Happy Birthday, John Cho

John Cho is celebrating his birthday today. Star Trek’s new Hikaru Sulu is turning 38 years old (making him a whole nine days younger than his co-star Karl Urban). So today TrekMovie wishes John a happy bithday.

Baddass Sulu

John Cho brought a new dimension to his Hikaru Sulu (which he called "Baddass Sulu"), garnering him a big thumbs up from the original Sulu George Takei. Cho’s Sulu is a bit more serious, and he has taken the original Sulu’s taste for weapons to a whole new level. In this scene Kirk first learns just what kind of combat training Sulu has.

Back with Kumar for a Christmas Movie

John Cho spent much of the last year as a regular on the ABC time-travel series FlashForward, which was not picked up for a second season. But John is still busy. He is currently in pre-production on A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas, his third film starring (as Harold Lee) in the Harold & Kumar stoner comedy film series. The movie  will be released in 2011.

Taking Sulu "Internal" in sequel

In the Star Trek sequel, John is hoping to take the "external" action of his Sulu, and bring it "internal", as he says in this interview at last year’s DVD release party. John also endorses the Khan as villain idea (via Latino Review).

POLL: Sulu in Sequel

Should action-Sulu take his fight internal in the Star Trek sequel?

Happy Birthday Handsome!
As for that poll – both “Action Sulu” AND and internal struggle.

Can’t get enough of this awesome man.

Happy B-D!

Happy B-day, John! Looking forward to your further adventures in the sequel!

Don’t forget to check the parking brake!! :)

I want “Happy always smiling even in the face of certain death” Sulu from TOS. Even in bad situations, he always had a smile.

Oh and Happy B-Day Sulu!

Great things ahead, youngster!

Happy Birthday to John!!! I agree with his wanting to turn Sulu’s struggle internal…they should play a tribute to Takei’s orientation into this…Star Trek (TOS) wasnt just about exploration and optimism, it was also about the interpersonal relationships amongst the crew… perhaps they should do a tribute to the Cawley New Voyages episode Blood and Fire, but with Sulu instead of Peter Kirk in the controversial storyline…

Honestly I’d be down for more Sulu in the next movie, but I don’t think it has to be action or internal struggle. If it is action, though, maybe something having to do with piloting since he is the helmsman.

“Karl Urban is celebrating his birthday today. ”
I think a mistake accidentally happened. ;-)

Happy Birthday, John Cho!

I think the amount of time we have seen Sulu in the movie was ok. He shouldn’t get more or less screen time in the sequel in my opinion.

It usually takes some time to show an “internal struggle” convincingly and Sulu is only a minor character and it should stay this way. So I voted more action Sulu. Kirk, Spock and/or McCoy should be the ones with internal struggles. They are the main characters or in the case of McCoy should be.

And I really like badass Sulu! Not every character must have personal issues.

Happy birthday, John!

wow! 38. guy looks ten years younger than that, good for him.

I never would’ve thought John Cho could be the total badass that he turned out to be in Star Trek (I mean, come on, Harold?? WTF, casting agency?!)

Then came “fencing”. How gloriously wrong I was proven.

Bravo, Mr Cho, and Happy Birthday!

Internal struggle? Thats a loaded phrase. Does he have a thing for Checkov? Is he addicted to M&M’s? Did his Mom dress him up as a kabookie when he was young?

Happy Birthday Cho

Happy Birthday! :)

Wait a minute, 38? Well, he looks good (unlike me, who looks young because of acne).

Happy Birthday John!

Wow! John Cho is cool crap. May he get more lines and another fight scene in the sequel!

As i stated when he was cast, Cho is too old to play Sulu against Pine’s Kirk; this was visibly obvious in the movie, as Cho is getting some lines on his face now.

Kirk is aprox. 5-7 years older than Uhura & Sulu & a good 10 or more older than Chekov.

Cho seemed out of place amongst the others.

As for more Sulu airtime…why?

He’s a side character with next to nothing interesting about him other than his katana.

Keep him to the background where Sulu thrives best; I never believed in Captain Sulu.

I can understand how and actor would want a character to have an intrenal struggle but unfortunatly for Cho, Sulu isn’t one of the “big three”.
Save the internal struggles for Kirk, Spock and McCoy.

wow, honestly didn’t think he was 30.

Happy belated Birthday, Mr. Hot and Sexy!

Here’s hoping you’ll get your own television series with REAL writers. You deserve better than you’ve been getting.

As per Trek movie 2012 – More Sulu action and internal struggle!!! In a reboot, I don’t know why in the heck they can’t reboot the BIG THREE, too!!!

Go one with your bad self, AWESOMENESS!!!
