Creative Team FAQ
Are the filmmakers Trek fans?
Yes
Director J.J. Abrams is a Trek fan, especially of TOS and TNG, and he very much wanted to have Trek be his next movie for Paramount. The writers are be major Trekkies (especially Bob Orci). Producer Damon Lindelof is also a big time Trekkie. Exec Producer Bryan Burke is not a Trekkie, but provides a good balance to the rest of the team.
Is Rick Berman, Brannon Braga or other previous Trek producers, writers or production people involved in Trek XI?
No
When Trek XI was announced one of the first official statements from Paramount stated that longtime Trek producer (and chosen heir of Trek creator Gene Roddenberry) Rick Berman was not involved in Trek XI. It is possible that some Trek alumni will get involved at some levels, but the leadership of the project is entirely new.
Why was JJ Abrams chosen by Paramount?
Paramount has expressed quite a bit of confidence in JJ Abrams starting with his work on Mission Impossible 3. Well before that film’s release it was reported that new Paramount chief Brad Grey was very impressed with Abrams and wanted Abrams to sign on to Paramount for a long term contract. It is believed that it was Abrams himself who wanted Star Trek to be part of that deal and Grey agreed. When it was finally announced in mid July, Trek XI was officially announced as the first film of Abrams new 5 year dal.
