GENRE MOVIE NEWS

Fourth Pirates Titled; Coming Summer 2011
During Disney’s D23 fan expo over the weekend, "Pirates of the Caribbean" star Johnny Depp was on hand in full Jack Sparrow attire to help make the announcement for the fourth film in the franchise.  "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" (see the title logo below) will be released in summer 2011.

Here are a few more announcements made during Disney’s D23 Fan Expo over the weekend (via SCI FI Wire):

  • The title of the upcoming new Muppet movie will be "The Cheapest Muppet Movie Ever Made!"
  • "John Carter of Mars" will be released in Summer 2012 and it’s the first in a planned trilogy…
  • Disney announced the creation of a new Horror Label called Disney Double Dare You led by director Guillermo del Toro…
  • Nicolas Cage has agreed to work on a third installment in the successful "National Treasure" franchise.

Gavin Hood and Lauren Schuler Donner Talk Wolverine 2
During a press event for today’s DVD/Blu-ray release of "X-Men Origins: Wolverine", director Gavin Hood and producer Lauren Schuler Donner discussed proposed sequel to the film.  Here’s an excerpt courtesy Latino Review:

Does the success of the first film give you greater liberty to take an original approach or does it put more pressure on you to maintain truth to the source material?

Lauren Schuler Donner: I think it’s our responsibility to remain true to the source material. There are other influences and other factors that make us deviate from it, the first of which being transcribing it to the screen. We certainly are fully aware of the fan base and try in every way possible to stay close to the source material. I think in ‘Wolverine’ it was a little bit different because there was a lot of different source material, a lot of different legends in Victor Creed’s relationship to Logan and Logan’s background. There were some choices we had to make. Certainly in ‘Wolverine 2,’ in the Japanese saga, we will stay very close to the source material. I think it’s just best that way.

Gavin Hood: The truth is, what freaked me out a little when I was doing my research was that I was looking for the definitive origin story of Wolverine. And, of course, any of you who know the comics know that doesn’t entirely exist because this guy’s been written about for 40 years by many different writers, different illustrators. Wolverine’s been drawn wearing a yellow spandex suit and he’s been drawn about wearing jeans and a jacket. The truth is, all of these versions are from source material. The origin story of him as a kid and the bone claws happening and the hint that Victor Creed may be his half brother. In the original draft, when we looked at it without him being a half brother, there wasn’t as much emotional connection between the hero and the villain. So we had to make the choices that were right for this movie. That doesn’t mean there aren’t other options that other writers have written. I just prefer to do a movie with him in jeans and a leather jacket rather than yellow spandex. (Laughs)

Head on over to Latino Review to read more.  In related news, Patrick Stewart (Professor Charles Xavier) told convention goers at DragonCon that he’s open to returning to "X-Men".  Stewart also mentioned that he and Ian McKellen (Magneto), whom he recently co-starred with in a production of "Waiting for Godot", agreed they would like to continue to explore the relationship between their two characters.

Spider-Man 4 Gets Simultaneous IMAX Release on May 5, 2011 + Updates on Musical
IMAX Corporation and Columbia Pictures have officially announced that "Spider-Man 4" will be released in IMAX theaters simultaneously with the worldwide release on May 5, 2011:

"The last two ‘Spider-Man’ releases have been available in IMAX theaters, and we’re very much looking forward to our return to a wider IMAX theatre network with this exciting new chapter in the continuing adventures of Spider-Man," said Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. "The addition of so many new IMAX locations will give even more fans of Spider-Man an opportunity to experience the action and adventure in a unique way."

"’Spider-Man’ continues to be one of the world’s most popular motion picture franchises, and we are very excited to include the latest chapter as part of our 2011 slate," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Our network has grown significantly and we continue to roll-out new theatres virtually every week, giving more moviegoers the opportunity to experience the movie in IMAX."

In related news, Bruce Campbell told Access Hollywood that the film will begin shooting in January 2010.  Campbell says that he hasn’t been told what character he’ll play, but did say he’ll have a major part in the feature.  And rounding out the week’s "Spider-Man" news, a spokesman for the upcoming musical "Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark" has confirmed that tickets will go on sale starting October 31st.

Green Hornet Production Starts; Nicolas Cage Out, Waltz In
After multiple delays principal photography has finally kicked off on the Seth Rogen starring/co-written film adaptation of "The Green Hornet".  There may be an issue down the line, however, as the film’s scheduled release date — December 17, 2010 — conflicts with "Tron Legacy".  Read below for more on that.  The press release also noted that Tom Wilkinson and David Harbour have been cast in the series. But the bigger casting news came courtesy the film’s lead villain role. Nicolas Cage was in negotiations to take on the part, but The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision blog reported last week that Cage dropped out of talks after he was unable to come to terms on a deal with the studio.  But the studio quickly came up with a replacement with Deadline Hollywood reporting that Christoph Waltz — who gave a terrific performance in Quentin Tarantino’s "Inglourious Basterds" — has stepped into the role: "Christoph Waltz…has now been cast as villain Chudnofsky in Sony’s The Green Hornet opposite Seth Rogen and Cameron Diaz."  Check out the first set images below.

Tron Legacy Release Date Announced: December 17, 2010
As I noted above, Disney recently announced a December 17, 2010 release date for Joseph Kosinski’s "Tron Legacy".  The studio was actually expected to announce a release for that date, or at least around that time period, for some time but it’s interesting that they decided to stick with the date given all the competition surrounding the mid-to-late December release frame.  Here are some of the high-profile releases currently slated for the time period: "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Voyage of the Dawn Treader" (December 10, 2010–Fox), "The Green Hornet" (December 17th–Sony), "The Smurfs (in 3-D)" (December 17th–Sony), "Tron Legacy" (December 17th–Disney) and "Gulliver’s Travels" (December 22nd–Fox). In other news, Michael Sheen talked with ComingSoon about his brief role in the film (playing a nightclub owner in the computer world):

"That was amazing, because there’s a lot of green screen in that. But my stuff was mainly in this amazing set that they built because I’m a nightclub host, so they built the nightclub and there were hundreds of extras and it was one of those great scenes where there’s just loads going on."

Harrison Ford Talks Indy 5
When asked about progress on the proposed fifth installment in the "Indiana Jones" franchise, Harrison Ford told the French newspaper Le Figaro (via AICN) that he would "be very happy to put the [Indy] costume on again" .  Ford also revealed that he, Steven Spielberg and George Lucas have "agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern".  The relevant excerpt from the newspaper follows below:

"The story for the new Indiana Jones is in the process of taking form. Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and myself are agreed on what the fifth adventure will concern, and George is actively at work. If the script is good, I’ll be very happy to put the costume on again."

The Road Gets Delayed Again + First Reviews
It’s been a long road — no pun intended — for the oft-delayed film adaptation of Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer prize-winning post-apocalyptic sci-fi novel "The Road" — starring Viggo Mortenson Kodi McPhee, Charlize Theron, Robert Duvall and Guy Pierce — and Dimension is yet again bumping the film’s release.  The studio has announced that the film has been pushed from October 16th to November 25th. Meanwhile the first reviews from the film are starting to come out.  Here are two excerpts from Variety (negative) and The Hollywood Reporter (positive).  As a note, it’s currently sitting at 86% at Rotten Tomatoes (6 Fresh, 1 Rotten):

The Hollywood Reporter
Director John Hillcoat has performed an admirable job of bringing Cormac McCarthy’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel to the screen as an intact and haunting tale, even at the cost of sacrificing color, big scenes and standard Hollywood imagery.

Variety
Except for the physical aspects of this bleak odyssey by a father and son through a post-apocalyptic landscape, this long-delayed production falls dispiritingly short on every front.

Fox Rebooting Fantastic Four
Shortly after the news broke about Disney’s $4 billion deal to acquire the rights to Marvel properties, 20th Century Fox announced that they had hired Akiva Goldsman to produce a "Fantastic Four" reboot"Green Lantern" co-writer and "Kings" producer Michael Green will write the script for the new film.  It’s unlikely any of the original cast and crew from the 2005 and 2007 films would return for the reboot.  In case you’re wondering, Fox actually controls the rights to Marvel’s "Fantastic Four" as long as they continue to make films based on the property.  They have a similar arrangement with Marvel Comics with the "X-Men", "Daredevil" and "Silver Surfer" properties.

Warner Bros. Forms DC Entertainment + No Plans for New Superman Movie
Warner Bros. is rebranding DC Comics into DC Entertainment in an effort to take better advantage of their extensive catalog of comic characters.  The new company will be headed by Warner Bros. vet Diane Nelson, who has overseen the "Harry Potter" franchise and managed the successful Warner Premiere line, which produces the direct-to-DVD/Blu-ray movies based on DC Comics characters:

“It’s no secret that DC has myriad rich and untapped possibilities from its deep library of iconic and lesser-known characters,” said Alan Horn, Warner Bros. Entertainment president and chief operating officier. “While we’ve had great success in films and television, the formation of DC Entertainment will help us to bring more DC properties across additional platforms to fans around the world, while maintaining brand integrity and authenticity. Diane is a terrific choice to lead DC Entertainment, and with Paul in his new role as a valued consultant and contributing editor, both our company and comic fans win.”

Even with the new approach, DC Entertainment president Diane Nelson told MTV that there are still no plans for a new "Superman" movie:

"We actually don’t have any current plans for Superman," said Nelson when asked if the new environment (and the recent legal decision regarding the character) made a "Superman" movie more or less likely in the near future… We’ve obviously done a lot of great things behind the property in our history, and it’s a key part of the family, but we don’t have current plans behind Superman," she said.

Hancock Sequel in the works – main cast returning
While at the Toronto Film Festival, "Hancock" director Peter Berg announced a sequel is in the works for the off-beat superhero movie, with Wil Smith, Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron all lined, up. Berg stated "Everybody’s going to come back" however Variety notes that Sony stressed no deals are yet in place. Berg gave some details to MTV, saying he wants to explore some of the backstory to Hancock and the superhero/gods, also told MTV that he has another big name start in mind to play a new ‘superhero/god’.

I’m up to see Indy 5, but Harrison Ford isn’t getting any younger; they better hurry it up.

I’m also curious if there’s any more news about Ghostbusters 3.

Cool! :)

Can’t wait to see The Green Hornet!

Just reboot Superman as a period piece, set in the ’30s. PLEASE.
Uh… first?

“”Rambo V: The Savage Hunt” will have an element of sci-fi to it.”

That (the sci-fi) ought to help….

I don’t want to be a naysayer about Fox’s involvement but it’d be real interesting to see Pixar do Fantastic Four. They already did a better version with The Incredibles

*Sigh* Still no word on the proposed “When Worlds Collide” remake. c’mon,Mr. Spielberg…

5. Yes! I agree. I’ve always wanted to see someone do Superman as a 1930s show.

Uh oh…. Pirates 4 in summer 11?

#5,9 Absolutely… “Retropolis.” Metropolis looking like Metropolis. I’d rather it be late 1930’s though… at least nothing beyond say… 1950. Then again, if it ended up like Beatty’s Dick Tracy…. yuck.

Okay, just get it over with, and have Tom Welling as Superman. Let it just “jump in” years later, and he’s already Superman. We don’t need another Superman origin story anyway. Just a great Superman adventure would be nice.

#8 Yes, where’s that WWC with strong science when we need it? It always had potential, since the mechanics of a four body problem are realistic, and the science was sound. How would we react if a Neptune-sized object came into the Solar System, with a terrestrial-sized moon, and in the interactions, Earth was obliterated, yet the terrestrial-sized moon “defrosted” and took up Earth’s orbit…

#0 Surrogates looks more and more interesting. Did they use CGI to make surry-Bruce? He looks almost… like that guy from Moonlighting again. ;)

Geez, do we really need another Indiana Jones? Seriously, Indy 4 was disappointing, and stupid Shia LaBeouf didn’t help any.

Pirates 4…I don’t see the need, but I’ll wait to pass judgment until I know what it’s about.

Fantastic Four…meh. The same goes for anything X-Men related, they just don’t have it anymore.

The big news for me is the happy news that Tolkien’s Estate and New Line have reached a settlement. Hopefully The Hobbit will be officially green-lit soon, and things’ll start falling into place.

Fox sat on the Watchmen rights without bothering to do anything about it. I’m not convinced they’ll know what to do with the Fantastic Four.

I say keep Michael Chiklis and Ioan G. in their respective roles, though! Those guys were spot on in casting.

Indy 5 is gonna SUUUUUUCKKKK!!!!

If they reboot the Superman films, they should ADD SOME ACTION!! The comics are filled with awesome rough-and-tumble super-powered slamdowns, but so far the movies go for the “epic” feel by making the villain Lex Luthor and the inanimate kryptonite EVERY TIME it seems. I want to see an ACTION Superman movie – I want to see Superman kicking and punching the bad guys into oblivion!

Akiva Goldsman? People like to blame Joel Schumacher for “Batman & Robin” but Goldsman *wrote* the thing.

I’d keep him far, far away from any comic franchise.

Why re-boot The Fantastic Four? Seriously. The two previous installments were acceptable enough. If you are going to re-boot a franchise, for pete’s sake, reboot G.I.Joe! And be smart about it.

I didn’t think the Fantastic Four movies were very good, especially the 2nd. So I can see a reboot. I hope my significant other never sees this post. :)

And yes, for cripes sake, put Tom Welling in the cape and make a GREAT superman movie. Superman Returns was…. meh… fair… but certainly had it’s flaws. Say, I wonder if that JJ Abrams guy is very busy? They should ask him to do Superman.

There was a time when zombie films were few and far between, I liked it that way. I enjoy George romero’s films very much, I wasnt a big fan of the dawn of the dead remake but liked it, I didnt like the remake of day of the dead. Shaun of the dead was very funny. there is zombieland which looks fun, but after watching the trailer for the plan 9 remake..I am suddenly burnt out on the whole zombie thing. I was hoping that the movie would at least be campy, or even a comedy. Nope! more zombies…

Seems like just up to a few years ago, most movie studios wouldnt even touch a zombie film, now it seems that alot of them are doing it, I’ll say this..no one does it better than romero.

Looking forward to Indy 5 – bring it on. Love them all!

It’s a mystery to me how the film industry is treating this huge iconic character of Superman. The first movie was not bad, but also not so exciting. Then they make a series of trashy B-productions, and then decades later comes Superman Returns, which is boring, uninspired and features no better idea than to bring on Lex Luthor again for the umpteenth time, with basically the same sinister scheme as in the first movie.
And now they don’t have any plans for future films – understandable after they completely messed up Superman.
On the other hand the F4 get rebooted even though the previous two films were not nearly as bad as the Superman movies. (In fact I liked the two F4 movies.)

I don’t get it!

Will Rambo V be facing the predator or an “alien” RAMBO “AVP”
kinda sad…
reboot… Fantastic 4…wasn’t that just out 2 years ago?
I agree…Tom Welling as Superman…in the present..no moe origin story…just any villian other than just Luthor…Bizarro, even the Zod trio…though I enjoyed Kevin Spacey in the Returns.
Cannot wait for TRON!!!

I wonder what Dr. Jones will think of Elvis?

@5 – Ooh, that’s a great idea! Along the lines of the Dave Fleischer cartoons – the wimpy Clark Kent, the somewhat naive yet headstrong Lois Lane – no Jimmy Olsen, no Fortress of Solitude, just a superhero trying to help people and make his way in Metropolis.

22: Brainiac is the villain to go with.

Mel Gibson would be a good choice for a Director of a SUPERMAN film.

For one, Gibson has a close relationship with the original Superman director, Richard Donner (from his work on the Lethal Weapon films). He would respect the Christopher Reeves backstory enough for it to feel like part of the series (…but not in that weird ‘retro’ Singer kind of way). He is great at directing epics, and still has good relations with Warners. I think they should give him a chance. Hell, Gibson would even make a good Jor-El!

I watched “The Patriot” the other night, and I thought while watching that film the Mel Gibson would make a really good Jor-El. If he was directing a Superman film, that role would probably be the right size for him (and what A-List actor is going to turn down the chance of playing a part that Brando played??) As for the cast, they really should use the Smallville cast. Youth is on their side (they are all in their early 30s.) You could have them star in Superman features for years.

I’m not a huge Smallville fan, but I can easily see the three actors who play Clark, Lois, and Lex on the big screen.

Nothing on Batman or Star Trek???

5

I’d love that. Set in the late 30’s, early 40’s. The Max Fleischer Superman cartoons of the 40’s are still the ultimate to me. They were good enough for “Sky Captain” and many other imitatores to emulate. I’m all for that.

28

oops…imitators

Imagine JJ Abrams directing Superman… man he would have a field day with all them lens flares, especially in the flying shots! :-)

I am amazed they can’t make a good SUPERMAN film. I would love to see a period one. When I saw that SKY CAPTAIN film I kept hoping Superman would fly into a scene! Heck SUPERMAN RETURNS could of been cool if they had not tied it to the earlier films, used the 90’s animated series as a template and boom a cool SUPERMAN film. Funny all that money and talent and they really miss the obvious!

With the FANTASTIC FOUR 20th Fox really screwed up. Both films were missing the cool Kirby fun and imagery! They really messed up Dr. Doom, the Silver Surfer/Galactus storyline seemed forced and just terrible. To me as others have said THE INCREDIBLES was a better FF4 film. Get Brad Bird as a director and maybe a good FF4 film could be made.

Public Enemies looks really, really cool. Why can’t the live-action movies be like that?

Indy 4 was one of the worst movies I’ve ever seen. Really. Let it go.

The Kato pic looks awful

we sure could use another indy
but maybe it’s time the indy franchise was rebooted like trek
so who is going to play the new younger indy?

Holy comic books.

As for Indy 5……………………….

I’d see it. But God, they need to do something to improve on Crystal Skull. (Shouldn’t be hard, guys.)

What the frak has taken Pixar so long to get to a sequel of The Incredibles??!! (An infinitely superior Fantastic Four movie than either of the Fantastic Four movies.)

#16 – Simon “Akiva Goldsman? People like to blame Joel Schumacher for “Batman & Robin” but Goldsman *wrote* the thing”

Let’s not forget the wonderful job he did “rebooting” “Lost In Space”
(Sarcasm Mode Cancel)

Yeah – He booted it straight onto the junk pile… (Oh the pain, the pain…)

#34 – Mr. Atoz “The Kato pic looks awful”

I think if you follow the link to “Superhero Hype” and read the captions, you’ll find that the pic of “Kato” at the wheel is the stunt double.

For all the pre-Indy 4 talk about how Harrison Ford was getting too old to play Indy, I really was glad to see him shine as Indiana Jones again – he was totally freaking believable and kicked ass.

What killed Indy 4 wasn’t the gray in Ford’s hair – it was the incomprehensible plot and generally bad writing! It’s sad to say, but for all of Ford’s physical training, discipline, and overall A-game that he brought to the screen – it felt like Lucas\Spielberg just phoned in their end of the work from some golf course somewhere!

I will send a magical internet thought-beam to Lucas\Speilberg in the hopes that I’m not alone in thinking this and someone will eventually get the hint across to them before they move forward on another fridge-nuking: Your iconic 70-year-old leading man is willing to bust his behind at the gym day after day and generally do whatever it takes short of selling his soul to the devil (as far as we know) to bring his best possible presence to a project – that’s a completely priceless and irreplaceable asset that the gods of cinema will not forgive the squandering of on account of bad writing and endless cartoonish sight gags.

Moving on now – my own Indiana Jones thoughts.

I know that Indiana Jones is something of an amalgam of 30’s action\adventure serials, but with Indy getting older it might be interesting to see a little more of the film noir elements glimpsed at in the first three Indy films. As we all know, the film noir genre has pretty much been the playground of iconic butt-kickers over the age of 50 since before Hitchcock, and their leading men tend to always have a certain grace to them. I had some mixed feelings on Indy as the socially awkward fish out of water in the 1950’s because the first three films depicts him as having many friends (and enemies) all over the world, and it was something of a hard sell to believe that someone as social as Indy would be as isolated as he was at the outset of Crystal Skull. Should Indy 5 go through I think I could certainly do with less of the 1950’s socially awkward Indy and have an easier time believing in a 1950’s Indy tinted with a few more shades of grace a la James Stewart from 1958’s Vertigo.

I know that Lucas\Spielberg were wanting to do some funky genre mash-ups for Indy 4, which of course led to them doing a hybrid of 30’s adventure serials and 50’s sci-fi – so why not do something more film-noir for the next one and give us an Indy adventure we can actually recognize while still keeping him in the 1950’s you know? Lucas and Spielberg will be hard pressed to stay on task and keep their project from nuking the fridge either way. Here’s hoping they can take a tip from Harrison Ford and find a writers gym to tone up their next story.

– 24thCRS!

I guess I’m in the minority in that I thought Indy 4 was ok. Better than 2, maybe better than 3….

I’m probably also in the minority because I thought the 2nd and 3rd Pirates movies sucked. Even the first one was just barely above ok…. like a B -. I wanted to get up and walk out of the third one, but I was at home, and the significant other seemed to like it…. :) Maybe the 4th will redeem the series…

wow i love all these shows i am a huge fan how long does it take for just one?

The Incredibles was about a nuclear family. FF isn’t like that at all. All superheroes in the former look human. That’s only true for three FFers. No one in the FF has superspeed. ….

Saying that “The Incredibles” is a “better Fantastic Four film” doesn’t make sense, IMO.
