Sinise Denies McCoy Rumor

Long ago this site suggested that Gary Sinise would be an excellent choice for the Dr Leonard ‘Bones’ McCoy. In February IGN took it a step further by reporting a rumor that Sinise was in talks for the iconic Star Trek doctor. They even had a follow-up article detailing how issues were being worked out with Sinise’s schedule to allow him to work during the hiatus of CSI: New York. However, two weeks ago TrekMovie.com reported that the Sinise rumor was not true. We also reported that IGN’s other rumors of Matt Damon as Kirk and Adrian Brody as Spock were not true and that Paramount was looking at younger actors for the film. Now Sinise himself has denied the rumor publicly, telling the Washington Times it was a "bad rumor." So that’s that. Add Sinise’s name to the growing list of those who have been associated with the film. For a full list see the TrekMovie.com Cast FAQ.

Sinise’s age had been a point of contention with many fans. But I was among those who thought he had been channeling Dr. McCoy for years anyway and could overlook it.
At any rate, I’ve always thought he was a great actor.

Well, I can definitely see the resemblance, and if the movie were set later in the Trek timeline, I wouldn’t mind seeing him take up the medical scanner. But it makes sense that they’re looking for younger actors, and maybe someone lesser known wouldn’t be as distracting. People would say, “There’s Kirk or Spock,” and not, “There’s such-and-such playing Kirk or Spock.”

Regardless, I’m excited for Christmas 2008!

Thank goodness. I like Sinise, but I don’t think he is right for the role of McCoy.

Sinise would have been perfect for the part, but hey, that’s the way the Klingon grumbles!

I noticed the add that Paramount is now offering “Jason of Star Command” on DVD. Isn’t there anything higher on the wanted list then this #$@%@? How about “The Invaders”… now there’s a show that deserves to get the star DVD treatment!

Hmmm…I want The Invaders AND Jason of Star Command.

I want Land of the Giants as well…but I am somewhat irritated Fox is going to force fans to buy the entire series in one fell swoop.

Sorry about repeating myself. To do feel strongly about what I said, but I guess its the last time I send any message after drinking Romulan Ale!

Sinise would have been great….

Now I guess they’ll get some twenty-something no-talent from Felicity or Smallville or some shit like that.

Ugh.

I hate to say this but it might be cool if they break all the rules and go new “Battlestar Galactica” on us… and change it up. Look what they did to Star Buck, Tigh, etc.

I’m open to JJ’s ideas. It WILL be a different Star Trek, probably darker (cause that sells tickets) and probably more dense with plot, sfx, and tone, cause that’s how they make movies in 2008 and not TV in 1966.
I would have like Sinise in the role, but I’m patient.

Dark gave us Nemesis….and that sucked.

Next one had better be FUN. FUN like TOS!

I’m not saying Mccoy needs a eye patch, but a darker tone would be a nice change of pace. “The Voyage Home” was one of my favorite films at the time, but after a recent viewing it slipped a little in my rankings. It appeared to me that it just didn’t age as well as some of the others….and “Nemesis”…it wasn’t dark, just awful.

Speaking of no-talent, let’s hope they don’t cast Ryan Gosling as Kirk! He is the most boring, weak-chinned actor working today!

I liked the idea of him as McCoy except for his age. It will be fascinating to see who the big three are.

James Spader as Captain Kirk(the younger version)
William Shatner as Captain Kirk(the older version)
If you have ever seen Boston Legal, you can’t ignore the resemblance..it’s there..it could work!!

Gary Sinise as McCoy would work very well too. You really can’t get a younger man to play a role that was cast for a man in his mid 40s.

That’s my two lincolns…..

OK, OK… I’m 44 and from Atlanta. I’ll take the role of McCoy, so stop bugging me.

Ok, Ok…CmdrR, your screen test will include a salt shaker, and the line “he’s dead Jim”. Bring your own Mint Julep.

James Spader as Captain Kirk: I love it!

I like Spader, but he’s at least ten years too old for the part!!

Actually, as a Boston Legal fan, James Spader would be a astroke of genius. :D

Never say never. Sinise – McCoy . Paul McGillion as Scotty. Ray Liotta as Christopher Pike. The right age for the right part. A young Dr. McCoy fresh from the Star Fleet Medical Academy? Julian Bashir maybe, McCoy no.

Matt Damon as Kirk ? Yes. He is quite capable of handling the adventurous and the romantic parts. The character is a take-charge kind of guy , who gets thrown into predicaments and works his way out of them through luck and inspiration.

Cast sockpuppets. That way everyone will like it.

Wait are they saying hes to old for mccoy at that point? Mcoy was quite obviously older than Kirk. He was perfect.

Kukla, Do you really think that sock puppets are the answer? You know then we would all be clamoring about the best type of sock to represent McCoy.

Thats a real shame. Sinise is a fine actor and add that to the fact his resemblance is almost spot on and that he comes from the same part of the Country as DeForest Kelley its hard to imagine anyone else for the role.

I really hope they take there time to get the casting right and that JJ doesn’t just employ all his old friends.

I agree that his age would have worked against the hoped-for zillion sequels but doggone it he would have been SO good! He is a consummate performer and would have kicked tail as McCoy.

Spader would have been a good Kirk but is (at least) 10 years too old now…

if he was abround 32 or something then yeah.

Mrregular-I like the way you think!

I think we’ll all forgetting that just because he’s not involved now, doesn’t mean that they will never approach him. It could still happen.

BTW, I saw a DVD on the shelf yesterday, “Bugged,” or something similar, which featured Jimmy Doohan, (in his last role I assume) and George Takei! I may pick it up once it hits Wal-Mart’s 5.88 bin. If I can find it under the ever-increasing mound of Mexican movies.

I’m as disappointed to see Sinise is out of the running as “Bones”, as I was cheered to hear that Adrian Brody was out as “Spock”! Sinise would have been GREAT in my opinion. Oh well, it will be interesting to see who IS eventually cast.

#25

“Argyle” to portray Montgomery Scott?

Personally, I hope they do this movie between the Cage and the Menagerie, then the second between TOS and TMP.

But a real shame Sinise probably won’t be in them.

I’ve never been convinced that McCoy will even be in this movie. If it’s early in Kirk’s career, he wouldn’t be around, and even if it’s Kirk’s early command of the Enterprise, he wouldn’t be around because the doc was Piper. And if the only time we see McCoy pop up, is in a hallway for 10 seconds, just so we can all point to the screen and say, “Hey COOL, it’s McCoy”……well I’m really not interested in seeing it happen, I hate that kind of “clever” name-dropping, fanboy, storytelling.

#33 Not bad…not bad… “crew socks” to portray the incidentals? Ok,…that was bad!

I think it is a better idea to find actors who exude the qualities we like about Kirk and the rest rather than worry about their age.

I would like to see them cast at the approximate age that they were when the series started. Then start over at the time Kirk takes over as Captain and forget canon. Be respectful of it when possible, but not be handcuffed by it! Otherwise everyone will nitpick every difference.

What a great movie it could be with the right cast! But putting in kids just to fill seats is a mistake! Look what happened with the new Superman movie!

I still think its a hack to take us off the scent

In my opinion James Spader doesn’t really look the part to play Kirk but sometimes his voice is so similar to William Shatner’s that it can get confusing if you close your eyes while watching Boston Legal. Try it, you’ll be surprised.

I personnaly would prefer a good actor that can sound like Kirk than a lookalike with a ridiculous voice.

The voices of most TOS actors were so integral to their respective character’s that, even though I am french, I could never stand watching a french version of a star trek movie. I always travelled 50 miles to the nearest big city to get to see the movies in English.

Red Crew Socks for Moonwatcher and Kukla

Jonboc. You are right about McCoy not being there at the beginning of Kirk’s start-up, however you still need a Gary Mitchell – Ben Affleck. Spock is already on board under Pike.

Yeah, but will Spock have those long bushy eyebrows? If not, I am not paying one plug nickle to see this flick! ;-)
