Today is Naked Time Remastered Day

The Enterprise crew catch a virus that removes their inhibitions.

Video preview / Local Station & Showtimes / More at Memory Alpha

TrekMovie will have screenshots up tonight, and a review by tomorrow.
What to keep an eye out for beyond the usual establishing shots of the ship:

  • early shot of Psi 2000 mountains and clouds
  • multiple viewscreen shots of planet Psi 2000 coming in and out of view as it shrinks
  • Fixing the missing phaser beam ‘goof’ of Scotty cutting through the wall into engineering
  • new ‘timewarp’ effect
  • …and of course Spock totally losing it

NOTE: The episode guide has been updated…next week’s episode will be ‘City on the Edge of Forever’ and not ‘The Managerie Part I’

so what did you think of Naked Time Remastered?

Since my my channel changed to the new CW I no longer get remastered Star Trek!

Sulu’s helm clock is also replaced with a new digital model. Instead of ‘Hours, Minutes and Seconds,’ the clock lables are ‘Stardate’ and ‘Shipboard,’ and the lights change from red to green when the clock starts counting forwards again.

I liked the Helm Clock, the early shot of the Psi 2000 Outpost and Psi 2000. After that — the glimmer of hope seen last week in “The Devil in the Dark” has disappeared. Scotty’s Phaser beam we knew was coming as it has been an early topic of conversation. But the lack of any attempt at imagination regarding different angles of the decaying orbit, the ENTERPRISE heating in the planet’s atmosphere (the viewscreen doesn’t count) and the Time-Warp Effect (reproduced exactly the same) was deflating. Then a slap in the face with that terrible ship shot at the very end (is that the same one from “Miri”?)

Last week’s hope has given way. Or as Bill Maury in “Stripes” would say —
“… and then, Depression set in.”

I was wondering if they’d replace the old analog clock on Sulu’s control panel. I’ll see it for myself in about an hour, and then sometime thereafter I’ll have screen captures up for all to see.

Tooo bad about the same old ship effects in the time travel part… I was really, really hoping for SOMETHING more imaginative and exciting than a reproduction of the ship sitting still in space and wobbling as if dangling from a string. Only difference now is, it’s a digital string.

Wasted, wasted, wasted opportunity. Shame on them.

“slap in the face”, “Shame on them.”

You guys need to get some perspective.

I thought the time warp effect was fine, let’s be realistic here, I can’t think of too many people that have experienced an honest to God timewarp to ask for reference so, as far as these episodes, when in doubt enhance what they already did.

A starfield coalesced into a singular mass with outflowing stars can represent reverse time, sure, why not?

I think it’s preferable to a Lens Flare light show that I guarantee alot of people would have tried to insert in.

This was a HUGE mistake for Paramount. There are fan films that create better effects than what I saw on this episode. The viewscreen shots are good, but the scenes of the ENTERPRISE (which are some of the most important shots in the whole series) are fake and one dimensional. They missed a great opportunity to swap out some of the viewscreen shots with the ship coursing through the atmosphere, adding even more tension to this episode. I know they wanted to stay true to the original, but — it’s a pity. I’m heartsick.

I really enjoyed this episode. The film transfer was gorgeous. The viewscreen effects were a HUGE improvement over the “spinning plaster of paris ball” effect of the original. The time warp effect looked fine and I had to smile when I saw the updated chronograph shots. I loved the series when it first ran in the 60s and TOS Remastered has made me fall in love with it all over again. I can’t wait to see “City” next week. That and “Doomsday Machine” are my 2 favorite episodes.

Some of you guys are wanting them to reconceptualize the show.
They are embelleshing where the oppurtunity arrises, not re-imagining, there is a fundamental difference.

Finding a balance between appeasing the purists and catering to the “go for it” crowd CAN’T be an easy task for anyone involved, let’s show some restraint, respect, and courtesy here and accept and enjoy the series for what it is, not what it isn’t.

Feeling “heart sick” and saying “shame on them” is easy to say when you aren’t spending your week laboring in front of a computer monitor putting your work out there for all the world to see and judge. I daresay these guys doing this are doing it more out of love than a fat ass paycheck.

For what this project is it is ABSOLUTELY fine and true to the stated original intention. It is bringing Star Trek to the 21st century not making it Babylon 5, Battlestar Galactica, or even Enterprise silly.

I also think it would have been nice for them to trade a couple of viewscreen shots for an exterior shot showing the ship so close to the planet that no black space is seen. There were quite a few viewscreen shots…replacing one of two with a bit of eye candy would not have hurt the episode. I loved the chronometer changes and the planet spinning was great. Missed the beginning due to the football game running over, I think this is going to be a regular occurance here in Texas, sorry to say.

I have to admit I felt somewhat cheated with the planet’s collapse and the imploding of the engines. Not that the restoration was bad, but the preview from last week really showed some nice effects around the ship, all orange and weird looking. Also strange distortions were featured that I thought were going to be part of the time travel segment. Of course, they weren’t in the episode at all. Just a cool effect to make a good promo. Sigh. Well, it made me look forward to watching the episode …darn shame the show itself didn’t have the effects from the promo that hooked me. So a word of caution…what you see in the promo for next week isn’t a guarantee of what you’re going to get.

They added an actual station on the planet surface which fit with the interior. I enjoyed seeing that. Old Joe Tormolen still got infected with the original effect: good call. The creeping red water always seemed eerie to me. I always enjoy seeing a nice new clean planet and clear viewscreen. The planet surface fit in with the story. Scotty with the phaser beam looked great The helm clock update, what a nice touch to see the ‘stardate’ & ‘shipboard’ under the numbers.

The ending flyaway looked so much like a model, filmed in high contrast as it looked in some of the old opticals. It seems they haven’t added small details that weren’t on the original model at some point. I like that. Possibly some lighting could be changed to show the scale of the ship as it’s passing by? Some shots of the ship look fine, some too lighted and clean. But it’s not HD, so that might be in play.

Nice work all around, it’s remastered with more or less the same angles, etc. That’s fine, when all the original fans die off then they can go back and do it their way and take it to the limit. For me, the show is just looking better and is a gift I thought I’d never see.

That’s the beauty of it, TJ – unless we all get wiped out by an asteroid impact or something of that scale, there will always be a future full ‘clean’ versions of Trek to be either enjoyed in their original state *or* “[taken] to the limit” whenever tech advances allow. I don’t see why both camps can’t eventually be made happy (unless they choose not to be, emphasis on the word ‘choice’)…

In the time travel parts I was expecting something like in Star Trek IV where the ship has the yellow exaust comming out, but the time clock was cool. Otherwise ok episode.

Hey if we don’t make it known that we are disappointed, then nothing will ever change. I get irritated at the “shut up and take it” crowd.

I thought this was BY FAR the best episode remastered so far. I thoroughly enjoyed what they did with it. I also noticed that the nacelles weren’t such bright orange and weren’t so prominent….as many have bitched about that the past few weeks. Frankly, I think it’s going to keep getting better and better.

No one is saying “shut up and take it”, the dilemma is what exactly is it that you are dissapointed by, and more importantly what does the “I’m dissapointed” crowd expect to happen as a result of their dissapointment?

There is no clear consensus anyway, so what sort of message does that convey and send?

For every person dissapointed, evidently there is someone that isn’t.

You are dissapointed. I am not. So if the producers of this project adopt YOUR sensibilities, it may dissapoint me, and we begin quickly seeing where that goes.

They are sticking to their guns despite some fan outcry about doing MORE, I admire that, it takes far more gall and guts to hold back, then cut loose.

Addendum-

Does anyone think these CGI artists are NOT tempted with every episode to absolutely go all out?
They are restraining themselves, whether too much is debateable, but I’d rather they hold back then start indulging a bunch of fan wankery and ruining classic episodes.

Replacing a viewscreen shot with an exterior of the ship is the sort of thing that is not going to happen. That would be a creative change to the episode. The script says whether or not each scene is interior or exterior. They can change what the shot looks like but changing what the shot is of gets into editing the narrative, crossing the line. Now that that’s clear, I expect no one will complain about this again. Thank you. ;-)

Josh, for cryin’ out loud, just knock if off. You’re proving our point anyway — they should have just left it alone!

I disagree, Cal. I have lots of friends who seldom if ever watch Star Trek (TOS) that are checking this out. As silly as it sounds, they say it makes the original worth watching…and now they are discovering the great stories. Heck, I used to always steer clear of things like Lost in Space and Doctor Who when I was a kid because their special effects always look horrible compared to Star Trek. For those of us that love the original there is always G4 and/or other places to watch, not to mention the dvd’s. Frankly, I just love that Star Trek seems to be making a comeback! If enhancements here and there are all it takes to revive it, we should feel lucky.

I knew nothing about this effort until three days ago, when I landed on this site. I was thrilled, until I saw the first ‘enhanced’ Trek last night. Being an avid TOS fan (I’m 44 years old, and watched them first in the early 70s while in first-syndication), here’s my take:

When George Lucas chose to redo the first three “STAR WARS” movies with new effects, he did so in the spirit of ‘finishing’ the movies in the way he would have done it had the tech been available in the 70’s and 80’s. He also took the opportunity to ‘add’ some scenes to improve the overall product. If Roddenberry were still around and were ‘directing’ this effort, I think the addition of such scenes would be very appropriate, and all enhancements made would become ‘canon’ due to its creator’s tinkering.

But Roddenberry’s dead. So the issue, in my view, is whether or not enhancing the show’s effects will be accepted as ‘canon’ without the creator’s input. When Lucas did Star Wars over, the fan base largely accepted the enhancements, proven largely by box office receipts and DVD sales. However, with no Roddenberry involvement, and with so much fan disagreement over the new Trek effects, I suspect this will be controversial for a long time and will make the entire effort potentially apocryphal.

In summary, I would say the new efforts are — to quote Nomad — in ‘ERR-ROR, ERR-ROR, MUST AN-AL-LYZE ERR-ROORRR…”

Mike Okuda & the CBS digital crew are desperately trying to avoid the “ERROR” of screwing up a modern piece of filmic mythology the way Lucas did. They are being conservative with their restoration- that’s RESTORATION, not embellishment. The same mistake was made a few years ago when Red Dwarf was re-released with added and redone digital effects, which totally sucked.
No, the new fx are not perfect, and I have my gripes, (Those nacelle domes…and why stars the size of headlights??) but I admire the philosophy behind what they are doing, and in my opinion, they’re doing it right.

STL, it’s true, I do want them to basically redo the shots as they have been, but I also want to see completely new shots. Like the ones in “Devil” where the horta burned into the rock & at the end where the ship went flying by the camera. Those were much better then the originals.

So, I’m hoping they change some shots and make some new ones, too. And then also keep the best of the originals.

Your right, there is the original still out there for us old fans. Hey, here’s an idea, not just two versions, but three! The original, the remastered and the super remastered with everything changed! Sheesh, I’m a sucker for this stuff, I’d have to buy all three!

Cal if by “proving your point” you mean I am satisfied with the results being produced on this show and ultimately at the end of the day that’s all that matters, then yes, I suppose I am proving your point.

Thomas-

SHHHH!!! Don’t give Paramount any MORE ideas, I’m going broke as it is! But, what you say actually has merit, as long as all three version are kept around as “available”.

I actually prefered the old analog chronometer to the new pixie bulbs! I’m also glad they kept the creepy blood drops the same. Liked the planet exterior and Scotty’s phaser beam was about right for an IR blaster.

However, a closer look tells me the ship’s exterior paint must return to the glossy, light “sky blue” of the original. The flat haze gray of the CGI just doesn’t do it for me. According to the colors I saw, the hull and the bridge seat-backs ought to approximate each other.

300 is a great movie full of visual effects and graphics which made it different and much better.
Acting was great, director did a wonderful job and chose great actors, full of action, and it is based on a true story.

Test drive http://bwiuk.com/demo2.html is very easy to grasp; have a look – it is funny and one may get an idea at once. I can recommend to everybody. If somebody is worried, please e-mail me. I will inform upon receipt of the first profit.

I do not know, whether it is possible to ask such questions in this section.

Hi, I’m Sonja,

As you may have guessed, I am mad about bargains.
I am a wife, a mother and I have run my own recruitment business for over twenty years.
I make my living by giving the best value for money so when I spend it I expect to get the same.

I love quality items, five star cruises and generally the good things in life and I have found
that I can afford more of them if I get them at bargain prices.

This Blog http://bargains-hunter.blogspot.com is for bargain hunters to share information
so we can all get the best value for our hard-earned money.

Cheers

Sonja

I’m always interested in any new really really good books. I haven’t really come across any recently. Do any of you know of any?
I also read that this month a book called Nixon and Mao was going to be released, but I don’t know much about it. I also heard that The Bounty Hunter will be released soon.

I just got this at http://www.wow-advantage.com and it totally rocks.

My stats are insane now.

World of Warcraft is so much more fun now.
