different. There are popular comics to keep the public interested.
THE KLINGONS IN STID…
WHY’D THEY LOOK DIFFERENT???
George Takei is in this Funny or Die mock educational film about gay marriage. Also stars Jesse Tyler Ferguson of Modern Family. The last part of the video is the funniest part.
http://www.funnyordie.com/videos/34201d7411/gay-beware-with-jesse-tyler-ferguson?playlist=featured_videos
Well, from the news floating around STID is probably going to be in the 400MM range worldwide. The business pages seem to believe that the third installment will be made, but considering that the video game tie in also flamed out, badly, that changes will be in order…
http://www.forbes.com/sites/johngaudiosi/2013/05/19/star-trek-into-darkness-weak-84-million-domestic-opening-follows-paramount-video-game-flop/?partner=yahootix
Hopefully, this will be the end of dusting off old Trek characters and giving the audience good solid stories.
@ 54
CmdrR,
Hold on. Bulesconi had stripper nuns?!!!
I liked Into Darkness. But I wish they had done an Orignal Story with fresh ideas instead of bringing back or in this case. Using Khan. Also. The Glitches on the science were pretty bad.
Enterprise goes into Warp from kronos and within a few minutes they were back in Federation Space. That and the beaming and transporters. They really need to bring on The Okudeas to keep things in line.
Phil @58, I think those young folk who haven’t watched TOS or the TOS movies such as STII: WOK won’t recognize the dialogue we older Trekkers recognize and find too familiar for “repurposing.” I think to them it seems new.
————————
I’ve been to see the movie four times :P and haven’t yet heard a groan or laugh even at The Scream part.
It was uncreative of the writers to recreate that particular scene, but I did enjoy the twist. It would’ve been tough to watch except Quinto and Pine totally pulled me into the moment.
ACTing!
I can find fault with the movie, and who can’t, almost every ST movie or episode has something silly in it. Except for Certain Movies, STV and Nemesis to name two, my cynicism kind of stays at the door of the movie theatre showing Star Trek. Luckily for Paramount :)
34, CmdrR, Maybe the big balls in space are JJ’s way of “exploring strange new worlds”.
“Look, guys! We showed you them at the end!”
37 Emperor Mike, “Spock’s Brain” was the best campy episode ever! I always feel like I’m watching “Plan Nine from Outer Space” or something. Cue Ed Wood in his fuzzy angora sweater!
6 Mitchell, I look forward to any Trek movie prepared to love it. It’s after I see it that I pick apart flaws. Trek has always had big plot holes and silly science mixed with its good plot elements and sensible science. It’s the characters that draw me back.
Trek is not sacred, but it is lovable.
I do wish they’d stop with the villains already – but that’s part of the marketing strategy for sales overseas. We’ll see what Trek3 brings. [shrug]
Odds of getting a Klingon baddie in ST:IIIJ?
50:50
Oddis of getting sentient space whale that teaches Kirk & Spock the true meaning of Christmas?
(The Powerball ticket in your pocket from last Saturday night has a better chance.)
@73. At the point the odds of just getting ST13 are 50/50…..
Right now, if I were Joe Paramount, I’d be ordering my marketing department chief to surrender his cohones. Nice to see the cast everywhere at once in the three weeks prior to the release, but we saw just about nothing at the 1 year out mark… or even the 6 months out mark.
Gotta also wonder whether anyone thought to move it further away from IM3. My gut tells me that Paramount will bring in a new director and lower the budget by a few tens of millions. Of course, that could give true fans a better movie, but will likely mean a smaller spectacle to promote and therefore a good shot at lower revenues.

Just (do NOT ask me why) slogged through the comments on the STID Sticky Thread.
What has been seen (er…read) cannot be un-well you know…Some of those folks are real pieces of work.
The nitmpicking and bitching for ST 09 were pale copies of this at best.
The water doesn’t get hot enough! Ewwww!
Jesus!
I thoroughly enjoyed STID, but i have only had the time to take in a single viewing. I am sure i will (like my whatever-we-are’s) will disect it to within an inch of it’s life on Blu Ray this fall (or whenever).
Hello, BTW, to all the Regulars (Veterans) and the new folks on Chat, too.
78. ‘Beach – May 20, 2013
Hey, how’s it going!
What’d you think of the way the Klingons looked?
What do you think are the implications?
@ 78
Going over to the main threads means that one takes the risk of being called names. As Q once said, “They’re a surly bunch.” .
And speaking of TNG’s “Tapestry” just looked at some video of it. What a great episode. Written by Ronald D. Moore. God, I miss Star Trek on TV.
Still recognizably Klingon, forehead ridges intact, but New! With rings! Kidding. Seemed badass enough.
Those that want to bitch (purists know who I’m talking to) that they should have looked like TOS Klingons should all know by now that that look was strictly budgetary. TOS was done on the cheap. Yes Enterprise retconned a reason why there were two types, but i will always consider true Klingons to be ‘crabheads’.
As to the implications for a future film? Got nothing. If they are gong to write a War, better be a good reason for one, or at least a plausible one.
@ 81
Good ep, that one. I had the opportunity to by the ‘Picard’ action figure wearing that TOS movie uni back in the 90s, but for reasons that shall remain fugging stupid i passed on it. It’s like worht $1000 or some stupid thing like that now.
Sigh…
Oh, the above is directed @ 80, BTW.
Jesus. ‘By’. Idiot Typonians.
“Buy” much? Fug me.
Two fascinatin’ things I learned about 3D and 3D IMAX this weekend:
[old hat to movie people]
1 – there is a polarizer filter that has to be the right way round or your 3D glasses won’t work, all you’ll see is double images >_<
2 – IMAX 3D sit wayyy up at the back toward the center and keep your eyes and glasses straight ahead toward the screen. Shift your head a little and you get a double edge.
I won a Star Trek Prize Pack that includes the new XBox 360 game. While I’m sure it’s cool, I don’t have an XBox 360, much less time to play video games. Before I go the eBay route, I wanted to see if anyone here is interested in buying this or trading for two Blu-Ray discs.
I’d be willing to sell the game for $50.00 or best offer. Or I’d be willing to trade for any two of the following blu-rays:
Godzilla Criterion
Monsters Inc 5-disc 3D
Up 5-Disc Combo 3D
The Adventures of Tintin 3-disc 3D
War Horse 4-disc Combo
Transformers: Dark of the Moon 4-Disc 3D
If you want to arrange a trade, I would prefer brand new packages or packages with Digital Copies that have not been redeemed. Email me if interested.
Schooooooool’s out for summer!
Schooooooool’s out for EVAH!
Yay! I’m done! I’ll go see ST09 Tomorrow.
Well. I Live in Austin Texas and the Sever Weather thret is movie my way. Hail to Baseballs and Strong Wind’s and even Isolated Strong Tornadoes.
As Kirk said.
Sound’s like fun.
Ok. for the next Star Trek Movie.
Star Trek. Cloverfield.
Yeah totally satisfied seeing this, classic Spock and kirk, can’t wait for the next one, seen it twice so far.
JJ keep them coming.
Man, I’m shocked that no one has anything to say about the way the Klingons look in STID!
I mean, I wouldn’t expect many comments from newbies, but Beach, Basement Blogger, Craiger, CmndR…all you guys are regulars and you had no thoughts whatsoever about why the Klingons look the way they do in STID??
Like are they supposed to be descended from Augments, or was it just a director/costume designer choice purely for aesthetics, etc…
I haven’t seen a single comment here, in the fan reviews or in the main thread about that issue. I guess either nobody noticed their unique appearance, or no one cares.
Here is the XBOX One event. New Halo TV series was also announced and it being produced by Spielberg and CBS.

@ 87
Spockchick,
You’re going to see ST09 tomorrow? What year is this? Did I travel into the future? I mean I think it’s 2013 in my universe.
@ 91
Um, Cygnus, hold our fire. Yeesh. I’ll admit this. The look of the Klingons didn’t bother me. They had ridges on their foreheads and spoke Klingon. I mean you’re really worked up about it. I’m guessing there are few Trekkers that are, my friend. So just relax. Find some Romulan ale and chill.
@BB
Indeed, I am late to the party, despite the film opening early in the UK.
@Cygnus
With every damned thing else JJ has turned on it’s ear (not that that’s a bad thing) , be glad that the Klingons still look like Klingons!
An old fan mag once tried to explain the difference between TOS TV and Movies Klingons by calling the Movie ones Imperial Klingons!
I just liked the way that looks written down, ‘Beach.
@ Spockchick
?????
RE: The Klingons. Didn’t see anything from the publicity shots that suggested anything substantially different, except possibly the piercings, which would be very consistent with a warrior/tribal culture…granted, I’ve not seen the movie yet, so maybe they were all singing Michael Jacksons greatest hits and moonwalking…which would be plenty reason to grab the pitchforks and fire up the torches….
@ Phil
“…maybe they were all singing Michael Jacksons greatest hits and moonwalking…”
Well I have seen the movie, and you nailed it!
It was great. I’ve seen it four times. Great character arcs, dissimilar to TOS, but very meaningful.
I’m all warm & fuzzy with love for my fave characters ever.
I don’t get all the hate focussed on it, but I think it’s the usual JJ-hate crowd.
I dispute the folk who seem to think Star Trek is or should be deep cinema. It’s fun, loveable adventurous, kick-ass FUN. For what it was the characters were authentic and moved me.
CONGRATULATIONS SPOCKCHICK on finishing your degree! You get a dancin’ banana!
I am hoping Harry Ballz is OK.
Have not heard from him lately. Esp after the premiere. Perhaps Erica finally caught up with him. They are both Canadian.
Best of Luck!
Do we call you Sir Spockchick, Dr. Spockchick or what?
Congrats, btw.
@102
Other Guy
I appreciate the concern, but I’m fine. I haven’t seen the new movie yet and am waiting to watch it before weighing in on the debate/discussion.
Oh, and Ms. Durance can kiss my grits!
@ …Spockchick of the Imperial Klingon Command…
Oh, now I get it. Duh. You like the way that title looks written down.
Forgive my lapse in whatever it was I suffered a lapse in…
Oh, and congratulations on finishing your degree.
For the record, people, she is now Dame Spockchick. Or whatever the Klingon equivalent is. BBMFWKEA Sp’kCh’k (In Klingon, of course) mayhap?

Cool Harry, Just wanted to say so long.
Anyone see BND’s tribute?
Or should we just assume that Kirk in bed with the Kitty Twins was the tribute, because Kirk is a sailor without pants?

You are from this day forward Dame _______ SpockChick in our Chat. You can self-title in the blank once you know what it is…
@ Harry Ballz
Grits? Y’all must be Southern Canadarian, eh?
@ CmdrR
I only saw STID once so far, but you can guarantee once I get it on Blu Ray I will nit pick it to death until I see something…I’m guessing it’s something not necessarily obvious, presuming of course they put something in at all.
104. Harry Ballz
Harry, your whimsical humor was missed by me these past few days.
94. Basement Blogger – May 21, 2013
Thanks for responding!
Heh — I’m actually not angry about it or protesting (yet). Just curious as to the reason behind the different look, and slightly miffed that it seemed to have gone by completely unnoticed, not to mention completely unaddressed by Bob Orci or anyone else in the production.
I have been giving them the benefit of the doubt so far, in that it might well have been a thoughtful decision tying the STID Klingons to the Augment Klingons of the earlier “Enterprise” era, as they tied Admiral Marcus to Section 31, which I appreciated as much as any Trekkie…however,
96. ‘Beach – May 21, 2013 may be right. It may well have been a completely thoughtless oversight, given the really bad decisions and plot holes in the movie. “Imperial Klingons” is pretty damn funny.
I wonder if they will do a Star Trek 2000/STID BluRay double pack with extras and deleted scenes?
Interesting article on why CBS cancelled two of its highest rated shows.

@ 110, 120
Hello Spockanella,
I’ve seenSTID twice. Did not see any reference to Del. But I could have missed it. Remember hearing a starship named for sci-fi writer Ray Bradbury.
Again, even if he’s not in the film, Del’s in our hearts. Please stop by again.

‘Sup? The Klingons are awesome. And I think the fight scene between Kirk and Klingon #27 was one of the best bat’leth fights I’ve seen. Would love to see more in the next movie. And congrats Spockchick!
Has anyone else DARED the sticky thread?
I mean, those people are viciously attacking one another. It’s degenerated into name-calling by two or three of them.
Guys, forgive this bit of Trekker blasphemy, but it is, after all, ONLY A MOVIE.
Put it this way: Got an opinion on something? Good for you. Bully! If i agree with it, then we’re good. If i disagree, then we’re off (hopefully) into a rousing, fun, interesting, intellectual debate about it.
But i am NOT going to call you an idiot (or worse) over it.
Okay. Two quatloos spent. Rant over.
Jeesh.
‘Beach:
How dare you insult the “sticky” thread! The film takes Gene’s vision and runs roughshod over it! They’re explorers! JJ is killing Gene’s legacy! And, the tribble looked totally wrong! So did the Klingon! He’s post ENT and pre-TMP, and he was not augmented, and his ridges were all wrong! Who’s in charge here, anyway!?!?!?!?! Bob?!?!? What is a D4 Klingon BoP?! Where are the schematics?! Hello?
What are they doing to our beloved franchise????!!!?????!!!! Why is Robocop/Paxton’s daughter English, when Paxton/Robocop is from Detroit or San Francisco?
The film was a complete an utter disaster! And so is everyone who really, really enjoyed it!
Like I did (really).
AJ
I can never tell if you’re being serious or not. I’m guessing not. LOL.
@ Lizardgirl – thanks! HighFive!
@ ‘Beach
Preach it! I just avoid all main threads now. But there is a bonus to all the bitchin’ and moaning and discussion of nacelles and Klingon ridges. Thanks to the storm o’ poop slung at the film I went in with low expectations – and my socks were blown off, I really enjoyed it. Sure, there were plot-holes, and a LOT of explosions, but at the end of the day I thought the cast were great and I came out of the film with a big smile on my face. I saw it in 3D, not my favourite medium, but Mr Spockchick wanted the full IMAX, but I will see it again next week in 2D.
I thought of all the actors, Chris Pine was a standout, and did not expect to be saying that. Scotty was much improved from last time’s ‘comedy relief’, and his accent sounded a lot more natural. I thought Spock going totally apesh** on Harrison at the end was awesome, and the shots of space were great too. Also, who would have thought an actor who made lightweight stoner films would have such gravitas – Mr Sulu was a BAMF! And Uhura speaking Klingon was great and a really tense moment.
Just to annoy Basement B, I’m going to say JH is not who he says he is!
I really hoped at the end, when being asked ‘where to, Captain?’ KIrk was going to say ‘ “Second star to the right and straight on ’til morning.” ah well, he didn’t, never mind.
On another note, apropos of nothing, a remake of Robocop? Srsly? WFT? Perhaps one of the greatest sci-fi films ever made, with wit, pathos, nasty people dissolving in acid and being run over, and the coolest good guy EVER. What’s up with that? Can’t improve on perfection.
@ Sp’kCh’k
“…I really hoped at the end, when being asked ‘where to, Captain?’ KIrk was going to say ‘ “Second star to the right and straight on ’til morning.” ah well, he didn’t, never mind……”
I really was expecting, “Mmmm…Thataway.” Like in TMP, but oh well…
@ Sp’kCh’k
They remade Total Recall, and after seeing it, i have to ask, what was the point?
RC was a pretty sick film. I don’t see how remaking it is going to improve it in any measurable sense.
Perhaps that’s what whomever greenlighted this remake lacked?
Sulu: Do not test me. You will fail. I know, right?
@140 ‘Beach. Do you mean sick as in good, or sick as in twisted, coz it was noth those thngs! I refused to go and see the TR remake out of allegiance to the original. Part of the problem is the remakes are without any humour. Paul Verhoeven makes ace films (haven’t seen showgirls, I put that down to his midlife crisis) that are so damed witty. His ‘recruitment ads’ for Starship Troopers were great parody, the commercials and newsreels he sprinkles in his films are brilliant. Everything is done with a wink, and done so well. And yet, when Peter Weller sees that image of his family, I totally shed a tear.
Seems NOBODY in Hollywood these days has a sense of humour. Life is funny. Dementia, Cancer treatment, death. All these things have humour spring out of them, even if oftentimes it is a by-product of hysteria. And that is different from jokes. We all hear army humour, police humour and mortuary-tech humour. Without that release, these people couldn’t function in the jobs many of us would not like to do. I see a lack of acknowledgement of that in Hollywood now, and it makes films very, very unreal. Paul Verhoeven ‘gets’ it.
Sorry for rant, it is a big bugbear of mine :-)
@ me who can’t type
BOTH those things (line 2 of post)
@ SpockChick
I meant ‘Sick’ in both ways, now that you mention it. Great film.
Verhoeven does have this little glimmer of barely supressed glee in his works. I had quite forgotten that he made Starship Troopers. I loved the recruitment stuff and the news flashes and such. His stuff is a tad violent (I’m no prude, but even I can go “Dude, really?” sometimes) but otherwise i like his movies.
I actually saw Showgirls. Again, did not realize he directed it. Must have missed the credits on that one. Trust me, you didn’t miss anything. It was pretty much kinda stupid.
Humor is anecessary part of life. Life is depressing. People protest “how can you laugh at X, Y, or Z?” If we can’t or simply won’t find humor in the worst of situations, we might as well all “join hands and walk into a chopper blade”.
I do not mean to get all heavy and sh*t. But I joke around a lot, because are times making a joke is the only way of articulating meaningfully without screaming.
Wait. Are we talking abotu the same movie? Showgirls, as in with that Saved By The Bell chick? Elizabeth What’s-her-name?
@’Beach.
Yes, elizabeth Berkley. When I googled her I got an ad for a film that obliterated Ms Berkley and said ‘The purge has commenced’ in a kinda film voiceover man voice. Thought that was funny! Yup, the director of Robocop made that. But I can’t judge, not seen it :-)
He also directed Basic Instinct with Stone and Douglas. didn’t see that one. That’s the one where Stone recrosses her legs, right?
He also directed Hollow Man with Kevin Bacon. I saw that one. Wish i hadn’t. There was a sequel where they tried ot explain the invisibilty serum as being, what else, a super-soldier sort of joint. Oddly, though it had a budget lower by an order of magnitude than its predecessor, HM II was a better movie.
SPpeaking of RoboCop though, what the hell was up with “I’ll by that for a dollar?”
@ me who also can’t type
Big fingers, small keyboards.
“SPpeaking” much? That’s SPEAKING, Idiot.
@ ‘Beach. Apparently the studio squashed his philosophy for Hollow Man and he ended up making simething that wasn’t his vision.

137:
‘Beach: That was all tongue-in-cheek.
I enjoyed the film immensely due to the actors’ performances. Casting is nailed. Quinto is the man. Pine and Pegg (and Cho!) stepped up bigtime.
More McCoy, please.
Most of what I write here is sarcasric…What I just wrote is not.
Anyone notice how they are promoting Man of Steel vs STID? I wonder if they could have Hardees in the future and show Kirk and Spock eating a Hardee’s burger? Or maybe Alice Eve as Carol Marcus eating one?
http://collider.com/man-of-steel-hardees-commercial/
@151. Saw the fast food tie in at Carls Jr. and plenty of toys at K-Mart a couple of days ago. I understand STID has some merchandise rolling out in a few months. Probably in time for the DVD/Blue-Ray release…
At this point I suspect it’s going to be business as usual for Paramount, when it comes to Trek. We will get another installment when they feel like doing one….
152:
“Business As Usual for Paramount” means release the Blu-Ray and close up shop. All toys to the bargain bin. CBS still will not support the franchise with an animated series, and everyone will forget about “Trek” until a bright bulb on the CBS tree realizes that TREK was 50 years old last year, and we should do something.
STID has fallen from the number one spot thanks to “Hangover III,” and once the new “Fast & Furious” is out, will drop precipitously. Its worldwide revenue is now equal to its production budget ($190m), which means it is a write-off. The conscious decision to NOT launch in China doesn’t help. ST09 was consciously not launched in many markets due to incompetence.at the HQ level within Paramount.
I thoroughly enjoyed the film, except for the bit where K saves the ship and S yells. I wish it well.
135, Beach, I made the mistake of engaging one Gal over there. NEVER AGAIN. I’m a feminist, but I disagreed with HER feminism b/c I like Spock and Uhura being a couple. Whereupon she lectured me that I wasn’t enough of a feminist. I’ll be avoiding her in the future.
I think she’s the same one who lectured everyone for two weeks about how William Shatner deserves an Academy Award for Lifetime Achievement. Jaysis on a Popsicle Stick.
Ahh, diversity and IDIC :)
AJ, I read that Hangover III is getting REALLY bad reviews. I hated the first one, so haven’t been back. I’m hopeful that once folks have been to enjoy the gross-out, they won’t go back. I saw one headline that said, Goodbye and Good Riddance to Hangover ;)
Spockchick, Almost every moment I watched Scotty in this film, I thought, Spockchick is gonna like this …! How ’bout that “haud on wee man!” in the Bridge scene after Chekov talks about beaming Spock out of the volcano with the Enterprise above? Pegg said he learned all kinds of Scottish phrases from his father-in-law but Abrams wouldn’t let him use them. Abrams even made him explain the word “wee” to Kirk for heaven’s sake. Scotty saved the day on the Vengeance, and Pegg proved he’s not only a good comic actor, but one with depth. His face after Kirk fires him, and his acting in the Warp Core scene, were both very good dramatically. [And he has a very handsome profile, I noticed after Kirk knocked him out!] On the comic side, I loved his big sigh as he was running thru that endless hangar in the Vengeance.
I’d hate to be the poor sucker who has to swab and wax THAT deck.
Marja:
Reviews are less and less relevant as the years go by.
Let’s face it: Marvel/Disney can release an Iron Man film at this point where RDJ doesn’t even don the costume. HE sells the film because his interpretation of Tony Stark Jr. is iconic.
Iron Man 2 was a bad movie, yet it made bags of cash because of Downey, and because it was released on-time within an internal strategy at Marvel to lead up to Avengers, which made $1.5 billion worldwide.
Iron Man 3 is now over a billion worldwide.
The reason is tie-in marketing via animated series in all countries which keep boys and girls interested in the characters between film, and which guarantee merch sales throughout the period between films. To kids, and not to nerdy collectors,
Until Paramount (and Bad Robot) and CBS can get on the same page, it’s unsure what the future holds. I wish they’d just sell it to Disney, frankly.
Hmm. Look’s like I am taking over.
I just don’t get Paramount/Bad Robot. How can you sink that kinda coin into a project then act like your job is over?
I want TOYS!
CmdrR
Your comment in 158 is essential. The CBS vs Paramount/Bad Robot thing seems to be a root of the problem.
@159. CmdrR in a jam
I want toys so I can sinka tiny USS Enterprise in my fish tank as a gag!
AJ, I wonder if JJ would feel he was in heaven having both the Trek TV and Movies and SW TV and Movies under one roof with Disney?
162
Craiger: JJ has to make products that sell. Both in cinemas, and then as games, and toys.
Disney is frigging surfing on top of Marvel and Pixar at the moment, so if JJ fails with Star Wars 7, da svidanya!
STID drops to third place after Hangover 3 and Fast and Furious 6 premiers. STID domestic total so far $119 Million.
http://collider.com/friday-box-office-fast-furious-6-blows-by-the-hangover-iii-to-start-crowded-memorial-day-weekend/
Yeah, I got kind of bored reading the main threads. Also, the sticky’s too long and I keep forgetting where I left off.
Looking forward to Man of Steel and Pacific Rim, yeah!
AJ, I’m agreeing with your points. SW showed the industry what a mint it was leaving on the table by not putting out toys. ST has at least an equal capacity. IMHO, Trek beats SW at this game, because it works on more levels. You can watch it as a child (and play with the toys) because you like the color and the action and the music. As you get older, you can come back and think over the questions posed by the stories. You can’t find a question in SW unless “Who’s Your Daddy?” is a question.
The toys ARE an important part of the franchise. (Games and comics, too.) They nurture the future consumers, while causing us old farts to shell out quatloos for plastic for the kiddies.
So… COME ON, PARAMOUNT! GET IN THE GAME!
I avoid the threads.
I would prefer to discuss it once it’s all gone,
Iy is a decent Star Trek film. Let’s allow it to do its stuff in the market. Then, we can dismantle it.
So bored. Doctor Who is on hiatus until November. (Who knew the name of the Doctor was Bernie?) No Game of Thrones this week. Finishing off Sparticus (50% Blood pron / 50% Pron pron.)
Tweeted Roberto about the BND tribute. Eerie silence so far.
@ Marja
Yay for Scotty! His accent was loads better. Hod on wee man – brilliant!
@168. CmdrR
I haven’t seen the last episode but happy to discuss when I do. I have it taped.
CmdrR what do you think of the Dr. Who season finale? I wonder what the 50th Anniversary will be like with Tenant and Piper returning? Too bad Amy and Rory could meet Clara.
I have also been avoiding the main threds. To many Duech Bags there. Lol.
I just saw “Fast & Furious 6″ today. Great movie. Best in the series. The characters were well developed, the action was non-stop and crazy, and there were also some good humorous moments. This series just keeps getting better and better.
“Fast & Furious 6″ is the best summer movie I have seen so far, even better than “Star Trek Into Darkness”, and definitely tops “Iron Man 3″.
I will be seeing Fast and Furous on Sunday. Sure can’t wait.
Mike its strange is it all of a sudden a lot of newbies started showing up in the main thread? I wonder if they did a search for STID and that’s how they found Trekmovie? Or could that be a good thing and STID got a bunch of new Trek fans who never saw ST 2009 and now like Trek?
I don’t mind a lot of new people. But when they act like Dueshes. Then I have a problem.
Hmmm…it’s the regulars you gotta worry about sometimes!!!
If Who only busted the pig, they could cgi Peter Davidson and Tom Baker with the actors maybe doing the voices. What fun that would be!
I thought the finale was OK, but it feels as though they keep missing opportunities. The trip inside the TARDIS was painfully thin. The resolution in The Name of the Doctor works, but only because of a time-whimey fix. There just wasn’t much of an emotional hook.
Also… I like Clara fine, but Amy loves me, she just doesn’t know it. Wonder if Leela is still out there in her skin-mini. Mmmmm, the 70s!
177 – I mean for the 50th. (Please do better than pulling archival clips and using body doubles!!!)
Hello. I think it was cruel to end ST Enterprise seasons like this. There are so many new episodes they could have made. Is there any way to bring Star Trek Enterprise show back? It’s the best show of the franchise IMHO.
#179. Nope.
@ AJ
You’d think I would get that after so long, but um, I um, uh, grew fatigued, yeah that’s it, um I um, grew fatigued. Yeah. So I um, you know, um, didn’t get it?
@ 154
I admire your fortitude in actually involving yourself in that Antares Maelstrom and standing up for yourself..
I myself? ugh. It’s like watching a pack of dogs go at each other over a scrap of bone. I didn’t dare step in or lose a hand. I was happy to observe, i am unashamed to say.
For those who hated the Enterprise finale:
It wasn’t a “finale” in the purest sense, i.e., it wasn’t intended as a finale. It was the last episode in the pipeline when the show got axed…
@ 176
Preach it! You better watch out for us, alright…K/S when you least expect it!
Still haven’t seen the movie.
Busy at work, but not motivated to go see it either.
After the spoiler description I read, there’s no rush.
I don’t care how well it’s put together……..
We waited four years for THAT??!!
183:
Harry:
Shut up and go see it.
There IS a rush because of Fast & Furious 6, Man of Steel, Wolverine, and everything that will punch it out of cinemas before you can say “eh?”

Just saw your name! It goes up to eleven, it’s one louder.
I knew it! Harry Ballz is really Shatner!
Anyone wonder what’s going to happen to Trek news now that STID has premiered?
189/Spockchick
“One Louder” is always a good philosophy to tive by., in;nit, guv?”
@187
Craiger, thanks for posting that trailer for Man of Steel.
This looks good! Glad to see the morons at Warner Brothers finally woke up and recognized that NOBODY liked the first trailers with the “origin” crap and his Earth father muttering the tired old line, “son, you are here for a reason” YAWN!
This new trailer seems to hint at what we should be excited about! Dramatic action!
BRING IT ON!!!
No problem, Harry. I figure the first part of the movie is going to be Cal-El coming to Earth, showing him as a young kid, then in high school, then trying to find himself. Then the second half will be Clark in Metropolis and General Zod coming to Earth, trying to find Cal-El, then the final battle with Zod and his people.
It looks like in this movie Krypton doesn’t get destroyed and is in a war with General Zod and his people, so Jor-El sends Cal-El to Earth to escape the War and Zod finds out where Jor-El sent him.
Um, that’s KAL-EL.
(laughs like Beavis &Butthead)
HEH! HEH, HEH, HEH!
STID has almost made its money back $147 Million.

@183. Harry Ballz:
Don’t Waste Your Time. It’s even worse than you can possibly imagine. Watching or doing anything else is a far better use of your life.
@156. AJ of the Kazon Hegemony, (or Whatever):
Agreed. Star Trek needs to expand it’s fanbase by expanding it’s universe, ala the comic book films, And Not By Changing It’s Core like they tried with the last 2.
@193. Harry Ballz:
Goyer, Nolan and Zach Snyder writing and directing and you were worried about “dramatic action”? Ha Ha Ha silly. Their Marketing Campaign has been brilliant! Best i’ve seen in years. Just stringing you along bit by bit and then blowing you away late with maximum exposure leading up the Release. PERFECT.
MoS lookie good.
SUPERMAN I, II
Kal-El of the Planet Krypton is sent to Earth by his parents as an infant to save us all from General Zod (Terence Stamp)
MAN OF STEEL
Kal-El of the Planet Krypton is sent to Earth by his parents as an infant to save us all from General Zod (not Terence Stamp)
Aww, shucks, Zack Snyder
By the way, Anthony will soon be by with his whip for all the sock-puppeting.
@200 AJ
We iz not sockpuppeting. we iz suffixin’
So Man of Steel is really Superman 1 and 2 combined.
@ 188
Craiger,
Watch it. Alice Eve’s underwear is setting the Internet on fire. Radical feminists and the PC police are all over this site. Let’s pray that they don’t watch the movie Crossing Over. They’ll get a stroke when they see the beautiful Ms. Eve in that one. The radical feminists submit their movies to the Bechdel test. Kind of sucks the fun out of the movie, doesn’t it? I also get the feeling that the radical feminists hate men too. They hate me and I’m a liberal!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bechdel_test
Watched The Dictator today. much better use of Ben Kingsley than iron man 3 and a far better performance from him aswell
Finally saw a FEW Trek toys in Toys R US, next to far more SW toys. The Trek ones don’t even get one of those aisle markers above them.
Star Trek Fighter Pods. Not my kinda thing, but aimed at the 8-year-olds out there.
Into Darkness has the most spectacular graphics of all time. Bar none,. But the plot (if you can call it that) is the absolute worst perversion of the Star Trek storyline, or any entertainment franchise’ storyline for that matter.
I read a terrible critical review of it. and the Critic was right. I feel like writing them to say that I won’t pay to see any more dribble. Oh yeah, they just HAD to have a Tribble in the movie. Tribble dribble.
Star Trek has always been NEW and Fresh. The Next Generation continued that legacy. This new s**t is an abomination and is devoid of all creative thought.
“I read a terrible critical review of it. and the Critic was right.”
If it was a terrible critical review, how could the critic be right? Also, if it was as negative as the mini-review you just gave it, then no, the critic wasn’t right.
And neither are you.
FACE!!!!
I joke, of course. We’re all entitled to our opinions. I happened to enjoy the movie despite its many shortcomings. It’s definitely Trek, it’s just that the message tends to get a bit muddled amongst the action and occasional silliness.
I agree that this Trek was not as new or fresh as it should have been. It also didn’t take many risks, and the few it did take were not major. All-in-all, it felt a bit too safe and derivative. Yes, it was enjoyable; there were great character moments and great action scenes. There was never really a dull moment. But, in the end, it’s all stuff we’ve seen before.
@207. Charles Trotter:
you are correct in Nick being wrong. into darkness did not have the most spectacular effects of all time =p
@199. AJ:
@202. Craiger:
That means Star Trek fans, especially most on here should wind up loving it blindly and heap endless praise upon it. Hahaha…
The Real Problem with Superman is that Donner’s version is So Good, It’s almost “Too Good”. It’s so defintitive, anything that now honors Superman’s origin stories and beginnings is seen as “copy-cating” his film. For better or Worse.
208:
Mitchell:
Re: Superman. You’re right. Yet, what they are doing, like CBS did with “Trek,” is now saying, “By the way, did y’all notice how stodgy and old fashioned Dick Donner’s “Superman films were?”
It’s like the BS that “Star Trek is getting stale” we were fed during the 4th Season of ENT. Warners is desperate to “darken” Superman, and make him more “real.” The actual shitty Supermans were III & IV + that over-long “Clark Kent flies after nine freaking years of wasting our time” Show. They need his character to approach the heights of their (over-rated) Batman franchise.
STID is at $250m now worldwide.
207:
Charles:
Always good too see you in CHAT.
It is genuinely tough to write 726 compelling TV hours about a bunch of gay guys from the future riding around in ships in space in their pajamas, and then re-boot it so the girls on the ship like them. It’s still the RoboCop vs. Sherlock show with the chick from Entourage.doing an American Apparel ad in the middle. And they kill off Pike (You bastard!). We already know whom our dandy young lads will search for once Carol Marcus decides to make Genesis while she is knocked up by her overgrown (gay) boyscout friend and Bendy Cumberbatch gets his dancing troupe back together for the big 50th anniversary close co-starring Hugh Jackman as James Harrison, who is the JJverse equivalent to Sybok, because he actually is Sybok.
Did I see the right film? This IS the one with the talking colored ponies, right?
ST IIIJ Opening Theme:
At the end of the Rainbooooow…
Is Botany Bay.
Where Khan and his ponies…
all laugh and play.
Nyota and her friends Spocky and Jimmy
stop by one day…
and play games in Botany Bay.
$1.7B worldwide.
@209. AJ, RULER OF AUSTRALIA:
Superman was always dark and gritty. In fact always the grittiest and current character of all.
Born in the depression for a reason. His early pages are of him pummeling mafia bosses, white collar criminals and roughing up dead beat dad’s and wife beaters.
Later battling evil scientist’s and their mutations were deep current fears of their time. It only looks silly now decades after the atomic/cold war era
His darkest comics are the highest selling and most popular. That’s why the head of DC and The New 52 comicbooks returned him to his truest roots. HE’S A BAD A * *
It’s people perceptions looking back that make him look like a lighthearted and cheesy character who’s being darkened up.
I think the new Superman Movie will be good. Based on what I have seen. This movie will blow us away and then maybe we can look forward to a Justice league.
Ok. Finally went to see that Star Trek thing. I have to admit it was better than I thought it would be (and definitely better than the first one), even if there were many moments I had to mentally put my fingers in my ears and say la la la la la can’t hear you for all the silly bits. Note to the Supreme Court….recycling one liners from the show and other films may raise a feeble chuckle or two, but if it’s meant to placate the die-hard fans it probably won’t. Not that anything would, but you know.
And I’m still pissed that there’s nothing to memorialize Del that I can see. They weren’t obligated to do so, for sure, but they SAID they would, and that’s the part that makes me mad.
Also, I’m probably one of a half dozen people world wide who just doesn’t get the appeal of Bendick Pantysnatch.
MIke, make up your mind are you Emperor of the Alternate Universe or Krypton? LOL.
Any confirmation on a tribute to BND in the film?

Joking aside, I want you to know that you are my kind of feminist, Bernie.
:)
203 BB, PLEASE DON’T MENTION THE BECHDEL TEST I AM SOOOOO SICK OF READING ABOUT IT
Thank you ;)
Mitchell,
“Ender’s Game” looks to be a good role for Ben Kingsley as well. If you love his acting chops, see him in House of Sand and Fog, a heartbreaking film in which he plays an Irani [Persian] ex-military officer.
135, ‘beach, Yes, I dared the thread, and have dared it, but was roundly drubbed by a certain trekkiegal for not being as much of a feminist as she is. Personal opinion? She may be in a sexist industry, but she ain’t got jack on me, I was in the military 1978-1998. So ha.
Gals, Guys,
Does Del Trame = British Naval Dude?
Who is sorely missed because that guy was hil-ARRRRRGH-rious, mateys.
:( I saw about BND’s passing a while back, on this thread maybe?
Couldn’t “Captain Abbot” have been Captain Trame? I mean really.
AJ, I have the same take on Iron Man – the only reason I ever go see them is Downey’s portrayal of Tony Stark, and somewhat b/c Tony Stark is the only superhero I really buy into, b/c he *made* himself a superhero with supertechnology ….
Craiger. I am the Emperor of all realm’s.
@215. Spockanella:
Don’t get it either. cumerbach causes a lot of fuss for really nothing. I get the massive push of hype he’s getting from Hollywood but not people raving about him. He’s fairly average and below with extremely limited range.
@225. Marja, a very sad BND appreciator:
That’s an interesting take on “superheroes”
::decloaks::
Say, anybody hear about this ‘Star Trek’ thing that just came out? I think it’s a movie or something.
::recloaks into darkness::

***SPOILER ALERT***
The villain turns out to be General Chang disguised as Kor disguised as Kang disguised as Koloth disguised as Kruge disguised as the Borg Queen disguised as Q disguised as Gary Mitchell disguised as Harry Mudd disguised as Garth of Izar disguised as the Whale Probe disguised as Henri Ducard disguised as Anakin Skywalker disguised as Tim Tebow disguised as Bill Nye the Science Guy disguised as Admiral Archer’s prized beagle disguised as Rudy from ‘The Cosby Show’ disguised as Khan disguised as John Harrison.
Called it.

I can’t wait for ‘Galaxy Quest Into Darkness.’
::recloaks into darkness::
Mitchell, Is Ironman a superhero or isn’t he? I may not really understand the genre, but when he puts on The Suit to fight evil, doesn’t he become a superhero, even though he made the suit himself? [which is righteous btw, even tho Tony can be a totally clueless jerk in "real" life]
@ 223 Marja
I do now presume to know what industry trekkiegal is involved in but having been in uniform myself i can only agree that the military, at least, the US Army, is one of the worst sexist outfits there are. I was in and out twenty-odd years ago and i can’t see where they’ve gotten much better, but that’s a can-O-woims for another day.
And to respond to #231, as a longtime role-playing gamer in the superhero genre, anyone who has extraordinary abilities that uses them to fight for good is a Superhero, regardless of the source of their abilities. Where is it written that those who are, e.g., physically enhanced, whether natural or induced, are only allowed to be called Superhero? And on the subject of feminism, i use the term “Superhero” in respect of the genre in question. No gender bias is intended or implied.
Is not Batman considered a superhero despite the tiny factoid that all of his crimefighting prowess is also based on technology?
Punisher fights crime with only his weapons, his wits, and his military experience. No powers there.
Oh for f_ck’s sake. Typonians strike again.
It should read, “I do NOT presume…”
Idiot.
@ 229
Odd. I thought Cumby was playing Mr. Brack. Hmmmm.
Has anyone see the new Episode from Star Trek Continues. It has Michael Forrest reprising his role as Apollo. I actually enjoyed it a lot. Here is the Link.

Emperor Mike — Thanks for posting that.
They’re doing wonderfully well with the sfx.
I could make snarky comments about the singing, but I’ll leave that to others.
Great to see Chris Doohan getting some scenes.
@ SpockChick
@Marja
You two are hereby entitled to slap my wrist. I’ve been bad.
I went on the Sticky thread, with a theory on time travel in TOS and various other insights. One Wiliam Bradley just had to come by and go all Ahab on me by harpooning my opinion, and only one sentence out of context at that. Then when he didn’t have anything better to say, he resorted to name-calling.
What you get to slap me for is that i didn’t let up. I kept needling his sorry ass.
Most fun I’ve had in years.
Master and CmdrR. That was a really good Episode. I loved how they made the Big E Look just like it did back from Tos Days. But with better quality. Really well made show.
Oh yes. Singing. Well She is no Nichelle Nichols. But. Will do. Lol.
Hey Beach. Give um Hell. Also. If you need it. I can loan you my Personal Agoniser for you to use anyway you see fit.
Ventured on to Sticky and commented on How the Duesh Bags have taken over and Bob Orci gave me a Shout out. So I responded to Bob by telling him he is always welcomed here in Live Chat.
Bob Orci. If you read this. You are always Welcomed here and you will be treated with Respect. Right Guy’s.
The Trek news has sure dried up after the STID premier. I wonder how soon before ST3 news happens? If they make one.
242. Craiger
What do you mean, “If they make one?”
STID may not be as big as Paramount was hoping, but it’s still gonna make ‘em a good bit of cash. It’ll just be less and longer than expected.
PS: If J.J. Abrams ends up not directing the next Trek, the job will go to Brad Bird. Mark my words!
PPS: If the job goes to Brad Bird, I wonder what the odds are at getting Tom Cruise to make a cameo? :-P
@ 243
Hey, Trot? You know something we don’t?
243: Tom Cruise? Excuse me while I vomit on my shoes.
BTW, I’m not sure I’m comfortable with emo Spock.
Tom Cruise?
Wouldn’t it be better if they could have a cameo from someone who can ACT?
Charles I just said that based on the box office numbers. Isn’t looking like they just barley made their money back on the film. Box Office Mojo said it cost $190 Million and its made $258 Million. Don’t get me wrong I want their to be a third one.
Harry, who acts better Durance or Cruise? LOL.
‘Nella! Long time no, er…um, you know…
Mayhap the next one will have a different writing team? Spock will be less emo?
Sorry. Wrong Tom. Would rather have Tom Hanks. Maybe play. Commodore Decker.
Would rather have Tom Hanks in the next movie. Maybe play Commodore Decker.
Ugh. Had to give up on the Sticky. Idiots abound. t got to the point i had to eave a comment for Anthony on Feedback to look into it.
“IT” got the point…but anyway…
Tom Hanks as Decker. Hmmmm. Vellly Intellesting….
Mike – Durance as an Admiral giving Kirk orders.
Craiger play nice! Whatchoo gots against our ‘Arry? ;P

I know why you said it and I gave my response with full knowledge of the film’s box office numbers. As I said, though, it’ll still be making money, just not quite as much as anticipated. But they will turn a profit and there will be a third film; just don’t expect its budget to be quite so high. ;-)
244. Beach
“Hey, Trot? You know something we don’t?”
Depends on the topic. :-P If you’re referring to Brad Bird, though, he just seems the most likely replacement to me. He’s already directed a major hit for Paramount, namely ‘Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol’, so the studio is sure to back him as a replacement. ‘Ghost Protocol’ also had Bird working with most of the current ‘Trek’ producers, including J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk, and he is currently collaborating with Damon Lindelof on ‘Tomorrowland.’ So it seems to me that, assuming Abrams doesn’t take the helm, Bird will be the top choice for the producers and for Paramount.
As for the Tom Cruise thing, that was just a joke. (I hope.)
252. Emperor Mike
I would love to see Tom Hanks as Commodore Decker! I really hope they can make that happen.
Hey Craiger. Sounds good. Maybe have Durance be a fling for Kirk. Lol.
Oh I did go to the main thred earlier and called most everyone Deushbags. Orci pretty much agreed. Lol.
Here’s the short review for The Hangover Part III. It’s more crime drama than comedy. Unappealing characters. Paucity of jokes. What can I say if the funniest part of the movie happens during the end credits scene. Wait for it to come to pay per view and save your money.
Full review below. I make news by creating the Hung Test. for movies ala the The Bechdel Test. It’s named after American Idol’s William Hung.
To pass the test, a movie must feature a geeky Chinese guy, with an Asian accent, and the guy must do a full frontal showing off his um… humble stuff. The Hangover III passes the test.

#237, Beach, If you want a proper spanking, challenge that “Gal” – she gave me quite the drubbing I must say. Thing is, if you challenge her, she’ll go on and on and use Megabytes of space … possibly for weeks … I’ll never forget her endless Shatner defense :D … William Bradley, [high-pitched whine] HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM ancient test pattern signal – “skip on down”
#252, Doomsday Machine is one of my favorite episodes ever. Both Kirk and Scotty prove their engineering chops and Kirk his bravery. And Tom Hanks is a bit of a Trekker himself, isn’t he? He’d make a great Decker, wow. Excellent idea. Re your post #259, I saw a German fan on the site who called everyone a very similar name, “Deuschbags” – LOL
And speaking of Deuschbags, may Tom Cruise never get within a light-year of Trek.
At the risk of incurring wrath, I like emo Spock :)
@231. Marja:
I just thought it was an interesting opinion to have because he’s the most believable to you.
@ 262 Marja
Oh, man. I went to Feedback and complained about how William Bradley and one or two other choice idiots were dragging the Sticky down. Bradley in particular was just being a d*ck for the express purpose of being a bigger d*ck than everybody else. I truly do hope there’s a ban in his future.
Some other wag got on about how calling the Big Three “The holy Trio” or whatever Trekkers like to call K/S/M was ‘blasphemy’ because it used the Lord’s name in vain. she finally shut up when someone pointed out that the term has been used for those characters since 1966, and had nothing to do with religion.
Trotter,
Yes, I’ve heard good things about Brad Bird. For someone who was primarily an animation director to do so well with the live-action Ghost Protocol was pretty amazing.
Prometheus was interesting, visually and direction-wise. Wonder if Sir Ridley would ever…..?
Nah. he would probably consider Star Trek beneath him.
Hey Beach. You need to tell us what you really think. You are simply holding back to much. Don’t be a Vulcan. Be a Human for just one more moment. Lol.
@ 266 Emperor Mike
I am really trying to say what i really feel but It’s just so difficult to find words to string together to form coherent thoughts that really and truly say what i want to say and express the feeligns that I’m feeling and the emotions that are runing through me and how the universe effects me and how much trouble it is to find my place in the universe and make sense of everything and come up with crfeative and new ways to say these thigns without sounding like an idiot and hopefully helping somebody along the way and being a good person and telling people how to be bettter people and…..
(deep breath)
This is ali said internally, of course…;-)
Beach. There is hope for you yet.
I.D.I.C
Watched ST III on Blu Ray the other day. I had forgotten how good a movie it really is, when you pay deeper attention to it. Commentary gives it further insight, which enhances the experience.
I have always thought that that trilogy was the best Trek ever made. Taking that thread of “Remember” at the end of ST II and leading it into an entire sequel was brilliant.
ST IV was a fun way to wrap things up. Nice once in a while not to have a villian or any really heavy themes. They had problems to solve, but no shots were fired and nobody had to die. A nice thing for what it was.
Of course, some folks (who shall remain William Bradley, hopefully banned) would argue that no time travel in TOS ever changed anything, or was neatly changed back by a single act. I say nay, nay. Kirk brought a breeding pair of whales into the 23rd where there had not been any before, thus altering the future, his future, from his point of view.
I bet by Picard’s time, humpbacks numbered in the thousands.
@269. Nah, they probably inbred themselves out of existence after a couple of generations….or the Federation began a time travel program to repopulate all extinct species, which ended badly when the T-Rex population escaped Alcatraz Island Zoo, and ate the visiting Federation president….
@264. I don’t know, according to the lady from NZ I’m the biggest D-bag in the known universe….
Hey Phil. Sorry. You are no where close to that.

Oh Great!, Rats on Mars.
http://www.designntrend.com/articles/4531/20130529/rats-mars.htm
AND another thing (she whined)…do they not have Google in the 23rd century? I mean, they really had to track old Spock down to have him tell them Khan was a bad guy? (not that I don’t always like seeing Leonard Nimoy). There’s a word I’m looking for…what is it…oh, yeah. Gratuitous. Gratuitous use of Nimoy!
And don’t get me started about the whole Enterprise hiding underwater business.
Hey Spockanella. What about Rats on mars Lol
Spockanella – Or gratuitous fist fights. Or gratuitous trip to Klingonland when the transwarpamagig could have sent Khan straight to the Vengeance. Or gratuitous references to the first movie (“You remember that?” YES, it was only one friggin movie ago!) Etc…
276, Spockanella – LOL – I thought it was called the Library Computer :)
RATS ON MARS???
… Why do I need to look at that, when I can go to the main thread [snicker] or watch C-SPAN?
276. Spockanella
Contacting Old Spock was more about finding out the kind of person Khan is, what he’s capable of, and if/how he can be defeated. Someone who had actually encountered Khan can provide far more useful and pertinent information than the computer could.
278. GrumpyR
There were, like, two fist fights in the whole movie. Hardly “gratuitous.” And of course there are going to be references to the previous movie (not that there were anywhere near enough to be called “gratuitous.”)
Good point about Khan transporting to Qo’noS, though. Why *would* he do that instead of going straight to the ‘Vengeance?’ Maybe boborci can provide the answer…
Once Harri-Khan had gone rogue, as Marcus put it, it was likely that the Vengeance was ordered to maintain shields and/or other security measures to prevent Harri-Khan from doing just that.
Marcus wanted Khan found and dealt with. Since Marcus likely knows that transwarp beaming like regualr beaming can (presumably) be manipulated into being untraceable, he arranged for the TW beam device to be found, counting on some clever minion or other to figure out where Khan had gone. The novelization expounds on his TW beam, illustrating how he ‘hopped’ from place to place until he reached Qo’nos.
I suspect he already knew, and was waiting for a patsy to send after him.
Enter a vengeful James T. Kirk….
280: Eh. You say potato, I say potahto. I actually enjoyed the movie, I’m just not willing to accept every piece of what I see as manipulation without question. I guess it says something for the franchise that people are interested enough to question it critically.
281 – The fistfight I found gratuitous was the last one. Spock tried his neck pinch, but because (in this movie) Khan is superman for real and not just an augment, nothing phases him. Not even phasers. But, to have Spock swinging fists is largely out of character. Nimoy invented the neck pinch because it was more logical than splitting your knuckles on a baddy’s chin.
The gratuitous reference to the first movie was Pine’s overly descriptive reminiscence of napkins up Kirk’s nose. Yes, I did remember, but Pine seems to ask the audience whether we did two or three times.
Anyhoo…
Kind of sad, really. Curiosity is doing a splendid job on Mars, and some fruit loop on a UFO site squeals, “look, a rat!” and suddenly the mass media pays attention.
Then again, we see it here, too. Pseudo-science gets passed off as the real deal, and when someone points it out they get crucified for their trouble. Really, no one should care, but usually it’s the ‘Trek is science based” guys who scream the loudest….
Buzz Aldrin adapting his book for Scifi TV series. He thinks it is better than Star Trek.
http://www.buzzfeed.com/jordanzakarin/astronaut-hero-buzz-aldrin-is-planning-his-own-sci-fi-tv-sho
Might have to read Aldrin’s book.
The speculation on the Martian rat is just stupid. Everyone knows Mars is home to psychic squid.
Hey, it’s Buzz freakin badass Aldrin. The guy makes Chuck Norris cry, so yeah, it’ll be better the Trek, Wars, Planet of the Apes and Powerpuff Girls all rolled into one.
Note to self: learn the definition of “gratuitous.” You know, for future reference.
Back from the Urals.
I hereby once again vow to never fly in propeller-based planes again.
Luckily, the last one I would have flown in (an Antonov 24) broke down before it reached the airport where I was waiting for it, so I skipped the last town on my audit-tour, and just went straight back (home) to St. Petersburg on a cozy Airbus.
PM Medvedev has been trying to ground these planes for the last year, because they routinely self-destruct like tin cans loaded with dynamite….

Got a reply from Bob on Twitter. Khan couldn’t beam to the ‘Vengeance’ because the ship had countermeasures to prevent such an incursion. Seems obvious now that he said it and i kinda feel like a fool for asking, lol!
Of course, I didn’t bring up why those same countermeasures failed to prevent a certain Scottish engineer from stowing away aboard the ship and then sabotaging it. The answer to that is fairly obvious, too — he’s Montgomery bleedin’ Scott! ;)
282. ‘Beach -”Once Harri-Khan had gone rogue, as Marcus put it”
“HE’S PLAYING YOU SON!”
296 – Not buying that. Thanks, though.
Khan could have just flown there like Scotty did and gotten aboard, like Scotty did. Or, he could have beamed to a site (maybe with one of them spiffy space suits) near the Vengeance and again gotten aboard. The trip to Qu-onos is gratuitous to service our need to see a race down the Death Star’s trench and a fist fight with Klingons.
The whole script is a knit-together of convenient coincidences and points the audience expects/will react to. There’s nothing organic about it.
Of course, all great movies have a little BS in ‘em. (Fog in the desert? See Casablanca.)
Again, I’ve said this is a great movie. It is. A great story or great Trek, no.
Hey Charles. When it comes to Scotty. He can do anything he wants. Lol.
Except make Harry Like Ericka.
Oops.
Welcome back Katie. I see Advanced Star Fleet Tach Training has served you well.
How about that I.R.S Dance Video. Lol.
Our film is losing steam at $272m right now. IM3 is at $1.153 billion.
My guess is they’ll nudge JJ out the door to let him loose on Star Wars, and assemble a new creative team.
The idea of bridging the films with an animated series will again be lost on CBS as the marketing machine prepares to close up shop once the film is out on video. Then, the black silence of space.
Anyone remember the Paramount Park to be built in Spain? Well, they haven’t got much done as of last month of this year. Here’s a link.
http://www.themeparx.com/paramount-park-spain/
I truly believe they should’ve built one in the States first. Or Canada.
AJ, if that’s the case then we wont see a new Trek film unitl 2020. A new Trek TV series would never happen for awhile. Unless they reboot Trek on TV and not on Film.
I also wonder what will happen to this site and other Trek sites?
Craiger:
I think this will be a boost for Ben Cumberbatch’s career, and won’t affect anyone in the cast negatively. They were all frigging great, especially everyone.
I think, as many do, it’s time for a TV show. STID was a decent movie. loads better than Iron Man III, for sure, which was a real pile of crap this time around. Trek does not need event-films. It needs constant adventures.
SELL IT TO DISNEY. PLEEEEEEESE…….
Star Trek Belong’s on T.V An Occasional Big Budget Film is ok.
AJ, I thought all the cast was great in STID. You remember Pine’s scene with Pike? I agree with a new TV series. I think it may have to animated not sure if they can do a live action one wouldn’t it be too expensive? One designed like Clone Wars could attract kids to watch it. Maybe reboot as a TOS or TNG animated series? Or an animated series set in the 25th Century with the Enterprise-F or just drop the letters altogether?
@303. Yeah, I seem to recall that a few of us naysayers pointed out that between Spain’s economy being in the toilet, crappy labor markets, and the general lack of capital that a few of us would be dead and buried before they ever broke ground. I seem to recall there was one proposed for Jordan, too, and I don’t think that ever got beyond the ‘won’t it be great’ stage, either.

Matt Smith leaving Dr Who.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-22741493
I am so sad, he was such a brilliant hybrid human/alien prescence. I have finally seen the last episode of this season and thought both him and Alex Kingston were exceptional. The episode to me was rather bitty and odd, but carried through by the acting. I love Strax, and Vastra and Jenny. Vastra is pretty darned gorgeous! I wonder if Who is getting to the end of this (re)incarnation? Each time I thought (since Christopher Eccleston eight years ago) the next Doctor would be no good, but David Tennant and Matt Smith were great, but Matt, particularly in the last episode, was so believable. How can they top that acting?
That’s too bad, Smith was good. I think it would be neat if they would go with a woman for the next Doctor. He could finally regenerate into Ginger and still have Clara. I think they could still do a woman and have River be married to man. No telling when what version of the Doctor she married.
I also like Strax, Vastra and Jenny. I thought it was funny when Strax said “Put that weapon down, Human Female.” Or something like that.
Jean Stapleton of All in the Family has passed. Great Actress.

@309
That was a waste of time from the jump! Maybe they will relocate their endeavors where there’s money and progress to be made…
Craiger said, AJ, I thought all the cast was great in STID. You remember Pine’s scene with Pike? I agree with a new TV series. I think it may have to animated not sure if they can do a live action one wouldn’t it be too expensive? One designed like Clone Wars could attract kids to watch it.
OMG no, Clone Wars has the ugliest animation, no, I say, nononono … but I would watch an animated series that was longer than 30 minutes, or if only 30 minutes per ep., took several episodes to tell a story. With the voices of our new Reboot cast. With good animation, not that awful Kre-o lookin’ stuff. I mean really, you’re gonna take the trouble to create animated characters, why would you make them look like that?
It’s probably more likely that an animated series will happen than a “Mad Men/Game of Thrones”-type series, alas. I like to think the cast could commit to 10 eps a year of quality character- /morally-/scientifically-oriented shows, but who knows [sigh].
@ 318. Marja
I cannnot believe they killed Pike. Lazy ‘our hero has to develop and that’s all we got’ writing. One of the best and most believable characters with genuine gravitas (although IMO mostly to do with Greenwood’s acting talent). It is 6am here, beautiful morning and I should be out on the deck watching the ducks :-)
Pike was a low blow,
Marja, sorry I should have said using Clone Wars CGI.
Unless their is better CGI then what Clone Wars uses?
Fast 6 holds onto the box office title and likely will until Man of Steel opens June 13th & 14th.
Penelope Cruz was cast in the next Bond film, which Sam Mendes is now thought to be coming back to direct. Word is, it’s set to be Daniel Craig’s last film as Bond.
My money would be on Henry Cavil as the lead contender to take over, he’s already being approached for the lead in The Man From U.N.C.L.E. an nearly beat out Daniel Craig last time they were casting a new bond.
I also love how as soon as Christopher Nolan was being approached to replace Mendes, SUDDENLY Mendes could make his schedule more available to Direct.
#322.
I heard Daniel Craig signed on for two more Bond flicks. And let’s not forget that Idris Elba is considered a front-runner for 007 once Craig steps aside.
I think there’s going to be pressure on the producers at EON to hire a non-white James Bond.
I want to see an animated series that’s mainly drawn, with subtle CG elements. The two elements will need to work with each other. CG shouldn’t overpower it.
@323. Red Dead Ryan:
They’re under pressure to reinvent Bond about a lot more than that and that’s sad. Race doesn’t matter to me, it really doesn’t. But i understand it’s still a huge problem for much of the world.
i just wonder if every one would be ok with Shaft played by a white man?
Dr. Martin Luther King Jr or Frederick Douglas? What if they were played by white actors who were descendants of Slave Owners? Ohhhhh Boy.
322. Mitchell
“Fast 6 holds onto the box office title and likely will until Man of Steel opens June 13th & 14th.”
Don’t count out ‘The Purge’ or Owen Wilson & Vince Vaughn’s ‘The Internship,’ both of which open June 7. Both should make be able to debut in the low-to-mid $20 million range, which is also where ‘Fast 6′ will end up. So all three of them should be battling for the top spot.
Having said that, I wouldn’t be surprised if ‘The Internship’ underperforms a bit, coming in at around $17m or $18m. It may reunite the stars of ‘Wedding Crashers,’ but that movie came out eight years ago and this new movie doesn’t look too good. For now, though, I’m thinking it comes in at around $23m.
June 7-9 predictions:
1. The Internship / $23m
2. Fast & Furious 6 / $22m
3. The Purge / $20m
4. Now You See Me / $15m
5. Star Trek Into Darkness / $10m
6. Epic / $9.5m
7. After Earth / $9.5m
8. The Hangover Part III / $9m
9. Iron Man 3 / $4.5m
10. The Great Gatsby / $3.5m

“Khan could have just flown there like Scotty did and gotten aboard, like Scotty did.”
Scotty only got on board because shuttles that were cleared to enter the spacedock. Khan could have only done the same thing if he had arrived at the time Scotty did.
“Or, he could have beamed to a site (maybe with one of them spiffy space suits) near the Vengeance and again gotten aboard.”
The closest site was Jupiter. I wish him luck with that.
“The trip to Qu-onos is gratuitous to service our need to see a race down the Death Star’s trench and a fist fight with Klingons.”
Well, Khan could not access the ship by shuttle or beam to a nearby site and board from there, so… not so gratuitous, after all. ;)
Besides, the Federation was on the brink of war with the Klingons and one misstep would have been costly. Khan knew this, hence why he beamed to Quonos. After all, what better place to avoid capture and plan out your next attack than a faraway planet to which Starfleet could not go (or so he thought)? I wouldn’t be surprised if Khan planned to lead the Klingons against Starfleet himself. This is Khan we’re talking about, after all.

I will join Spockchick in her calling out Pike’s death as lame. And Spock made us all feel worse by saying his last thoughts feelings were fear, confusion and loneliness. And he was persuaded to join Starfleet by Admiral Marcus, who is a bad guy. How sweet.
I was as invested in Greenwood as Pike as I was in all the main characters, and he nails the scene, which is what good actors do.
Remember how alt-universe Guinan described Yar’s death in “Yesterday’s Enterprise?” Pretty much what we get here. I would have preferred he die rescuing “all those kids who were still alive” from Delta rays.
“He’s really not dead, as long as we remember him…” Uh Oh……

Review: Star Trek Into Darkness – The 4D Experience
@330 AJ – The Empath
Agreed. Pike was the best thing about the first film :-( I was also muddled about Admiral Pike’s motives. Was he mad, bad, or did he have a share in an arms dealership? I need to go and see it a second time, but that will be it. Not the 4 times I saw ST09.
I wonder how it would have been not killing Pike and kept Kirk first officer and having Kirk earn his command back in third movie and that is where they go off on their 5 year mission and wrap up the trilogy that way?
Or if Pike had become the bad guy in the STID get badly injured and he would go rouge by the end of STID and in third one Kirk would have to go up against his mentor. Or have that storyline in all of STID?
@ 332, Spockchick
Damn, MARCUS’ motives – sorry.
@ 333. Craiger
It could have been great to have him in the bug chair with Kirk as XO and Spock as science officer.

Marja,
I believe the same woman had some “nice” things to say about me also. And then some other people got nasty with me. Basically called me a sexist because I liked the image of Ms. Eve in her underwear. I like to point out that before anyone labels me, you better know who I am. But a person used a KKK example saying if a person burns a cross in his yard, he’s a racist And if a person likes that image of Ms.Eve they’re a sexist. I will tell you that I’m a liberal, politically incorrect, but a liberal I believe in the Lilly Ledbetter Act, pay equity for women, a woman’s right to choose… etc., etc. Still, if I find Ms. Eve’s image appealing, to some people I’m an evil sexist. So I know how you feel.
By the way, I’ve been called an idiot. Had my intelligence and logic questioned. And you know for what? For deducing that Benedict Cumberbatch was playing ……. a particular character made famous by an actor who liked fine Corinthian leather. Check out the vintage ad below. (When can I say the guy’s name?)
By the way, went over to Eve thread to put my two cents. Expect your friend to thump me and use it as an excuse to proselytize radical feminism. By the way she did agree that the Bechdel Test was radical.
Link. This actor liked Corinthian leather. Hey, get him a show about an island where fantasies come true.

Gratuitous Khanage.
Gratuitous running around.
Gratuitous Nimoyaneering.
Still, fun movie.
Ah well, maybe one day they’ll make a Trek for a big audience that wants to both think and feel. We’ll be waiting.
“Khan could have just flown there like Scotty did and gotten aboard, like Scotty did.”
Scotty only got on board because shuttles that were cleared to enter the spacedock. Khan could have only done the same thing if he had arrived at the time Scotty did.
We swallowed on coincidence, but not if Khan wanted to do it? I question your logic, sir.
“Or, he could have beamed to a site (maybe with one of them spiffy space suits) near the Vengeance and again gotten aboard.”
The closest site was Jupiter. I wish him luck with that.
He could have beamed NEAR the Vengeance station… or onto the side of it. The guy didn’t exactly let the actual Vengeance security system stop him. Too bad the ship didn’t have a computer or sensors or that stuff. C’mon! Again, you’re willing to swallow some chasms of logic but not others of the same general size?
337. CmdrR
“We swallowed on coincidence, but not if Khan wanted to do it? I question your logic, sir.”
The ‘Enterprise’ told Marcus they had captured Khan. Marcus then mobilized his crew to man the ‘Vengeance’ and take her out to meet the ‘Enterprise’ at the edge of Klingon space. Scotty happened along as the shuttles arrived. Yes, it was a coincidence; they do happen.
Before Harrison was captured, there was no reason for Marcus to take out the ‘Vengeance.’ Khan probably could have found taken a shuttle there and risk getting blasted by various defensive measures located around the system, but getting in would have been tricky. I’m sure Marcus altered the security measures once Khan went rogue to prevent him from just flying aboard the ship.
“He could have beamed NEAR the Vengeance station… or onto the side of it. The guy didn’t exactly let the actual Vengeance security system stop him. Too bad the ship didn’t have a computer or sensors or that stuff. C’mon! Again, you’re willing to swallow some chasms of logic but not others of the same general size?”
I’m not sure I’m following you. There was a spacedock and then there was Jupiter. Do you mean he could have beamed near or on the side of the spacedock? What good would that do? He couldn’t get *in* to the spacedock, and even if he could, he couldn’t get aboard the ‘Vengeance’ since shipboard countermeasures prevented it.
The only reason he and Kirk were able to get on board later is because Scotty had sabotaged the ship’s power (weapons, shields, sensors, etc.). And the only reason Scotty was able to get aboard is because he’s a Starfleet officer with clearance who was *not* being hunted by Starfleet for two attacks on Earth.
I honestly don’t see the problem here. Khan couldn’t get to the ‘Vengeance,’ it would do him no good, so he instead beamed to a place where he believed the Federation couldn’t get him: Kronos.
Maybe I’m just too stupid to see the stupidity in it. :-P
Speaking of a great actor who had a penchant for Corinthian leather, found some more videos of him hawking cars.
Can he sell cars, or can he sell cars?

Strange now that its been a couple of weeks since STID premiered that all Trek news has dried up on this site. Except for that one article about the Star Trek: Continues series.
The webcomic Cloud Five, by Tim Harrison, continues its savage analysis of STID (the last several strips show its characters reacting to the film):
http://cloudfivecomic.com/comic/107-crash-and-burn
@343. Well, the overall reaction to the release of the film is spent. Nits will be picked for a while. Foreign box office watching is as exciting as watching paint dry….about the only drama left at this point is whether or not the third installment gets made….and how Paramount handles the few franchises it does have.
Here’s an old L.A. Times article about Paramount. If Paramount goes quiet for a while on the status of a third installment, that may not bode well for another movie in 2016…
http://articles.latimes.com/2012/aug/13/business/la-fi-ct-paramount-20120814
@345. Phil
From that article: “I think we’re finally at the place where we have as many or more franchises than other studios,” said Vice Chairman Rob Moore, the head of marketing, distribution and deal-making.
That seems to be movie-making now. I don’t think we have ever seen such a protracted period of juvenilia. Where is this year’s ‘Chronicle’, or ‘Another Earth’. Seems like it is all done for 15 year old boys. Sigh.
@346 Spockchick
Instead of making movies with heart, soul, intelligence, and feeling, Hollywood nowadays just wants to sh*t out movies about cool dudes who beat the Big Bad down, blow stuff up (extra points if it’s the Big Bad), get the girl, and call it a day as the sun sets on the credits rolling.
That’s why there are so many franchises based on either video games or the cartoons the filmmakers grew up watching in the 80s. Most folks nowadays don’t have the attention spans to sit through a dialogue-heavy talkfest, which Star Trek in its heyday could be. TMP, for instance.
We can blue-in-the-face this subject till it’s , well, you get the idea.
Jonathan Frakes made a cameo on the season 4 opener of The Glades, also directed it. just aired 5.27.13. was really good too!

This interesting quote from Steven Sodeberg (bit long sorry) about the state of cinema. He is on a flight:
“… there’s a guy on the other side of the aisle in front of me and he pulls out his iPad to start watching stuff. I’m curious to see what he’s going to watch – he’s a white guy in his mid-30s. And I begin to realize what he’s done is he’s loaded in half a dozen action sort of extravaganzas and he’s watching each of the action sequences – he’s skipping over all the dialogue and the narrative. This guy’s flight is going to be five and a half hours of just mayhem pr0n”.
Full thing here, and interesting to see his latest project is only on cinema release in Europe. There is an advert first :-(

Ever notice how on home video the dialogue is virtually inaudible while the action sequence ARE LIKE THIS OR WORSE, blowing you through the fugging wall. I think it’s because that’s what they want you to pay attention to. Hey! Audience! Pay no attention the the stupid blah blah talky stuff. That’s why it’s too quiet to hear. Here in just a minute something else will blow up!
It’s pretty fugging ridiculous.
JJ did a good job of rebooting Trek but now I think he is overextending himself with project after project. Now I think they should take Trek away from him and reboot again under someone else. Even Orci and Kurtzman have new projects going on. They left STID to where they could stop after two. Should they put Trek to rest for awhile and come back with new people in charge.
http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/jj-abrams-adapting-rod-serlings-562884
I’m not sure JJ will be as hands on for the next movie anyways. He’ll be very busy with Star Wars for a while. He’d probably be a producer before being director for the next ST movie.
Regardless, Bad Robot will most definitely have something to do with the third Trek movie. So he’ll be apart of it all…in spirit, I guess.

A little perspective….
Soldiers, Sailors and Airmen of the Allied Expeditionary Force! You are about to embark upon a great crusade, toward which we have striven these many months. The eyes of the world are upon you. The hopes and prayers of liberty loving people everywhere march with you. In company with our brave Allies and brothers in arms on other fronts, you will bring about the destruction of the German war machine, the elimination of Nazi tyranny over the oppressed peoples of Europe, and security for ourselves in a free world.
Your task will not be an easy one. Your enemy is well trained, well equipped and battle hardened, he will fight savagely.
But this is the year 1944! Much has happened since the Nazi triumphs of 1940-41. The United Nations have inflicted upon the Germans great defeats, in open battle, man to man. Our air offensive has seriously reduced their strength in the air and their capacity to wage war on the ground. Our home fronts have given us an overwhelming superiority in weapons and munitions of war, and placed at our disposal great reserves of trained fighting men. The tide has turned! The free men of the world are marching together to victory!
I have full confidence in your courage, devotion to duty and skill in battle. We will accept nothing less than full victory!
Good Luck! And let us all beseech the blessings of Almighty God upon this great and noble undertaking.

@375. Finally saw it last weekend. It’s not a bad movie, at all, and fairly well made. I’d recommend it to others, as well….but I probably won’t see this one twice. The chemistry was flat in this installment. I can’t bring myself to suggest the actors mailed it in, but it was close. I’ve heard some commentary that this was to ST09 what Quantum of Solace was to Casino Royale, and I’m not inclined to disagree.
What if they use the Klingons in the third one? Will that mean they have run out of ideas already? Unless their take on the Klingons is different. Say they have Kirk going up against Kang, Kang or Koloth? Would that be been their done that? Some are already saying that about using Khan again.
Sorry I mean Kang, Kor or Koloth.
AJ, Harry Ballz, Lizard Girl…
and of course Emperor Mike….
Great to see you guys. Come on Harry, I’ve seen STID twice. I think it’s much better film than the first one. This one is Star Trek.
Minor Reflection on STID
I think it would’ve been great if Khan was an anti-hero throughout the whole movie. Like somehow integrated into 23rd century life and serving within Starfleet by the end. Not saying he should be completely tame, but just somehow goes in the opposite direction of his original destiny. I think that would’ve been interesting to see.
*****
@Craiger
My personal, selfish desire is to see more Klingons, but I’m not sure if I want to see war with the Klingons in the next movie. To put them in the next movie without a reason doesn’t make sense.
*****
Thoughts for the Next Movie:
I definitely want to see some space travel, some new aliens (foes and allies). I want them to really WOW me with the alien life. Not like the ugly monster in 2009. I know they can do scary stuff. I want to see something really amazing!
I understand where some fans are coming from when they say they’re tired of cliched bad guys. But if there isn’t a bad guy, then what are heroes fighting towards or against? Space exploration cannot be the main and sole purpose of a blockbuster movie. I don’t know what they could do that wouldn’t confuse the casual movie goer.
Remember Iron Man 2? The people that I’ve personally talked to about it said it was their least favorite of the Iron Man franchise. Why? Less action. The action of that movie was significantly less than the first (unsure of the 3rd), and Avengers. Will people say that about a Star Trek franchise that has set a precedence for having tons of action? I wouldn’t mind something with (slightly) more intellectual weight (seeing as I watched TNG and enjoyed it) but I’m not too blind to see that most would yawn through that stuff.
Hold on. Khan can dance too!!! Okay, it’s Ricardon Montalban dancing in this clip from I think “Latin Lovers.” (1953)
Holy captain perfect hair. Khan is better. Ricardo is the man.

‘Beach, is it the phenom of international marketing that’s killing movies? Looks like Soderbergh thinks so. I’m fearful of this too. I guess indie films are the only place you can really see character-driven drama anymore. Tho’ to give them credit, Orci and Kurtzman TRIED. I think they got a bit derailed by the contributions of the Da[e]mon.
Spockchick, Like everyone here, I am so grateful for the sacrifices of the Allies. And the effing bags of luck we had that helped us win [WHEW]!!

I may not have been the first to come up with this. I don’t remember. But nevertheless, it’s a great idea. And it would give us more Cumberbatch in a (possible) 3rd movie!
LG, no, I just meant the layout of your post made me wonder if you were quoting someone else …
It is a GREAT idea and would certainly lend some credibility to their lamentable-seeming choice to use KHAAAAAANNNNNN! [Though I don't know how they redeem him for crushing Marcus's skull and nearly killing Spock, hmmmm. Temporary insanity ..? PTSD?]
The presence of Cumberbatch really seems to be helping the movie overseas. I found his performance riveting, but did get soooo tired of the frownyface.
It’d be lovely to see him exercise some other of his acting chops. But I think he’s one whom I could listen to reciting the value of Pi or reading the phone book.

Spockchick, a VERY belated comment on our mutual mourning for Pike:
I am SO ANGRY Pike died. Near-death could have accomplished much of the same manipulative emotional sting – Kirk could have wept and gone off upset and only later it could’ve been revealed that Pike was alive, but in a very bad way, and is again suffering thru a long recovery. Even today the lack of pulse does not mean someone’s dead – the definition of death has changed a lot in the last few decades. Although Spock couldn’t have got his wonderful insight into the pain and loneliness of death, but cripes, did it have to be Pike whose death he felt? How nice it would’ve been to end the movie with “I’m proud of you, Jim.”
DOUBLE DAMMIT because Greenwood was SO GOOD in the role; he was EVERY BIT the admirable senior officer (I’ve worked with quite a few, most not as admirable as Pike, but god, I’d follow him thru hell). How I loved watching him call Spock and Kirk on the carpet. Especially him reading out Kirk. Those “talking over each other” scenes are always so good, and they were great in the one in Pike’s office. And haha the cockblock! (Let me just say, if I’d been that female I’d have tried to join the conversation, or at least the Admiral!)
And, y’know, who ELSE could say, “Are you giving me *attitude,* Spock?”
What if they could have Pike come back as the bad guy in ST 3? They could have him in the wheel chair but not badly damaged like in TOS, just have some scars on him, no delta ray damage. He would mad at Starfleet for what happened to him and Kirk would have to go against his old mentor? Or would that sound too much what Nero wanted to do in ST 2009?
Since STID has premiered, I guess now that their isn’t any more Trek news I wonder if people chatting here will start to die down? I doubt ST 3 news wont happen until 2014 or 2015. With STID doing ok at the Box Office I guess their wont be any news about a new TV series for a long time also?
Am I the only one who hasn’t seen STID yet? I’m just blazé about it all. Another revenge story. Another big black ship (with a stupid name at that) against poor weak Enterprise. Another movie where there doesn’t seem to be any other ship in Starfleet, even around Earth where you should have a plethora defending it… Then in a Trekweb interview Lindelof is thinking of maybe using Khan again (assuming he didn’t die…) and a war with Klignons… God damn it, nothing original. Can’t these people think of an interesting, mind provoking mystery of the cosmos sci-fi story? I’m pissed.

Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home did not have a bad guy. It did well at the box office and with critics. It was a bold, artistic choice to veer into comedy. It’s a the top of my Star Trek films. It also had an environmental message.

I said “underwear”. Didn’t you notice the quotation marks?!
Quotation marks can be used to indicate a different meaning of a word or phrase than the one typically associated with it ( and are often used to express irony )….mkay ?!
:))
For instance…here’s Renée in her…”underwear”…Jesus…

Underwear…
Don’t you just love them ?!
Seriously. I could answer your question, but, my post would not make it to the thread…I can tell you that!
Anyway, following the debates has always been interesting to me, and as you know, there were discussions on female characters, underwear etc, a *very* long time ago (2009). They were epic!
Ah! Those were the days….

Update to post 326:
Looks like I was right about ‘The Internship’ under-performing; it looks like it will only grab around $17m or $18m this weekend. It may even end up being beaten by ‘Now You See Me,’ which could also make as much as $18m this weekend. That will leave ‘Fast 6′ duking it out with ‘The Purge’ for the top spot this weekend, with the latter eking out the former. I see ‘Fast 6′ making about $21m, with ‘The Purge’ coming in at $23m.
As for ‘Star Trek Into Darkness’, it’s still looking like it’ll come in at #5 with around $10m and some change. There’s a possibility it could be pushed out of the top five by ‘Epic,’ but I expect that movie will trail behind by a few hundred thousand. My predictions for ‘After Earth,’ ‘Gatsby,’ ‘Iron Man 3′ and ‘Hangover’ remain the same.
Weekend projections:
1. The Purge / $23m ($23m cume)
2. Fast & Furious 6 / $21m ($204m cume)
3. The Internship / $18m ($18m cume)
4. Now You See Me / $17m ($59m cume)
5. Star Trek Into Darkness / $10m ($198.5m cume)
6. Epic / $9.5m ($81.5m cume)
7. After Earth / $9.5m ($45m cume)
8. The Hangover Part III / $9m ($104m cume)
9. Iron Man 3 / $4.5m ($393m cume)
10. The Great Gatsby / $3.5m ($135.5m cume)
UPDATE #2
Just saw the preliminary Friday numbers. It looks like ‘The Purge’ will over-perform, topping the charts with about $33m. ‘The Internship’ is also performing better than expected and should grab the #2 spot with as much as $25m. All other projects remain the same.
Sorry, I know this is a bit off topic. I’m just following up on previous posts.
Updated projections:
1. The Purge / $33m ($33m cume)
2. The Internship / $23m ($23m cume)
2. Fast & Furious 6 / $21m ($204m cume)
4. Now You See Me / $17m ($59m cume)
5. Star Trek Into Darkness / $10m ($198.5m cume)
6. Epic / $9.5m ($81.5m cume)
7. After Earth / $9.5m ($45m cume)
8. The Hangover Part III / $9m ($104m cume)
9. Iron Man 3 / $4.5m ($393m cume)
10. The Great Gatsby / $3.5m ($135.5m cume)

Craiger, to paraphrase the promo line from the first Superman movie (1978)…
“you’ll believe a pig can fly!”
Harry, A small block of wood may not have starred in STID, but it did show up at the production meeting and suggest the writers totally rip-off TWOK.
@BB
The Voyage Home is an amazing and very unique exception! I’m not sure if a contemporary audience would appreciate something of that nature without being forced to sit and watch it. How would they market it? Especially if there aren’t any explosion! What would a trailer look like?
But, If Bad Robot did attempt a “redo” or reimagining of VH, I think it would be a great challenge that would pay off if successful.
I wonder how long the latest news hiatus is going to last? Since reading that article about Paramount and JJ feuding over Trek rights and products who knows what the state of Trek is now?
Totally off topic…
Saw “Warm Bodies.” (Dead Boy meets Girl…)

Sexual content: D

All it has going for it is a clever idea and some wonderful (albeit dead) characters.
Jeez, I’m afraid I have to give one this an A-.
Anyone noticed when the new Superman flies and lands stuff seem to breakup and that never seemed to happen in the previous movies? Does he fly so fast now he creates a sonic boom? Or maybe he is still learning to control his powers? I noticed that watching the Man of Steel commercials with Hardees and the Dodge Ram ad’s. Is that just for those ads or will that also happen in the movie?
Superman is like the economy……..sometimes they both experience a hard landing.
People, you’re missing the obvious. We KNOW Supes can fly fast enough to cause the Earth to rotate backwards, which as any schoolkid knows is the same thing as going backwards in time. Of course, he only does this in extreme cases. What you’re seeing in the trailer is Supes looking up and seeing a cloud formation that looks like Margot Kidder’s bust back in the day. The ground shakes as he vaults to the heavens. However, as the wind shifts, the cloud becomes Erica Durance and Supes crashes back to Earth.
Bonus bad joke:
Q – What did Superman say on his wedding night?
A – Careful, Lois, don’t chip your teeth.
Enjoy Man of Steel, everyone!! Safe flying!!
So what you are both saying is I sound strange in my Superman post? LOL.
Q: what did Lois Lane say after Supes and her made love for the first time?
A: “boy, they weren’t kidding about that ‘faster than a speeding bullet’ part!”
Thought some fellow Trekkies might have some fun with this rant about Love gone bad.. in the Star Trek World….

Thought the ideas of the Prime Directive, war, the war on terror (remember the comment by Spock about killing K…. with a missile without a trial; sound familiar?) revenge and death were substantive. Though all that stuff went by so fast that J.J. seems afraid of it being too “talky.”
Oh great to hear from you, Spockanella.

Trekmovie is rejecting me again from home. Posts disappear.
I have read several reviews of “Man of Steel,” and it seems to fall into the “good, not Super” category. Still want to see it. The trailers look like the film borrows heavily from the Richard Donner films.
Also, “STID” the second time around is a much better film for the usual reasons of not waiting to be disappointed or surprised by something, and getting into the performances, and noticing more details.
Off to South Russia for some retail audits…..
Saw it a 5th time this weekend, and only the kicking and bone-crunching get old ….
The performances, though … every one a gem.
I’m still angry Pike died. I keep fantasizing that they wrote a movie in which Kirk and Spock serve with Pike in command of Enterprise. Kirk becomes First Officer and Spock is Science Officer, and dramatic things happen, and maybe at the end of the whole thing, after we’ve gotten to see lots of Admiral Pike in action on the Enterprise, being a superior superior officer [sic], maybe then, after he’s taught Kirk properly, he could be invalided back to Headquarters? Ah, well. I would really love it if the last words in the movie could have been Pike, to Kirk, “I’m proud of you, Jim.”
But such was not to be, alas.
Bruce Greenwood will be much missed in future Star Trek.

Oh, good. Glad I’m not alone here. I’ve tried posting a comment to the sticky thread four times in four different ways. Trekmovie just eats it up.
I don’t think I’ll be coming here that much if this site isn’t going to be updated that much anymore.
@AJ 446
I’m still stoked for Man of Steel. I’ve never seen any of the original Supermans, therefore I am unfamiliar with Mr. Donner or his Supe films. As far as spoilers go, we all know about Superman (kind of), his origins, adult life, etc. So I’m okay with spoilers. I’ve read some comics.
I reaally just want to see Henry Cavill in a form fitting suit flying around, melting things with his eyes and kicking alian butt. If I can mark those items off my checklist then I’m good! ^_^
Last Supe comic I read was called Superman Earth One [volume 1]. It’s a good origins story in case anyone wanted to check that out.
Correction: kicking ALIEN butt
I think Anthony has decided just to make Trekmovie just being about the new movies and that’s it. If that’s the case I can check Collider.com for ST: 3 news.
OK. Now I feel old.
http://www.mediabistro.com/fishbowlla/gene-wilder-80th-birthday_b90083
To those complaining about Anthony’s disappearing acts: This site is not a job, it’s a hobby. Try to remember that.
Anthony has a life outside of this site and, believe it or not, outside of ‘Star Trek.’ When he doesn’t update for a while, it’s because there’s this thing called real life that has a habit of getting in the way sometimes.
“Oh, but he should have let us know he wouldn’t be updating for a while!” No, he shouldn’t have. It’s not like these absences are planned. And what difference would it make if he had let us know? There’d still be no updates and you’d still be complaining about it.
Oh, and let’s not forget the fact that there has been ***zero*** news to write about. That’s kinda important.
Charles T and AJ,
I think there are some characters [not poster characters! "letter" characters! Though some of us are real "characters"] that the site rejects. There was a post about that in the last week or so, sorry I can’t remember who was answering who. If it was on the 1,400+ entry sticky thread, good luck …
Maybe avoid dollar signs and other signs? It does accept queries, parens, brackets, ampersands and exclamation points, but I don’t know about the other types of characters….
Marja
Yeah, I think it was an excessive use of dollar signs and percent signs that did it. One or two are fine, but too many and it thinks you’re trying to spam the site. Fortunately, the site moderator has fixed it and allowed my comment to be posted.

Go out and rent/buy Richard Donner’s “Superman” and “Superman II: The Richard Donner Cut.”
They are simply wonderful, and you get to marvel at just how well-cast Christopher Reeve was as the main character (Clark/Supes). Throw in Marlon Brando, Gene Hackman, Terence Stamp(!), Margot Kidder, Glenn Ford, Ned Beatty, and all the others, and it is 4 hours of entertainment not soon forgotten. Skip III and IV as they are crap, and go to Bryan Singer’s “Superman Returns,” which is a direct ‘Your Worshipful-ness’ tribute to the first two films. You do not have to see them before “Man of Steel,” but see them just the same. I will be going into “Man of Steel” having seen I & II a gazillion times. Like many, I grew up in awe of Terence Stamp’s General Zod, and Michael Shannon just doesn’t seem to have the heft Stamp did. I’ll hope for the best. But really, see those films.
Rotten Tomatoes reviews of all 5 films (NOT including MoS)

Just read how the Superman March that John Williams wrote for Superman won’t be used anywhere in Man of Steel.
Are they mad? Superman March, after his Star Wars score is one of WIlliams’ most iconic works.
Not to use it at least in part is an insult to the man.
Come on, Zack. What were you thinking?
@ AJ
Seen them all. Adored I, saw it in the theater on its release in ’79. Those 70mm widescreen shots of ‘Kansas’ were awesome.
II was a worthy follow-up. Zod calling the planet ‘Hooston’ was inspired. Using someone as villains we just saw in the previous film made perfect sense. But did it take all those years for Kal-El to get to Earth in the pod? If so, was the Phantom Zone sort of outside time? Or do Kryptonians just live longer?
Yes, III and IV are crapola.
Bryan Singer’s Love letter to I and II is decent enough. Routh’s channelling of Reeve was uncanny. Kind of thought Bosworth as Lane was too young. And that kid of hers? Great bit of casting. Looked like he could have been either Routh’s or Marsden’s.
Spacey’s Luthor was chilling. “Now. FLY!”
I can’t believe I’m writing this, but I haven’t even seen the movie yet, and I don’t have Aurore’s excuse as I live in Montreal and the movie has been out for ever… Too busy, or leprechauns, … for whatever the reason, I just don’t feel it. Worse thing is, I’m sure it’s a great movie and I would enjoy it, but it just sounds like more of the same, Nemesis, ST2009, …
I want a Mysteries of the Cosmos kind of Star Trek… Like TMP!
I don’t deserve to be in the presence of true Star Trek fans like yourselves. Aurore, how did you enjoy the movie?

To be Honest. I have seen All of the Trek Movies Multiple times at the theater. But Trek Into Darkness. Only Once. I am not sure if I will see it again at the Theater. I of course will be getting it on Blu-Rey.
I Am so Stoked at Seeing Superman Man of Steele this weekend. I am a Big fan of that Franchise. From The George Reevs to the Saturday Morning Cartoons to Chris Reevs and even Brandon Roths and of course Smallville and now we finally have another new one.
@ 466 CmdrR
@ 477 Emperor Mike
I went a 2nd time only coz it was a friend’s birthday. I enjoyed the acting very much the second time (particularly Chris Pine who was excellent). I did find it a bit ‘campy’ second time, and it flagged a bit in the 2nd half before it all kicked off with Admiral Marcus. Plot gaps were still there – why have to go get Harrison in a shuttle? Why could they not use one of the 72 to help Kirk? Spock’s scream at the radiation scene was silly. Don’t even talk to me about Pike.
But, still enjoyed it a lot. Loved what they did with Scotty, particularly his integrity. I am however perturbed at the fate of Hendorff after the Klingon altercation. I looked and looked and couldn’t see him for the rest of the film :-( I heart Cupcake.
@475
Silvereyes, I’m in the same boat. Haven’t seen the movie yet, don’t care when I do.
Maybe it’s a Canadian thing……..but, wait, then there’s Aurore.

Spockchick,
Scotty’s stance is another theme in the movie. Starfleet. Military or space exploration Or both. i remember reading a Communicator article where a Navy Trekker says Starfleet is a military organization whose primary purpose was space exploration. Can’t disagree with that. But the war thing bothers me.
@ 481
Sorry to hear that.

What’s cool about it is that all of the games are downloadable (no more discs!) and you can demo them all for free. It looks like a solid, reasonable device. If the games are excellent then they’ll find a niche.
Why was STID a great Star Trek movie? Lots of reasons, but the one that stands out upon reflection, is that Kirk gave his life for the greatest love he ever knew…The Enterprise.
We saw that he would implied time and time again in the original series, and in The Naked time, he even said it. “Never lose you…never.”
Spock and McCoy were his best friends, and his ship was the love of his life. STID got all of those things right, and holds its own among any of the best Star Trek films.
#470, AJ, the dragon doesn’t look so familiar (tho’ it could really use some CGI improvement).
But the trailer music, ahh, there’s an old familiar series of thumps! and horns! Yikes
#482, BB, Re Navy guy, pooh! I think Starfleet’s a “paramilitary” organization. The primary missions being exploration, scientific inquiry, first contact; the secondary mission humanitarian: search and rescue, and the third, defending the Alpha Quadrant (the Federation’s “territorial waters,” so to speak).
Starfleet is the Coast Guard of the future! ;D
War thing troubles me, too (It’s why I joined the USCG instead of the Air Force). I’m hoping that Scotty’s voice and those like his prevail in the next movie.
sincerely,
Retired Coastie
Harry Ballz, you scamp! Just remember there are plenty of us feminist cougars who would equally love to see Mr Quinto in his undies ;)
Just saw MAN OF STEEL. and it is by no means a bad movie, Not Even Close to it but it is a fantastic major let down. Not anywhere near as good as we were led to believe or the trailer’s teased.
It is however the Anti-Into Darkness–in that every time it’s about to fail and just slap you in the face This movie saves itself and treats you to a dazzeling display of amazement but it just doesn’t hold. Or fly.
I’d give it a middle C grade and by just barely.
“Basically, as we went the casting process and we began honing in on the themes of the movie, it became uncomfortable for me to support demonizing anyone of color, particularly any one of middle eastern descent or anyone evoking that. One of the points of the movie is that we must be careful about the villain within US, not some other race.”
_______________
Provided they are talented, actors should be given a chance to do their job, irrespective of their ethnicity.
I personally was not interested in a Khan/Botany Bay/”Augments” story.
Still, since the powers that be obviously were, they should have given an opportunity to Indian/South Asian actors to show what they could do with such a role. In my opinion.
If Star Trek is truly about “going boldly”, I think the powers that be missed an opportunity to present a character perhaps never seen before with the franchise; an Indian Khan Noonien Singh. In 2013, I dare to assume that many people would not have found the notion ridiculous…
Ideally, the part would have been so well written that even I would not have complained (too loudly) about the presence of this character in the sequel.
Everybody loves a *good* villain.

And 498 ‘Beach, thanks for the kind words, mon vieil ami!
@501. Three pictures is an option. No one gets paid if it’s not made.
@503. Yeah, that’s what the business pages are saying, too. Recall, though, that before Trek 12 was even released that Paramount exec’s were very public with support for 13. This time around, there’s been a lot of silence. What we know:
– BR has a first look contract with Paramount
– JJ’s busy with SW’s into the foreseeable future
– Even though Bob tends to be cryptic with all his answers to questions, he’s been almost uncharacteristic with his ‘who knows’ replies.
My guess is the studio has a magic number in terms of total revenue, and possibly foreign revenue, that the movie has to hit before they go public with an announcement. In my opinion, we may not know when that is until the Blue-Rays hit the market, which means nothing until the end of the year. In my humble opinion, which could be very, very wrong.
::transwarp beams in::
Guys, stop worrying about whether or not Paramount will greenlight another STAR TREK. It’s going to happen, you just gotta have patience. It has nothing to do with the box office; the studio is already making a profit from the film. As Curious Cadet, Buzz Cagney and I have pointed out on the sticky thread, there is likely what amounts to a power struggle that is delaying the sequel from moving forward.
J.J. Abrams basically gave Paramount a slap in the face by agreeing to direct STAR WARS. He is not likely to direct the next TREK. There’s a possibility he’ll be taking Bob Orci, Alex Kurtzman and/or Damon Lindelof with him to the Dark Side, leaving them unavailable to write the next movie. This is a problem because Paramount will want the next TREK out in *three* years, not the four it took STID to arrive.
What Paramount is doing now is exploring all of their options and trying to lock in the writers. If Bob, Alex and Damon are unable to commit, they will have to look elsewhere. The studio needs the writers and producers locked before they can announce that a third film is going forward.
We haven’t heard anything about Orci and Kurtzman *not* writing the next TREK, which means they are currently still in play to write it. But the deals are not yet in place because no one is sure who will be doing what and when they can do it.
So no more doom and gloom because Paramount hasn’t announced the next movie yet. It will be, and likely with Bob and Alex returning as writers. But no one is sure yet, no deals have been struck, and Paramount is exploring multiple options should said deals fall through. But we *will* get a sequel to STID; that much is guaranteed.
Oh, I almost forgot…

Hey Charles. I agree with you. The Stars are Locked into a 3rd movie. I believe there is a wealth of Talent of Writers and Direstor’s and Producers who can make a Wonderful Trek Movie. Let’s just hope they go for the best of the best.
The Enterprise aircraft carrier is back.

Yes, I really liked Scotty this time round and his questioning of what Starfleet was ‘I thought we were explorers’. His whole story was really interesting. Incidentally I went 1st time with Mr Spockchick who is not a Trek fan at all. He thought there was a good amount of McCoy, he really liked Uhura/Spock and Spock in particular, not at all finding him to be OOC.
Sometimes I think we Trek Fans spoil it for ourselves (not meaning you dear) because we can’t take a step back. Mr Spockchick really liked the film even more a second time. I guess if only Trekkers went it would not be a hit.
Man of Steel, 56 Million so far.

Looks like The Man of Steel is now the Man of Money. Lol.
Hello people, don’t know if I’m on the right site to do this but can anyone tell me which Star Trek book covers when Captain Picard and Dr Crusher actually get together and have Rene. I read loads of the books but seem to have missed this one along the way somewhere. can any one tell me£
Here’s some Trek news you missed:

Thanks for the heads up on OUYA video game console. It looks like I will be defecting from XBOX. Goodbye Master Chief. Tears. Microsoft’s requirement that you check in once every 24 hours on the Internet is a deal breaker for me. It reminds me of that old Apple Computer “1984″ commercial where they take on IBM. Link. has original commerical.

For laughs, comedian Lewis Black takes on new technology and the upcoming XBOX One. He goes over a feature that has the Germans worried about privacy.

There were multiple themes in Star Trek Into Darkness. War. The War on terror. Death. Remember Spock’s comments about going to kill Harrison? He was worried about shooting a missile at a person who did not have a trial. Sounds familiar? It’s about the US drone program. We have killed American citizens without trial. See the killing of al-Awlaki.

Marja,
First, thank you for your service.
Says,
“Harry Ballz, you scamp! Just remember there are plenty of us feminist cougars who would equally love to see Mr Quinto in his undies ;)”
What? No love for Karl Urban? Dr. McCoy loses again.
Saw Man of Steel.
2 1/2 hours of punching.
I feel much the same way about this movie as I do about STID. Both are as visually stunning as modern movies can be. Neither left me with deep thoughts or feelings. In 10 years, the visuals may well look dated. (Try watching Superman II and ignoring how bad the opticals look; but at least that movie is fun. MoS is all scowls. Seriously, how many scowls do you need in one movie?)
Anyway, it’ll make a mint.
I see Harry is still causing Mischief. Lol.

Mike I read some were wondering if that female Army Captain in the TV spot looked like Erica Durrance. LOL.
I saw the best film I’ve seen all year this evening, ‘Behind the Candelabra’ with a show-stopper of a performance from Michael Douglas. It was witty, sad and really a film about lonliness. The acting was uniformly excellent with some actors unrecognisable. Rob Lowe is a hoot, Dan Aykroyd is hidden beneath big sideburns and glasses and Scott Bakula looking uber-sexy in his big pr0n-star moustache and long hair. It was a great script and felt incredibly real. 10/10 for me. It is a crime it didn’t get a cinema release in the US, because Douglas deserves an Oscar.
I saw Man of Steel. I thought it was great. The some of the audience clapped at the end.
521 – Being male, I found it a bit uncomfortable to watch, but it was well done.
@ 523. CmdrR
Mr Spockchick winced a couple of times, but said the worst scenes for him were the surgery! I just shut my eyes at those parts :-)
@ 522. Craiger.
After the Commander’s review ’2 1/2 hours of punching’, I’m not so sure. STiD was 2 hrs of punching. I think I am done with all the punching! Also I saw the first Christopher Reeve one the other night. I forgot how endearing and vulnerable he was as the bumbly Clark Kent. I fear there will never be a bumbly Clark ever again.
Man of Steel $125 Million so far. I guess their will be a Justice League movie. I think the WB said they wanted to wait until they see the box office numbers before going ahead with a Justice League movie.
http://collider.com/weekkend-box-office-man-of-steel-soars-to-new-june-record-with-113-million/
Spockchick, Christopher was great as Superman but I don’t know if I like the bumbling Clark. Smallville’s season finale had him that way. Even Clark said to Lois what makes people think you would be interested in a guy like him? I forgot what Lois said about that.
@ 526. Craiger
Many women think the bumbly man is a challenge, ‘Aw bless him, i can fix him’ kinda thing. Personally, they are cute to look at, but would drive me bonkers!
Here’s the short review for Man of Steel 3D. Exciting but sullen. Considering that New Agey trailer, the film is somewhat cold. This movie is not inspiring. Don’t think John Williams Superman theme works here since the movie is so cold. Still his march overwhelms everything and defines Superman.
Skip the 3D version. It’s a conversion from 2D. First twenty minutes are good but then the movie goes flat. No pop or depth. Save your money. The 3D version is nothing more than a cash grab. Nothing super here.
The grade is B. Here’s my full review with the final trailer.

FX is showing Superman Returns right now.
New sheriff in town. Assistant editor Matt Wright has shut down the threads with the angriest voices early. Those would be stories concerning Alice Eve’s underwear and the fan made films. I’m sure this is going to disappoint those who want to call me sexist, an idiot, and evil. I’ve been called the first two and there was an implication that I’m evil. Of course, I have already said I’m evil so here’s more proof. I find my evil self in the basement of Empire market and allow the women to oogle a male employee.

Blogger. You are Evil. That’s why The Empire Loves having you. You are not Soft and flakey. But You get the job done.
Long Live the Empire.
It’s been almost half a month since we had a new article. Any chance we’ll get something new soon?
@533. Probably not.
@530. I suppose if you want to keep grinding that organ, you could hop over to one of the open threads. Good luck with that…
I’ve read some negative things about Man of Steel, but I’ll still see it (not in 3D though).
I don’t understand how they plan on doing a Justice League. Some of the characters aren’t as well known as Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman. Unless they introduce the League over the span of 3 movies…
@534 Phil “want to keep grinding that organ”
Now where’s Denise when you really need her??
:>)
@ 534
Phil,
The sticky thread is still open for you.
@ 535
Lizard Girl,
I’ve talked to a friend who loves Man of Steel. He said it was very exciting. That’s true. I think the movie is well made. But it doesn’t have the mythic vibe that Superman (1978) did. Man of Steel is kind of joyless. But if you’re a fan of the modern comics, I’m guessing you’ll love the movie.
Yes, save your money on seeing it in 3D. It’s a conversion from 2D. Snyder did not want to shoot it in video also. Another problem for the conversion. The result is that after the first twenty minutes, I stopped noticing any 3D.
Hey I was wondering, when I finally decide to get off my a$$ to go see STID, should I see it in 3D or 2D?
I’m thinking 2D, if this kind of detail was so important to me then I should have been at the cinema in May…
Silvereyes save your money. I saw STID and Man of Steel in 2D they still looked good. 3D costs more.
@ 539. Silvereyes
I saw both, and I would say save your pennies and see 2D. 3D IMO does not provide anything extra.
Ok. Lets just see it in 2.5 d. Lol.
Thanks Craiger and Spockchick, I’ll take your advice…
Oh, not much going on on the sticky, now, either. Without any news on Trek 13, I suspect things will get very quiet.

This is an interesting article about Easter Eggs in Man of Steel. Spoilers if you haven’t seen it.
http://collider.com/man-of-steel-easter-eggs/#more-262730
@ 539
Silvereyes,
Both STID and Man of Steel 3D are conversions from 2D. I must have seen more than thirty 3D movies. I cannot recommend any conversion except for Transformers: Dark of the Moon (2011) which was a terrible movie. And Transformers was not a one hundred percent conversion. Half of it was filmed in 3D. Let me say this. Converting a movie is like creating a cinematic pop up book. Link. You don’t get the light, shadow, nooks and crannies of the real world.
Converting a movie; a cinematic pop up book.
http://www.slate.com/articles/news_and_politics/explainer/2010/01/how_do_you_convert_a_flat_movie_into_3d.html
I have seen both movies in 3D. Neither one was special Man of Steel was good for the first reel. Then it went flat. Did not notice the 3D after the first twenty minutes. Star Trek Into Darkness was done differently. Director J.J. Abrams did 3D passes of empty sets. That helps the conversion but it’s still one big pop up book. The only effects that had a popping effect were CGI warp trails. Both movies are cash grabs. Save your money and see both in 2D.
If you get a chance to see these movies at the theaters in 3D; do so. The documentary Pina and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo. Both movies were shot with 3D cameras. In Pina, I literally thought the dancers were in the theater with me.
Could this guy be the new Doctor Who?
http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/celebritynews/10108234/BBC-asks-James-Bond-star-to-be-its-new-Doctor-Who.html
547. Craiger
BBC already denied that story.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/newsbeat/22843008
516, BB, Y’know, I’d be fine with seeing Urban in his undies too – oh wait – he does that on a dare at fan conventions … :) … hmmm would be welcome in a movie too.
Besides, you may have missed my suggestion for how the shuttle scene could have gone down, with McCoy also changing, and grumping to Kirk, “Yeah, turn around, Jim, what kind of reputation are you trying to build with your female officers? Good god, man!”
As for plain old 3D I can take it or leave it. I liked the 3D IMAX, but I get the feeling that’s mostly because I love IMAX. The warp effect was super-cool. But what you say of “pop-up” books, yes, that’s what bugs me about 3D. It doesn’t seem “organic”. But OH WELL IT’S A MONEYMAKER.
*sigh*
