So far IDW’s new ongoing “Star Trek” comic series set in the new movie universe have been doing new spins on stories based on original Star Trek series episodes. However, for issue #7 (coming March 2012) IDW will begin a brand new two-issue story dealing with the Vulcans and the aftermath of their planet’s destruction. The series that puts minor spins on the tv series episodes is really boring. The Vulcan series seems far more interesting.
I love getting the On Going comic book every month, and I’m counting on the stories to be increasingly interesting; as they break off further from the original stories and introduce new stories, as I think Bob Orci promised.
I can’t see Vulcans making a ‘logical’ argument for revenge; but maybe they’re more creative than heretofore thought. In any case, I think Vulcans are the most interesting of all Trek ‘aliens.’ They have depth lacking in Klingons, Romulans, Ferengi, Borg, Tribbles, etc…
Tribbles are the puffles of the alien world. Fortunately, puffles do not reproduce so quickly or perhaps tribbles become puffles once they enter earth’s atmosphere, ie become different colours, wear goofy facial expressions and funny hats. Still like lot of cuddles though…:)
Hopefully we’re beginning to see some of the backstory to the next film here, and this is where the next antagonist will emerge from. Or one of the characters they’re searching high and low for an actor to play right now…

While I agree broadly with this. (Controversially) I think Enterprise’s depiction was brave step, and often totally overlooked as being in keeping with how they were in “Amok Time”.
I still think there’s been no better exploration for the Romulans since “Balance of Terror”. Nero wasn’t it and they’ve been little more than cyphers in the films, and generic during TNG/DS9 with two exceptions… Tomalak & Vreenak.
They’re bound to go for “Again with the Klingons…” with the sequel, when Romulans have more cause to be there myself, especially with a nomadic Vulcan race about.
Finally; an original story!
I was beginning to think the whole IDW series was going to be remakes.
This one I might actually want to purchase.
Some Star Trek fans I’ve talked to think the aftermath of Vulcan’s destruction could merit an entire movie itself. I personally disagree. Although I do believe it deserves more than a casual mention in the next movie (it’s too bold an event to simply pretend it didn’t happen), I really think Star Trek is best when it moves forward, not backward.
But for a one-off comic book? It should be very interesting.
As for the argument above that Vulcans wouldn’t ‘logically’ seek revenge? I agree on paper, but one has to remember that tragedy of such magnitude (unprecedented in Vulcan history) could make all sorts of ’emotional’ actions suddenly seem ‘logical.’ They could ‘logically’ seek to destroy Romulus as a preemptive strike to ensure that this never happens again to the Vulcan colony or any other planet in the Federation.
Like how my comment regarding this comic in the “super hero” thread was removed. Must be because I talked about it before it was reported. Lame.

Hey everybody, this is my first post on Trekmovie, so please be gentle!
Love seeing the excitement above for the comic and for our first completely new story in the series. It’s going to be special.
As the series unfolds we will be getting increasingly far from how things played out in the original timeline. For example, issue 3 was the closest we will get to how a TOS adventure unfolded. In issue 4 (out 12/28) you’ll see how that story ends in a dramatically different manner from the episode in light of what we saw in the last movie.
HUGE thanks to everyone who has picked up the books! Hope you’ll stick around as we continue to countdown (sorry, I had to) to 2013.

@mikejohnson Huge thanks to you sir! I’ve been enjoying the comics immensely. While I wasn’t as thrilled with #3 (which mostly had to do with the discrepancy in artists), I was a big fan of the first two issues. I literally gasped out loud when Spock neck-pinched Gary Mitchell, and even teared up a little on the last page of #2. I’m totally on-board with reimagning the old stories when they are handled with as much affection as you’ve been giving them. I’ve always felt the 2009 movie was like a super-budgeted TV-pilot, and these comics feel like the new Star Trek TV-show that follows. Thanks for giving us something to look forward to in between movies!
@mikejohnson I’ve been collecting the on-going Trek since issue 1 right along with DC’s (the new52) Justice League and Wonder Woman, and have been looking forward to Trek every month just as much as the others. Cant wait to see where this goes, and thanks for even taking the time to comment here. It’s pretty cool to have you and the other new caretakers of Trek making an effort to connect with the actual fans.

I could see a really, really cool story line in the new time line with Sybok returning to lead groups of Vulcan refugees or become a new religious leader. That would put a neat spin on Trek V.

That could be very interesting; and a nice redemption for a potentially good character who was simply stuck in a bad movie (STV). The destruction of Vulcan would also provide him with a much-needed cause to rally the followers of his ‘movement.’
And presumably Sybok was ‘off-planet’ when Vulcan was destroyed (since he was exiled when Spock was a boy), there’s plenty of ‘wiggle room’ in the new ST ‘Abramsverse’ for this to occur…

I do like your thinking! The Romulans, too, indeed! So much unexplored depth. What do they/don’t they share with Vulcans in terms of biology, telepathy… How did the divergence begin, grow, etc…
I didn’t watch Enterprise or DS9, so I may have missed such exploration, but even so, I think future Trek needs to boldly go there.

I’d never picked up a comic book (other than the prequel to the ’09 movie) until On Going debuted. Now I make a beeline for the Trek shelf every month on the day the comic shop’s scheduled to get the next edition.
I find characters drawn as more emotive in the comics than they we’ve in the series or films. Of course you can’t say whether or not K & S will appear more likewise in the next movie, but should one expect such characterization in comics? (Anybody?)
Also like the Sybok idea. Wasn’t crazy about the original Sybok character, but I’d love to see him reinvented and to see more story around all those possibilities.
I think Trek can be new and more interesting than ever if writers take some time to explore and flesh-out areas (and unanswered questions) of the Trek universe we’ve loved but have really only glimpsed.
Why is Nero on the cover? I know he destroyed Vulcan but the only reason I can think to have him on it is if he had a part. Maybe he escaped the black hole and now he’s planning to take over Romulus.
Nero is symbolic, I expect. Nothing could’ve survived what happened. The Narada was torn apart from the inside out. Just as Vulcan was.
Why don’t they just show the Vulcans who want vengeance the clip of Nero saying “I do not speak for the Empire. We stand apart.”. Or just have one of the angry Vulcans mind melf Christopher Pike to witness Nero’s exposition in saying he’s from the future and that Romulas was destroyed. Lot of holes you can fill up with simple logic.
Actually, I take that back. I forgot we were dealing with Trek09’s Vulcans who are highly prejudiced and openly racist even on a high level. I guess it would make sense that their justification for killing Romulans is the simple, never failing concept of “guilt by association”, with the association part being just the race.
I had never had an issue with Sybok. Actually, I kinda enjoyed Trek V. It was a bad flick, but the story felt more like watching TOS then anything. I could see him coming back and trying to lead the Vulcans to Sha-ka-ri instead of the refugees of Nimbus 3. Spock would be a bit more interesting to write in that story. I could see Spock being more sympathetic and willing to side with Sybok then he was in Trek V. In Trek V he was firmly in the camp of Kirk, especially after all that Kirk risked for him and the level of his friendship with Kirk/McCoy. In the new movie, he has no relationship with Kirk/McCoy yet, and with all he lost and his half human side, he might be more tempted to side with Sybok in an attempt to rid himself of any grief he might have for this mothers death and his actions during the incident at Vulcan. Would make for a good novel or comic novel.
@ 26/27…I’d say the behavior of the Vulcans was rather consistant with what had been established, if you go by Enterprise. They were a nasty group of people in that show.
With the time travel portions, I’d assume that the Federation and Star Fleet would keep this classified to the highest level. Only high level individuals in Vulcan would know…also, I’d assume that Original Spock’s identity would be classified by Starfleet as well and he would go to great lengths to keep his story on the down low.
Interesting to see all the Sybok discussion… Let’s just say, the name has come up… :)

@22: I’ll be checking in when I can! Your support is very much appreciated by all of us working on the book. Fantastic to hear you’ve started reading more comics. It’s an amazing world to explore, with all kinds stories being told.
The new story could also lay some groundwork for reimagined Romulan stories such as the Balance of Terror. I think they have played this out extremely well so far, starting with stories that were easy to convert that they can slot into the current timeline easily and gradually as the butterfly effect ripples out over time, we could see some radical changes to the original plot ideas. A minor gripe is that two issues really isn’t enough to do justice to these stories. I understand that they want to build up momentum but they really need 3 issues a piece to do them well and all the stories so far have felt rushed. It’s a balancing issue overall I suppose.
My biggest complaint remains the total failure to modify the sexism of the original stories. While finally featuring Rand gets a big thumbs up from me, they need to triple the number of women and especially stop writing out the few female characters that existed in the original stories! I don’t recall a landing party that had more than a single woman in TOS and very often, much like Galileo 7 that woman was not even an officer. That kind of dynamic is recognised as highly sexist today. We can cope with female officers and with female redshirts taking one for the team.
Great to see that the comics will feature a new story for Star Trek. I wonder if it will be a sort of prequel to Star Trek 2013 ala “Countdown.”

The new stories have been in something of a rush. It’ll be nice to see a 4 story arc. I am sure they can’t dead with the menagerie due to Captain Pike’s uncertain state Amok Time might be interesting with Vulcan and probably T’Pring gone at the moment, but there are many other stories that can be told one-off.
