GENRE MOVIE NEWS

Matthew Vaughn will direct X-Men: First Class; Set for June 3, 2011
Matthew Vaugnn ("Kick-Ass") will direct "X-Men: First Class" for 20th Century Fox and the studio says filming will begin this summer with a release date of June 3, 2011 (leading some to assume that preliminary casting is already underway). The film is based on a story by Bryan Singer, who will produce alongside Lauren Shuler Donner:

"I’ve been a fan of Matthew’s since LAYER CAKE," said Singer. "He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film."

Here’s the current synopsis for the film:

X-MEN: FIRST CLASS, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.

In related news, screenwriters Zack Stentz and Ashley Edward Miller were interviewed by io9 about the film. Here’s one excerpt where the two mention "Star Trek" as an influence in their writing:

io9: Did you feel any pressure/desire/necessity to "reintroduce" us to the X-Men?

Zack Stentz: In some sense you should be reintroducing your characters in every film.

Ashley Edward Miller: The thing is, we’ve been here before. We did it on Terminator for two seasons. We did it on Thor. You learn how to approach the material as something you can live in and not just nod at.

ZS: Well, look at Star Trek (2009) — that’s a film that did a great job of acknowledging that its characters are part of the culture, yet treating them as fresh and new to the audience.

AEM: I would also argue that if you’re telling a story where your characters can no longer surprise the audience, you’re telling the wrong story. These characters surprised us at every turn, sometimes in really wonderful and emotional ways. Those moments are what make movies great.

Rise of the Apes set for June 24, 2011; Rupert Wyatt will direct
20th Century Fox has announced that they will release the prequel "Rise of the Apes" (tentative title) on June 24, 2011 and Rupert Wyatt has been confirmed to direct:

RISE OF THE APES (tentative title) is an origin story in the truest sense of the term. Set in present day San Francisco, the film is a reality-based cautionary tale, a science fiction/science fact blend, where man’s own experiments with genetic engineering lead to the development of intelligence in apes and the onset of a war for supremacy.

Iron Man 2 opening weekend
"
Iron Man 2" makes its highly anticipated debut this weekend when it opens at a record 4,380 theaters (the previous record belonged to "The Dark Knight" with 4,366 theaters). The film is currently tracking to do between $155 million to $160 million for the 3-day, possibly beating "The Dark Knight’s" $158.4M record. "Iron Man 2" actually opened internationally earlier in the week and has already grossed more than $132 million. Director Jon Favreau was recently interviewed by Vanity Fair and the villain The Mandarin was brought up. Here’s what he had to say about the character:

Vanity Fair: Iron Man’s best-known villain is The Mandarin. In Christopher Nolan’s Batman series, he waited until the second film to incorporate The Joker. In Robert Downey Jr.’s other franchise, Sherlock Holmes, they’re waiting until the second film to make Professor Moriarty the main villain. Is there a strategy to waiting before using an arch enemy as the antagonist?

Jon Favreau: Yeah, I think you have to really foam the runway for that one. Because if you think a Soviet villain is anachronistic, the way the Mandarin was depicted in the books would be very distasteful, nowadays. And so you have to crystallize The Mandarin down to what it is that makes him scary and intimidating. We have to create the world, and the world we’ve created up to this point has been based in technology. I think all of that’s going to change with Thor and Captain America. Once magic and supernatural stuff is introduced by other directors at other ends of the franchise, that might be able to form The Mandarin a bit. But to have a guy dressed like a medieval Asian nobleman with ten magical rings did not seem like it fit with what people like about Iron Man. The Mandarin would probably need to be interpreted with a large degree of creative license because it will not look like what’s in the comics.

Favreau also talked about the possibility of incorporating the "Demon in a Bottle" storyline in future "Iron Man" movies:

"I think the closest you’ll get is what we did in this one. You obliquely address issues that were raised in the books. If you look at the storyline of "Demon in a Bottle," we follow the plot points of that. We don’t delve as deeply into it totally, because "Demon in a Bottle" was a very depressing exploration of alcoholism. Here, we obliquely touch upon things, but the reason Rhodey [Don Cheadle] first puts the suit on is because Iron Man is not capable of handling the mantle of his responsibility. And that’s the same thing in this movie. We do a tip of the hat to that, but we do it in a tone people are accustomed to for our franchise. There are so many comic-book movies operating on parallel paths; if we became a little bit too playful, it would have verged on Spider-Man. If we had gotten too dark, it would have verged on Batman. So we have our own lane in the highway that we like to stick to."

Head on over to Vanity Fair to read the rest of the Q&A.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn hitting theaters on November 18, 2011; Tom Condon writes note to fans
Summit Entertainment has announced that "The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn" will hit theaters on November 18, 2011. The studio hasn’t indicated whether it will be one film or two, but in a note to fans posted on Facebook, director Bill Condon seems to indicate it’ll be two films:

I just want to say hello to all of you and let you know that I’m stoked to be getting underway on the adventure of making BREAKING DAWN. As you’ve probably heard, I’ve been given a very warm welcome by Stephenie and Team Summit – who are super-focused, as you know, on getting these movies right.

Condon also revealed there will be no musical numbers in the film. You can read the rest of his note here.

But before that film, there still is this summer’s "The Twilight Saga: Eclipse", here are some promotional stills [more at Cinema Blend and Movies.SpoilerTV.com]

Batman 3 confirmed; Set for July 20, 2012
Warner Brothers has confirmed that the third "Batman" film from Christopher Nolan will hit theaters on July 20, 2012. That puts the film in competition with several other high-profile summer 2012 releases including of course the "Star Trek" sequel (6/29/2012) and "Spider-Man" (7/3/2012):

The studio has barely begun the process of developing the movie; Nolan is in post-production on "Inception" but is hammering out a story with David Goyer.

There is no title at this point and no start date. July is becoming Nolan’s month. "The Dark Knight" opened on July 18, 2008, and "Inception" debuts July 16.

Official synopsis for Inception released
Meanwhile, Warner Brothers has released the official synopsis for Christopher Nolan’s current project, the upcoming sci-fi psychological thriller "Inception":

Acclaimed filmmaker Christopher Nolan directs an international cast in an original sci-fi actioner that travels around the globe and into the intimate and infinite world of dreams. Dom Cobb (Leonardo DiCaprio) is a skilled thief, the absolute best in the dangerous art of extraction, stealing valuable secrets from deep within the subconscious during the dream state, when the mind is at its most vulnerable. Cobb’s rare ability has made him a coveted player in this treacherous new world of corporate espionage, but it has also made him an international fugitive and cost him everything he has ever loved. Now Cobb is being offered a chance at redemption. One last job could give him his life back but only if he can accomplish the impossible-inception. Instead of the perfect heist, Cobb and his team of specialists have to pull off the reverse: their task is not to steal an idea but to plant one. If they succeed, it could be the perfect crime. But no amount of careful planning or expertise can prepare the team for the dangerous enemy that seems to predict their every move. An enemy that only Cobb could have seen coming. This summer, your mind is the scene of the crime.

Incubus sounds like an interesting idea, the first in quite awhile…

I’m also getting excited about Predators, even though I’m not a huge fan of the franchise.

Gawd, I hope they get Captain America right!!

Rise of the Apes sounds interesting ,,

I’m probably going to check out “Iron Man 2″ this weekend, despite the so-so reviews.

Also looking forward to ‘Predators”. I hope they don’t screw this one up.

As for “X-Men: First Class”, I don’t think we necessarily need another “X-Men” film right now. I think they should just stick with “Wolverine”.

It is exactly a year to the day since STAR TREK was released here in Australia so I would like to wish all of my fellow Trekkies a very happy anniversary to mark the occasion!! :)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IptbC3p2lCk

Okay … a Smurfs movie is still a bad idea, but a “Smurfs in New York” movie is even worse. I hope Azaria was just taking a quick walk on his way to a soundstage somewhere :)

And God help me, I might rent it.

awwww man that Smurfs movie is gonna suck so badly that its gonna make Plan 9 From Outer Space look like The Dark Knight by comparison…:|

I think its Gas that Iron Man 2 was released in ireland a full week before it was out in the states!!

Its cool getting to see a movie like that a bit earlier than expected…

Same with Star Trek actually, that came out in Ireland on May 7th….

Good lord that’s depressing. That many films in progress, and Batman 3 is probably the only one that has a chance of not-sucking …. mind you, 3 good movies in a row is asking a lot from anyone!

Looking forward to FIRST CLASS. Two X films in a row, it’s FC in 2011 and Wolverine 2 in 2012! And they have yet to announce the releasedate for “X-Men Origins: Deadpool”. Great times for X-Men fans!!!

I am also looking forward to Batman 3. It will be THE summer movie 2012 (sorry JJ Trek). I hope they will bring the new Batman saga to a conclusion with this one, but I trust in Nolan’s capability to create something outstanding.

Saw Iron Man 2 at the midnite show.. Screw the “reviewers”. IT ROCKS! And definitely stay until the end of the extremely populous credits. It sets up a future Marvel movie very nicely.

–’nuff said!

THE SMURFS WILL WIN MORE ACADEMY AWARDS & GROSS MORE MONEY WORLDWIDE THAN AVATAR & TITANIC COMBINED!! I CAN SEE THE VISION! CAN YOU??

I’ve seen IM2 twice now and it’s very disappointing. I saw it the second time because friends wanted to go and I thought perhaps I’d missed something first time out but sadly, no. Boring story, boring action (apart from the Monaco sequence which is still spoiled with silly humour) – such a let down from the first one which I loved. Here’s hoping JF gets his mojo back for Cowboys & Aliens.

^ No, but I can see your crazy ALL CAPS from a mile away… sheesh. Chill.

The Machete trailer is a fiery piece of Awesome-ness!
Yes, that’s with a capital ‘A.’

They couldn’t do The Madarine. So is that the excuse for using the same villain story as the first film.

Bad guy replicates Starks power source and creates more suits. Puts suit on and fight iron man.

So much good stuff in iron man 2 but was there no one in the room that said “hey guys i just don’t know if using the same villain story with minor tweaks and another actor is such a good idea”?

Lame lame lame.

I hate Smurfs. I wish the movie nothing but the worst. I picture something on the order of that horrible Brendan Fraser talking animals picture that’s currently making the rounds and that I have mercifully forgottent the title of. Drivel, dreck, and shite.

I’ve seen some of the advance previews and sneak peaks of Splice and they seem to be playing it up as a horror movie. That would imply that the creature is a predator. And from that picture, it seems to have it’s eyes on the side of it’s head which is more like most prey species. Land based predators have forward facing eyes, in general. This, obviously, is a disaster.

And am I the only one that is kind of burned out on comic book adaptations?

Kick-Ass Balls to the Wall?

dear lord above you gotta be joking…….

ok, saw Iron Man, the Super 8 trailer, it’s so Cloverfield. It has to be a Cloverfield prequel, I mean it just looks like it and yeah. My money’s on a Cloverfield prequel, no matter what Abrams says. Guess we’ll know for sure later

Iron Man will be so kool to see. Can’t wait to see what they do with Batman 3 and Capt America. Looking forward to the Hobbit and the last of the harry Potters. But what about The Greatest American Hero.

Transformers 3??? please….no more..please….X Men again huh??
what happened to the Magneto origins movie they talked about last year?
Ironman 2 rocks….!!!

Arrrrrrrrr… I smurfed smurf smurfing smurferoo smurf that be smurfing smurf. Had ta’ be said…

Oh, and I woulda’ like ta’ see transexualformers on Castro Street rather than another Bay bomb. Hmmmmm… trans-sexuals… Ex-Men?

Captain America will be harrrrrrrrd ta’ pull oof’, I think. Thar’s something aboot’ tha’ character that doesn’t translate well onscreen…

And Thor? If I wanna’ large muscular blonde Fabio bloke chasin’ me wit’ a hammer then, again, I’d go ta’ Castro Street… Maybe I will anyways… does sound kinda’ fun…

‘Cross tha’ rainbow bridge of Nascar
Whar’ tha’ boomin’ heavens roar
Ye’ll be behold wit’ breatheless wonder-
Tha’ God o’ Thunder, Miiiiiiiiiiighty Hemsworth?

I thought Gargamel be a hoot…

I’ll see Irony Man tomorrow… wearin’ me tinfoil suit powered by a Jiffy Pop ring on me chest…

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…

#15

That was the smurfing idea…and what the smurf is your problem?

#23 BND

Oh, and I woulda’ like ta’ see transexualformers on Castro Street rather than another Bay bomb. Hmmmmm… trans-sexuals… Ex-Men?

That is absolute pure gold. Spit take worthy. Well played, Beany.

Well, if Hollywood is hell bent on remaking everything, when is Michael Bay going to get around to “Space:1999”? I mean, it’s a natural for him; spaceships crashing and blowing up, nuclear explosions, moon blown out of orbit by a huge explosion. With a big budget, now he can show us what happens on Earth when the moon is ripped away… earthquakes, tidal waves, floods, the White House explodes, the Eiffel Tower collapses on tourists…etc…

Science, logic, story? Who cares! Lot’s of stuff blowing up and being destroyed – that’s what counts.

( with tongue on half-firmly in cheek )

#26

Seriously, though, Space:1999 could be a good flick. DO NOT change the Eagles. But maybe instead of the moon leaving earth via gigantic lunar explosion, how about something as equally non-sensical as a rogue black hole/worm hole or other galactic anomoly collides with the moon and it’s inhabitants and they all get transported to different parts of the galaxy and or universe.

Actually, this would be a better series than a movie. Get me Ronald D. Moore on the phone.

Oh yeah, you’d have to change the name to Space:2029 or something. Maybe we’ll decide to go back there by then.

Hey. How about a Remake of 2001 a Space Oddesey. But would havt to be renamed Space 2051 or something. Also. They could remake Earth Vs the Flying Saucers. Or they could remake King Kong Vs God Zilla. What about remaking John Carpenters. They Live.

Now you’re just busting my chops. Howz about we remake you and calls it Xanadu, bub?

A “Dark Crystal” sequel? But, after 28 years, are Jen and Kira still available!? (Not to mention Aughra…)

Looking forward to POTA: Rise of the Apes. Too bad it’s not a historical documentary. The apes would probably be a better steward of this planet than we have..

Put Downey in the Trek movie. It would drive Ben Stiller crazy.

THX…

Thanke’ and “arrrrrrrrrr,” me matey! And dunna’ take no crap here!

‘Course I might like ta’ be in some Xanadu… Is Olivia Neutron Bomb still hot?

Michael Bay presents:
“Xana-Don’t”

And now fur’ some original programmin’… In yer’ dreams!

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr…

YAY ANTHONY! Everything worked this time except for one video link! Keep up the great work!

NO!!! No remake of ‘2001!!!’ There can be no tampering with near perfection… besides, a remake would surely lead to Stanley Kubrick coming back to haunt the production.

As to a remake of ‘Space: 1999,’ give ’em time!

I just saw “Iron Man 2” today. It was a good movie but not great like the first one. Robert Downey Jr. was great again and a ton of fun to watch, while Don Cheadle and Gwyneth Paltrow were good in their parts as well.
On the other hand, Mickey Rourke was bland in his role as Whiplash and I had a hard time understanding everything he said due to his Russian accent. Whiplash just wasn’t as interesting as the previous villain played by Jeff Bridges. And the plot was pretty much a rehash of the last movie.
The action scenes were great but nothing we haven’t seen before. I hope next time, the writers come up with an original plot that doesn’t revolve as much around the U.S military.

“Iron Man 2” was a step back.

37

“I hope next time, the writers come up with an original plot that doesn’t revolve as much around the U.S military.”

Yeah, seeing as how Stark Industries built its reputation as a weapons manufacturer for the US military and Tony’s best friend is a Colonel in the Air Force–I wouldn’t expect to see any future Iron Man movies dealing with hobbits or teenage vampires.

Good flick by the way. Unfortunately, it’s just not as brilliant as the first installment.

I liked iron man2-clever well written script whose only flaw was yeh its the same plot as the 1st mostly–story was clever n funny with downey great as stark-ironically the movie stark has ten times the personality of the comic–the you complete me line was cut from the movie i think–hammer was played a bit too hammy to me–reminded me of a rick moranis imitation mostly–rourke had a great visual prescense as the bad russian–i loved starks dads scenes, coyly spoofing Walt Disney and disneyland-inside joke since they own marvel now)-the end credits even had a song spoofing theres a great big beautiful tomorrow from the sherman bros for the disneyland carousel of progress–and it was written by one of the shernan bros–that was better than the final scene to me—

chris- did you do anything to mark the anniversary of the release of star trek?

as for 3D- after about 10 minutes I forget about it…

@37 Agreed. I couldn’t believe i was watching an almost identical villain story to the first film.

The best parts of iron Man 2 were dialoge between the characters but why repeat the storyline of iron Man 1?

I like Don Cheadle but replacing Terrence Howard with him weakens the continuity and takes you out of the movie and reminds you it is really only a movie and people pretending. I think most of us would rather switch off and just enjoy but then something like that just niggles.

There was stuff to like in the movie but it fails on enough levels to establish that yes it was indeed a step back.

All the stuff ups were obvious ones too so no excuses.

Poor Hank Azaria. Used to be married to Helen Hunt. Now he is in a Smurfs movie. Poor guy–spiraling down, down, down. Reminds me of the first episode of South Park when one of the boys’ baby brother is up in an alien spaceship and he says to his infant brother “Do your impression of David Caruso’s career.” And he jumps off the ship and plummets like an anvil. Oh well…

Just came back from Iron Man 2! DO NOT LEAVE until after the credits roll! I will not spoil it, but the tag-scene is a teaser for the next film from MARVEL Ent.!!! IM2 was AS GOOD AS the original! A few slow spots, heavy with dialogue, but the clash with Whiplash in Monaco was amazing! Stark’s legacy was revealed, and was quite touching. If you ask me, this is a solid sequel, and Favreau is easily 2 for 2!

LOVE the Thor pic! Can’t wait! Glad they went with the contemporary costume.

Saw the trailer for Super 8. Can’t miss with JJ, & SS. Looks as original as Cloverfield, and I loved Cloverfield.

X-Men:First Class will rest on its casting! I hope we see Hank McCoy, Emma Frost, and Cyclops! Let the spotlight shine on some newer mutants, and give Storm, Wolverine, and Sabertooth take a rest. I hope they learn from the past! And I hope Brian Singer has a strong influence, even though he is NOT directing! I may be in the minority, BUT I actually liked X3.

Batman 3 will have a lot to live up to given the performance by Ledger as Joker! But if anyone can create a worthy followup, its Nolan, Goyer, and Nolan. Keep the faith…

– Predators looks more like a direct sequel to AVP franchise..but i still hope it will be a good movie..
