TrekInk: Review of Missions End #2 + Previews of Klingons Spotlight & ST:II Adaptation

The IDW Star Trek comics are coming faster these days. Today the second issue of the "Mission’s End" series comes out and it is full of politics and intrigue, set at the end of the TOS five year mission. Below we have a review of "Missions End" #2. Plus we have previews of the "Alien Spotlight" Klingons issue coming out next week, and the Star Trek II adaptation coming this summer.

MISSION’S END #2 REVIEW

Like Crew #2 last week, the second issue of "Mission’s End" follows closely on the heels of the first as IDW gets their shipping schedules back on the rails after the fast-tracking of "Countdown". We left off in the first issue at the very beginning of The Original Series. This time we pick up at the tail end of the five-year mission.

It’s been four and a half years since the Enterprise first visited Archernar IV, and the spider-like creatures of that world are now petitioning for acceptance into the ranks of the Federation. After their presentation to the council, the envoy finds himself partaking in some intrigue with a couple of Humans, who, by their words, appear to belong to Section 31 (or its predecessor), a group last seen in DC Fontana’s "Year Four: Enterprise Experiment" series. We then jump forward about six months as the Enterprise has picked up now-Ambassador Cassady and is visiting the Arachernar IV for the Federation treaty ceremony.

Of course, this being Star Trek and a comic story, things inevitably go wrong. In this case, it’s a revolution. This quickly leads to some impressive destruction and some hand-to-hand combat, like only Kirk can do! The first issue was something of an introduction, but this one shows that Ty Templeton really gets the Original Series. He really does. The pace of the story is snappy, the exposition is dealt with quickly and in the context of other events, and he has Kirk and Spock’s voices down. The nice thing is that he has integrated some of the "modern" Trek into the story with Section 13, and at the same time, has tied it into IDW’s earlier "Year Four" comics.

Templeton can deem himself lucky on this series, as he has been united with an artist that can draw the Original Series in Stephen Molnar. Over the course of the first half of the book, we see the Federation Council, Sarek, the Enterprise, the shuttlecrat Columbus, and backing characters like Scotty, Sulu, and M’Ress. Molnar’s given the whole gambit of Trek events and characters to work with and, for the most part, he excels. A couple of characters look a bit flat, but his characterizations of McCoy, Spock, and especially Kirk look fantastic. It’s still obviously a comic book, but the drawings are far more than simple cartoons.

The power being used to destroy space stations obviously takes a toll on ones vocal chords… (click to enlarge)

Just as with the last issue, Joe Corroney provides the cover. Unlike the first issue, it appears that there is only the one cover this time around, but Corroney gives a strong impression of the story on the cover – Hand-to-hand combat, spiders, phasers, and a shuttlecraft to boot. As usual, his covers have something of a photo-realistic feel, and don’t feel too cartoonish.

The first issue started a bit slow, but this issue has thrown the entire mess into a blender and set it on high speed. Leaving us with a cliffhanger at the end of the issue, Templeton is setting us up for a good and swift roller-coaster ride through the next few issues. It’s an interesting story thus far, and through two issues, it’s also taken a couple of unexpected turns, which should make the next three issues quite interesting, especially with their promise of showing why Spock and McCoy leave Starfleet in advance of the first movie.

Look for the TrekMovie review of "Alien Spotlight: Klingons" next Wednesday.

Star Trek II Wrath of Khan adaptation (June ’09 – better late than never)
Back in 1982, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan never got a comic book. All of other TOS era movies got comics, so it is ironic that the one considered the best did not. In June IDW are going to rectify that with a three issue series adapting the film. "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan" comic series is being written by Andy Schmidt  with art by Chee Yang Ong and the three issues will be ‘bi-weekly’ starting in June.

Here are covers for the first two issues:

I’ve always thought TWOK should get a “retro” adaptation. Smart!

Actually, the TWOK comic looks pretty cool. Can’t wait to see it.

Cool on a ST2 adaptation. I love IDW’s take on Star Trek better than almost every other comic companies attempts to date.

Keep ’em coming.

The artwork on the Alien Spotlight is especially good.

Must get my hands on those TWOK comics…

Excuse my confusion, but isn’t it section 31?

Covers look great. Love the covers for The Wrath of Khan. It’s about time.

I hope the art is outta this world! The covers look great. I’ll take cover “B” if you don’t mind! The other Trek feature that didn’t get a comic is Nemesis. Does it deserve one? Will there be a comic for the new movie?

wow, pretty cool ! Can’t wait to read it !

It tasks me… it tasks me, and I shall have it!

Re: 6

Blame it on a spurt of dyslexia. My mind was thinking “31”, my fingers “13” apparently. You are correct.

Re: 8

I’m pretty sure that Insurrection also missed out on the comic front. Maybe we’ll see those two movies done together someday.

Its gonna be SO COOL slotting the 3 Khan issues inbetween my Marvel TMP comic special and DCs TSFS!! (wont bother with the TPB as it contains all TOS movie adaptations)…Only been waiting 27 years…as a comic collector (specifically a comic adaptation collector) this is a BIG deal…sorta like the holy grail of comic adaptations – the guess the others would be Superman The Movie and S II – dunno why DC don’t do them…big Mario Puzo rights problem I suppose

Wonder if there might be some extra stuff in TWOK comic like in the novel (so not just a basic adaptation of the film) – stuff like khan taking reliant, genesis torture scenes, maybe even a brief prologue showing some of khans time on Ceti Alpha V – like an ultra condensed version of Greg Coxs ‘excellent’ To Reign in Hell novel (that would make for a great comic adaptation btw – like they did with Ashes of Eden….in fact id be up for some adaptations of some of the better novels like Reign, Federation, Prime Directive, Lost Years etc)

In fact (forgive me OT sorta) it’s a shame they didn’t do something like Reign in Hell for Star Trek V – a Khan prequel showing his time on Ceti Alpha V from Space Seed to finding Chekov/Terrel (with the post TVH prologue and end of Kirk, Spock and Bones visiting the planet instead of camping at Yosemite)…it would have only been 7 years after TWOK and Richardo could’ve pulled it off – I know hed have been playing a younger Khan in the 15 year period but they could’ve had him in dark wig etc – suspension of disbelief and all that (hell they had Hopkins play Lector in Red Dragon)…maybe even had a flashback to the Eugenic Wars (with a younger actor as Khan)…. maybe Nicolas Meyer wouldve wanted to direct it…..Ok so Kirk, Spock Bones etc would really only have extended cameos but Khan was in the 80s (and pretty much still is) second only to Vader in terms of popular Sci Fi villians…I dont think fans and moviegoers wouldve had a problem with going to see a trek film mainly about Khan..

Then again it was shatners turn to direct..and he had his heart set on the God story

Star Trek comic books are getting better and better with IDW. But Mission’s End isn’t one of them. Story is ok, but the art is pretty weak IMHO. After getting used to Messina’s work, or even Byrne’s, Molnar simply isn’t on the same level. Just check the sample art for Klingons, now that is good art. I am glad that Molnar isn’t the one doing the art for ST II.

I love all of them except for the lens flares. It really bugs me and I’m starting to get real down on these comics because of them.

Holy Krike! IS that Moe as Spock on the STII:The wrath of Kahn cover?

15 – What is Wrath of Kahn?

Khan will tear those limb from limb who misspell his name!

Anyone else notice that the nacelle pylons of the Enterprise are strangely curved on that cover for Issue #2?

I love the Enterprise firing on Regula station. I must’ve missed that in the uber director’s cut DVD…

These look great. Look foward to reading them. Not really interesting in the Khan books, I know that story already. But I’m all over the new stuff.

The art for the Klingons spotlight looks great. Mission’s End has been okay so far. I’m not a big fan of the art, however.

I reead the second issue of Final Mission and noticed that the artist decided to give McCoy brown eyes! De’s features with Urbans eyes??

TWOK art is soooooo COOOOOOL

How many comics have there been dealing with the end of the 5YM? I figure atleast 3 – there was the DC Annual in the early 1980s, followed by a multi-story arc that ended the second DC series, and now this one from IDW…

Did I miss any others?
