Great Links: USS Sombreroprise, Irish Spock, Spock Monroe + Trek in the City

Ever wondered what the USS Enterprise would look like if fans really had a say in the design, find out below in this weeks Great Links. Plus we try and answer the questions big questions — Did Gene Roddenberry discover Spock in an Irish pub? What would Marilyn Monroe and Spock’s love child look like? What if Trek and "Sex and the City" crossed over?

The Sombreroprise
If you ever needed proof that the new USS Enterprise for JJ Abrams Star Trek should not be designed by a committee and adhere to all fan requests, one only needs to look at the ever evolving images of the ‘USS Sombreroprise’ which was spontaneously created by creative denizens of the TrekBBS, within a discussion about "Should the Enterprise have blue warp nacelles." There are many steps in the evolution of this ship, here are just a couple of my personal favorites:

TrekBBS member ‘NCC-1701’ demands Abrams "give fans what they want", notice Shatner is on board, as is Worf and some touches of BSG, and Bob Orci’s flames on the side…and of course a Sombrero

TrekBBS member ‘EliyahuQeoni’ takes it further and produced the following "because Can(n)on is obviously a primary concern with the new movie"

Spock inspired by painting?
In an article titled "Spock may have had a touch of the Irish" in the Irish Independent, they posit that our favorite Vulcan may have actually been inspired by the painting "A Bird Never Flew on One Wing" by Harry Kernoff, which was painted by in the 1930’s and sold in auction last week for €180,000. TrekMovie is dubious.

From Trek’s missing Irish-themed episode?

Picture of the week: Spock Monroe?
Speaking of Spock-inspired art,
LA photoblogger Paul Stumpr spotted an interesting promotional poster for the new ‘Life is Beautiful‘  art show opening up in Los Angeles later this month.

UPDATE: David from artshow2008.com has let us know that the Monroe image is from LA artist MBW, who we actually featured on a previous ‘Great Links’

Logically sexy

Video of the week: Trek and the City
Our old friend Kelvington was inspired to make another Trek-inspired trailer, this time fusing "Star Trek IV" and the new "Sex and the City" movie.

lmfao at “Get Circle Kirked”!

In the future, everyone will have 15 minutes of being logical.

Hilarious! (And all in all– a decent trailer in its own right)
Makes me want to see ST IV again.

The USS Sombreroprise’s nacelle caps look cartoonish.
Love that she’s a low-rider now, though.

Wow, are these leaked pics of the new big E ??? I love it! (sorry couldn’t resist), very funny though.

Denise, would you want blonde-eyeshadow Spock to download his shared data with you????

Spock Monroe…that’s just wrong!

This just proves Spock time travelled alot. Maybe the new movie might explore this fact.

the fully functioning Kirk Pez dispensers are my favorite.

I don’t know who designed the Sombreroprise, but they’ve sure got the pule of the fan community!

Abrams would be wise to listen.

I’ve seen other similar Spock posters, presumably also part of http://ARTSHOW2008.com. I tried looking for them online but didn’t see any. I keep meaning to take my camera with me around LA to see if I can see some more. But the only ones I’ve seen appear to use Spock from one of the pilots. It’s high-contrast monochrome on what appears to be either beige or tan poster paper (unless it’s already just worn paper). This Spock Monroe is definitely an even more post-modern take on post-modern pop art.

Hmmm…

That article at AMC is pretty cool. Why such a small note about it? I can’t believe it’s been nearly 2 years!

I like the KITT scanner on the front – nice touch!

Anthony, you and I share the same favorite Trek movie, so we do have that in common. See, I’m not all that bad.

And all I can say about the Sombreroprise is…………..

THIS IS A DISASTER!

Spock Time Traveled with “old” Finnigan?

How nice to see the red scanner working on the Enterprise, the upgraded version of the M-5,

I guess will be called the M-6.

congrats to trekmovie and Anthony, the best trek site on the web!!

“Get Circle-Kirked”…now that’s classic. LOL This site never fails to inform and entertain. Thank you, Anthony and all the others involved.

Folks, this is how to get Shatner into the new movie without treading on established canon.

Commodore#5- If that were the only way to procure the data in question, I suppose I could be openminded enough to do so (grimace).

Thanks for featuring us, Anthony! You rule! :-)

Anthony, congratulations on the article and site recognition, although we already knew you have the best site on the web.

The story of Natascha Kampusch is heartbreaking yet encouraging at the same time. She is a remarkable young lady.

I wonder if Spock is a “natural” blonde?

for those interested about the marilyn monroe spock, it’s from an LA based street artist that guys by MBW (mr. brainwash). here’s some of his other spock related work:

he’s a fan of star trek particularly spock, and if you’re in LA later this month i’d say to check out the show!

artshow2008.com

david#23- Thank you for the links – MBW did a fantastic job on the building-size murals, and Spock had his own hair (wonder how long it takes to paint a giant Spock on the side of a building…)!

yepa! yepa! andele!!!

instead of the classic: “space…the final frontier”

i want the sombreroprise!!!!

Glad to see Mr. Fusion included… that way the Big E can stay green by using its household garbage to feed the flux capacitor.

The Enterprise was created by man.

It evolved.

It rebelled.

There are many registries.

…and it has a sombrero.

I’m dying of laughter from the “Trek In the City” trailer. I like both SATC and Star Trek. Not everyone knows the Kim Cattrall selection, so I like to shock and awe people when I tell them that I’m as big of the SATC series and movie as I am of the Trek franchise. They always think it’s such a bizarre combo… although, c’mon. It’s no more bizarre than Commander Riker being married to Laura Spencer. :p

uh….no.

*laughing at Sombreroprise*

I like the Knight Rider scanner.

That spock Monroe pic made me laught out loud! So funny!

And I must say I’d be a very happy carbon unit if the new E looks like the sombreroprise! seem to solve all our problems too… :D

I doubt Gene Roddenberry got the idea of Spock from that painting, but it really is an eerie coincidence!

I’ve seen that painting in a lot of newspapers here this past week (it was hanging up in a pub in Baggot St. in Dublin before it was sold, apparently), and I’m ashamed to say I never did make the Spock connection. I’m a bad fan :(

Loved the collaboration effort on the new E.

BTW, everything change on it was run the the canon checker and passed with flying colors. This could be the new E. It just needs a horse eating sugar cubes.

Congrats to Mr. Pascale on his major award. I think he wins a leg lamp to put in his front window.

Should I be attracted to Spock Monroe?

Hey all,

I seem to remember reading in one of Nimoy’s autobiographies that he was Marilyn Monroe’s acting coach at one point early in his pre Trek career. I wonder if the artist knew of this or if its just a coincidence?

Next thing you know, someone is going to build a model of the Sombreroprise and it’ll show up at Starshipmodeler.com or culttvman.com

THIS IS A DISASTER THE IDIOT THAT MADE THAT POSTER PUT THE TNG COMMBADGE ON THE ORIGINAL SERIES MOVIES UNIFORM AND IT’S BACKWARDS AND THE RANK STRAP IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THE UNIFORM AND THE COLOR OF SPOCK’S EYELINER IS WRONG CLEARLY THESE PEOPLE DO NOT KNOW THE FUNDAMENTALS OF TREK THIS IS A DISASTER

I finally took pictures of the Spock I saw described above:
