Today the replica maker Quantum Mechanix announced their first available retail products from the 2009 Star Trek. Starting to day you can pre-order any of four replica badges, exactly like those worn by the new crew of USS Enterprise. See below for more details, pictures and ordering information
Need some badges?
In November Qmx worked with Paramount on a special exclusive Blu-ray set for Best Buy, which included a set of four replica badges. So the only way to get the badges was with that set, until now. Today Qmx announced the badges (the same ones from the exclusive Best Buy Blu-ray set) will be available for retail, sold separately for $9.95 each. There are four different badges to choose: Command, Science, Engineering and Medical. Each badge is made from steel and hand-burnished. All are screen-accurate replicas of the original badges used for the film (although those were made of prop plastic).
According to QMx, the badges will be shipping by April 9th. They will be available at comic shops and other retailers.

Qmx has the license for all replicas from the 2009 Star Trek movie. For 2010 Qmx is planning a number of products, including an Artisan Series Enterprise replica, maquette statues, a phaser replica, and more. Look for a TrekMovie update on these other Qmx Star Trek replicas in the near future.

Wow, I never even noticed that Medical had an insignia separate from Science in the new movie.
These look beautiful, and it’s a nice touch that the packaging looks as good as the badges. Always good to see a company put in the extra effort on a cool product!

@5 – I’ll have to go back and re-watch because I never noticed the medical badge had a plus/cross symbol on it. I thought McCoy just wore a science badge. VERY CURIOUS.

Nice. But what’s up with the ship model? That was supposed to be out about 6 months ago, as I recall. BTW, the small metal one issued with some Blu-Ray sets was NOT screen-accurate. The saucer section was too thin. Otherwise, a good piece. Another point is that the so-called limited edition was not numbered.
I hope they plan on doing a Starfleet Academy ring replica.

In the original series McCoy had the science badge – however nurse Chapel had a red cross in it – the medical badge may of been on the nurses and not actually seen on screen – however it is consistent with the original series.
Weird that McCoy doesn’t wear a medical badge. I didn’t know there *were* medical badges.
I fashioned tha’ Command badges (large missile on ’em) and tha’ Engineerin’ badges (lotsa’ curly doos on ’em) inta’ a set o’ pants fur’ meself! Cost a lot… and chaffs a bit… But I do impress tha’ lass cadets! And I be shiny below!

Now that that’s out of the way…COOL! Maybe in the sequel they will make the little designs closer to the way they looked in TOS (I prefer the original engineering symbol’s lines to the all-curves version above).

Nice Badges. I have the full set of 12 that were released many years ago by Franklin Mint. All made from sterling silver with 24 carat gold plate. These would make a great addition.
Agreed that it’s odd that McCoy never wore a medical badge (in TOS or in the new film). There weren’t many closeups on Enterprise medical personnel so seeing one on screen may be difficult.
By the by, watching TOS on Blu-ray the other week, we got a good, clear shot of Christine Chapel’s insignia. It was VERY obviously a red cross glued/painted over a sciences insignia. (The black curve of the top of the circle was visible over the top of the cross.)

Chapel was wearing the red cross insignia in season one, as I noted in post 19.

These are the same pins from the Blu-Ray special editions from Best Buy. They are also screen accurate.
McCoy graduated from the Academy, and isn’t just there as medical personnel, one might presume.
In TOS, McCoy clearly more like a MD/PhD, considering the number of cures he develops, etc. I’d always written his having a Science badge off to his extra qualifications.
His alt-universe existence (presumably no different from the prime) shows us outright he went through full academy training AFTER already being an MD, so it sorta all makes sense.
On his regular shirt, McCoy had the science insignia. On his short sleeved shirt, he had the science insignia as well. I just found a picture of him in his short sleeved shirt and it had the science insignia on it. But I was pretty sure McCoy did wear one with the medical insignia a couple of times.

I got the Best Buy badges with the blu-ray disc. Are these the same except for the packaging, obviously?
And if anyone is too cheap to buy a pin, and they have one of the 6 inch figures, they can just take the base(which is the same design as the badge) and glue it to their shirt. Of course, it might come off in the wash, but I suspect a few folks don’t even bother washing their shirts! :-)

The individual badges are $10 each. The Blu-ray set came with all four and the Blu-ray movie, natch. I paid about $40 for that set a few months ago. I’d say I came out ahead.
In fact, I just checked out the Best Buy website. They still have the Blu-ray set with badges for $40.
I bought the Best Buy set with the badges and I wear them on my business suits’ lapel, you’d be surprised how many people know that it represents Star Trek…

according to Qmx and Paramount the ones used on set were made with the rapid prototyping machine out of a polymer of some sort, or ‘plastic’. Qmx has a whole pile of the original ones which they used to create the design for their steel ones.
I am reporting what the licensee and licensor are saying, and confirming again today. I dont make this stuff up you know

As stated in the article, these are the same badges, but in individual boxes. According to qmx the best buy bluray thing was a single run and when supplies run out they run out. Not sure how many are left
If it is true that the set versions were made of plastic, then I guess I can feel good knowing that the pins I got from the Blu Ray set are “superior”.
Steel pins are better than “plastic” pins in my opinion. :-)
sweet….can’t wait….will be nice to throw on my bag i use everyday….i remember back in ’92….i was 10 and we went to DC and the air and space museum at the smithsonian and they had next gen pins like this…..they werent the cool QVC sound ones, but back in 92 before the internet if your local comic store didnt have it, it didnt exist….best $20 i spent…got a next gen 1:1 pin and an enterprise-a scaled toy (which were rare)
That screenshot of Majel with the taped up badge is hilarious. I guess someone thought “ah, what the hell. That won’t register on screen.” Plus, back then people didn’t have any way of rewatching stuff since VCRs did not exist yet.
Doubly funny since badges like this is what Gene and Majel later made money with.
The ones in the movie were actually metal and, at least the ones I saw, were applied with a double sided adhesive so Im with James Cawley on this one…Paramount generally doesnt have a clue (take a look at that ‘screen used TOS Phaser with COA from CBS’ that just sold on Ebay for huge money…not even close to being real. As to what QMX was given I dunno but the all the ones I know of were metal.
The Command pin fits me the best.
#46 is correct! They were made of metal and did attach with double sided adhesive tape. No mistakes on my part.
