This is the first remastered episode from Star Trek’s third season. There isn’t a whole lot for the CBS team to work with here, but expect to see:

  • New planet Scalos with various shots of Ent in orbit
  • New matte painting of Scalosian city
  • new effects for phaser ‘area sweep’ and slowmo phaser
  • A redone opening title sequence with blue text and new Enterprise model

Expect TrekMovie.com’s screenshots and videos later

So what did you think of the remastered wink?

The matt painting looks great!

“Wink of an Eye” was not one of my favorites but I found it one of the most watchable episodes of the shows third year. Looking forward to it.

Hoping for evil to befall the wonks at WSB-TV in Atlanta. After putting last week’s episode on at 1p Saturday, this one is back to 2:05a Sunday. And that’s if something doesn’t run long. May evil befall you, you wonks! Evil, I say!

During the summer of 1969 this was one of the episodes I taped on 5″ inch real-to real tape. I remember fondly the music, the soundtrack, the opticals and the story. Today’s broadcasts leave out items that were related to the original performances on NBC.

Because Star Trek was a drama and in so many ways listening to it evoked the imagination in the mind’s eye. Certainly, a fan could tape it and listen to the story.

That’s why so many original series fans could recite line-for-line everything in the teleplay.

I certainly welcome the updating of the series.

Not too much opportunity in this week’s show to really wow you. The Enterprise-in-orbit shots were pretty well in keeping with the more recent shows’ quality, the SCalos matte painting was as gorgeous as has been seen here and elsewhere (and it turned up a lot – I had forgotten how many times it turned up in the episode), and the tweaked phaser and energy weapon shots were subtle but improved. I hadn’t seen this wpisode in a long time, and the upgrades did not at all call attention to themselves. I think the “speeding up” effect was unchanged from the original version …?

Also, its too bad the idea of CG set extentions are outside the budget and mandate of the remastering project. I would love to have seen a jazzed up environmental engineering design in place of one of the original walls. I imagine it would be a very expensive and time-consuming project. Fun to think about though.

Not much redone in this ep. I was disappointed that they didn’t correct the viewscreen shot that had Chekov in it when Lt. Hadley was in that chair just a few moments before. The E looks great. It’s nice to see a third season ep. The effect from the Scalosian weapon appeared unchanged. Deela is beautiful as always. The matte painting is a great improvement over the original. The “Scalosian Effect” appeared unchanged. I’m looking forward to next week and WMNHGB.

How did this site miss the opportunity to get this incredible shot of the Skalosian skyline when Ain’t It Cool News? somehow managed to snag it?

Oh, and before I forget, why is the phaser beam now green instead of the typical blue?

They wanted to keep up with the Star Wars merchandising with the different colored light sabres. :)

Gotta say I always love this episode because of Deela….drool!!!! Looks even hotter remastered. My favorite Trek gal, Dr Helen Noel being a close second place! ;-)

I always liked this one, and tonight’s viewing was no exception. Although I prefer the original slow-mo blue beam with the white core to the green one added for this episode, I can understand it if they are trying to establish some type of consistancy. But the blue beam is much more electric and powerful looking than your standard red or green “laser” beams. The multi phaser sweep in the corridor was very nice as well. Of course the Scaloisan city was georgious and expertly placed. The departing shot of the enterprise was very nice, with a close fly-by that allowed me to see a lot of detail in the ship. Very nice. I haven’t seen this one in a good while, it was a lot of fun. One of the better “bottle” shipboard episodes. Bring on Gary Mitchell!

Wow, the final fly-by of the Enterprise was positively breathtaking…

Green Phaser Beams indicate the “Stun” setting.

Let me be the first to say, “regards to Captain Dunsel”. Seriously, I totally agree, loved that new departure shot of tne Enterprise. Really cool-CBS Digital rocks!

I’d just like to toss out there that the actress who played Deela, the lovely Kathie Brown, was married to the late and particularly terrific Darren McGavin – a guy with a decidedly Shatner-esque charm and twinkle-in-the-eye.

Tommy Jenny… romantics like YOU allow me the patience to deal with every effing dizzznick and gizzzneek a-hole that ever says “must have” about the new movie, and “nacelles” about the remasters.

I, too, used to TAPE RECORD not only the epiodes growing up, but also took my Sears tape recorder into the FOX theater (College Ave and Prospect Ave, Fort Collins Colorado) on the day that TMP premiered. My mother graciously tolerated this, knowing the importance to me.

IF you still have these audio broadcasts, being a smite older than myself.. wow. WINK OF AN EYE was always my favorite episode growing up. YOUR romantico earns a very highly valued “mac-mercedes OF macINdaPANTS” from old h69.

may you lay down with many many many promiscuous women.

best!!

#13. I haven’t seen the remastered version yet but I watched the original the other day and the phaser beams were green. Unless there is one I am forgetting the slow-mo shot on the bridge was green and the sweep was as well. I thought they just updated the sweep giving it the visible beams rather than the full screen green glow.

I watched portions of the episode, but -to be honest- I was more interested in watching the Saints beat the Eagles…

The opening credits were bad… they kept the singing instead of putting in the loud ‘dings’ (I prefered the Third Season theme to the first two)… and when they came back from the opening commercial, things had already started to go wrong way too quickly (i.e., syndication cut).

As I kept noticing cuts, I just decided that Eagles/Saints was far better than sliced “Wink”.

Oh man, that’s great and funny. I appreciate your comments in paragraph two. I didn’t know I was a romantic. But please, don’t call me Tommy Jenny (it cracks me up, I know it’s gonna stick…)

But anyway….you know, as I was recalling taping the shows, I was thinking it would be great to have kept the tapes. Which, of course, I didn’t do. I had all of summer 1969’s reruns and they had bottom-of-the-hour audio/video picture breaks and voice-overs about “next weeks show”. Like that, my man.

It’s always disappointed me that the original shows were never released with these items added. The opening of “next weeks show” was altered for some reason on the vhs release and have never been restored. (Like that, too.)

I’m glad to read that someone other then myself was mentally-ill at the time, taping star trek, in your case TMP. Amazing! And yes, I did like the move when it came out. It was the first Star Trek in 10 years and I let myself become immersed in the film. Toward that end, I now very much appreciate the updated version. It made the film better.

And yes, I am single and your salutation to me is much appreciated!

DUTCH TILT, mothergrabbers!!

=h=

I am watching the episode now. Tommy Jenny baybeeeeee!!!

Deela has just taken shat by the hand. Intercourse to follow.

Life is good.

we MUST get this remastered episode to TommyJenny!!!

demonoid.com, too

dude let me know, we will repsectah TOmmyJenny

best!!

It’s kind of funny that a goofy third season episode actually gets me to post, but I have to say it: CBS Digital just gets better and better with the rendering of Enterprise. I look forward to eventually having all of the episodes in a hard copy. Damn, they’ve found a way to get me to spend yet more money…
I can’t wait for next week.
BRING ON “HOT LIPS” DEHNER!!!!!!!

Hitch, you crack me up! No, I just use my panasonic digital video and get it from the local Sacramento station. I’ve never missed it before, so I guess they didn’t show it for some reason. No big deal, I’ll get the download summary from here. Heck, I’ve got the dvd’s, and for some reason I know the dialog…. heh…

Ref: #4 & #18

You guys weren’t the only ones tape recording them. Hitch’s story sounds very much like mine. I used to rush home from school in the early 70’s to get my tape recorder out in front of the tv to record the show. I always thought ST would make a great radio show as I would always replay those things again and again. I was one ticked off little jerk back then if somebody would come into the living room and start talking! Now I’m glad they did as those people aren’t with me anymore. Listening to my Dad make smart ass comments over Spock’s lines to McCoy in Trouble with Tribbles are very funny to me. I still have some of those tapes too.

Sorry that had nothing to do with the subject but it just struck a cord with me and I felt like sharing. I’ll shut up now.

Longwinded, ditto the comment about being a jerk if anyone made a noise during taping. I finally got wise to the technology and secretly took the back off the TV and got a cord with alligator clips to the speaker wires for a clean audio experience. I got in trouble for that, but continued using it as I explained that everyone no longer had to be quiet for the taping. (Which didn’t happen anyway). I finally got all the episodes on tape with no part cut out (had to tape the re-runs multiple times). Served me well when driving to track meets back in the day.

My dad used to call the show ‘Sky Track” to piss me off. It’s his fault I never became an astronaut!

:) I think I still have some cassettes (and earlier reel to reel) tapes from when I recorded the TOS episodes off the air. I became quite adept at excising the commercials from the recordings as I made them… but now, in hindsight, I wish I hadn’t… cause the occasional mistake of recording them was a nice look into that time.

I used to tape a few and also get p.o.’d if anyone talked. I remember listening to “The Enterprise Incident” over and over. I may still have some of these somewhere. I am almost motivated to look.

You know, those third season 5″ tapes I had from the NBC summer re-runs had a unique sound ambiance. The transmission from NBC to it’s affiliates just had something. In retrospect, it probably wouldn’t be so great to hear today.

Regarding sound, they’ll never do it because well, it’s CBS’s baby now, but I’d love to have the new HD versions of the show start off with the NBC logo peacock before the teaser. Of course, even if CBS wasn’t involved, it wouldn’t happen anyway.

It’s obviously not important, but it kind of makes the shows new again in a funny sort of way.

Cool idea, Thomas…one other thing I remember is that the trailers for “Next Week’s Voyage” had a voiceover by the actors…”This is William Shatner, join us for next week’s episode of Star Trek…” Not sure if Shatner was the only one who did this….and I only remember it because one of the stations here accidentally ran it after one of the re-run idea.

But, I’ll even go a step further…I wish there was a way to see the episodes wth the original commercial bumpers (short slide of the Enterprise with a abreviated Trek theme) and the original commercials from first run…now THAT would be something.

Dood!!!! If they are the NBC broadcasts, I would love to hear those! Do you recall the actor voiceovers on the trailers that I mentioned and the commercial bumpers?

Man, you all are bringing back some memories. I used to record shows on audio cassette too. I used to record Trek (reruns only) on cassette and Space:1999 (first run). I laugh when read posts saying they got pissed off when people talked or made noise while they recorded…that ME to a T. LOL Then, we got a TV that had an earphone jack and I could record and listen at the same time with the sound going directly into the tape recorder…that worked great and problem solved.

THEETrekMaster

My dad was an ass about Star Trek too…even though he liked science fiction. He introduced me to the most of it…including The Outer Limits. But for some reason, Trek was/is not his cup of tea…still mystified as to why…LOL

Oh man, I just stumbled on a box of my Trek audio tapes made on WCCO and WPIX in the mid 1970s. WOO HOO!

I originally hanged a mic over the speaker, but later rigged up a cable from the headset output to the mic input. Even learned to put a resistor in there to lower the level!

A few of the early syndicated episodes had the network “Stay tuned for exciting scenes from the next Star Trek” on them. Cool!

I also tape recorded numerous interviews iwth the cast on shows like Merv Griffith.

Somewhere else I have a scrapbook of newspaper clippings about Trek. Notably, there are a few Space:1999 clippings because it was the first major SF program to follow Trek and it was the natural comparison.

WOOHOO!

Cool Stuff “OldTimey”…

Was the “Stay tuned” message voiced over a slide or was it actually part of the trailers? Is this the one voiced by Shatner that I mentioned in an earlier post?

Speaking of which, I question whether some of the trailers on the DVDs are the orignal trailers..why?

1.) they all have the same shot of the Enterprise — which was at least a second season FX shot at the begining of them

2.) the title on the trailer is not in the Star Trek font and looks like it was put together strictly for the taped releases back in the 80’s.

The trailers for seasons 1 and 2 look edited for video.

Am I correct on this? Any old timers out there who would know for sure?

Guys, this is great…. I wasn’t the only one taping the shows! One of the deals was: “This is Leonard Nimoy, stay turned for exciting scenes from our next Star Trek” . Shatner did this as well. This was a bumper right after the 4th act when the show ended. There was a picture of the enterprise as they did the voiceover. The commercials and ‘next weeks’ show trailer ended the hour with the end credits.

And yes, those titles on the trailer for next weeks show were redone for the VHS releases. The originals had the ship in it’s nose down position flying toward the camera before showing ‘next weeks show’ with a little special audio. There was a bumper after the 2nd act at the bottom of the hour, which had a picture of the ship and a standard audio proclamation that the show was Star Trek. This bumper rotated with another with every other show.

These things have all been lost in subsequent releases of the show on various media. I don’t know what was on the laser disks.

I wish they would put this stuff all back in the future release for HD DVD. The most egregious is the ‘next weeks show’ they butchered the opening as compared to the original run on NBC.

38. THEETrekMaster – January 16, 2007

Looks like Tommy Jenny TM hit that one :-) This is a great blast from the past.

Someone earlier mentioned the ST 45s. I have at least one of those in a box somewhere… a whole bunch of the Trek comic books and that “Star Trek Logs” with the wierd “dossiers” on the crew.

#12 Jim J – Helen Noel. Oh man, I still love her! Ohhhh. Shiver me timbers.

Here’s one for you old timies: I had a point and click C126 and a B&W developing kit. I’d took photos of the tv screen and developed them into contact prints. Hot stuff for a 6th grade boy, no?!

I hope my own son will have such memories when he’s in his 40s…

Thanks for the insight OTF!!!

Looks like they kept the trailers intact for the third season DVD releases…as that description you gave is identical to what is on the third season trailers.

The ones that were apparently edited were the first and second season DVD trailers. I know these go back to the VHS tape releases. I do not know if the laser discs had the trailers or not…I would assume if they did, they were identical to what was on the VHS tapes as these were all released around the same time.

NONE of the releases had the “This is William Shatner or This is Leonard Nimoy, etc…lead in’s”.

I agree, they should put this stuff back in, but since the HD DVD discs will be the remasters, I highly doubt the old trailers will be on the discs or any of the other things that have been previously overlooked.

Unfortunately, I would guess these items of minutiae are gone forever…sadly.

Yeah, they won’t put anything back in. We’ll be lucky if we can get someone to listen to reason about the opera singer mucking up the title music. ….I know, I’m all over this, it’s my personal vendetta.

It’s the mixing…the mixing is terrible.
