Star Trek: The Exhibition Launches New Site + Science Museums Still Showing ST09 in IMAX

Starting in 2008 there have been two ‘engagements’ of Star Trek: The Exhibition, a touring museum exhibit of Star Trek set pieces, costumes and props and more. Now ST: TE has a new central website with info and where you can get notified when it comes to your town. And in other Star Trek museum news, a number of science museums are still running Star Trek in IMAX.

Star Trek: The Exhibition: The Website
The new website is at startrekexhibition.com. The site features information and a slideshow from the exhibits, a blog and ticketing information. One of the more interesting sections is for educators, which includes two guides for class field trips and activities (Grades 4-7 and 8-12).

One of the most common questions about ST: The Exhibit is ‘when will it come to my home town?’. Well the site currently only lists the two current engagements (with both end in September). However, there is a Notify Me form that signs you up to be alerted with the Exhibit comes to your home town. You can also suggest a museum for the to bring the Exhibit to using the Notify My Museum page.

Science Museums still showing Star Trek In IMAX
Although the new Star Trek movie had a limited run on IMAX which ended when Night at the Museum 2 opened, ironically, some of the IMAX theaters attached to museums are still playing Star Trek, including both the museums with Star Trek The Exhibition.

Here is a list of which ones we know about so far:

In addition to these museums, some IMAX theaters are still doing weekend midnight shows of Star Trek. Check imax.com for a list of theaters (although many theaters on that list are no longer running Trek).

I saw it in Imax. It blinded me.

I loved it in Imax. I just wished they had it in Austin Still. Oh. Last!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wonder if anyone now thinks it was a mistake to kick Trek out of IMAX for Night at the Museum 2? Especially since Trek’s numbers were MUCH more impressive (like Trek making more in one weekend than NatM2 did in two?). Maybe next time around, Trek will get a longer run in IMAX =)

What blinded you exactly? lens flare? :P

Anyway this is cool. Field trips for schools, yeah! Get ’em to learn about Trek.

Trek is actually on it’s way back to IMAX this weekend… Running until Transformers moves in.

I went to this Exhibition in Philadelphia.
This was one of the worst Star Trek experience that I have ever had.

The Exhibition was only 3 Rooms. The Exhibition was not complete and omitted things that other cities had.

You are not permitted to take pictures of any kind. There was a photographer walking through the 3 rooms and he was charging $27.00 plus tax to get a picture on the TNG Bridge.

I was deeply saddened that Exhibition in Philadelphia was bad.

The only good thing about this exhibit was Next Generation Bridge.

I saw it in IMAX. The camera moved so fast I almost got dizzy.

It’s coming to the IMAX at the Indiana State Museum starting this weekend.

Saw it in Imax twice- breathtaking. Very immersive experience, in particular when the Enterprise warps into the debris field. Good stuff.

We have 3 Imax theatres and an Omnimax here in Vancouver. And none of them showed Star Trek. :(

I felt it was unwatchable in IMAX. There is too much visual clutter, reflections, flares, whatever. And as the picture gets bigger and there’s so much more of an expanse to keep track of – each movement makes you have to turn your head — nah. It just becomes a nuisance.

I preferred my viewing on the small screen at the second-last row of the theater. Honest to god. Frustrating.

Kennedy Space Center is not in Orlando, Florida.

#6 – I am in D.C. and was going to travel up to Philly for the exhibit. Is it really that bad?

11. Thorny

My friend, I’ve been there. While its not exactly in Orlando, its close enough. Only 45 minutes out.

When did the exhibit come to Philly? I had no idea. I live an hour away from that museum. I’m upset that someone said it sucks, cuz I’m not paying beaucoup bucks for something that sucks. Also, I only want to see the TOS bridge. I already saw the TNG bridge in Vegas and have no desire to see it again.

You are so right! I was terribly disappointed. I made it through the entire exhibit in a half hour. The bridge only made me cry for what we lost in Vegas. It was a poor substitute, full of inacuracies.
The so-called imax of the movie was even worse. A standard imax projected onto concave screen. The E was all bent out of shape. It was terrible.

kosher-what were the differences with the tng bridge from the experience? I loved the experience bridge and saw it many times in vegas up to its closing-I also saw the deflector dish from the ent d model at the entrance for sale on ebay with a sad comment that the ship did not survive the experience-but i havent heard anything else or details-
If anyone knows anything? also sounds like these exhibits are not even as good as the vegas attraction which i loved was so if so why go?

You guys have to remember, this is more of an educational thing, not pure entertainment, so it’s naturally going to sacrifice a lot of the “cool” stuff.

i loved it in IMAX. How could you possibly complain about that? It’s perfect!

The original The Tour Exhibition in Long Beach was very large and the bridges of both generations were there to have your picture taken interacting with the crew of the ships on or you could opt for a photo in front of the Guardian of Forever. There were no camera restrictions that I can remember. There was also an opportunity to be filmed interacting with Kirk and Spock in 3 different stories based on footage from the TOS series. There were also 2 motion simulator rides based on TNG. It was a very enjoyable experience and it took most of the afternoon to see it all.

I am near Philly and wanted to see the exhibit. Is it really only three rooms?

I have purchased a family pass for the Detroit Science Center and hope to go toward the end of the month. Any one been to The Exhibition there? I did get to take the family to the Star Trek: Federation Science that made the rounds a few years back with lots of props and interactive displays and so forth–again it was more of a educational venue but quite entertaining for my young children at the time (and Dad rather enjoyed it too!).

I am curious about the IMAX screenings as well–how much does it cost to present a movie in IMAX (assuming this is simply a conversion of a standard movie rather than using the actual IMAX cameras as in some of the special features exclusive to IMAX) and how much money does a movie producer need to make with such limited IMAX runs?

FYI–here is what the Detroit Science Center says on its Web site about the Exhibition:

Highlights of STAR TREK THE EXHIBITION include:
• A detailed recreation of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as featured in the original Star Trek television series. Visitors can stand on the Enterprise bridge and have their photo taken.
• Re-creations of original sets from Star Trek: The Next Generation, including Captain Picard’s quarters and command chair.
• A chance to ride through a Star Trek adventure in a full-motion flight simulator.
• A full-scale recreation of the Transporter Room from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Here is what was left out at the Philadelphia Star Trek Exhibition.

1. A detailed recreation of the bridge from the USS Enterprise NCC-1701 as featured in the original Star Trek television series. Visitors can stand on the Enterprise bridge and have their photo taken.

2. A full-scale recreation of the Transporter Room from Star Trek: The Next Generation.

3. Captain Picard’s quarters

MELBOURNE AUSTRALIS still has it showing in IMAX!

# 10 Cagmar u kind of missed the point of cinema didn’t u?

having to turn mu head to see all the way to the end of the nacelles was the closest i will come to seeing the Enterprise in space.

Providence Place in RI is still showing it in IMAX

I feel your pain. I missed seeing it in Austin by two days. That was one of the goals of a Memorial Day weekend visit with friends, and I was denied!

Now I’m concerned that I’m hearing the Philly exhibition is not too good since I bought tickets and I am taking a trip up there specifically for this.

Has anyone been to the Detroit exhibition to give a comparison?

HOLY CRAP!!!
HUNTSVILLE!!!
The Space and Rocket center is less than 10 miles from my house… I’ll be LIVING on that bridge…

The Detroit exhibit was quite nice (and has different items than Philly) I thought. The 1701 bridge is great escept for Spock’s station. Keep in mind most of these items are recreations (aside from “newer” items). The uniforms are all authentic, but the TOS uniforms had been modified in preparation for Phase II, so the pants are altered to new cuffs, and the shirts are altered for new (motion Picture) braid. But we loved it… wore our vintage tos uniforms and didn’t want to leave.

I’ve been to the Philadelphia Exhibition and I wish it has been as cool as the pics. That said, it IS being held at the best museum ever made: The Franklin Institute!

Franklin Institute Rocks!, hopefully its not as bad as you all have been saying cause i’ll be there in the next week or so

1st Showing – Non-IMAX Large Theater (biggest in MN)
2nd Showing – Saw it with VIP tickets opening night at the IMAX the MN Zoo.
3rd Showing – Saw it the following weekend at the IMAX as well.
4th Showing – Small town theater in IOWA with my farmer father-in-law.

The immersion capabilities of IMAX were astounding, and I’d pay double to see it there again.

You should have seen the country crowd at the small (and I mean SMALL screen – 24 feet wide) when “IOWA” came up on the screen twice! – I think they would have helped Kirk in the bar fight if it had lasted a few seconds longer!

I saw it the first day in IMAX and then the next week in a regular theater.
The IMAX Version was the best ….. I wish I went to the IMAX for the second viewing instead of the regular movie ……

I saw it in IMAX May 8th.. Raleigh NC, 7:30PM Damn it was good!

I loved it on the IMAX screen, although that said, the theatres here came in a close second!

Cagmar, you might want to get that peripheral vision of yours checked out (grin).

I went to IMAX preview on May 6 and Seattle Cinerama on May 7. I preferred Cinerama.

#29 or anyone else

Could you take your own photos in Detroit, was there any other restrictions?

34. Vibe

I saw it in the same IMAX theater on May 16th 4:30pm, after having seen it in a regular theater opening night. It was amazing! I enjoyed it much more in IMAX than I did on a regular sized screen.

I went to the Detroit Science Center exhibition today with my inlaws and wife, and we are all longtime fans of the show. I was very disappointed – the ship models are cracked and effects are peeling off, most of the prop recreations are painted wood, and “professional” pictures – the only kind allowed – ran $20 apiece.

Neat for younger fans to get up close to some real-looking items, but a disappointment for older fans hoping to catch a glimpse at some real stuff from the show.

I had already posted a tons of negative foul reviews on the Deeetroit exhibit on here and other sites including that BS one “wired” which deleted it due to the harsh criticism and negativity of my post. Just search here for it under star trek exhibit.

Basically you people need to know the reason the transorter isn’t in PA is because it’s in the MI exhibit. THEY SPLIT IT UP PEOPLE!!! Apparently the public is fed up with waiting half a year for the whole thing to move into their town so they halved it. And no you can’t take pics, and apparently also they are failing to display ALL of the stuff they received at the detroit one because there wasn’t enough room. Which I am going to complain about and ask for a refund. If they can’t show every goddamn thing, then don’t show it at all.

Oh, and for those that don’t know, the “experience” is coming back to VEGAS in some strip mall. And should be even better than it was before. Hopefully it will be SCREEN ACCURATE, unlike this bullsht they’re passing off on the public at these exhibits. Most of it is re-created props, and poorly recreated at that. Picards flute on his desk? Didn’t that sell for a ridiculous $25,000 at christies? Why yes, it did. FAKE…

Star Trek is showing at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto, nightly at 7:30 pm. Are there any bloggers out there that would like to be my guests? (Can’t provide travel and lodging, sorry). If you’ve got a decent blog (film or ST related) give me the address and I’ll drop you a line. Seats are limited.

There are good and bad IMAX theatres. The one in DesMoines sucks. I am a huge star trek fan and it was a horrible insult to a fantastic movie. Blurry, jerky motion and very hard to watch
