Star Trek’s Chris Pine is spending the summer on the stage in LA, but it looks like he is gearing up to get back to being a movie star as the next Jack Ryan. A new interview with the producer of the next Jack Ryan movie has revealed that Pine could be doing that role right before returning to the USS Enterprise.
Pine to take on Ryan before returning to Kirk
Last October it was announced that Paramount was bringing back the Jack Ryan franchise and had chosen Chris Pine to be the fourth actor to take on the role and the first since 2002’s The Sum of All Fears. Now in a new interview with Collider, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura provides a quick update on the project, confirming the title Moscow, and giving an update on the timing:
we’re hoping to get Jack Ryan off the ground with Chris Pine and that’s really exciting. …
We have a very good script. I think it’s…I’m very happy with where we are today and we’re looking forward to…maybe with a little luck starting next late winter/early spring.
So it looks like Pine could spend a few months dealing with international intrigue and espionage and then transition back to the final frontier, as the Star Trek sequel goes into production early next summer.
Following Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, Chris Pine is the fourth actor to take on the role of Jack Ryan
Pine has also been attached to the action comedy This Means War, to be directed by McG. Pine will be starring opposite Reese Witherspoon, and Vulture reports Pine’s rival for Witherspoon’s interest will be played by Sam Worthington. However, it is unclear whether this project (which has been in development hell for 12 years) will go into production after Pine finishes his stage work in August and before Moscow starts up in the Winter/early Spring.
Pine seen in Unstoppable next
Pine will for sure be next seen in the Tony Scott runaway train action movie Unstoppable, where he plains a train conductor starring opposite Denzel Washington. That film is currently in post-production and will be released November 12th. There has been no official images or trailers released for this film, but the fansite Chris-Pine.org has some photos taken from location shooting.
Chris Pine shooting "Unstoppable"
YES. I’m really excited to see Jack Ryan again. Hopefully they do it right.
What book will it be based off of?
@ 2
I hope they work on a completely original story. But theirs some good material out there. I don’t think they mentioned the book yet.
Hmmmm funny when i saw the picture of pine in the tox i was thinking of
James Bond………………..
Jeez, I’d completely forgotten about Aflac playing Ryan. Now I’ll have to start forgetting again…
Yeah!!!… Great news about CP!!! ….I can’t wait for all these CP’s projects!!!
Hope he’ll have enough time and energy for all these projects.
Maybe he’s catching Shatner’s workaholism. ; )
Awesome!
Hopefully the film will be “The Cardinal of the Kremlin”, arguably the best of the Jack Ryan books (yes, IMHO, a tad better than Hunt for Red October).
The Sum of All Fears aka the Star Trek V of the Jack Ryan Series…. We do not speak of it….
#5 I’m wishing i COULD forget about Afleck and SO is Paramount….

This could actually work, the kid seems adaptable and intelligent, with a sense of humor.

How brilliant for us to have Chris to! Well done to the Producers for seeing the potential in him.
I’m a little fuzzy on where Chris Pine’s Jack Ryan is in the series timeline. Is he pre-Affleck/Ryan or somewhere in between the other three. (Given his age, I think it’s safe to assume he’s not post Ford/Ryan.)
Or, is Pine/Ryan a Ryan Reboot?
Chris Pine should be the next Indiana Jones if they reboot it.
He is charming, funny and wacky and has that hero feel.
It’s an alternate timeline. The USSR is still in place. It will feature a time travelling Marco Rameus, played by Sean Connery. As well it looks like Shatner will be playing Ryan’s grandfather. I’m pretty sure it’s all true I heard it from a guy.
Well as long as they wash off the stench that was Ben Affleck, he was just awful as Jack Ryan.

Well he is learning from the best.
I could see Pine as Jack Ryan Jr. , but as for Jack Ryan Sr.? I just don’t know.
Here’s a blurb from
http://www.cinemablend.com/new/Moscow-Confirmed-As-The-Title-For-Chris-Pine-s-Jack-Ryan-Adventure-19487.html
“It’s been nearly year since Chris Pine was cast as the next incarnation of super-spy Jack Ryan, but last we heard the script was still in the planning stages, with tentative plans to pick up with Ryan after his stint in the Marines and send him on an adventure in Russia with the title Moscow….”
Sounds like a new adventure outside of the canon Ryaniverse.
“Moscow”? Haven’t the producers heard Russia is our ally now? We don’t have spies in each other’s countries anymore…
Oh, wait…
Man, we’ll have this and probably another transformers movie before trek comes out. There is something very wrong with this picture.
I don’t know. I know the Jack Ryan series based on my dad’s interest in the books, (and thus the movies), but he’s never been wildly impressed. Of course he’s one of those that does not like it when details get messed with. If the man is supposed to be married (like they say he is in the books), then don’t turn him into some young bed hoping guy who’s got a girlfriend. That’s the sort of thing I’m talking about. Anyway, I liked hunt for red october. We shall see if Pine can do right with Jack Ryan.
Reading “Following Alec Baldwin, Harrison Ford and Ben Affleck, Chris Pine is the fourth actor to take on the role of Jack Ryan” hurts!
Weird Al has it right:
“I sued Ben Affleck
Aw, do I even need a reason?”
So please change that to “Pine is the *third* actor to take on the role of Jack Ryan.” :)

great post. :-)
It sounds to me like Chris Pine is really positioning himself to be taken as a serious/ big-name actor. Between doing the stage and this barrage of upcoming films, his name is going to be all over the place. I say Good For Him. I think he’s got presence; he’s not just a piece of cardboard. And my girlfriend thinks he’s a cutey, for what it’s worth… I hope he has a great career.
Pine as Bond? I think not.
Now as Jack Ryan, I will buy that.
And I second the vote on Pine as a young Indy in a reboot.
I can’t believe I’m calling for the Indy reboot, but the last picture proved that the well is dry with Ford/Lucas/Speilberg running the show.
Come to think of it, I think a Star Wars reboot is in order. I’d like to see a real team of writers and a story-minded director remake the Prequels.
Hasn’t been a truly great Jack Ryan movie since Hunt for Red October. And I’ll never forget the Enterprise feel to the interior of the Red October.
Chris Pine actually intrigues me as a great choice to play Ryan. Much as I dislike Alec Baldwin, he was great in that role, and as much as I like Harrison Ford, he was just as improperly cast. Pine has a chance to make this franchise a big one if the story is good!
The Hunt for Red October is one of my favourite movies, but it wasn’t because of Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin). It was the Russian captain (Sean Connery) and his first officer (Sam Neill) who made that movie for me. They were fantastic. I had to ask who Jack Ryan was.
Hopefully, Chris will give Jack Ryan a real presence. It seems the story of this upcoming movie revolves around Jack and his new wife, which is good.
I thought that they were supposed to start filming the Star Trek sequel this fall/winter (from Oct 2010 onwards?…). Don’t say there is another hold up? Come on, Trek folks at Paramount, rattle those daggs. We are waiting. I NEED my Captain (James Pine/Kirk)…:)
I liked Red October, although it’s weak and disappointing compared with the novel. I loved Patriot Games, even though Harrison Ford was a bit too old to be playing the character. The next two were less interesting.
So, I’m looking forward to seeing Chris Pine giving the series a fresh start. The guy who did the impossible and managed to play the iconic James Kirk and be completely convincing certainly ought to be able to relaunch a character whose past portrayals have been inconsistent to say the least.
I’ll never forget the moment in ST09 where Kirk and Spock beam over to the Narada. I suddenly realised with a start that I was watching and completely invested in the characters . . . and it was of no concern that they weren’t played by Shatner and Nimoy!!
its good that Pine is taking another high profile lead role…kind of like Shatner in the 80s with Hooker.
itd be abit odd if come the Star Trek sequel Uhura, Chekov or Spock is the bigger movie star than Kirk! – itd be like Star Wars all over again (well Return of the Jedi anyway)…
as it is at the moment Uhura is like the biggest star of the 7!
kind of funny in light of Pines statements about playing Kirk more like Indy/Solo – now he literally taking over Fords role
maybe get Reese Witherspoon if Carol Marcus is in the sequel and Sam Worthington for the villain (rogue starship captain?)
14. Pine is a good actor, but I’d rather see Nathan Fillion as Indy. That man deserves his own movie series, and it looks like a Serenity sequel ain’t gonna happen.
I guess they took the sky from him…

Be careful when you mention the name “Reese Witherspoon” on this site. Harry Ballz is probably reading….
Chris Pine is continuing the connection between Star Trek and the Jack Ryan movies. Gates McFadden was in “The Hunt For Red October”, while James Cromwell was in “The Sum Of All Fears”. I might be forgetting a couple of others though.

other connections – Horner doing the score for the 2nd and 3rd film (certains parts just sound like TWOK and Aliens)
Trek VI was alot like Hunt for Red October in parts (the ‘cloaked’ ship, the battles) ….in space of course
and dont forget the SW connections – seeing Han Solo being best buddies with Vader was kind of odd (and Mace Windu – not that they knew it at the time…or anyone knew who SLJ was at the time either – man thats a long long time ago!)
its a shame Ford didnt somehow do Indys 4 and 5 instead of those movies…

Reese Witherspoon as Carol Marcus?
Well, sure, if you’re going to stick to canon that Kirk was into mountain climbing, you can always have him start with her chin!
Do we really want or need to see Carol Marcus though? I’d rather they told a good two-hour Star Trek film, rather than yet another pseudo-prequel. Kirk, Spock, McCoy, the Enterprise, strange new world, have an adventure. We simply don’t need any fanwank! Keep ot simple, keep it Star Trek.
I have become a Chris Pine fan. I was really concerned about him pulling off Kirk in Star Trek before it came out, but he really did. That movie worked mainly because of Pine.

I am in complete agreement!
I’ll pay to see Pine as Ryan….but more anxious to see him again as Kirk.
How about to see him as Ryan Kirk? You know, Jimmy’s third cousin! :>)
I just reviewed the Tom Clancy books with Jack Ryan and I figured a couple of things will have to happen in order for CP to play Jack Ryan:
1) New Storylines – In true “Jack Ryan” stories that haven’t been done in big screen fashion, only The Red Rabbit, Without Remorse and Executive Orders haven’t been done. I haven’t read The Red Rabbit, only the summary and I guess they could take some creative license to spice up the action. In ‘Without Remorse’ and ‘Executive Orders’, its an older, more veteran Jack Ryan so I’m not sure they’re looking to have CP play those roles.
2) Having read Executive Orders, the storyline of Executive Orders closely resembles the events of 9/11 and I’m not sure they would want to do that movie. Plus, most of the action revolves around the plane crash to start the novel.
3) A ‘reboot’ (good lord, that term is becoming way too common) could be in the works, but the movies themselves are not hat old so how do you do it effectively.
4) An original screenplay? – I guess they could come up with an original storyline involving the characters and could they have Clancy come up with a draft or treatment?
Just my thoughts. Will love to see what they come up with.
Come now, Reese Witherspoon’s chin is not that big or is it? LOL Actually, she looks like a cool, fun lady. And please, no Carol Marcus, not ever. This Pine/Kirk needs a nice woman, one who is not going to die, or do what that bitch Carol did.
I think they are doing an original story where they are taking it back to where Jack Ryan has just left the Marines and is working in Moscow when he stumbles on a plot against the US and his wife gets kidnapped…can’t remember any more than that. I guess we’ll have to wait until the film comes out.
Of the movies I want to see Chris Pine make – first STAR TREK, second ‘Moscow’, third ‘This Means War’ and anything else after that. This is one man who needs to be gainfully employed, because I NEED to see him on that big screen, playing different characters, because I know he can.
I can’t wait to see Unstoppable. The release date for US and Canada is 12 November 2010 but as yet, no date for NZ. If it is going to be later than 12 November, just hope it will be on my birthday, 17 December.
So mark your calendars now. Keep that date free for the Pine in Unstoppable!

If you paved Witherspoon’s chin, you could open a parking lot!
Her chin could be an icebreaker on the front of a ship in the Arctic!
Well, Chris Pine did say that he wanted to climb Mt Everest one day. There is no time like the present to start practising – climbing the Witherspoon chin. Filming This Means War starts on 13 September, so it could be all go from that date onwards.
And I say, lots and lots of pics!
Chris Pine for Indiana Jones – I third or fourth it. He has the charisma, and I kept seeing Indy in the Kirk he played.
That is all.
