Sci-Fi TV Tuesday: Terra Nova, The Event, Warehouse 13, Doctor Who, Fringe, Teen Wolf, Smallville, LOST + more

The TV season may be wrapping up, but we still have tons to cover in this weeks In Sci-Fi TV.  We have early details and peeks for new shows like Terra Nova, The Cape, The Event, and Nikita. Plus lots of news and previews for continuing & returning shows like Doctor Who, Warehouse 13, Eureka, Smallville and Supernatural. There are even updates on exiting shows like FlashForward, Lost, and Heroes.

GENRE TV NEWS – NEW SHOWS

Terra Nova will air in 2011 + Concept art
FOX has confirmed that they’ve picked up Steven Spielberg’s prehistoric time travel series "Terra Nova" and it will premiere in early 2011. Brannon Braga ("Star Trek: Enterprise") serves as showrunner. FOX also released a piece of concept art:

From executive producers Steven Spielberg, Peter Chernin, Brannon Braga (24, "Star Trek: Enterprise") and David Fury ("Lost," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer") comes an epic family adventure 85 million years in the making. TERRA NOVA follows an ordinary family embarking on an incredible journey back in time to prehistoric Earth as a small part of a massive experiment to save the human race.

In the year 2149 the world is dying. The planet is overdeveloped, overcrowded and overpolluted. With the majority of plant and animal life extinct, devotion to science has brought mankind to the brink of destruction, but has also provided its only hope for salvation. Knowing there is no way to reverse the damage to the planet, a coalition of scientists has managed to open up a fracture in the space-time continuum, creating a portal to prehistoric Earth. This doorway leads to an amazing world, one that allows for a last-ditch effort to save the human race … possibly changing the future by correcting the mistakes of the past.

The series centers on the Shannon family as they join the tenth pilgrimage of settlers to TERRA NOVA, the first colony of humans in this second chance for civilization. JIM SHANNON, a devoted father with a checkered past, guides his family through this new land of limitless beauty, mystery and terror. Jim’s wife, ELISABETH SHANNON, is a trauma surgeon chosen through a global lottery as a new addition to Terra Nova’s medical team. JOSH SHANNON is their son, mourning the girl he left behind, as he’s torn between two role models – his father and the charismatic COMMANDER FRANK TAYLOR, the leader of the settlement, and the heroic first pioneer through the time portal. MADDY SHANNON, Jim and Elizabeth’s teen daughter, is as independent and adventurous as her parents, but her distrust of authority soon leads her on a dangerous path.

In addition to blue skies, rolling rivers and lush vegetation, TERRA NOVA offers new opportunities and fresh beginnings to its recent arrivals, but the Shannons have brought with them a familial secret that may threaten their citizenship in this utopia. Additionally these adventurers soon discover that this healthy, vibrant world is not as idyllic as it initially appears. The areas surrounding Terra Nova are filled with dangerous dinosaurs, and other prehistoric threats, as well as external forces that may be intent on destroying this new world before it begins.

But perhaps even more threatening than what lies outside the protective walls is the Shannons’ realization that something sinister may be happening inside TERRA NOVA as not everyone on this mission has the same intentions of how best to save mankind.

The Event: Synopsis, trailer, clip and cast interviews
One of the 2010-2011 pickups from NBC is for a series called "The Event". NBC describes the show as a conspiracy thriller, but it clearly has a genre tilt to it. Here’s the press release followed by a trailer, clip and cast interviews:

"The Event" is an emotional, high-octane conspiracy thriller that follows Sean Walker (Jason Ritter, "The Class"), an Everyman who investigates the mysterious disappearance of his fiancée, Leila (Sarah Roemer, "Disturbia"), and unwittingly begins to expose the biggest cover-up in U.S. history.

Sean’s quest will send ripples through the lives of an eclectic band of strangers, including: newly elected U.S. President Martinez (Golden Globe nominee Blair Underwood, "In Treatment"); Sophia (Emmy Award nominee Laura Innes, "ER"), who is the leader of a mysterious group of detainees; and Sean’s shadowy father-in-law (Scott Patterson, "Gilmore Girls"). Their futures are on a collision course in a global conspiracy that could ultimately change the fate of mankind. Ian Anthony Dale ("Daybreak") and Emmy winner Željko Ivanek ("Damages") also star in the ensemble drama.

ABC picks up No Ordinary Family
ABC has picked up a superhero drama called "No Ordinary Famly" starring Michael Chiklis and Julie Benz:

The Powells are about to go from ordinary to extraordinary. After 16 years of marriage, Jim and Stephanie’s relationship lacks the spark it once had, and their family life now consists of balancing work and their two children, leaving little time for family bonding. During a family vacation set up by Jim in an attempt to reconnect, their plane crashes into the Amazon River. But this is where the fun starts for the Powells, as they soon discover that something’s not quite right. Each of them now possesses unique and distinct superpowers. But saving and savoring their family life will be equally important, as they try to find purpose for their new powers and embark on a journey to find out what defines and unifies them. The Powells are a totally relatable family who happen to be a little bit amazing.

Michael Chiklis ("The Shield") stars as Jim Powell, Julie Benz ("Dexter") as Stephanie Powell, Romany Malco ("The 40-Year-Old Virgin") as George St. Cloud, Tate Donovan ("Damages") as Mitch McCutcheon, Autumn Reeser as Katie Andrews, Christina Chang as Yvonne Cho, Kay Panabaker as Daphne Powell and Jimmy Bennett as JJ Powell.

The pilot was written and executive-produced by Jon Feldman. The series is executive-produced by Feldman, Greg Berlanti, Morgan Wandell and David Semel, who also directed the pilot. Joe Hartwick, Jr. serves as producer. "No Ordinary Family" is from ABC Studios.

MTV’s Teen Wolf ordered to series
MTV has givien a series order to "Teen Wolf" [THR]:

Based on the 1985 Michael J. Fox film, the MTV series stars Tyler Posey (ABC Family’s "Lincoln Heights") as a high school student who gets superpowers, including the ability to woo girls, after a wolf attack.

"Teen Wolf" is created by Jeff Davis ("Criminal Minds") and Rene Echevarria ("Deep Space Nine", "The 4400") is one of the executive producers. Russell Mulcahy directed the pilot.

NEW SHOWS – TV BITES

• The role of Daenerys Targaryen in HBO’s "The Game of Thrones" has been recast. Tamzin Merchant, who left the project last month, has been replaced by actress Emilia Clarke. [Chicago Tribune]
• Summer Glau says that shooting the pilot of "The Cape" "was beautiful, amazing, really strong cast and I love the concept because I feel like it’s a really solid drama with elements of fun in it." [Zap2It]
• "LOST" director / executive producer Jack Bender has signed on to serve as director and executive producer on Syfy’s 90-minute pilot "Alphas". The pilot was written by Zak Penn and Michael Karnow. The show "centers on ordinary folks who develop extraordinary mental skills. The team members work to solve crimes while balancing their personalities and backgrounds."  [Variety]

GENRE TV NEWS – RETURNING/CONTINUING SHOWS

Eureka / Warehouse 13 crossover episodes – including Rene Auberjonois
Syfy has announced that two stars, one each from "Eureka" and "Warehouse 13", respectively, will team up this August for a set of crossover episodes:

In the episodes, which are currently filming, Douglas Fargo (Neil Grayston) of Eureka’s Global Dynamics is sent to Warehouse 13 to help update its aging computer system. This triggers a seemingly sentient computer virus that sends the Warehouse into lockdown and traps the team inside. The Warehouse 13 episode is entitled "13.1" and will air on Tuesday, August 3, at 9PM (ET/PT).

The Eureka episode entitled "Crossing Over," will air on Friday, August 6, at 9PM (ET/PT). Warehouse 13’s Claudia Donovan (Allison Scagliotti) pays a visit to Eureka, hoping to see some amazing technological wonders. She gets more than she bargained for when seemingly random objects begin appearing around town. Working with Sheriff Carter (Colin Ferguson) and Fargo, Claudia has to help solve the mystery before the strange anomalies have deadly consequences…particularly for newcomer Dr. Grant (James Callis).

Rene Auberjonois ("Deep Space Nine") will guest star in the "Warehouse 13" episode as a former Warehouse agent named Hugo Miller.

In other W13 news, Tia Carrere recently shot her first episode as one of Pete’s former flames and tells EW "It’s not a three’s-a-crowd situation — at least not yet…I am helpful to a case they are working on."

Doctor Who: details on the Live stage show + previews
BBC Worldwide have released new details about the upcoming "Doctor Who" stage show "Doctor Who Live":

 Developed in association with Doctor Who’s Executive Producer and show runner, Steven Moffat, Doctor Who Live promises the same excitement, adventure and suspense that viewers have come to expect from the TV programme and will feature specially filmed new video scenes. Opening in wartime London and concluding in an epic onstage battle, audiences should expect the unexpected as the The Doctor’s arch-enemies the Daleks are joined by some of the best-loved and most terrifying monsters from the TV series including the Cybermen, Weeping Angels, Judoon and Oods to name but a few.

With an out-of-this-world set, Doctor Who Live will feature special FX, optical illusions and spectacular pyrotechnics building to an epic finale. Specially edited video clips, drawn from the TV Programme will be shown on a massive screen and accompanied by the music of longtime Doctor Who composer Murray Gold. These iconic scores will be brought to life by a 16 piece orchestra live on stage.

Season 10 will be Smallville’s last + Supernatural moves to Friday
The CW has picked up both "Smallville" and "Supernatural" for 10th and 6th seasons, respectively. In the case of "Smallville", season 10 will be its last and Allison  Mack (Chloe) won’t be a regular [EW].

"It’s amazing to think that Chloe Sullivan and I have been one and the same for over a third of my life," says Mack in an exclusive statement. "I’m truly humbled by the love and loyalty of all the fans whose enthusiasm has carried me — along with a cast and crew that has become my second family — over the past nine and a half years. Out of respect for the amazingly loyal fans and the place I will always have in my own heart for Chloe, I’m coming back for several episodes next season to tie up Chloe’s Smallville legacy properly."

"It,s been a life-changing ride," Mack concludes, "and I look forward to what lies ahead with the strength of a ‘superhero’ as my foundation."

The CW press release also contains some details about the 10th season:

SMALLVILLE: Season ten promises the classic reuniting of the timeless romance between Clark and Lois, and brings Clark face-to-face with his destiny as he overcomes his final trials and forges the iconic identity that will be known for all time.

Tom Welling, meanwhile, told E! Online that even though the season is being billed as its last, theoretically it could be renewed for another season as long as ratings are strong:

"You never know," he told me with that million-dollar grin of his. "If you don’t know this already, as a fan you guys have all the power. The more people that watch, the more chance the show has to continue. We’re not here for a 10th season without the fans. That’s the truth."

Welling also revealed that he is working behind the scenes to get Michael Rosenbaum to return as Lex Luthor:

"I’m doing everything I can to get Michael Rosenbaum back," Tom told me, just before looking into the camera to make his plea. "Michael, please. You can’t have the show without Lex Luthor. And there’s no Lex Luthor to me except Michael. He’s the best."

"Smallville" stays put on Fridays at 8:00 p.m., but will be joined by "Supernatural" at 9:00 p.m., which is moving from Thursdays (and being replaced on that night by new drama "Nikita"). Here’s some information about the next season of "Supernatural" [The CW]:

SUPERNATURAL: Season six will be a season of mystery and shadow. Heaven and Hell have been left in complete disarray since the apocalyptic events of season five. And now, monsters, angels and demons roam across a lawless and chaotic landscape. And so Dean Winchester, who has retired from hunting and sworn never to return, finds himself being pulled back into his old life – pulled back by none other than Sam Winchester, who has escaped from Hell. The two reunite to beat back the rising tide of creatures and demon-spawn, but they quickly realize that neither are who they used to be, their relationship isn’t what it used to be, and that nothing is what it seems.

John Noble and Joshua Jackson talk Fringe season three
"Fringe" star John Noble (Walter Bishop) promises that the third season will have fans wondering who they should be rooting for [MTV]:

"The other thing about ‘Fringe,’ and we hope this will happen, is that while it’s very clear-cut now — everyone’s sort of rooting for the old team — I’m hoping that it won’t [remain] so clear-cut. In the long run, viewers may find themselves torn between both sets of characters. The people on the other side have a very good case to make here. And then you say, ‘Who do [we go for]?’ If we can do that, we’ve created a great drama."

Joshua Jackson (Peter Bishop) also promised that there will be greater development of the characters from the alt-universe:

"The other Olivia is sort of the polar opposite to the Olivia we have, or seemingly right now," the former "Dawson’s Creek" star explained. "And Walternate is a bit of a polar opposite to the Walter that we’ve known, but if we do it well, you’ll get to know those alternates better. And you’ll see that they are fully fleshed-out characters as well."

LOST series finale draws 13.6M viewers + Final round-up
The 2 1/2 hour "LOST" series finale drew 13.57 million viewers and a 5.8 A18-49 rating Sunday night from 9:00-11:30 p.m. It was the most-watched episode of "LOST" since February 2008 and the most-watched finale since May 2007. A special retrospective titled "LOST: The Final Journey" drew an average of 9.93 million viewers and a 4.1 A18-49 rating from 7:00-9:00 p.m. With this being the last episode ever of "LOST", here’s a special final round-up tying up a few loose ends (to go along with our Sunday feature which you can check out here) [SPOILERS]:

• The Man in Black actually had a name in the script, but for whatever reason the powers that be decided against using it. According to Kristin of E! Online, his name was…Samuel. [E! Online]
• Turns out the producers were definitely trying to get Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje (Mr. Eko) back on the show. Adewale was offered a guest spot, but the actor reportedly turned it down: "According to ABC and Lost insiders, Adewale was offered a hearty sum to do one scene in the last hurrah, but the actor wanted five times the amount that was offered. It didn’t work out." [E! Online]
• You can now pre-order the sixth season on DVD and Blu-ray on Amazon. You can also pre-order "Lost: The Complete Collection" on both DVD and Blu-ray. The sets will be released on August 24, 2010.

• It wasn’t a lie when Damon Lindelof revealed that we’d see Walt in the finale. Turns out we’ll just have to wait until the DVD/Blu-ray release. [Fancast]

• Here’s an explanation, from ABC, about the plane wreckage shown at the end of the episode: "The images shown during the end credits of the ‘Lost’ finale, which included shots of Oceanic 815 on a deserted beach, were not part of the final story but were a visual aid to allow the viewer to decompress before heading into the news." [LA Times]

And finally, are you still confused about the finale? Well here’s a quick explanation about the ending courtesy DarkUFO. (By the way, the entire cast didn’t die in the pilot when the plane crashed. That’s an inaccurate reading of the finale.):

In the final confrontation. Desmond was the only person who could go down into the light and unplug the cork. By unplugging the cork. The island lost all power. When the island lost all power ALL THE RULES COULD NOW BE BROKEN. Smokey/MIB lost all of his powers which made him mortal again but at the same time he could now kill the candidates directly. At the same time the island without its power was being destroyed…probably the whole world was being destroyed like “Mother” told her kids on what would happen if the light went out.

So MIB was now mortal and after a confrontation with Jack, he was finally killed. But the island needed to be re-plugged. Jack did this and sacrificed himself for the island. Hurley was left to be the new Jacob and Ben was his new “Richard” It appears that they had a successful long future not unseen but as Hurley told Ben in the ALT (which I am going to get into) “you were a good number 2” Ben: you were a good number 1” As for the people on the plane it appears that they escaped the island and probably lived happy lives back in the main land. The ones probably back in the island lived happy lives, like Rose Bernard, Cindy and the kids. As for Desmond he probably was able to get back to his family as well thanks to Hurley and Ben. Jack’s dying body was thrown out of the cave (like MIB’s body In Across the sea). He laid there dying looking up when Vincent came over and as he looked up and saw that the Ajira plane had been able to leave. He closed his eye and died.

Eventually like everyone does, they all died, from old age or however. (including Richard who started to finally age). Hurley probably died long after everyone else once he found his own candidate. When they finally died their “spirits” joined the others who had died before during the course of the series, they were in this type of “purgatory” which in season 6 was the ALT reality. Once in this purgatory, once they “woke up” or realized that they were in reality dead. They were able to “cross-over” probably to a type of heaven depending on your spiritual views. They lived happily ever after, in the great beyond.

As for any other unsolved mystery? How about Walt? Aaron? “Hurley bird“, the outrigger chase scene. Some answers may yet be solved in the extras during the DVD release. And a lot of answers are already answered. Aaron was never special, Walt’s story was over in season 5. All of the weird visions people (like Walt’s random apparitions) were probably just MIB’s turning into them, but that’s my other theory. ….

People might not like this purgatory ending but we have to realize that everything that happened season 1 – 6 on the island was VERY REAL. Everything happened. The only thing that was purgatory was the ALT reality, and I strongly believe this was a joke of sorts from the writers. People from all the way back in season 1 kept theorizing that it was Purgatory all along, well the writers played an ironic story on us, we wanted a purgatory storyline, they created it…..it was the flash sideways. Honestly this was the perfect ending cause we will be able to theorize for decades to come but more importantly our characters got closure and that’s what LOST was truly about it was about the characters finally finding redemption and in the end, even if it was in the ALT/purgatory world…they finally found it. …Except for poor Micheal who is stuck for all eternity on the island as a whisper, for the sins he committed. But at least for the most part all the characters got a happy ending :)

Heroes creator Tim Kring responds to NBC cancellation
"Heroes" creator Tim Kring has responded to the news of NBC’s cancellation of the series with a note which both thanks fans and gets in a little dig at NBC:

Regarding NBC’s decision not to renew the international hit Heroes for a fifth season, creator and executive producer, and award winning transmedia storyteller, Tim Kring commented: "I want to first extend my deepest gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to the legion of enthusiastic fans who have watched Heroes on TV, online, DVR, DVD and mobile over the last four seasons.

Every week more than 45 million TV viewers around the world, as well as millions of social and digital media-based fans, have made Heroes one of the five most-watched shows across traditional and digital media screens in the history of television.

For NBC, I certainly understand the challenge of creating a business model around a show which arrived precisely as the audience was finding new ways to watch traditional content on multiple screens.

Kring also noted that he and the network are busy "finalizing" plans to "keep the Heroes universe alive for its fans.":

I personally have had 12 great years with my friends at NBC, and with Heroes, they provided me a rare opportunity to put a message of hope, interconnectivity and global consciousness into the world. For that I am grateful and look forward to finalizing our discussion about a number of ways to keep the Heroes universe alive for its fans."

That plan will likely be in the form of a TV movie, according to NBC entertainment president Angela Bromstad:

"We are having a conversation about a two-hour event movie… to air at some point next year."

CBS cancels Ghost Whisperer, but ABC may pick it up
Although canceled by CBS, ABC is reportedly in talks to pick the show up. ABC Studios is the leading producer on the series, with CBS Studios a co-producer. Here’s the latest news courtesy Deadline:

More encouraging signs for a possible Ghost Whisperer afterlife on ABC. I hear all writer-producers on the show have deals in place for next season with ABC Studios, which is the leading producer on the series. (CBS Studios co-produces). I hear the writers have been asked not to take other jobs. Talks with the network continue.

Day One – Even more dead

"Day One", the apocalyptic drama from Jesse Alexander ("Heroes"), won’t air after all. After its episode order was cut from 13 episodes to 4 there was talk from NBC about airing it as a TV movie, but that’s no longer in the plans. [EW] If you don’t remember, here is the trailer that was released last year.

SCI-FI RATINGS (Based on final national numbers unless otherwise noted) [@TravisYanan]

We have two weeks of ratings data for "Stargate Universe" and "Merlin" this week (5/14/2010 & 5/21/2010). "Stargate Universe" drew 1.55 million viewers (+12%) and a 0.6 A18-49 rating (n/c) for "Pain" and 1.45 million viewers and a 0.5 A18-49 rating for "Subversion". "Merlin", meanwhile, drew a season-high 1.54 million viewers (+7%) and a 0.5 A18-49 rating (+25%) for "The Witchfinder" and 1.36 million viewers and a 0.4 A18-49 rating for "The Sins of the Father". Here are the current season averages for the two shows (where ratings are available) [@TravisYanan]

• "Stargate Universe" (17 episodes) – 1.73 million viewers / 0.7 A18-49 rating
• "Merlin" (8 episodes) – 1.31 million viewers / 0.4 A18-49 rating

After falling to a season low, "Legend of the Seeker" rebounded slightly to 2.21 million viewers (+13%). The show has averaged 2.35 million viewers through 20 original episodes this season (where ratings are available). [TV by the Numbers]

The final viewing figure for "The Vampires of Venice", episode 5×06 of "Doctor Who", was 7.68 million viewers (7.28M on BBC One and 0.40M on BBC HD).
