Pegg Talks Scotty + Fuzz Wins Empire Award

At the Empire Awards in London on Sunday, Empire Online tracked down Simon Pegg (the new Scotty) and put the screws to him to get him to talk a about the super-secret Star Trek. Pegg kept mum about plot details, but did say he was finished shooting except for “some effects stuff” and that he though the film is “going to be fantastic.” He also talked about his predecessor and geeking out on set.

Pegg on the original Scotty:

Everything is just a tribute to James Doohan and it’s his role. I’m just very honoured to be able to step into his shoes. I just hope I do him proud

On his favourite moment, ‘as a Star Trek geek’

Just being there on the Enterprise, it was incredible. You’re going to love it.

Fuzz wins, Pegg loses
As for the Empire Awards, Hot Fuzz , which was co-written and starred Pegg, was up for four awards. The film took home Best Comedy, but was shut out in the remaining three. Pegg lost out for Best Actor to James McAvoy (who ironically was one of the actors rumored to be in the running for Scotty). A full list is available at EmpireOnline.

Hot Fuzz is the second film collaboration between Pegg, actor Nick Frost and writer/director Edgar Wight (the first being the zombie comedy Shaun of the Dead). Wright told Empire that he is already working on the planned third and final film for the so-called ‘Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy’ which he hopes to do after his his next project “Ant Man.” So far the only detail he would give is that it is a “comedy and a cross-genre in a similar way.”

Wow, first? I’m relieved to finally hear some commentary from Pegg, first from Doohan and now here. He seems to really treasure the role. There’s always been a comic side to Scotty, and it’s easy to picture Pegg in the distraught, she canna take no more setting, but I hope we’ll see his heroic in-command side as well. The Scotty who throws the first punch.

I Loved Hot Fuzz!
The movie went the distance,

Will we see a drunk Scotty this time out?

Notice his darker hair? :)

I am in love with Simon Pegg…he is my favourite ginger-man

Frost looks more like Scotty in this picture! lol….

Pegg just has a certain likeability that the character of Mongtomery Scott absolutely requires. Doohan was a loveable, bighearted guy, and that made Scotty loveable, and nothing less will ever do. I think Pegg’s a great choice, and the more I see about him in the role, the happier I get.

I’m sure Pegg will do a great job, he’s been excellent in everything i have seen him in, from comedy series such as black books and Spaced, to films such as Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz which were truly awesome, and if you want to see Pegg in a non comedic role, look no further than British SciFi legend Doctor Who, where he plays a villain in an episode entitled the Long game.
I’m looking forward to the new film, and i’m still as angry as yosemite sam that they moved it to May lol

A truly respectful and cordial statement from one of the re-casts. For me personally, there is no way I will ever actually regard the new casts as Kirk, Spock & Co., but having this appreciation for the original actor and for the role, I think that Pegg will be able to do a fine job for a new audience.

i can see him doing really well i think his roll will be the best in the film truly great tallent cant wait to hear more from him i bet he ll be good on the jonathan ross show !!

ps loving the fact all but one prem team got knocked out the fa cup first time in 100 years :-)

Hair looks good.

He looks James Doohan y’ know. This is gonna work.

Heh I liked this part of the article:

“We tried everything we could, short of pulling out a fire-arm or viciously beating him about the head and neck, to get something out of Simon Pegg about the plot of Star Trek. He wasn’t playing ball, so we subjected him to wedgies of galactic proportions.”

Anyone who has yet to see Hot Fuzz needs to get on the case. Trust me.

13 its not as good as shaun of the dead

This is going to work, the man looks the part and he should have no trouble acting the part, so none us of need to worry on this score. Abrams must have seen enough in Pegg to be convinced that he was the right man for the job.

14 – True, but what is? It’s still a great film.

Fortunately, I had the privilege of meeting Mr. Pegg. on the set back in February. Watching him play the part of Scotty was a real gift and something that I will never forget. Simon says that he will play the part as a tribute to my Father and after seeing him in action, I must say that my Father would be proud to pass the torch to such a fine actor. Simon did a great job and we are honored that he is filling my father’s space boots.

PS You’re going to LOVE this movie!!!!

#17 Chris your father was wonderful actor I genuinely liked him as Mr Scott and I have no doubt that Simon Pegg will be great in the role.

thanks chris

Nice to hear from you Chris.

Chris,

Thanks for the encouragement about the movie! You are in a position to know.

Well, reading that from Doohan is GREAT!! He’s really proud that someone is doing his father proud and he agrees. That makes us proud!! Hey, suppose we get Shatner’s daughters on the set and let them talk about Pine being James Kirk, huh?? LOL

I know I am going to get slammed for that extremely bad joke!!

#17. Chris Doohan

Hey Chris thanks for the information. I can’t think of anyone better to say that Mr Pegg has the seal of approval as Scotty. What I would really like to know is did Simon look anything like this in his Starfleet costume?

I know you have signed a agreement not to spill the beans, so just nod or shake your head ;)

Very cool week here at trekmovie, apparently! We got Nimoy, Pine (finally!), and Pegg, and I got a lot of catching up to do.

Peace. Live long and prosper.

#24 great to have you back Vulcanista, we’ve definitely missed your input on the topics.

#24
How’s your tan?

I didn’t think they’d be able to top Shaun of the Dead, and then I saw Hot Fuzz. I hope they keep it up for their third collaboration!

#24

I got a pretty good tan, but no one can see it ‘cuz I came home to winter!

And to keep it on topic, “Hot Fuzz” is now in my Netflix queue.

Peace. Live long and prosper.

I was born in Scotland and James Doohan is the man!
I hope Simon does him proud and I’m VERY glad Chris Doohan is involved in the film.
Thanks for chiming in Chris!

Thanks for the comments Chris! Did you get to work with Pegg during your cameo??

I’m sure Pegg did a fine job but McGillion will always be my favourite for the part…casting is a subjective issue though of course! I’m sure if Pegg gets your seal of approval he’ll work out fine!! Roll on May 2009!

And ditto #13 If anyone hasn’t seen ‘Hot Fuzz’ go see it, it totally ROCKS!

#17. Nifty beyond words that you could participate.

Welcome back Vulcanista.

I loved “Hot Fuzz” and “Shaun of the Dead”. I have both movies in my DVD collection. While I was dubious at first, I think Simon Pegg will do a great job as Scotty. I am so looking forward to Star Tek XI.

#17
Honour to have you with us!

oh and welcome back Vulcanista!

Chris#17- It means a great deal to know of your enthusiasm concerning the film and Pegg’s portrayal of Scotty. Pegg’s kind words in honoring your father must make you feel twice blessed. Thank you for the comments.

Vulcanista- Missed you! And we need to talk…

Look who is back #35 Denise! I have been respectfully asking your whereabouts as well as Vulcanista?? Welcome back to the arena!!

#32, 34, 35, 36

Thanks to you all! See my mini vaycay review in the chat. :-)

Peace. Live long and prosper.

She’s baaaaaaaaaaaaaack!
purr

CmdrR- Was the purr meant for Vulcanista or me (hint: you better say both of you, ladies!)?

Denise, you know purr-fectly well that the compliment was for both you lovely ladies!

It’s nice that he’s wanting to pay tribute to Doohan, but since he’s not playing the same character, I’d like to see more of Pegg in this version of Scotty.

#40 Hey Harry glad to see your back, its kind of cool that Chris Doohan likes Pegg in the Role of Scotty.

Thanks, Garovorkin….it’s good to be back!

The more I see Mr. Pegg, particularly with his darkened hair, the more he seems to look like Scotty. I think he will be good.
