Attending the event are a number of Star Trek licensees who have booths as well as some Star Trek related panels. Also in attendance will be Marina Sirtis and a few other Trek celebs. See below for a list of what Trek fans can add to their list of things to do at NYCC.

What no movie preview?

First! Good stuff

I’ll be there in 2 1/2 hours :)

I went to a con once that was supposed to have Sirtis and she didn’t show up. We were told it was because the folks who ran the convention booked standard seating on the plane rather than 1st class so she wouldn’t come. The con tickets were pretty expensive so I was really pissed off. I don’t have any way to know if that was the truth or not but it left a bad impression.

I’ve seen Michael Dorn, Gates McFadden, LeVar Burton, Rene Aberjonious and, greatest of them all, William Shatner… all real pros.

About 12 years ago I went to a Star Wars con in San Francisco that was supposed to have Mark Hamill. He didn’t show up either. Never really cared for him after that. The guy who played C3PO came but the sound was terrible. The room had a horrible echo so it was more annoying than informative.

I’d like to know which convention companies for Star Trek are good and which don’t deliver on their promises. Any thoughts? I’d love to go to one since the new movie is coming soon but don’t want to waste my time or money. I now live on the east coast and could get to one in NYC or Washington, DC by train.

Playmates’ absence is conspicuous. What’s up with that?

Wow… you’d never guess there was a new Trek movie coming out soon, based on anything at this con…

Let’s hear it for the new Star Trek movie!

*crickets*

This is a comic-con, not a Trek Con.

Back in the day, I used to attend both. Comic-cons were always more of a bazaar than a showcase for genre luminaries (though Peter David ain’t too shabby). You’d find comics, books, baseball cards, toys and crafts, and almost no costumes except paid actors as superheroes. Maybe it’s different now.

$60 a pop is pretty steep.

does Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) ever go to Cons??

I never hear anything about her anymore.

did she retire from acting?

8:

I seem to recall she had a baby recently. She’s been on some cop/lawyer show of late as well.

Ungh. I WIIIIIISH I lived nearer to NYC. D: It stinks bein’ in Nebraska, with no conventions whatsoever!

(However, our football team is awesomeness. And a TOS episode was set in my hometown. WHAT NOW, FOO’.)

10, which TOS episode was based in Nebraska?

Gotta beTomorrow is Yesterday.

This has nothing to do with anything mentioned here I know….but I was there back in 2000 or 01 and saw Frank Gorshin, Adam West, Yvonne Craig,…and Rutger Hauer. Saw Gorshin the next year at a Broadway show he did. He referred to it as the autograph signing party. If you don’t know any of those names then you’re not old enough. I refuse to say I’m too old.

The last few years they haven’t had anyone worthwhile, IMO.

Right on, bro. They’re all too young, How hot was Yvonne Craig? In THE sixties, I mean. Not HER sixties.

Can someone please tell the Gene L Coon guy his title gets longer and longer every time he says something?

Folks,

The reason Paramount has done NOTHING to promote the new Trek film at major fan events is because they believe the film is already “pre-sold” to its audience.

We’ll see.

16. Enterprise – February 6, 2009

You noticed! Fooling around a little.

17/RMBurnett:

I’d have to agree. Unless the con has a pronounced media presence (Last year, San Diego, for example), what’s the point?

I only found out about the comic-con from my ex-wife who’s doing a travel expo upstairs as the Javits Center at the same time, and asked if I could grab the kids for six hours tomorrow.

There has been no info here except this thread, and we’re 19 strong. I think Trekkers are more attuned to Nimoy’s art show in Birmingham (Alabama) this weekend than to this con.

Believe me

I can’t say that I agree with RM Burnett. SDCC was just bad timing for Para, and they didn’t do any panels, not just ST. NYCC is not really a big deal for studios.

Star Trekkin’?

Ugh.

Right on, bro. They’re all too young, How hot was Yvonne Craig? In THE sixties, I mean. Not HER sixties.

You know she is still very nice looking for any age. I loved her. Loved her then and now. The thing about her was she was so cool to talk to. Everyone of those people has a handler with them to keep us dangerous fans from getting too close or talking too much. Her handler was her sister. And they were both super cool. We talked for a good while. Had lots of stories. Yvonne lived in the area of Dallas where Dennis Rodman is from when she was a girl. I informed her the neighborhood’s changed since she was there. She had heard rumors to that affect.

Gorshin was super cool too. He was pleased and a little surprised that people were interested in him. I didn’t talk one bit about Batman. Just about other things in life. He seemed to really enjoy that. He also waved off his handler for us. “No, no, no….let these boys stay”. Greatness.

“The reason Paramount has done NOTHING to promote the new Trek film at major fan events is because they believe the film is already “pre-sold” to its audience.”

…That, and Abrams just got finished with his little round-the-world tour, which either he a) feels was enough to hype the film, or b) feels too lazy to hype to, as it’s been put, the “pre-sold audience”. The “pre-sold” one is the group whose ass they *need* to kiss and hold panels for, because they’re the ones who’ve kept Paranoidmount in the black all these decades now.

Not that they’ll ever admit this…

22 Andy

Great stories! Thanks. Nice to hear that they were friendly.

I was in and around the Javits Center today, and the Con was absolutely packed. There was an authentic stormtrooper at the entrance, and he couldn’t get away from the NY Times travel show attendees in the next room.

24

Yeah. Thanks. I won’t monopolize Anthony’s boards but I do have a great story about meeting Gorshin, four months after that NYCon, – seeing him in a one man show on Broadway he did playing George Burns called “Say Goodnight Gracie” via email if you’re interested. I’ve got pics and everything. Now there’s a story.

26 Now how can I say I wouldn’t want to read that?

#17: RM Burnett…I think that may be part of it, but frankly I think that most media types only allocate annual “geek marketing” budget to SDCC, and it’s also a lot easier to get to from L.A. NYCC is still a surprise to some in terms of size and most of the toy companies appear because they’re used to working with the location for Toy Fair (which is next week, and most of the companies are just leaving their stuff in storage here this week).

And yes, #5, Playmates was there. Dunno why they weren’t mentioned.
