Guillermo del Toro won’t direct The Hobbit
Recently, it was confirmed that MGM’s financial troubles were at the root of the problem in getting "The Hobbit" off the ground. Now the lengthy process has resulted in Guillermo del Toro dropping out as director. Here are a few excerpts from his farewell message to fans [posted on TheOneRing.net]:
…Pete and co stuck to LOTR for years, I’ve developed films for years and I have shot many a movie on location… but rarely do you relocate for such massive amount of time specially when you have to do major ironclad agreements to put in deep freeze other contractual obligations with multiple studios.
My commitment to the project demanded enormous sacrifices both in personal and professional terms. The consequences of which will ripple for years. I relocated my entire life and family to New Zealand and first came on board in 2008.
So- while the cited delays, contractual complexities or obstacles, cannot be attributed to a single event or entity – you will simply have to believe that they were of sufficient complexity and severity to lead to the current situation. Trust me on this, Pasi- leaving NZ and the Hobbit crew is extremely painful.
…
I believe these films will happen. Preproduction continues as we speak. The writing team of PJ,FW,PB and myself will keep moving the screenplays forward.
…
I am not here, however, to provide a blow-by-blow of what happened, but to assure you, as I have, that it has been the toughest situation of my life.
Beyond that- I am simply no longer an official voice for these projects. Be good, be well- and I invite you all to follow me into the next phase of my filmmaking journey.
Sincerely
GDT
Del Toro will remain on board to help keep moving the screenplays forward. Despite the delays, the first part is still scheduled to hit theaters December 2012.
Green Lantern synopsis + first promotional art
Warner Brothers has released an official synopsis for the Martin Campbell-directed, Ryan Reynolds-starrer "Green Lantern":
In a universe as vast as it is mysterious, a small but powerful force has existed for centuries. Protectors of peace and justice, they are called the Green Lantern Corps. A brotherhood of warriors sworn to keep intergalactic order, each Green Lantern wears a ring that grants him superpowers. But when a new enemy called Parallax threatens to destroy the balance of power in the Universe, their fate and the fate of Earth lie in the hands of their newest recruit, the first human ever selected: Hal Jordan.
Hal is a gifted and cocky test pilot, but the Green Lanterns have little respect for humans, who have never harnessed the infinite powers of the ring before. But Hal is clearly the missing piece to the puzzle, and along with his determination and willpower, he has one thing no member of the Corps has ever had: humanity. With the encouragement of fellow pilot and childhood sweetheart Carol Ferris (Blake Lively), if Hal can quickly master his new powers and find the courage to overcome his fears, he may prove to be not only the key to defeating Parallax…he will become the greatest Green Lantern of all.

Also joining the film is Stanley Tucci, who will play the character Dr. Abraham Erskine. Lastly, check out an on-set interview with Hemsworth and his "Thor" co-star Natalie Portman embedded below.
Transformers 3 will be 3D + Probably Bay’s last
"Transformers 3" will be released in 3D. It’s unknown whether the film will be shot in 3D or converted in post, but given director Michael Bay’s recent objections to the tech, it’s more than likely Bay will shoot the film 2D and Paramount will convert it in post (hopefully giving themselves plenty of time to do it correctly). The news comes from a USA Today article where Bay claims the film will be the end of a trilogy (at least for him):
"As a trilogy, it really ends," he says. "It could be rebooted again, but I think it has a really killer ending."
Here are some plot details from the article:
- No more "dorky comedy", says Bay: ""One thing we’re getting rid of is what I call the dorky comedy," Bay adds. So the twins, the two bumbling, slang-spewing robots? "They’re basically gone," he says, though John Turturro returns for comic relief."
- Plot details are under wraps, but it delves into the space race between the U.S.S.R. and the USA, suggesting there was a hidden Transformers role in it all that remains one of the planet’s most dangerous secrets. "The movie is more of a mystery," Bay says. "It ties in what we know as history growing up as kids with what really happened."
In casting news, James Avery will play the voice of a new Transformer called Silverbolt.

Christopher Nolan: The Joker won’t return in Batman 3 + Also talks Superman
"Batman Begins" / "The Dark Knight" director Christopher Nolan has confirmed that The Joker will not be featured in the third installment [Empire Magazine via Obsessed With Film]:
“No”, says Nolan emphatically and unhesitatingly. He resists elaborating simply because, quite understandably, he says, “I just don’t feel comfortable talking about it”.
The third film will reportedly begin shooting next March. Nolan also spoke about the upcoming "Superman" reboot. The director, who is only expected to executive produce the project, says it came together after writer/producer David Goyer came up with a way to "address Superman in a modern context". Here’s an excerpt from the Empire interview [via CBM]:
“..What it is, while David Goyer and myself were putting together the story for another Batman film a few years ago, you know thrashing out where we might move on from the Dark Knight, we got stuck. We were just sitting there idly chatting and he said ”by the way, I think know how you approach Superman”.. and he told me his take on it. I thought it was really tremendous. It was the first time I’ve been able to conceive of how you’d address Superman in a modern context I thought it was a really exciting idea. What you have to remember about Batman and Superman is that what makes them the best superhero characters there are, the most beloved after all this time, is the essence of who they were when they were created, when they were first developed. You can’t move too far away from that.”

First look: Xerxes; Frank Miller’s 300 prequel
Frank Miller has begun work on his "300" prequel "Xerxes", which will be released as a six-part graphic novel beginning next year. Miller offered the following details about the project, which "300" director Zack Snyder says he would be interested in adapting to film "if the book is awesome and compelling" [LA Times]:
“The story will be the same heft as ‘300′ but it cover a much, much greater span of time — it’s 10 years, not three days,” Miller said. ”This is a more complex story. The story is so much larger. The Spartans in ‘300′ were being enclosed by the page as the world got smaller. This story has truly vast subjects. The Athenian naval fleet, for instance, is a massive artistic undertaking and it dwarfed by the Persian fleet, which is also shown in this story. The story has elements of espionage, too, and it’s a sweeping tale with gods and warriors.”
“The time frame begins 10 years before ‘300′ and the story starts with the Battle of Marathon, which was killer to draw, by the way, even if it was a lot of work,” Miller said. “The lead character is Themistocles, who became warlord of Greece and built their navy. The story is very different than ‘300′ in that it involves Xerxes search for godhood. The existence of gods are presupposed in this story and the idea is that he well on his way to godhood by the end of the story.”

Twilight: ‘Breaking Dawn’ will be two movies + ‘Eclipse’ previews
Summit Entertainment has confirmed what basically has been known for months: The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn will be adapted as two films. The first part is scheduled for release on November 18, 2011. The script is currently being written by Melissa Rosenberg and ‘Breaking Dawn’ will start production this fall.
Meanwhile, here’s what Robert Pattinson told MTV about an early cut he’s seen of the David Slade-directed ‘Eclipse’ (hitting theaters this June 30):
"I’ve seen a very early cut. "It’s good. It’s different. It’s really different."
"It’s like… serious," he continued. "All of the… fight scenes that are in ‘New Moon’, they’re like real fights now. Not fantasy things. It’s like a horror film."

Previously on TrekMovie.com: New Mortal Kombat Viral Video Features Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade
A nearly 8-minute short, titled "Mortal Kombat: Rebirth" hit the internet this week and has created quite the buzz. According to reports, the short — which features Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade (check out some tweets by her about the project here) — was put together by Kevin Tancharoen as a test video shot for Warner Brothers to get funding for an R-rated movie. Collider interviewed Tancharoen about it. Here are a few highlights:
- They shot the short film over two days on two RED cameras
- Started in early April and it took 2 months to do the post production. Most people donated their time. The short was made for $7,500
- No one at any studio knew he was doing the short
- Oren Uziel wrote the short. He’s currently listed on IMDb to write the next Mortal Kombat movie at Warner Bros.
- Says he wants to make a movie that balances the real world with the mysticism and the special powers. Compares it to the way Harry Potter exists in two worlds. As in there are two universes that coexist with each other.
- Confirms “fatalities” are definitely in his movie. He wants to put them in the tournament in an “organic way”
- Says Scorpion is the bad guy and will stay a bad guy
You can read the transcript or listen to the complete interview at Collider. You can also check out an interview with Matt Mullins, who plays Johnny Cage in the short, at CraveOnline.com.
Live-Action Voltron movie still alive + TV series in development
There was a report earlier in the week that the live-action "Voltron" movie had been scrapped in favor of an animated TV series titled "Voltron Force". That report was incorrect. Producers Richard Suckle and Ted Koplar confirmed to MTV that the live-action adaptation is still in development and an announcement is expected soon about the hire of a new screenwriter:
MTV News: So, right at the start, let’s clear up any confusion regarding the live-action "Voltron" movie. Where is it at, and what do you have planned?
Koplar: Well, Voltron is one of the great iconic brands from the ’80s, and a lot of people don’t know this but in its heyday it outperformed The Transformers. … We’ve had a lot of interest over the last couple of years in bringing back this franchise, and the movie has always been and still is the locomotive that’s driving our thinking. All this serves as a staging platform for the motion picture.
Suckle: As a matter of fact, we’ve been working over the last several months meeting with various screenwriters, and we’re actually on the cusp of securing an A-level screenwriter who’s going to write the "Voltron" movie. That’s all part of the plan here: reintroducing the brand to the fans who’ve watched over the last 25 years and to a new generation. We are very close to securing a screenwriter who’s going to actually write the feature version — so that’s always been part of the plan.
The two also talked about their approach to the movie:
Suckle: Those are all things we’ve talked about, but as much as it has a very strong robot element, this is a movie and a franchise that is driven by characters — these five people that in some or another are a representation of all of us. It’s really about how you have five different personalities working together in order to come together to form Voltron.
Koplar: The whole show is about teamwork — about a group of kids with various backgrounds who learn that the only way they’ll succeed is through the positive parts of each one’s background and bringing it together to make the robot work.
Although unofficial, both Suckle and Koplar hope to have the film ready for release summer 2013. For details on the new animated TV series, check out Variety.
Writers hired for The Flash and Green Lantern 2
"Green Lantern" may yet be a year away, but Warner Brothers is confident enough in the project that they’ve hired writers Greg Berlanti, Michael Green and Marc Guggenheim, to write a treatment for the second installment. Additionally, the three have been tapped by the studio to tackle a big-screen adaptation of "The Flash". It’s unclear at the moment which of the two projects the trio would take on first after "Green Lantern".
“Lantern” is shooting in New Orleans under the direction of Martin Campbell with Ryan Reynolds starring as the emerald ring-wielding DC Comics superhero who is part of an intergalactic police force known as the Green Lantern Corps.
Development on a second installment this far out from a movie’s release date is rare, signaling the studio’s confidence in what it sees so far.
It also appears to be the first moves the studio is making under its newly configured relationship with DC.
Iron Man won’t show up again until The Avengers
"Iron Man 2" director Jon Favreau revealed in an interview on the radio show "Kevin and Bean" (on LA’s KROQ) that we won’t be seeing Robert Downey Jr. in "Thor" or ‘Captain America’ and that instead we’ll have to wait until the 2012 release "The Avengers" — which he will serve on as one of the producers — to see the character on film again:
He’s not in ‘Thor’, he’s not in Cap which are the two movies for next Summer. It’ll be very interesting to see how the Marvel Universe branches off. All of these movies are going to be taken into account for ‘The Avengers’ in two years.
Later in the interview he offered some more thoughts on "The Avengers":
I’m not sure where The Avengers goes. There is no shooting draft written yet. It’s gonna be a big undertaking for Marvel to actually incorporate what happened in ‘Iron Man, Iron Man 2, Thor, Captain America, The Hulk. All that has to inform one unified vision in The Avengers. It’s a very exciting prospect. And certainly, Tony Stark is not going to be involved in any of the movies until that one.

Michael Fassbender to choose between playing Magneto in X-Men: First Class or the villain in Spider-Man?
Michael Fassbender (“Inglourious Basterds”) is being pursued to play characters in two competing Marvel Studios movies; 20th Century Fox’s "X-Men: First Class" and Sony’s "Spider Man" reboot, according to Showbiz 411:
At the same time, Fassbender is being pursued to play the villain in “Spider Man 4,” aka “No Toby Maguire Here.”

Cautiously optimistic for Capt America. Glad to hear Hawkeye will be in Avengers.
Whoo Neal McDonough!
Captain America is gonna be epic!
What a bummer that Del Toro won’t be directing “The Hobbit”! : (
I was wondering if they’d do a small Hawkeye miniseries on TV or something before the Avengers, but I guess he’s not a big enough character to headline.
I hated the smurfs but that actor has gargamel down pat.
Glad to see that mortal kombat has generated much interest.
I hope that the logans run film dosent get made. Love the orginal and hated the tv series.
Resident evil afterlife? HELL yes! I also think that resident evil could be a great syndicated series..But fans would have to wait for the season box sets to get the “unrated” versions of the episodes.
I really liked what Nolan did with Batman. But if he decides to make Superman just a really strong guy with a cape to make it seem “realistic” or “modern” I think I’ll be adding it to my list of movies not to go see. Right up there with the uncessary Spiderman reboot.
Nice to see a comic book superhero in black leather for a change.
As i say every time:
I want Spiderman to fail. It will be awful.
“Kim Kardashian to replace Angelina Jolie in the “Tomb Raider” franchise? That’s the rumor.”
Let’s just hope it STAYS a rumor!
Glad to see Christopher Nolan respecting Heath Ledger’s memory by not bringing back the Joker.
I wonder if there will be enough screen time for all the actors in “The Avengers”? I wonder how they will make the movie work.
As for “The Hobbit”, it’s too bad about the director quitting. Sounds like he might not be the only one. As for the film, it’s safe to assume that it won’t be out by the end of ’12. In fact, with the way things are going I wouldn’t be surprised that the film gets canned, or is made by someone else. And it doesn’t bode well for Daniel Craig as James Bond. He’s in a similar situation that Timothy Dalton was in 20 years ago. He ended up quitting because of the long delay.
Where’s the hard science fiction, or space opera in Hollywood movies anymore? That’s my preference, at least. Most of this stuff is pure fantasy or comic book adaptations. Well, there are a lot of amazing books I am looking forward to diving into. Looks like now is the time!
Sad news about The Hobbit, but I believe this film will still happen, and will still be amazing when it is released. It’s just too bad that there’s so much delay and complication to getting the movie underway. Godspeed GDT, I wish you the best
I hope Del Toro directs hellboy III.
I loved the first 2 films.
As for my opinion on the Hobbit, PJ should just step in and direct them.
Micheal Bay will be done after this Transformers? Does that mean we only have to suffer one last bad one and the the series will get… good?
I know the answer already – “money” – but can anyone please explain why they are letting more Twilight movies get made?
Wouldn’t be a moment too soon if Daniel Craig quit Bond. I don’t even like James Bond movies but the guy is not credible. Why anyone would cast the Mad Magazine Guy as James Bond is beyond me.
Really Debney on Predators and no Silvestri? :-(
#8 — why? What makes you so certain, sight unseen?
I am so looking forward to the Avengers. But what I would love to see. Is a Big and I mean Big time Movie adaption of The Justice League where we see all of them Superman and the Dark Night and Iron Man and Thor and all of the others in a Big Trilogy of Movies as they take on the badest of the bad. Now that would be super fantastic. But Im looking forward to Thor and Green Lanteren. So much coming up and going on.
@10
yeah I guess it should just be called “Plain-old-movies” Friday.
Is it just me or does Helmsworth as Thor look like Will Ferrell doing a parody?
I want my Thor and my Captain America looking like the Kirby classic version. Wish we could get closer to that.
– The script to “Men in Black III-D” is being rewritten by David Koepp.
Well, if you wanted to set my expectations about a Men in Black sequel even lower after MIB2, congratulations, you just did it.
Yeay! Only one more piece of trash Transformers movie for Michael Bay to stab me in the chest with!
Kim Kardashian Tomb Raider -LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLL
#23 – Yeah, isn’t it late for April Fools?
KK isn’t an actress, doesn’t have the fit shape for Lara, and just imagine the British Accent she’d try to pull off!
Wow. Is Hollywood really this hard up for stories for big-budget movies? Cookie-cutter superheroes, shallow videogames, sequels, and remakes? That’s the best they can do? Originality is dead and gone.
24. Yeah, really! When are we going to get something that is acually new?
After seeing District 9 recently, it has given me hope that orginality can still break through Hollywood’s nonsense barrier. Even though certain elements of D9 were lifted from Alien Nation, the overall story and execution, particularly the faux documentary style, were refreshingly audacious. Here’s hoping someday (or decade) in the future we’ll get another thought provoking sci-fi or space opera film.
(Hint, hint, Ridley Scott… put the bow and arrows away and go back to an original future story [Alien prequel notwithstanding].)
Is Inception a sequel to Dark City? At least in the previews it looks so similar.
so when we gonna get to see Battletech? o.O or LOLOLOL, Robo(t)wreck….
Is it just me or can no one view the Men in Black III-D movie in this article because it’s set to private?
@8: So you’d rather be self-satisfiedly disappointed than pleasantly surprised? You must be fun at parties.
Don’t know much about the comics, but I’m slowly starting to get excited for Green Lantern. Where did this Parallax guy come from, though? I thought the movie’s bad guy was called Sinestro.
Captain America art looks great, Stilll on the fence about Thor, though.
Thanks for the scoring clip! Watching composers do their thing is always fun. Fun fact — John Debney composed the score for precisely one TNG episode — The Pegasus.
No wings on Cap’s mask?
It looks incomplete.
Many moons ago, Stan Lee appeared on the old Mike Douglas afternoon talk show.
Mr. Lee and other guests that day donned Marvel super hero uniforms.
Stan-the-Man was none other than Captain America.
However in a wardrobe malfunction, the wings came off Cap’s mask.
Knowing that Cap’s uniform would be incomplete with out the wings, Stan Lee came out on stage wearing the uniform, but with the wingless mask resting on his shoulders and off his head. (I remember it like it was yesterday.)
If Stan Lee knew that Cap’s uniform would be incomplete without the wings, the modern day movie creators should be as wise.
Bring back the wings!
(It can be done in a modern, updated way.)
It looks incomplete without
So say us all.
You don’t need the wings…don’t be daft!
Captain America I fear is going to be some lame US patriotic-fest, whereas I am genuinely excited about Thor!! Loooooking forward to it!!
Captain America looks great (though still not happy they’re reusing Johnny Storm for that role). Thor on the other hand? Just meh…
If Hemsworth (whom I’m less than enthusiastic about) has really worked out as much as I think he has, they should leave his arms bare. Would make him look closer to what Thor looks like in the comics.
The way it is right now, he just doesn’t look as strong and menacing as he should.
Just my 2 cents’ worth.
@ 30 CarlG:
In the comics, “Parallax” IS Hal Jordan!
After the Alien called “Mongul” did land his spaceship directly on Hal Jordan`s hometown of Coast City – in which he killed Jordan`s girlfriend, Jordan tried to recreate the city and it`s inhabitants using the Powerring. But the Watchers, the small blue guys who are running the GL-Corps forbit Jordan to do that. So Jordan went crazy and killed almost the complete GL-Corps to get to the big battery and suck in all the Power of the GL-Corps possesed.
By doing so he turned into “Parallax”, the power of the Battery was now concentrated in his body.
But one of the Watchers survived and gave the last Green-Lantern Ring to a Comic-Artist called Kyle Rayner. He then became Jordans successor. Jordan/Parallax and Rayner/Green Lantern did battle sometime in the comics.
I think Parallax then turned into a good-guy and disappeared into space.
IF they`re intention was to make a good film, true to the comic, the villain should have been Sinistro, a former GL who had a golden “Energy-Ring”.
You see – the green Ring is powerless against everything yellow.
@31
I’m with you about Captain America. I want wings and I want the dreaded, big duffed, pirate boots too. But then, I was the guy who wanted the Punisher costume with his original white boots and gloves. I don’t care if it makes credible sense. These are superhero movies.
@35
I meant big “cuffed”…..and I still want them.
‘Big duffed?’ Cap’n America is a fat a**? I thought he was supposed to be in good shape.
; )
I don’t know why but I don’t like Thor’s suit. Something isn’t quite right about it. I know it doesn’t look like the comic version (didn’t expect it too completely). It looks at a glance, like some sort of armoured business suit with a vest and a cape instead of a coat.
I liked some of the ideas and visuals in the “Mortal Kombat” short, but making a full-length movie is still going to be tricky. There has yet to be a dignified video game adaptation. To this day I can’t believe they screwed up “Street Fighter” twice.
Wow, how did Megan Fox get such a wasp-ish waist?
Love it or hate it, Transformers is entertaining…especially to me and my son. I certainly didn’t go in to it expecting oscar-winning acting or plot. The writers and director are quite adept at putting together “popcorn” films that are not very deep. Big deal.
I’m excited because TF3 will be filming in my backyard–Kennedy Space Center, and around Titusville, FL, in September. Too bad I’m scheduled to go to Afghanistan then otherwise I would put on a uniform and try to be an extra.
I lost a good amount of interest in T3 when I found out Fox isnt going to be in it. :[
That part of John Debney’s “Predators” score sounds just like Silvestri’s music for the original film. Parts of it are even a 100% copy. Temp score galore!
The only good thing I see here is Scott Pilgrim vs The World, which looks incredibly funny.
@36
Stop looking over my shoulder!
#38: “It looks at a glance, like some sort of armoured business suit with a vest and a cape instead of a coat.”
I agree. It’s off. I don’t need it to resemble the comicbook costume (I think, translated literally, that costume would look awfully silly) but something Norse or Godly would be in order, I think, and that outfit is neither Norse nor Godly :/ Strange commuting-to-work-stopping-on-the-way-for-a-latte kind of thunder god.
#41: “Love it or hate it, Transformers is entertaining…”
Except, of course, to those of us who it fails to entertain. I watched the first 30 hours or so of the first film before shutting it off in boredom (and for the lack of a single likable character on the screen). At least it felt like 30 hours. Maybe it depends on a love of the franchise or something (I have none; I have only the dimmest memories of the cartoon).
Shame about the Hobbit. I think they should just hand it to Fran Walsh if PJ himself can’t helm it.
@34: Ah, cool! Thanks for the info. Obviously I was too lazy to google it ;)
Either way, maybe they’re keeping the Sinistro character in reserve for a possible sequel…
@32: To be fair, having Captain America without American patriotism would be like a Captain Britain movie that wasn’t pro-British, so speaking as a neutral Canadian, I say we let em have this one. ;)
@43: Debney might have been asked to include Silvestri’s original themes, or something. To be honest I like it; it bugs me when a new installment junks all the cool themes from earlier films.
I hate that he will no tbe directing the Hobbit..but geez…he’d be a very old man before they start filming the thing the way it’s been looking!… I hope Sir Ian doesn’t pull out as well…He is Gandalf! Have they even picked someone to play Bilbo yet?……
@34 – All true. HOWEVER… Parallax was later revealed to be the “yellow impurity” that was trapped in the “master” lantern on Oa. A creature that was the very embodiment of fear (and was yellow) had been trapped by the Guardians *IN* the Lantern and had been “forgotten”, hence the power rings having a weakness to all things yellow. Parallax took over Hal Jordan in a moment of weakness, and created the gestalt villain “Parallax”.
Since that time, the “Sinestro Corps” have been formed, and the Yellow Lanterns (led by Sinestro) have rings that are powered by fear. (There are also lanterns of various other colors now… all powered by various emotions.)
So, it looks like they are taking elements from various story lines. I’d prefer they stick to a straight origin story featuring Sinestro… but… could be interesting… I just hope they don’t introduce the ENTIRE Corps… like all the OTHER Earth-lanterns. (Stewart, Gardner, Rayner, etc.)
I was looking forward to Thor. The costume looks like a bad television series take on the subject. I’m bummed :(
