ST09 Cast Watch: Saldana and Nimoy Talk Movie + Pine Named Future Star + more

It has been a busy week for the stars of the Star Trek movie. Below we have excerpts of Zoe Saldana (Uhura) and Leonard Nimoy (Spock Prime) talking about the new film, plus Chris Pine’s turn at Kirk has already garnered him a film industry honor. We also have more on what’s up with Zachary Quinto (Spock), Simon Pegg (Scotty), and Eric Bana (Nero) below.

Nimoy talks Quinto and Starfleet Academy
Leonard Nimoy (who reprises his role as Spock in the new Star Trek) is bringing his "Full Body Project" photography exhibit to the University of Alabama, opening later this week. In a new interview promoting the show with the Birmingham News, Nimoy talked about the new movie. Here is the excerpt from the article:

And although Nimoy considers himself primarily a photographer these days, he hasn’t given up acting completely. He’s appearing in the upcoming big-screen "Star Trek," which has Zachary Quinto of "Heroes" recreating his iconic role of Spock.

"He looks quite a bit like me, and it was a pleasure to work with him and the others," Nimoy says. "It’s a revisiting of the originals of ‘Star Trek’ to show how that original crew came out of the Starfleet Academy together."

Nimoy says the film has "great heart, which is the core of ‘Star Trek,’" and has already gotten the thumbs-up from an unlikely fan.

"My wife is not a big science fiction fan, and we saw a close-to-finished cut of the movie a couple of months ago," Nimoy says. "As the story began to wrap up, she leaned over and told me, ‘I don’t want this movie to end.’"

Leonard Nimoy’s "The Full Body Project" runs Feb. 7-28 at the University of Alabama Visual Arts Gallery. The artist himself will appear at a lecture this Friday at 7:30 p.m. (lecture is free; a reception at 5:30 p.m. is $100). More info at the UAB site.

Leonard Nimoy as Spock in the new Star Trek movie

Saldana on Nimoy, Nichelle Nichols and more:
BlackFilm.com has a new interview with Zoe Saldana (Uhura in Star Trek), talking about her experiences on the film, here are a couple of excerpts…

BlackFilm: How was you meeting with Nichelle Nichols?
Saldana: I was able to sit down with her and she told me the whole story of how Uhura came to be and where they were going with her character, but it all fell into place the moment she walked into the door and auditioned for the part. She named the character herself and it was a special thing and she felt as an artist, she was going to make the part big.

BlackFilm: In working with Leonard Nimoy, did you pick up anything from him from the old series?
Saldana:
Well, you can only talk to Leonard for a little while. He’s so awesome. There’s not a lot I can say when I’m standing next to him. He’s a legend.

Pine named star of tomorrow + Carriers trailer leak + interview ‘from the vault’
The new Star Trek movie is helping propel the new Kirk, Chris Pine, into the major leagues. Today it was announced that Pine will be honored with the Male Star of Tomorrow award at ShoWest 2009, the annual motion picture industry convention, being held this year in Las Vegas on March 30th. In a statement, ShoWest co-managing director Mitch Neuhauser said:

ShoWest has a history of recognizing major talents at the very earliest points in their rising careers. Pine’s impressive skills on the screen and stage will be sure to be showcased, with his performance as Captain Kirk, in the much anticipated release of Star Trek in theatres May 8, 2009. We could not be more excited to honor Chris Pine as this year’s Male Star of Tomorrow.

Chris Pine as James T. Kirk in the new Star Trek movie

Star Trek is not the only film Chris Pine has finished that is in the can. Paramount Vantage is sitting on a film called Carriers, starring Pine, which is about a global pandemic. Carriers was shot before Star Trek, yet still does not have a release date, but a trailer for it leaked onto the net in the last week.

Our last Pine update comes from our friends over at UGO. Since new interviews with Pine are so elusive, they posted this 2007 interview with Pine for the film Smokin Aces, for those who just want to see what he is like.

For even more on Pine, check out UGO’s ‘Chris Pine Film Festival‘ to see what he was up to before becoming a ‘star of tomorrow.’

Holla! Thanks, Anthony. I needed my TrekMovie fix for the day. :-)

Good stuff gentelmen, good stuff…

sweet!

wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooot!

Carriers looks terrific.

The PR for Pine is brilliant. How a man can be honored for a performance in a yet-to-be-released film is beyond me, but JJ and the PR team deserve major kudos.

Ya gotta love how Nimoy sums up people’s reactions to this new movie. It seems so… normal the way he described Mrs. Nimoy’s endorsement.

I like Mrs. Nimoy’s reaction to the movie! :)

I am not a hater of this new movie.
I am not a hater of the new Enterprise.
I am not being critical of Trekmovie when I submit Showest Male Star of Tomorrow doesn’t really mean a whole lot.

8. Math ain’t that hard

That’s true. But it does mean that somebody in the industry sees a bright future for Pine.

I suspect Pine will be good in this film. I love Saldana’s comments about being in Nimoy’s presence. She seems very sweet. Can’t wait to see the actors at cons!

The Carriers trailer gave me chills. Cannot wait to see Pine in it.

I wonder if Nichelle Nichols was able to tell the tale, to amuse her Captain, no? …Able to tell Saldana the tale of how a young Uhura served up the Budweisers in an Iowa bar? TO amuse her captain, no?

Never told her how a young ADMIRAL James T Kirk… ADMIRAL!!! tried to show a macintosh computer to her? TO amuse her captain, no?

THA WEOMANS!!

=h=

Hmm Carriers looks fantastic, I wonder why there hasn’t been any publicity for it. Maybe they just felt there were too many Zombie/Ghost Town type movies (I am Legend, Diary of the Dead etc).

Huh?

hey, its me, denise and liz once again. just like old times as they say. but yo “two draft” orcster. are you out there, my good man? i have another question for you. its about that very thing which i speak. so does you think that in a third draft of your script, maybe you would have re-thought the whole uhura serving budweisers in iowa thingie? or man, are you sticking by the old tried and true, cake and eat it too version of quantum theory – as we know generally the most accepted – “everything that appears as non-canon will have a canon explanation”?

because me thinks your homeboy lynrd skynimoy is contraindicating you when he says: “It’s a revisiting of the originals of ‘Star Trek’ to show how that original crew came out of the Starfleet Academy together.”

that suggests a back to the future kind of plot, brother p-touch. you know what i am OK with that. I support you, man. but i think that you need to come clean finally about this. theres no “prime” this and “prime” that, bro… come on. your buddy sir JJ is saying the same thing about it being an origins story. and of course they can say that to the cattle that are unaware of the inconsistencies because only die hards like us take you to task on them.

so dude, just come clean, ok? i personally dont eggzpect you to rehash all the silly plotlines and backstories in a tv series that aired 40 years ago. you want to tell you OWN stories, man. I get that. the treksters here are big boys too – they will come around once you let the cat out of the ziplock. see what i am saying?

so orcster – 1. origins story OR 2. alternate universe OR 3. yella?

THE WOMEN!!

=h=

im happy that Zoe Saldana is finally going to be in a movie that people actually to to see!

Nimoy was classy as always!

Chris Pine the Star of Tommorow? a little premature but I’m not gonna bash the guy.

all on all, great interviews/news!

WoooooHooooo!

Endorsement by someone who contributed, along with Mr. Nimoy, so mightily to the expansion of the world-renowned Griffith Observatory is quite an honor. Even in addition to that, Mrs. Nimoy has quite a fine resume’ of beneficence and accomplishments that make her praise impressive indeed.

Wooooo! Hooooo!!!. I like this Ship! Tis exciting!!!!!. Ok pine looks to be the next Cruise but with out all that Religion Stuff and Zoe looks hot as ever. Mr Nimoy is Simply the Greatest and Having him in the Movie is just incredable. In fact Hearing that Nimoys Wife who is not realy a Trek fan Saying she did now want it to end was even Better. The Supper bowl Commerical was just perfect as i have Talked to a lot of people Who did not know about trek and about Sylar being Spock in the New Movie. So much going on and again kudos to trek movie for getting us all the info.

“Leonard Nimoy (who reprises his role as Spock in the new Star Trek)”

Woah woah WOAH, maybe try putting a spoiler warning before that???

You may want to fix your type-o:

BlackFilm: How was you meeting with Nichelle Nichols?

Ahh. Humor. Fascinating.

I would totally love it if some recording “accidentally” leaked onto the Internet of Zach Quinto or Chris Pine blowing up on a crew member just like Christian Bale did while on the set of Terminator 4!

“Give me a f**king answer!”

“I see you walking in the background da da da!”

“it is f**cking distracting!”

“what don’t you understand??!!”

Please let this happen!

YES.

WHOOT-WHOOT!

More ST09 action!!!! 8D

And now I wanna see Carriers. Whenever the heck it comes out. xD

16.Isnt Zoe Saldana also in Avatar ?
I am sure a lot of people will see that too.
granted Trek is first ,
But it appers Zoes carreer was already on the rise BEFORE she was cast in Star Trek.

#23

Not gonna happen. JJ personally frisked every cast and crew member as they walked in the door and put all there belongings in a black box with a big question mark on it and told them they will get there life back when shooting is done. When he says “cut”, he means cut.

=A=

You know, it’s a bit disconcerting to see the shrinkage of shelf space devoted to Trek novels, etc., over at the local bookstore. I, for one, hope that this new movie re”kindle”s (pun, pun) interest in Trek literature as well, such that we will be privileged, once again, to read about the adventures of our various starship crew (TOS through STXI) in book form.

I was leafing through 2006’s Ships of the Line and marveling, for the millionth time, at how vast, wondrous and detailed the Trekverse really is, from start to finish. If someone were to create a virtual, holodeck Trekverse, a la Wrigley’s Pleasure Planet, it would be the abode of choice for many a vacationer to lose himself in an ocean of planetary delight.

If Star Trek XI is a hit, then I look forward to further updates to the Trek Encyclopedia, futher Ships of the Line, and technical manuals galore.

Please … make it so!

23 – Another perspective on the Christian Bale situation:

http://www.aintitcool.com/node/39984

27 – You know, a technical manual of the new Enterprise and/or the Kelvin would be a very interesting read.

Wow. Carriers looks really bad.

Why is Nimoy’s Spock being referred as “Prime” when he’s the one and only original Spock?

If anything, Quinto’s should be the one to get special mention such as :

“Spock re-boot”
“Spock 2009”
“MTV-Spock”
“Heroes-Spock”
“Post Prime Spock”
“Spock 1.1”
“Spock v2”
“Spock-a-licious”
“Baby spock”
“The other Spock”
“Boomer Spock”
“Faker Spock”
“Wannabe Spock”
“Next Gen Spock”
“Anti-Trekker Spock”
“Spock for the rest of us”
“Post Bush Spock”

or simply,

“Spock 2”

etc.

I love Nimoy- a class act and what a great endorsement by way of his wife. Very cool.

Sorry for the repeat-comment– for some reason no comments appeared (as if they were lost in a temporal rift!). Again, I apologize for the redundancy. I will add to it that I am very surprised by the number of regular folks I know that have no idea a new Star Trek is coming out in a couple of months. I think people are not paying attention until April/May.

Zoe Saldana was in “Pirates of the Caribbean: Curse of the Black Pearl”

Speaking of Saldana and the Uhura character, I wonder if this movie will finally”canonically” establish her first name as Nyota…

Leonard Nimoy is by far the biggest reason I want to see this film.

I wonder why they haven’t released his movie yet?

31, we already have “Prime” for the undisturbed timeline, and “Punk” for the disturbed timeline. With every wave, the transient parts of the waveform will always eventually give in to the steady-state part. Punk eventually resets itself to be as close to Prime as possible. That’s quantodynamics for you… without Ashton Kutcher turning up.

Nimoy says. “It’s a revisiting of the originals of ‘Star Trek’ to show how that original crew came out of the Starfleet Academy together.”

No one told him it was an alternate timeline, huh?

I live in Alabama. And I admire Mr. Nimoy. I respect his talents a photographer, including his ‘Full Body Project’. But if he’s displaying a photo of my sister-in-law in Birmingham, that is is a picture I do NOT need presented before me.

*YEESH* LMAO

27 & 29
The leap in my heart when I read “Technical Manual” has made me realize that I have indeed accepted the new Enterprise as the real thing. Please please please please let there be a detailed technical manual. (with set blueprints & a scale, like the Technical Journal or Mr. Scott’s Guide to the Ent.). Does anybody know what the new warp core looks like, if there is one? I’m hoping for TNG-esque.

31
It’s like trying to find a new name for “PowerBook” when Steve announced the “MacBook” Anything would be better, but nothing really works. For what it’s worth, I like most of your suggestions, and they all got a laugh except “faker” and “anti-trek” Other possible Spock variations include Spock Lite, Tw*nk Spock, Spocklar, lolSpock, Millennium Spock, Mirror Spock?, and of course, Spaaaahck (read ala Shatner).

38
In physics, typically, the alternate is the “prime.” The original is simply referred to as whatever it’s name is.
Spock = Leonard Nimoy
Spock’ (pronounced “Spock Prime”) = Zach Quinto
This explains all the confusion I’ve had when reading the spoilers.

40
Is it at UofA@T-town or UAB? I grew up in B’ham, might have my parents run over and try to get him to sign a napkin… I feel real sorry for all those who go to see Spock and instead see his grotesque photos

“that original crew came out of the Starfleet Academy together”
that makes less sense than main characters avoiding death just because it’s in their contracts. Since when do ensigns & ship captains come out of the Academy together? It’s silly. Maybe they’ll explain it. But then of course, there’s the whole Bussard collectors being a negative sum game above Warp 1 thing again, so never mind.

“12. hitch1969©, producer of “If I Did It, Jr”- a musical for children, starring children”

Put down the glass pipe & back away my friend. You’ve had more than enough.

41 As a physicist myself, I think that you’re confusing relativistic notation with…. ummmmmm. Spock Prime is what the writers used to distinguish the original Spock: following *comic book notation*, not *physics*. Re: Earth-Prime.

I’m all for physics, but what does that make the Prime Minister then?

And prime numbers… if they have two factors, one and itself (thus ruling out 1, which has only one), why isn’t -1 prime?

And if Riker is Number One, what number does that make Picard?

Why didn’t anyone ever write a story Star Trek: Phase One?

I think I need a Michael Phelps of what Hitch is dealing….

39 – “Nimoy says. ‘It’s a revisiting of the originals of ‘Star Trek’ to show how that original crew came out of the Starfleet Academy together.’

“No one told him it was an alternate timeline, huh?”

No, they didn’t have time. ; )

And wasn’t that quote from Nimoy’s wife about the movie in an article here about two months ago? No news there.

37 – “I wonder why they haven’t released his movie yet?”

They want more time to keep feeding this cash cow before they milk it for all it’s worth.

It’s UAB or University of Alabama at Birmingham Visual Arts Gallery, not University of Alabama- Tuscaloosa,.

Just a clarification from a UAB alumnus. We’re not big fans of the Tuscaloosa campus and it can be a bit confusing as to which of the three campuses you’re talking about (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, or Huntsville).

Thanks for the post. It’s funny that I live in Birmingham but didn’t even know about this event until this post, haha. Thanks!

#45: why soooo serious?

47, Doug, my brother, stay safe man and thanks for all you do.

Not sure what to think of Carriers. The trailer gives me the impression of a run-of-the-mill gorefest like Friday the 13th or saw… but I can’t judge it when it doesn’t even have a release date yet.

47 – Didn’t think I was being “sooo serious.” Merely believe I am telling the truth. Even Paramount admitted to postponing the original Christmas ’08 release date to May of ’09 in hopes to grab more greenbacks.

It’s hard to judge people’s tones from printed words, but please don’t assign a grimness to me that I never intended when you don’t even know me, and especially when in another thread I had wished you a safe return and thanked you for your service overseas.
